    John Ford is amazing, and also a known grump. Got to study him for a semester in film school. The lower horizon line sets the subjects against the sky, elevating them among the heavens.

      @@Michaelengelmann Perhaps. Or perhaps now. But then, nobody was using or speaking about cinematic composition in this way, to this degree in Hollywood. Most cinema was shot indoors, on stages. And it doesn't scratch the surface of the contributions John Ford innovated, or helped innovate. This is the guy who launched the careers of John Wayne, then Henry Fonda, then Jimmy Stewart, as symbolic representations of the evolution of American Man. Over 80 years ago. Before film noir. Before the technological evolution WW2 brought to the industry.
      And speaking of WW2, this guy commanded the film arm of the US Army during the war. Not propaganda films. He personally filmed the battle of Iwo Jima, and directed the film troops that landed in Italy. These guys ran into battle, not with guns, but with cameras. They would be shot, keel over, and the man behind him would pick the camera up and keep charging. He was insane. A grumpy insane maverick film maker.

      Alright.
      First thing I would recommend, if you want to take my advice at all, is to look at the legacy of the greats.
      For instance, look up John Ford. Then look up Steven Spielberg. See how many of John Ford's film are referenced, imitated, or alluded to by other filmmakers (picture makers, like Spielberg). You may find some of your favorites or some new recommendations among those lists.
      Then, when you look up Steven, see how many of his are not only referenced, imitated, or alluded to, but also how much money they made. That, at least, should give you an idea of how much their advice is worth.
      To think outside the box, you have to know what's in it first...

Without a great story it doesn’t matter how well placed your cameras are or who beautiful your lighting is. Artists imitate other artists all the time, a great and unique artist is someone who stretches the boundaries and gives you something that hasn’t ever been thought of before. I look up to certain Directors and Writers and Actors but I don’t ever try to mimic them because in my head I assume, why would someone want to watch a film that’s similar to Spielbergs when they can just go and pop in a Spielberg film, make them want to watch YOUR art for YOUR style.

      First, good observation. I know exactly what you mean. But we don't need people like this anymore. For most of the last 100 years, it was incredibly expensive to produce movies. Film, cameras, and the cartel that is the movie theater. Nowadays, we don't need any of that, you can produce whatever you want with the phone you're watching this on. It's not the exact same quality, but you can still find an audience. Great directors like Spielberg and Ford are obsolete relics.

      Great advice if you're making a western or a war movie! Or combining both elements like in Indiana Jones. There is no horizon in space, so that logic is useless. Hence Star Wars and basically any space movie centers the camera on the planet or spaceship (s). Your view is either wide to show the entire ship, or the purposely exaggerated LONNNNG spaceship in Mel Brook's Spaceballs! Yes, it was a gag, but if he showed the entire length of the ship in 1 shot, it would lose the sense of being immense! I guess you have to start somewhere! Spielberg has amassed a great number of movies throughout his career. Cant really think of a " stinker" at the moment.

    • @STEVEN-STEELE
      @STEVEN-STEELE ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gvgv3515 Yes!! I saw Star wars when it first hit theaters. That shot of the ships surface as it moved along it. I remember thinking it was huge. Now a days I picture the same shot and someone bumping the model and it bouncing around on its strings. You hear Ugg Cut!!! 1st it's the fans blowing it around and now it's the lens hitting it. This after seeing the models of the ships. You know that's now a lost art at least as far as film err digital recording lol. Those model makers really did some amazing things. When I was a kid I remember lighting a model with small flashlight bulbs. Then seeing Fiber Optics come along. The City scape they used just for the then new HBOs feature presentation was so big yet the scale of the cars was pinky nail size. CGI has change so much.

    • @gvgv3515
      @gvgv3515 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@STEVEN-STEELE Totally agree. Listen, if you REALLY want to laugh, AND see how far things have evolved, watch an early 1950s movie where they actually glued 2 paper plates together to form a saucer, painted it silver, and had guide wires to hang the saucer on. They tilted the guide wire so gravity would make it slide. They set one end on fire and filmed it; all to represent a spaceship crash landing on earth. You could see every wire and wobble as they pulled the
      " saucer" along. Of course it bounced on the wire! LOL. I cant remember the title for certain, but it might be It came from Mars. Of course its all in black and white, which makes the fakeness even more apparent!
      Onto Star Wars circa 1977. Lucas got his big break with the very first movie. His special effects were the state of the art in 1977. Computers didn't exist for Hollywood purposes back then. It was ALL done by hand! Let's start with outer space. He created the look with black muslin tarp with millions of tiny holes randomly poked through the tarp. Behind the tarp he shined a bright studio light onto the backside of the tarp. From the front, you see what looks like pin points of light. Suspend that big ass starship model in front of the tarp and VOILA!!! Outer space with the empire's main vessel !!! The tie fighters and x wings were all done the same way with LOTS of newly invented guides, cranes, and dollys to move the fighters smoothly. Yes many cuts/ retakes were needed so you DIDNT catch the occasional bump/ wobble or bounce. The actors were filmed in cockpit replicas for the closeups. The wide angle shots of the full size ship required at least 2 full life size ships to be built to film the action shots of Luke and R2D2 actually flying in space!! No digital/ CGI existed in 1977! Everything was done manually. Moving the life size ship through
      " space ", meant dragging the ship AND MOVING the tarp to coincide with climbs and descents! Rotating the film camera physically, while filming, gave the illusion of each ship doing a barrel roll spin. It worked great for the closeup shots especially! There's way too much to discuss about special effects here. I will leave with 1 trivia tidbit. Do you know how R2D2 got his hame??
      There were hundreds of film reels in the creation of the final edit of the movie! They used a dialog audio track and film track. Here is the birth of the name.
      The name derives from when Lucas was making one of his earlier films, American Graffiti. The movie that inspired the tv show Happy Days!! Sound editor Walter Murch states that he is responsible for the utterance which sparked the name for the droid. Murch asked for Reel 2, Dialog Track 2, in the abbreviated form "R-2-D-2". George Lucas, who was in the room; dozed off while working on the script for Star Wars. He momentarily woke when he heard the request and, after asking for clarification, stated that it was a "great name" before going back to writing his script for Star Wars!! You're welcome!!🙂

      @STEVEN-STEELE ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gvgv3515 That's an awesome Out of left field story of how R2D2 got named. I like American Graffiti for numerous reasons.
      You know you spoke of Spielberg not having a stinker. I wonder if out there somewhere is a Short Film in Super 8 made by an adolescent Spielberg or Lucas for that matter.
      My Dad got me into the whole Sci-fi genre and their Burnt Casserole monsters that were ill fitting and had suspiciously looking human eyes. Lol but it's part of a much missed part of my life now. I get a Fix now and then with Mystery Science Theater 3000. . As a child Star Trek was still in syndication. So that and M.A.S.H. were his thing. The Saturday night Horror or Sci-fi movies were something I often got to watch with him I loved almost as much as Saturday morning cartoons. Ehh Kids just don't have a clue today. A hour or so after school with Gilligan's Island Then Space Giants. Then Sat Mornings were it. After that it was imagination used outside. Untill Happy Days The 6 million dollar man. Or If titled these days "Budget Man"😆 Then my favorite MORK AND MINDY. I even had the Suspenders.Yes I was the Odd Kid in school. Anyhow this has been fun. A friend and I often talked about making a low budget movie just for fun. He wanted Horror I wanted Comedy. But it only made it to the talk. Get this for an opening scene.
      You see a eye then nose while you hear dialogue you catch an ear. Then it stops. You hear someone say Hold it Cut Cut it fades to black and Text appears. This motion picture has now been formatted to fit your screen and starts over. A sorta Homage to Monty Python. I know corny but just something Iv always wanted to see. I once wrote a skit and wanted to get it on SNL. But you have to be part of a writers guild and all. Heck I'm an Electrician in Alabama lol. Iv enjoyed this Gv Gv

    The problem with this short, and half of the f***ing shorts on youtube, is that it cuts out key pieces of the scene and makes it nonsensical. In the the actual scene (which I had to look for after this made no sense) he asks young Spielberg to tell him what he see's in the picture, then asks him about the horizon which is low down in the first picture. Then he asks him to say what he see's on a second picture (this is cut out of the short) in the second picture the horizon is higher. The whole story won't really make sense anyway unless you already know of this "horizon method" which I didn't until scrolling through comments.
    I have never heard of John Ford until today, and he seems like a complete bell end to me. Someone asks for advice, and you give them some cryptic answer that doesn't explain anything. Great thanks for that. That's unless Spielberg is retelling the story differently to make it more dramatic?

      I know that it doesn't make much sense but Jack was an interchangeable nickname for John back in the day. Whenever you watch documentaries about John F. Kennedy you will hear several people refer to him as Jack instead of John for the same reason.

    So, again it's some random person "just" walks into there and has someone say "you want to be the best film director?"
    Another words instead of hiring someone with the talent, they place someone in the position then glorify them.

For example, black Americans dominate the NBA as their culture focuses on it, but the NBA isnt only played by black Americans.
