From one who's hand around the house, but pretty dumb when it comes to working on vehicles, this was just what I needed. Thanks man, this video and the serpentine belt video saved me at least a few hundred bucks last week and gave me more confidence with working on my own vehicles. Today, I'm also utilizing your brake pad tutorial as well. I couldn't find a video for the Toyota FJ alternator replacement, but this was very similar. I couldn't have done without your instruction, thanks again!
I just changed my 2004 Tacoma alternator. Almost the same process. I had to take off the bracket that holds the alternator from the top. Great video bro.
@2:17, where you remove the green plug with you spark plug wire puller, I found that it's easier to access it if you first remove the top bolt from the alternator, then loosen up the bottom bolt just enough so you can pivot it away from that upper mount, especially since I don't have a spark plug wire puller and your video was the first time I have heard of such an item, (I will put it on my "tool shopping list"). I was improvising with water pump pliers and couldn't get a bite on it any other way. Other than that, you video was quite helpful and you got a brand new subscriber.
Note: Just did my alternator on a 2010 sport Tacoma. Remove the entire battery from the truck first, otherwise you can't get the old alternator out. Also it has to come out from the top in that model. Video helped sooo much, Thanks!!
Thanks for this video Jordan. My girlfriends alternator went out today and we just installed a new one and a new serpentine belt which had almost 100,000 miles on it thanks to your videos. You saved us a couple hundred dollars at least!
One quick tip: If you live in a winter climate that rusts bolts and have a 4×4 take the alternator out from the top. The skid plate bolts will be rusted on and won't be easily removed. Add an extension to your ratchet handle and tie it off so it's out of the way but still keeping tension on the tensioner pulley, keeping your workspace open.
Exact layout for my 2005 Toyota Tacoma V6 manual 2WD. I had to access the belt tension via laying underneath the bed to loosen it as even with my most shallow socket I was having trouble getting to it without it pressing against the radiator fan. Hardest part was honestly getting off the grey cap on the alternator. Thanks for the video.
hey thanks man. my grandson is bringing his over for paw to show him n his dad how to do this. will show them the video .. awesome job man. great tip on the removal to the bottom.. yeah. ours is a 06 hopefully the pan is not in the way.. tks again.. simple trick.. idler one is good tip too . disconnecting the wires yeah.. i'd probably gorilla it an break it..lol tks
Tried taking off my bolts for my alternator and those thing are really on there (factory install im thinking).. gonna have another go at it tomorrow but anywho great video to use for reference! 👍🏽
I just finished the 07 6cyl Tacoma and the setup is not the same. First off the alternator is on the opposite side next to the battery. Also the belt tensioner is to the upper right of the crank shaft pulley, NOT on the left side of the engine. You might want to remove both the top engine cover and the bottom skid plate. I had to go from the top to access the top alternator bolt and could only see the bottom bolt from underneath. If you have big arms, you can forget about doing this. My arms are all banged up because of the tight cramped quarters. Took me about 1-1/2 hours because I had to find the belt tensioner since it's in a different area than this video shows.
nucka574 The water pump should be right in the middle above the crankshaft pulley. To the right of both about halfway down is the bolt for the tensioner. You need to pull it to the left I believe if I remember correctly. Recommend using a long breaker bar for leverage.
I am having trouble getting the alternator out...I have it completely unhooked. did you have to remove anything else to get it physically out? did you take it out from the top or bottom?
Awsome video dude! My new alternator comes in tomorrow and this video helps alot. Only thing is I have a 2010 Tacoma and the alternator is on the driver side. is everything mirrored on the newer models?
Glad I found this video. A friend was helping and pulled the wires out of the green thing. Now I don't know what colors to put back where. The holes are numbered 1 2 3 and 4 and the colors of the wires are Red, Blue, White and Gray. Do you know which color goes with which number?
thanks for the help, not very hard to replace alternator on v6, it was harder changing the belt....just take battery completely out, repair manual said you can go threw bottom to reach bolts better but that is false...video is better than manual.
Note: I just replaced the front brake pads and rotors on my 2008 Toyota FJ but the brakes are a little different from this Tacoma. However, found a video on that, but not a well done as yours. Anyway, thanks for the instruction.
Is it possible for me to change out just the brush without removing the alternator? I know you can do that on some cars but was not sure about on the Toyota. Thanks for posting these videos. It makes life a whole lot easier and a whole lot less expensive! :)
Ive seen the Tacomas when Im in the US, the closest thing we have to them in Australia is the Toyota Hilux 2X4s various series...the Tacoma has a prettier front panels/grille etc but very similiar lines otherwise. What prefix engine model type is that?
Fixbook... Great vid. Just replaced my battery in my 09 Tacoma and my alternator is pumping 13.4 volts into the battery. I'm kinda thinking this should be closer to 13.8- 14 volts. Is this a common problem with this model truck??? The truck has 118,000 miles on it.. I'm kinda thinking a new serp belt might be needed with this amount of miles?
It was the serp. belt. Just installed a new NAPA serp belt and my alternator output jumped to 14 volts. The older belt was just stretched out just a tad. Might just be cheap insurance to add a new serp belt to this job and or just get a new belt???
+Wil Oak No.. Adding a new belt jumped up the voltage and I had the alternator tested at AutoZone. I just check the output every oil change .... making sure I'm at or above 13.8 volts. No sweeking or humming has been noticed.
+Wil Oak I just noticed a low output and longer engine cranking during the winter. The belt had over 120,000 miles on it and was orig to the truck. The battery was also tested at AutoZone and the tech said it was on the way out. The battery was the the orig six year old battery. A new NAPA belt and battery and everything works to date. I guess it's a good idea to test both battery, alternator and belt condition... most auto parts stores will do this free of charge.
From some of the posts, I can see that Toyota moved things around from year to year. I just finished replacing the alternator in my 1999 Toyota Tacoma, my alternator was located on the drivers side of the engine, next to the battery. The battery had to be removed in order for me to access the belt tension screw using a 10mm socket, which was located underneath the alternator. Other than that, everything else was about the same as in the video, I'm ready to add another 125,000 miles to this great truck! I should have gone here (th-cam.com/video/4yOjN-lA1nA/w-d-xo.html) to watch a video of a guy replacing one in a 1999 version, the action starts at 5:45 but he forgets to show how to remove it.
What's up people! I'm into the 12 volt world a bit and was wondering about alternator room. Can someone tell me which one of this generation has room for the most alternators? I had a 2008 and traded it for a Caddy a while back, but I am interested in getting another one.
kg kb is great video it helped a lot but getting the new alt in wasn’t easy. I have a 2002 so it is slightly different. Easy to pull old out from top. Getting top bolt on was a bear
does anyone know a step by step or a video to a 2006 Tacoma the one is this video is accessible in the 2006 it is not - HELP??? 2006 V6 Toyota Tacoma TRD
V6 model is nearly impossible. Very tight quarters, more bolts and nuts to remove than V4, and I still can get my bottom mounts and bolt to mine up correctly.
It takes some work to get it free of the lower bracket, I used a long bar and a hammer the nudge it free. Once free, I was able to get it out over the top, but it's a bit tricky
Hi I just change the alternator AND AFTER I DID IT a have a massive amount of motor oil leaking all over the bell and dripping all over the bottom of the truck, PLEASE HELP ME What did I do wrong?.. Do you have any idea, what did I fuck off
thanks but your breathing is troublesome, sounds like you arent able to use oxygen which causes further oxidative stress when you breath deep, you think youre getting more air but you cant use it, therefore you cant use water! seriously, eat less or no dead foods and never use a microwave, drink ph balanced water, no sodas, and take prodovite, most revolutionary supplement today, perfect blood in 5 minutes, which allows you to use oxygen properly.. peace

Thank you, I gotta do a 01 later should be same as 04 👍

Yo! Just want you to know that I appreciate you! I followed every damn thing you said and did! Now my 2008 taco works great,

Thanks brother I had to take mine off to fix a timing cover leak your video showed me how to.
Saved me paying a shop 1600.
Your videos have been great for a old man to fix his 2010 Tacoma. Thank you.
Great video! Actually one of the most informative I've seen! Thank you!
This is great for teaching me to fix my 2004 Tacoma and I’m fifteen ! (Drivers permit currently)
actually I have one eye. soooo... seriously though great video. subscribed
Very informative, truck is working great again thanks!
thank you! this is exactly what I'm looking for.

Excellent video. Thanks. Just did mine and you saved so much time and bs. Great job!
I'm in Maui Hawaii, your video was very helpful. I am about to do my alternater. Thanks a lot for your post!
Tyr
Good luck.....it's a very misleading video
your video really helped thanks man!
Excellent video!!! Agree it's one of the most informative out there. Thank you sooo much.
Very informative and the banter alone is a winner. Subscribing now 👍
Not a bad video. You explain everything nice and it helped me out I always fight the alternator cause I went up threw the top.
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO MAN. VERY FAST AND EASY TO FIX!!! THANKS AGAIN 🙌🏽🙌🏽👍🏽
Very simple. Super descriptive. No b.s.
Thank you

I am trying to remove my alternator on my 07 Tacoma and I am having the same issue, do you remember where the bolt is to loosen the belt?
nucka574 The water pump should be right in the middle above the crankshaft pulley. To the right of both about halfway down is the bolt for the tensioner. You need to pull it to the left I believe if I remember correctly. Recommend using a long breaker bar for leverage.
Jimmy Pham Thanks!
I am having trouble getting the alternator out...I have it completely unhooked. did you have to remove anything else to get it physically out? did you take it out from the top or bottom?
+Jimmy Pham - My 06 is like yours. I wondered about it when I saw this video. Did yours come out from the top or the bottom?
Awsome video dude! My new alternator comes in tomorrow and this video helps alot. Only thing is I have a 2010 Tacoma and the alternator is on the driver side. is everything mirrored on the newer models?

Thanks for sharing the knowledge and helping me save some money. Mahalo from Hawaii.
This actually helped with my fj cruiser alternator replacement solid

This is great, your post was very helpful removing and replacing the aalternator
Can you please give us the link where you got your spark plug pullers?
Note: I just replaced the front brake pads and rotors on my 2008 Toyota FJ but the brakes are a little different from this Tacoma. However, found a video on that, but not a well done as yours. Anyway, thanks for the instruction.

useful video...thanks. good info for my 94 hilux which needed a alternator replacement. tks
Thnx bro really 👍🏼 so helpful
Thanks for this video very helpful I repaired my Tacoma 👍🏼thanks again
agreed, much easier to reach when the battery comes all the way out. found this out when i decided to remove & recharge the battery (dumb luck!).
Thanks, a big help, and money saver.
Great video!

What prefix engine model type is that?
can you please show, how to replace the stater also, on this 2005 tacoma
Does this apply to the 07-09 FJ Cruiser? I think they use the same alt, but my alt is on the driver side of the vehicle i think.
just so everyone will know, the vid is for base model 2.7L tacomas
Thanks for the great video, it was very well done.
Nice video. But you're killin' me calling pulleys "sprockets".
Thanks J-Dawg!!!
Thank you soooo much my friend !!!
I went to the Toyota dealership and they helped me by searching through manuals. They said White is #1, Red is #2, Blue is #3 and Gray is #4

+Stephen Maurer. ok gotcha. Before the belt replacement was it testing as excessive ripple or something similar?
+Wil Oak I just noticed a low output and longer engine cranking during the winter. The belt had over 120,000 miles on it and was orig to the truck. What engine is this? Certainly not the 4.0Liter. This 2007 Tacoma I'm about to work on has the alternator location on the other side of the engine.
great video man. ur a big help!

thank you for helpful
How many miles did the Tacoma had at the time of replacement?
10 out of 10.
Good work thank you
Great Video. Thank you.

You look AWESOME in that pic, jk no you don't.
Thanks bud! Didn't ask, but you're not much help.
Thank you
The radiator hose is in the way through the top
nice camera job
kg kb is great video it helped a lot but getting the new alt in wasn’t easy. I have a 2002 so it is slightly different. Easy to pull old out from top. Getting top bolt on was a bear

V6 model is nearly impossible. Very tight quarters, more bolts and nuts to remove than V4, and I still can get my bottom mounts and bolt to mine up correctly.
Jordan: This does not cover the V-6 engine. Do you have plans to put up a video for the V-6 4.0 engine? Thanks
i removed both bolts and my alter. still dont come out!
It takes some work to get it free of the lower bracket, I used a long bar and a hammer the nudge it free. Once free, I was able to get it out over the top, but it's a bit tricky
cool a lot easier than I though it would be
Did you original Toyota alternator. I used a after market and the engine is shaking and I hear squeaking on the pulleys. Thanks
Also the edges of the bell got rip off, but whats blowing my mind is the motor oil, Why is laking all over
thanks a lot!
Why did you put the same alternator back in? It was the same one!!
To show you how to install the fucking alternator
To change the oil in the alternator
You're a jackass. It's an instructional video
And a very misleading one at that!!!!
This doesn't work for a 2008 prerunner v-6
this isn't for the 4.0L
You should buy a 6 cylinder! This four has the alternator on the wrong side!
The 2.7L engine was built for left handed mechanics
05 Taco 4.0ltr not like that
Replacement on a 4.0 tacoma, way harder than this crappy little 4 cylinder hahaha.
Hi I just change the alternator AND AFTER I DID IT a have a massive amount of motor oil leaking all over the bell and dripping all over the bottom of the truck, PLEASE HELP ME What did I do wrong?.. Do you have any idea, what did I fuck off
Thats not a 4.0
You never even added the link to show how to replace the belt!? WTF!
thanks but your breathing is troublesome, sounds like you arent able to use oxygen which causes further oxidative stress when you breath deep, you think youre getting more air but you cant use it, therefore you cant use water! seriously, eat less or no dead foods and never use a microwave, drink ph balanced water, no sodas, and take prodovite, most revolutionary supplement today, perfect blood in 5 minutes, which allows you to use oxygen properly.. peace
