    I just got my first hinderer, a gen 6. Wow. It’s wicked sharp, I mean scary sharp, and that action is unbelievable. I don’t know what previous hinderers were like, but with the bearings in, it’s unbelievable. Every flipper should be this snappy. I have to say, this is a very good, quality knife with great craftsmanship.

    Here’s a new question! I saw that in your literature, e.g. the “note from the ranch,” that comes with the copper horse head scales, it states that “brass and copper scales are softer than titanium” and “for proper installation place included steel washer in the scale pocket for use of bearings or washers.” That makes perfect sense, however, the problem is that bearings and washers are different thicknesses. With the steel washers in place, the bronze or teflon washers fit, but the bearings are too thick. The only way the bearings fit is with the washers removed. I hope the copper doesn’t wear too badly from the bearings, because the bearings fit only with the washers removed… My XM-18 is now assembled with the copper scale, with bearings and without steel washers. It centers perfectly, without blade play, and is perfectly drop-shutty, i.e. it works perfectly. What am I missing?

    Would be awesome if the bearings had a very thin hardened steel washer behind to to prevent trails in the titanium. Another good thing would be if the detend is attached to the lock inlay instead of having it still at the titanium frame.

    Just got the xm-18 3.5 gen 6 spearpoint. I immediately switched to PB washers, lubed the detente, washers and pivot.
    The knife came in scary sharp! The only issue I have is the flipping action. My fingers are super sore at the moment 😆 is there like a break in phase? Or anything that I can to achieve the smooth flipping action that everyone seems to rave about?

  • @codyflood6995

    What's up with all the Mitch matched hardware on the XM-18? That's almost a deal breaker for me. I'm going to need 4 different bits to take apart one knife.

  • @ReclusiveMountainMan
    @ReclusiveMountainMan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    People are concerned about the hardened steel bearings grinding into the titanium frame of their new Tri-Way knives.
    It's my thinking that there is little pressure on the bearings and once they create a track in the titanium frame, the wear will cease. This is due to the pivot, closed-blade stop pin, and standoff doing their job (holding the knife parallel). I don't think there is any way the bearing could eat their way through the titanium frame.
    Can you confirm this hypothesis on my part? Or perhaps make a video on the physics of the Tri-way folder?

  • @korwl540
    @korwl540 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    on the scale side, what's the reasoning for having the spacer contacting the blade with the washer between the liner and spacer? wouldn't it make more sense to have the blade contacting the washers?

    Hey Rick, love the knives! Just got a hardly used green sheepsfoot XM-18 3.5" skinny, taking apart for first time to swap on orange g10 scale I bought, and I noticed the previous owner had the bearings in with no oil. I wanted to try the PB and nylon too for the hell of it...but my question is, is it ok to use them without KPL oil I usually use on all my other knives? I noticed you didn't apply in video, and previous owner didn't. Is it really a moot point, or do you think running them dry like it is now is better?

    • @Mr1121628
      @Mr1121628 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Now I'm no Rick Hinderer, so I can't speak for his preferences directly, but I have owned hundreds of nice knives, and I would definitely apply some form of lubrication regardless of what system you're using. I guess technically the teflon is self-lubricating, so its not 100% necessary, but ive always found it improves the quickness of the flipping action. Same with the bearings- Ive heard people make a good case for why bearings dont need or shouldn't have lube applied, and if you work in super dusty dirty environments I might agree (if you do, just use the washers), but I use some form of lube on every bearing knife I own and it definitely dramatically improves the action. I usually use Hoppes No. 9 gun oil on all my knives, but ive used Nano oil and Daiwa Reel Oil too and they're good. Some people like KPL, but im not sure about the people who make the stuff so I choose not to buy it. You can also use rem oil pro as well as tuf glide if you want a dryer lube for less dirt attraction. For free-floating bearings like older IKBS and Ceramic IKBS, I usually use some sort of fluorinated grease/lithium grease. Oh, and always remember to lube the detent ball with a more liquid lubricant, not grease. Its always worked better, and usually if I have a dragging action, that's the source of the issue. Cheers!

    Can't seem to make this work. I have a "skinny" skinner from USA made blade. The bearings are fine, but when I switch to the bronze washers the blade is off center. Well, I can center it, but then the pivot is so tight it won't open. When I switch back to the bearings, all is well.

It's one of the few knives that puts a smile on my face everytime I open, close, or use it. If you have the funds and happen to see one in stock give it a shot. Videos and photos don't do it justice, you have to handle one to get it. So nice!👍

    My opinion is this. I have older versions and newer and i like the variety BUT not all in one knife. I run the bearings with the milled out newer blade because it's milled out and i don't mind the bearings, no way i'm puting those spacers in there just to run the bronze washers which if i had to choose i prefer over the bearings. I like the bearing model but what stinks is now you can't have a bronze washer model without the milled out blade for no reason. I'd rather give you more of my money and buy two knives or choose to buy one over the other then have the spacer in. I bet if you make a spacer version and one exactly the same without spacers both on bronze washers the bronze washer version without the milling for bearings will feel better. Also the spacer is more gaps and places for dirt or whatever to get inside and is just less pleasing to own unless your running bearings. Obviously for us loons willing to buy these expensive knives we are also looney enough to be bothered by stuff like this. To maintain sanity with these newer models i just run the bearings and i do like them but i mis the simple set up without the milled out blade for the bearings. Peace

    Forgive my ignorance but isn’t this old news? Lots of company’s use these type of washers is it that this model allows you to choose which type you want?

      Lmao you know this is the guy who makes these knives, right? You think he’d buy a fake of his own knife? He said in the video that it’s a demo model. The blade hasn’t even been sharpened.

      @@sigiligus you may be right, however, there are a lot of fake Hinderers out there, and one sure sign is the horse missing. Stay safe out there
