Madeline: I just beat the physical manifestation of my anxiety and depression, I almost died while trying to reach my life goal and I finally made my way on Celeste Mountain's summit, there is surely a lesson to be learned here. Don't run away from your problems, face the- RT: *I missed 2 strawberries*
I find it very funny imagining RT's Madeline canonically dying in 10 seconds, crushed by a falling ice block, before even setting foot into the mountain.
"Oh, and you really should get your driveway fixed. The ridge collapsed and I died" "Well if my 'driveway' did you in, the mountain might be a bit much for you!"
Funny story, one of my friends was like this, we hadn't spoken in years. One day they just, reached out, and we settled our differences, kind of, and I feel much lighter ever since. I guess it's a gamble, but I feel like it's worth a shot.
One of my favorite things about this game is that the characters' reactions to Madeline's strawberry pie at the end is based on how many strawberries you collected. The more you got, the better the pie turns out (and the more elaborate the pie looks, too!) If you don't get a lot, they're just like "good effort, this... isn't bad!" It's even possible to do a run where you get *no* strawberries at all, and everyone's reaction is just "Madeline, this is just an empty pie crust."
"People are like holy shit he's not terrible" That was my reaction to you getting the first strawberry in less than 5 minutes. Seeing people play this game for the first time really lowered my overall expectations.
I've finished this game with all B-Sides 3 times and with all C-Sides one time, thats my current save, and I got 200 deaths first try 2A and 100 deaths first try 1A, and for 2B, I got like, 500 deaths, he got 89

Well if “climbing the mountain” is a metaphor for overcoming anxiety and depression, then “those who perished on the climb” are the ones who couldn’t overcome it.

@@Thatonefuckinguy In that case, find yourself an idiot who'll take time off of their day to listen to you. Worked wonders for my depression and anxiety and existential crisis.
@Zsombor Szekeres Sorry if you misunderstood. I call myself one, as this world has become one that forces people to think of themselves first. Therefore, not conforming to the norm must be stupid and people who don't are looked down upon by society in general. I don't belittle people for trying to help, it's just that people who actually go out of their way are few in number nowadays and are usually made fun of for their actions. I actually am glad that these 'idiots' exist. It's my term for endearment. Or maybe I shouldn't call people like them that way since I could be misunderstood... Yeah, I'm pretty much dumb overall. I'd work on my nicknames...
I gave myself a stupid name for my playthrough and when Theo addressed Badeline for the first time, calling her "an adorable goth Ted Cruz" I was hit with seven different kinds of psychological damage all at once.
@@TheGIJew. You do get to name your character though. Even on a first playthrough, there is a rename option literally right below the "Begin" on a new file. Should probably say someone called BS on this, and that you can’t change Madeline's name.
It's really cool watching RT's chaotic energy take a bit of a backseat in order to properly enjoy the story. You can tell pretty early on how he starts to realize it's something he might want to take seriously, and it makes the ending really special imo. Don't get me wrong, I love RT's chaotic energy, but seeing him read the room and appreciate something like this is really cool
It made it special for me, Celeste is one of the few games I've ever gone into completely blind and is also one of my favorite games and to see him sit back and enjoy the games story was amazing
It's so refreshing because most of the people who have "chaotic energy" never take any story of any game seriously. It becomes frustrating when they try to play a more serious game. RT showed with this game that he knows how to manage himself and in this day and age? That's just plain impressive!
My favourite thing about the scene at the end is it changes depending on how many strawberries you get. The pie is nicer if you have more and, if you're me, with fewer strawberries it looks crap.
I tried the level 2 b side exactly once and got over 200 deaths because for whatever reason the computer wouldn’t respond when I tried to do the Double jump.
I love that Celeste is a game that uses it's difficulty as a way to further it's message. It's not gloating down your face with it's brutal difficulty. It's quiet, yet overwhelming. It tells you that what might seem impossible now, can be done. You just need a bit of time, effort, and practice, and you can overcome it. And if you can't do it, it's okay Assist Mode is there for a reason. Assist Mode servers as a reminder in this game that if it all gets too difficult for you, it's okay to ask for help. You aren't weaker for doing so. It's all so beautiful, and we need more games like this.
Well said. And I like the parallel between the difficulty of Madeline climbing the physical and metaphorical mountain and you the player clearing the platforming which feels like a mountain itself.
@@billcipher826 yes. I can't remember if it was in the game or somewhere else but in her/their room there is a transgender flag and a lesbian flag. (I assume a MTF {male to female} trans due to everyone referring to her/they as she and the lesbain flag)
In a chapter 9 in-game picture, yeah. The developer later confirmed it, though iirc it was something that kinda happened midway through development as the developer went through their own transition
"Alright. As your therapist, I'm gonna do everything in my power to help you and ensure that you can live a happy li-" "Can you give me me an extra jump?" "What?" "If I absorb you will I get an extra jump?" "I don't think so..." "Then we're done here." *Hair turns blue and leaps out of window*
So the morale of the story that Im getting out of this is one big metaphor. Sometimes you have struggles in your life that are huge, and you have to get over them to succeed. Sometimes you're battling yourself and battling mental illness - anxiety, depression, etc. The people you meet along the way are sometimes unexpected, and they can help you in the way you least expected. Overcoming these obstacles in your life isn't about curing your illnesses, or pretending that you're perfect but rather accepting it and using it to your advantage. The more obvious message is that strawberry pie is fucking delicious.
@@zap3231 Well, Madeline *is* officially trans. It's not explicitly told in the game which I think is a good thing. (I'm trans myself) She hated getting taken pictures of herself, had depression and anxiety and had some past stuff that kept bothering her. Not to mention, Badeline literally came out from a mirror and represents parts of herself that she hated. Though, in the end she was able to find acceptance in herself. I know all of these metaphors aren't exactly trans exclusive but they can definitely be an allegory for trans peeps when put together.
“The magical place of, Seattle” Honestly seeing the rest of the game with _Hotel Lad_ and evil Madeline I wouldn’t be surprised if Seattle is actually magical
This actually made me cry, no joke. Its such good symbolism for what many people have to learn when healing from trauma or dealing with mental illness. I had learned the exact lesson a while ago; that "bad side" of you is just wayward guardians that don't realize they're hurting more than helping. They may have helped at one point, but they aren't sustainable, so you have to learn, not to push them away, but to adapt them for who you want to be. Its such a sweet game. I wish this wasn't the first time I'm seeing it.
As somebody who deals with both depression _and_ panic attacks, _Celeste_ really struck me for how genuine the dialogue was. Madeline's description of what depression feels like was one of the most accurate summaries I've seen in any medium, and while I don't see the same things when I have panic attacks, the imagery in the game has a similar feeling to it.
When I played it I had to stop every so often because the dialogue felt so genuine and familiar. This is one of my favourite pieces of art ever. I still use the imagery of a feather when I need to, and I even have a feather on my wall that I found on a hike up a mountain, which I went on after playing this game :)
I’m so glad RT played an enjoyed this game. Celeste’s story had a much stronger impact on me than I could have ever imagined going into it. Just seeing the memorial at 4:46 makes me tear up after playing and understanding the game.
This game means so much to me on insanely personal levels and it's also a game I find incredibly fun because it's generally enjoyable. but it's also a game full of p a i n. and Seeing RT genuinely ace this game so incredibly well, left me shocked, for days. Dude did such an insanely good job and is genuinely skilled and basically anyone who has played Celeste can see that and is equally impressed as me :D
Agreed. This game has helped me with depression quite a lot. I was floored when he finished the game with about 100 less deaths and an hour faster than me because I thought I did really well in my first playthrough. He did get less strawbs though. Haha.
Once you've done a bunch of challenge levels and stuff, I recommend just starting a new file and seeing how long it takes you to get through to the end when you're more experienced and stuff. I had hundreds of deaths on my first playthrough, I think that file has something like nine thousand deaths on it total from all the B-sides and whatnot, but now I'm able to reach the Summit and beat the Core in about 3-4 hours total. It's really satisfying.
Yeah, RT played really well. I can agree with you on that- 100%. Took me way longer than him to beat the game, and I barely got even half of the strawberries he got.
@@Nat_the_Chicken I know how you feel. My third playthrough I was able to 100% (all strawberries, B-Sides, C-Sides, and Farewell) in literally a few hours. Once you really got a feel for the game, the levels aren't actually that take that long, but still feel just as satisfying to conquer.
1:01:30 “this won’t take long!” Says Madeline before she covered multiple times the distance that took her days to do prior without anything to keep necessities like food and water in check
I’m honestly shocked that he got twice as many strawberries as me, with less deaths. I wanna say it’s because I used keyboard instead of a controller, but I’m not sure
Right...its my favourite game but without even going for the strawberries i had at least a 150 deaths on each level....over all i had way over 1000 deaths...and i sidnt even go for the strawberries
@@mambodog5322 I mean not really those two games take a very different approach to the mountain climbing thing like getting over it is literally a game about pain, suffering and grinning and bearing it until you eventually struggle your way to the finish line while a short hike is exactly that a short hike it’s just supposed to be a pleasant, relaxing venture
Re-watching this now having started theropy and going through depression has made me realize how realistic this game's narrative around Madeline's relationship with Badeline is
Lena Raine did such a good job on the soundtrack of this game. I remember that she put a lot of herself into this soundtrack apparently as she connects alot with Madeline's anxiety, but take that with a bit of salt as I could remember it wrong. Personally love Resurrections the most.
I was introduced to Celeste via the soundtrack, and damn it's so good. I'm so glad I decided to check it out, I had a great time and learned some cool stuff about mental health. Lost and Scattered and Resurrections are my personal favorites.
@@DanTDMs-homunculus God, so much of the soundtrack is amazing. I found out Celeste by the soundtrack as well, and it's probably Ressurections or Awake that takes it for me

Little known fact, in the last part of the temple where you have Theo, if you reverse the music, you can hear Madeline saying some pretty depressing things about herself
It's stuff about how she doesn't know who she is anymore, how she see's someone else in the mirror and how she's scared of where her thoughts may lead, ending with how she doesn't like scaring herself.
@@BlackieSootfur just finished beating all the levels in the game, including c sides and chapter 9, and oh boy did I almost enable assist mode so many times
@@TheAugizzz I have a friend who I think would love it except he told me he hates skill-based platformers. I'm hoping to stream the whole game for him at some point just so he can experience it. So there are always gonna be people for whom it's just not their thing, and that's OK, but it doesn't stop us from aggressively telling them all about it.
When I started watching this, I was thinking "he's kinda bad." By the time he got through the hotel, I was thinking "holy shit he's basically better than me how'd he get so good so fast." I love this game.
A lot of Celeste's more advanced movement tech is surprisingly intuitive - I've seen several youtubers figure out one or two tricks playing normally. I think I figured out one of the hyperdash variations during the main campaign.
With most games when you first play them you always think you're a lot better than you really are. Celeste has the opposite effect: you always think you're doing worse than you actually are. Really adds to the games overall messages.
Can I just say that RT is doing one of the best players for their first playthroughs? He is doing way better than most people on their first try through the game. (Also #Blessed for Theo.)
I cried a few times while watching this. They really got it down that you're not supposed to fight against your self. Even or rather especially the parts that you want gone aren't your enemies. They're there for a reason. Let them help. And listen. It's stuff that I still need to learn. But this symbolism really helps remind me I think. I'm gonna have to remember this video for the future.
I know this video is nearing almost a year from it's publish date, but thank you Daniel for showing this game to me. After a long time I found some time to play it and it was the most beautiful experience I got out of a game. Even knowing the game's storyline I got the feeling Celeste really brought out the "Badeline" of me, how to overcome anxiety and accept the part that I hated. I'm ready to move on with my life and chase what I feel is important to me the most. . _After I collect all those strawberries. That might take a while._
i absolutely love when RT plays a sentimental game, and talks about his feels, it's just something we need every once in a while, and I enjoy it very much, keeping a positive mind can be hard work and talking about it or hearing someone talk about it helps a lot, relating is nice thank you rt 💕💖
I think this game simulates dealing with mental illnesses extremely well. As someone with anxiety and someone who overcame depression, I think I can speak comfortably about what it's like. Honestly, the mountain allegory is perfect. It's extremely challenging, and one mistake has the potential to set you back to the beginning, but once you've reached the top it's an amazing feeling. I'm gonna talk about how it represents Madeline's "journey" though because it's obviously more suited for the game. At the start she decides she needs to overcome her anxiety/depression (represented by Badeline, more on her later), and starts climbing Celeste. First she meets the old lady who, if she has a name I completely forgot it. Anyway, I can't figure out how the old lady fits into the allegory, so if anyone knows please let me know and I'll update this comment (and credit you and your channel, as thanks). She next meets Theo. Theo is important to her recovery, and I'll talk about why later on when I get to the temple. Skipping past Badeline again because I'll talk about her at the end, we get to the final piece of the puzzle, Mr Oshiro, who I think represents society. Madeline tries to help Mr Oshiro (and by extension, everyone she meets) because she thinks it'll help her climb the mountain, or overcome her mental illnesses. But those mental illnesses, once again represented by Badeline, ultimately push him away. She takes the gondola, which I think symbolises her talking to someone for help, but that ends up sending her into a panic attack when it seems to stop going anywhere (notice how Badeline shows up, and how later Madeline mentions she thinks Badeline is why the gondola stops) So, Theo teaches her a breathing trick to help her keep going. Badeline goes away, and she gets to the temple. Now, let's talk about Theo. I already said how Theo helped Madeline progress, and it certainly rings true here. Theo says that the eyes and the crystal represent his mental illnesses, namely his fears of not being enough for society, and feeling trapped as a result. So, Madeline sets aside time to help Theo with his problems, not realising that doing so is helping herself. But then, she tries to get rid of her anxieties, thinking that's all she has to do, but when it fails it sends her right back to the bottom. The old lady tells her that she should try to understand her anxieties, not ignore them. And so, she speaks to Badeline, internalising her mental illnesses and learning to cope with them, rather than push through them (hence why up until this point, Badeline was an antagonist, but now she works with Madeline) Madeline realises that Badeline is a part of her, and she shouldn't try to just get rid of her, but instead learn to work with her, which ends up being what she needed to finally reach the peak of Celeste, and overcome her mental health. It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking "I just need to get rid of this, and everything will be fine" but you can't get rid of it, at least not without learning how to cope properly. Helping others, like Mr Oshiro and Theo, is what allows Madeline to help herself in the end. Celeste is one of my favourite games, and despite that I hope it doesn't get a sequel, or if it does I hope it stars someone new with new mechanics and symbolism, because putting Madeline through this again would undermine the core message of the game. Overcoming mental illnesses, or any illnesses for that matter, is never going to be easy. But you can do it, it takes a lot of work, and you'll trip up here and there, but in the end, it'll be worth it. Celeste came out around the time I finally overcame my depression, and a lot of the game's messages line up with my personal journey. Celeste (the mountain, not the game) is "designed" to help people. Those climbing it have their darkest fears made real. It forces those climbing it to battle their illnesses in a more literal sense. Most people don't climb the mountain to the top. They give up, they stop climbing. A few have even started living there, like Mr Oshiro. And this is accurate to the sad reality that most people don't overcome their inner demons. They give up, or take root in them. They let their own mental illnesses take over. But with a little outside help, they can climb their mountain, and reach the top.
I couldn't see why everyone went ape shit over this game but seeing it like this instead of hearing everyone say " I love it because it's like meat boy" ( no I don't remember the actual title of the game because it's irrelevant), seeing the story about overcoming mental illness and learning to live with it, it's really sweet
The game you're referring to is Super Meat Boy, once of the first indie platformers that has massively influenced 2D platforms ever since it's release, so I wouldn't exactly call it "irrelevant". Celeste really hits the mark when it comes to being a platformer, while also managing to have a great story and fantastic soundtrack. People immediately praised it because it's delightful in every way and is the best controlling platformer since SMB, while also managing to be extremely accessible to all skill levels. Try not to assume anything about a game you haven't played until you've played it yourself, if people are going ape shit over a new title it's likely for a good reason. A lot of people like to assume games that are very popular must be bad/overrated for some reason, which makes no sense to me. The amount of people I've heard trash talk games (to name a few: Undertale, Hollow Knight, Doki Doki Literature, even mainstream titles like Among Us, Fall Guys, and Fortnite) without EVER having played the game just baffles me.
@@Killerabbet let's be clear, I don't assume anything about it, and it's very clear you like it a lot, cool. I call it irrelevant because when talking about celeste's story it is irrelevant. And I really don't care about the game, for all I know it could be a game I might enjoy a lot but to be honest I'm not concerned in the least about it, got many more things that are much more important. So try not to assume anything about a comment you don't understand lol
As someone who also struggles with depression, this game really hits the nail on the head when it comes to trying to describe what it feels like. Obviously everyone's experiences are different, but I think it does a good job putting the feeling across 10/10 game
Definitely, and in this case, it also talks about transgender people, as it also describes the difficulty of gender dysphoria, and the resulting anxiety, depression and difficulty of accepting reality, and how to deal with your the resulting problems and limitations that are a fundamental part of you :) This game is great!
33:50 - That wasn't a glitch in SMB3, it was an intended mechanic! There's even a secret room past the finish of the level that leads to one of the game's warp whistles, which is only accessible by going in to the background like that.
RT is uncomfortably good at celeste. I had like 700 something deaths on my first run of celestial resort, he had only lslighttly more than that in the *entire game*
I think it's a good to remind yourself that this is literally his job, plus he said he likes platformers so he's played stuff like this before. I think just playing games for 30 hours a week gets you tuned in to what the game wants you to do. It took me 15 hours to beat the main story and I died like 3000 times :)
Like he seems like haha funny Irish man, but to be successful streamer you have to be at least decent right? Nobody wants to watch someone spend 30 minutes on one level at a time, that's boring

The real strawberry pie was the depression we overcame along the way.
Got us in the first half, not gonna lie

@@DanMerry36 what do you mean a trans allegory? Either I'm not getting that term right or you're implying the game has an allegory for trans people...

She hated getting taken pictures of herself, had depression and anxiety and had some past stuff that kept bothering her. Not to mention, Badeline literally came out from a mirror and represents parts of herself that she hated. Though, in the end she was able to find acceptance in herself.

All you had to do was put "super"

Theo being trapped in the crystal represents how theo feels trapped as a person with all those eyes on him.
I can't be the only one that enjoys the mellow stuff like this and the short hike game he played a while back
As someone who also struggles with depression, this game really hits the nail on the head when it comes to trying to describe what it feels like.
Well, we saw the Rhythm side of RT. Only makes sense this is what the Platformer side looks like.
33:50 - That wasn't a glitch in SMB3, it was an intended mechanic! There's even a secret room past the finish of the level that leads to one of the game's warp whistles, which is only accessible by going in to the background like that.
"826 Deaths that's a lot"
I want him to do Chapter 9 so bad
He has done it
he did he got to the heart gate i think
RT is uncomfortably good at celeste. I had like 700 something deaths on my first run of celestial resort, he had only lslighttly more than that in the *entire game*
Mate the wind level gave me a good 600 deaths, and he made it out with ridiculously less
I cannot believe RT of all people accomplished what I spent months trying to do while getting almost twice as many strawberries in the process.
Did he get twice as many or you
I think it's a good to remind yourself that this is literally his job, plus he said he likes platformers so he's played stuff like this before. I think just playing games for 30 hours a week gets you tuned in to what the game wants you to do. It took me 15 hours to beat the main story and I died like 3000 times :)
Like he seems like haha funny Irish man, but to be successful streamer you have to be at least decent right? Nobody wants to watch someone spend 30 minutes on one level at a time, that's boring
i never understood the hype around celeste until i saw a playthrough like holy shit forget striking a chord this struck 826
"I'm happy with that." Is one of my favorite RT quotes. RT, you make me smile and I love it when you play calmer games like this. It assures me that, no matter what, I can make it. And to whoever is reading this, you can to. Don't let your "Bad-aline" stop you! Work together, like Madeline did. :)
Edit: Also, #Blessed for Theo.
I've never watched someone try so hard to convince me he's never played the game he's currently kicking ass at.
No, but seriously, you kicked this game's ass, way to go!
_886 deaths tho_
@@HardGuess have you played this before? That's CONSIDERABLY low for a first timer
@@HardGuess Yeah, most times is 1000-1500 for the first playthrough
@@HardGuess lol that's the deaths i made on only like 2 chapters
Daniel you missed 2 strawberries tho-
As one steam review said: "I never hated strawberries so much in my life."
PLEASE, go further in this game! It's a wonderful experience, do chapter 8, try the b-sides, collect crystal hearts (chapter 9 but we don't have to talk about that one), you're so good at this game, and there's so much more to do.
Ah yes, another lovely edition to the “hike being a metaphor for anxiety” genre
A hike being a metaphor Anxiety is very apt let's be honest
It's wonderful to see so many of my favorite content creators start playing Celeste. Even though it's been more than three years, this game is still attracting new fans, and that's nice to see.
It was a great Stream though i wished chat could have eased off on the spoilers. Love the way Celeste teaches you mechanics without slamming them into your face and rewards clever usage of them. If you enjoy it you may also like a game called Hollowknight. Not sure if it would be optimal for your type of content but you may enjoy it in private if you havent heard of it already. Also hope you are recovering well. Stay Safe RT!
It will be interesting to see if he can get past the first room of Deepnest, given his extreme arachnophobia.
@@gavindao6754 He'd get to the first weaver that climbs in and start having a panic attack. Do you remember how bad he was with subnautica?
well, his pinned self-comment says that is exactly the plan for the next game. The question is just what type of player he will become... Theorist? Explorer? Warrior?
@@gavindao6754Cut him some slack! I know he has arachnophobia but i believe he can do it. Though of course i wouldn´t want him to suffer through that if it really makes him too uncomfortable
@@gabrielkrone237 I mean, he was able to handle the Wolf Spiders from Grounded okay. He might make it through Deepnest, though he'll probably try to avoid it as much as possible.
826 is honestly a very impressive death number for the first playthrough, hope to see you do the b/c sides and maybe farewell!
He did do most of the B-sides on stream, it's available on the RTGame archive channel
