Hi SwitchUp Family - a pleasure to have something like this to review so early in 2024. I have to be honest I really didn't think this would turn out as it has, but here we are! Let's find out! Mark
Thanks for the review all this makes me want to buy it and thanks for all the reviews in the past on other games you help me make my decisions on buying game on the switch I have so many game now I can't keep up 😂
I’m hoping this game does well enough that we see more games with this much depth, style, polish, and clear passion. Lost Crown takes the best of Hollow Knight, Metroid Dread, and Ori; offers deep combat and platforming, and will easily keep players glued to the screen. No doubt, I’ll wind up playing the demo another 4 times.
I congratulate the devs/studio on this game cause it was their first attempt and they actually studied a lot of the recent modern metroidvania games to achieve a good overall product. At first glance i see they took a lot of inspiration from certain metroidvanias like metroid dread when it comes about the graphics and movement , map design and puzzles from ori, the nieche detail with the save points that have around them that breeze of yellow air is a reference to what afterimage did with their save point being also a tree but instead of breeze of air they added roots and branches that expanded of that tree in the background showing the way or that you are close to it. One feature tho i was hoping they would try and mimick would have been from Afterimage, that completely eliminates the rooms and loading screens. Afterimage map is one stage, you never enter rooms and you never encounter loading screens unless you teleport or move from one section of the map really fast to another that is far away, this can only happen in select locations (2 or 3 places). When i saw this i was impressed cause it had 60 fps, is the biggest map i have ever seen in a metroidvania and it was on the nintendo switch, weak hardware but somehow they managed to achieve this on unreal engine.
It was the same team that did Rayman Legends. so they already had amazing platforming under their belt. I had no doubt they could pull a metroidvania off.
@sofaking1180 Yeah, correct. However, when you see Ubisoft Montpellier, you shouldn't have that much worry since they have a track of good releases. Now, if it's the other Ubisoft division, then yeah, one should be skeptical.
One of the best reviews I've seen on the game so far; whenever a new game comes out I'm always waiting to hear your thoughts and perspectives. Thanks for all you do!
I played the demo last night and mannnnnnn, what a fun time it was! Runs really well, looks good on the switch with some good music. The cast of characters from the demo had personality and the gameplay was so crisp. Great job Ubisoft and great review! The switch had so many good to great metroidvanias and this joins the list!
@@SwitchUpYt absolutely, and what’s crazy is it’s Ubisoft haha, I know they catch a lot of flack and sometimes rightfully so but you gotta give it to them, they did great with this
Yeah same story here, nearly ignored this but picked up the demo because of the last vid. The gameplay is just great, handheld on the Switch is the best experience too. Straight on the wishlist.
Well this was a nice surpise. Just finished the demo. One good thing about the switch version is that you don’t need a Ubisoft account. You can just skip when it asks you make an account. I played the original on the Amiga 500 and even as a kid and it blew my little mind with the “realistic” movement although even then I remember the input delay using the joystick. This runs so smoothly and is incredibly responsive. It’s just fun to play. I’m going to pick this one up at some point.
_Love_ this era where accessibility options make gaming available to so many more people! Ubi also had EVERY reason to be so confident in this game that they released a demo prior to launch. I'm not too worried about them making yearly releases though. I hope that they're trying to keep smaller-scoped projects that a smaller development team can finish quickly and with a high degree of polish. I'll be playing Tears of the Kingdom until I die... I don't need another open world game that I'll never "finish." Please make shorter games a trend for 2024! Also, SwitchUp is _killing_ it. Your channel's been one of my go-to's for Switch reviews. In an era of "push it out the door and patch it until it's finished," I especially appreciate the "all patched up" series. Your humor, thoroughness, and follow-up is absolutely fantastic!
@@FelixS. I don’t think fans have to be mutually exclusive. Both can be really good games that people should check out. Some will enjoy the (possible) conclusion to the Metroid series after over 30 years of games. Some will enjoy the relaunch of another classic series, with the possibility to kick off a new chapter in gaming. Let’s not yuck anyone else’s yum.
@@stlwill brother I didn’t say you can’t be fan of both games :) I got my copy of PoP early from my local gamestore and I can wholeheartedly say the game is a good game - a very good games in parts - but it doesn’t come close to the brilliance of Metroid Dread. Visually, level structure, character and monster design, difficult, combat, controls, movement, bosses - all of those are at least one level above PoP. I am fan of both franchises.
Yep! I'm in! This is happening. The game looks incredible. Big metroidvania fan and this looks awesome. Amazing that it runs so well on Switch, probably looks gorgeous on the OLED, too. And as per usual, very thorough review from SwitchUp. Thanks, guys!
Yes! Metroidvania time, really looking forward to this one after all the amazing reviews is getting. Reminds me a little bit of the Ori games (the trees for saving/rest/teleporting; the amulet/badges/power ups; the swords and arrow; the possibility of getting to supposedly inaccessible places if you nail the jumps and platforming...)
YES A REVIEW!! I was hoping you would do one. I'm playing the demo endlessly to keep me happy until I pick it up eventually. The fluidity of movement and speed both in combat and traversal, feels like a great amalgamation of Dead Cells with Warrior Within. Additionally, the accessibility options are fantastic and seems to come from learning from the metroidvania giants that came before it, from marking important locations on your map to help you return later, to the ability to skip harder puzzles and completely tweakable combat and challenge elements. Thanks Mark, I'm glad to see you enjoyed it and maybe this might tide you over until Silk Song. Side note: The comparison to Hollow Knight piques my interest in it as well which, like Glen, I haven't played yet lol.
@@SwitchUpYt definitely worthy of a proper SwitchUp critique! I'm glad you did in addition to yesterday's sponsored video which was a great video too. I was so surprised when the demo popped up, I was expecting to have to roll the dice to see if my experience aligned with online reviews after release.
I’ve had this on my wishlist since I first saw the footage, so I’m extremely happy it doesn’t disappoint, high praise indeed! Downloading the demo as we speak…
There are no explosions here , and no one person has the right and the other does not , but rather the zeal of the players to compete for what is always better is what definitely makes us talk and nothing else .... 🤗 .
I remember playing the first of Prince of persia game with that nerve wrecking 60 minute game target timer, on a low end PC when I was about 5, and just how cool it felt to time the left mouse click just right to get the 3rd stab on the enemy in the first stage, watch him drop to die with a little music to break the silence, and then that cool 'putting the sword away' animation played! The animations were really groundbreaking then just watching the walk / run differences! How games have changed!!
I preordered this both because I am a big Prince of Persia fan and also because I trusted Ubisoft to pay attention to the Switch version, as they have released some technically impressive games on the system, such as Starlink, Mario & Rabbids, as well as (the underappreciated, in my opinion) Immortals: Fenyx Rising. I was happy to hear they are going for 60fps native resolution in both modes (even Metroid Dread isn't native resolution when docked, only portable) and I was even more happy to see your coverage, as well as Digital Foundry's video comparing versions and praising the Switch version! I am very much looking forward to my physical copy coming next week!
Love the shot at Jirard 🤣. Good review! Playing the demo - something about moving through the environments has a Metroid Dread feel (which I personally feel was the best-controlling game on Switch). Ubisoft did a great job!
The ONLY review/channel (and there's so many) worth its weight in gold! Been eagerly waiting for this game tbh and will definitely be picking it up once I can afford it. Xmas and the kids have skint me 😅🤣 wouldn't have it any other way though ❤
I'm currently playing 'Ori and the Will of the Whisps' (bought on sale following your recommendation!) and really, really enjoying it. This looks very similar (in a good way!) so I'm sure I'll be dipping into this asap.
I just finished the game. I totally loved it. It has some great interesting ideas for platforming that blew me away, and some puzzles I was left in awe as in how they came up with them. I played it in Spanish and I have to say the dub was solid. Highly recommended.
I love how in the last video you guys were saying how the ambiance music is one composer and the tension music was another?? I think that's so cool. I love when things mesh so well from multiple people.
Imagine this running smooth at 60 fps meanwhile The Last Faith, Moonscars and other 2D metroidvanias can’t keep up a solid 60 and some are even locked at 30. Badly optimized those games are if this can run so smooth. Btw, nice burn to Team Cherry. 😏
I didn't like the demo of this game, but then it went on sale and I picked it up. I put off even playing it for a few months, and just picked it up last week. I just love it so much! I feel like the game is not as predictable as I was expecting, and I feel the controls are easy to use.
I downloaded the demo after seeing your preview last night, and I gotta say it's a pretty tasty game! It's TOIGHT (like a toiger) really smooth platforming, and nice combat. My only real complaint would be the voice acting... was there really that many cockneys in ancient Persia? Just lacks a little gravitas!
At long last a Prince game worthy of the Sands of Time! Been looking forward to this ❤ Oh, and it's not another roguesoulslike. Win win in my case! (I get the feeling this one's a contender for SwitchUp GOTY or at least GOTM/GOTQ1 😊
Wow, what a score gonna have to check out the demo. Last Prince of Persian game I played was on the PlayStation 2 so I have been away for a while. Great video
Wow, before you review came out i thought the value score may be lower due to the price tag in comparison to other metroidvanias from indie developers but im really looking forward to this one!!!
I remember in my younger days I would often find the Wak Wak tree, make it grow tall, and procede to restore my health... Seriously, why would they name it that 😆
I was somewhat put off by the price, although to be expected from a big dev like Ubisoft. However given how polished this looks across gameplay, graphics and music, you do get a lot of bang for your buck. Great review Mark. Think we get a taste of your early skepticism of this game but pleased to see how you were happily surprised by it! This is definitely going on my wish list!
I was one of the weirdos that got excited about this when it was announced. I never thought it'd be running this well on Switch though. "Happy Days" :)
This does look amazing. I've been a Prince fan from the first one, although The Shadow and the Flame was my fave. And HK is my favorite metroidvania so saying this will help with the Silksong wait is fantastic news.
I love that you didn't beat around the bush and immediately let the viewer know that this was going to be a positive review. Keep up the great work. Switch 2 "should" be here later this year, so hopefully you guys keep this channel going for years.
It is not at all about providing positive or negative evaluations , but rather providing objective and transparent evaluations that respect the player’s logic and help him choose whether to purchase or not , far from marketing games or unjustified hatred of companies .
Love all your reviews been a big fan since i bought my switch cant really find any other channels that have influenced me to buy other games ive never played keep up with the great reviews guys
I was so confused until I remembered your video on the game yesterday was a preview 😂 Looks like this one's a great one, I'll check out the demo and then cry about the fact that there's yet another good game on my wishlist 😂
This is a great example of why thorough review of a game is so valuable: I had questioned the quality of this game because of the art design. It looked too much like a mobile game to me, and my first impression did not seem great. But learning about how great the game is in so many different respects really paints a positive picture.
I played the demo last night after watching your other video and I had such a fun time playing. This is not my usual genre nowadays but the game looks beautiful and the controls are smooth and easy to understand. Can't wait for the full release even if I know I'll get more than a little bit frustrated with the most challenging puzzle/platforming sections lol.
Demo was a bit short, would have liked to fight the boss there, but omg do the controls feels good. Best in any platformer in a long time, competing with Celeste and Ori. Can’t wait to play.
I was already sold on the other video. But my goodness, does it look great. And I’m not even the biggest metroidvania fan! Regarding the style, I don’t mind the more “modern look”. As long as they don’t make the Prince of Persia white *cough* like some Hollywood adaptation *cough*
Great video as always, taking screenshots to attach to the map markers is such a genius mechanic it's weird it took so long for a game in this genre to implement it. (I never use screeenshots/photo mode for personal or social use, so I don't know if there was a way to do this on other games). A question though, does it have any NG+ mechanics (like Blasphemous for example) that make it more replayable without just increasing enemy health ?
It looks amazing and has been getting some great reviews. I was skeptical given Ubisoft's track record but they pulled it off. I can't wait to get this. Thanks for the review
As soon as this was announced at the direct I was interested, not just because it was a PoP game but because it was my type of game and it looked like it played flawlessly. Honestly I adored Immortals and this gave me the same vibes. Played the demo and it made me want it more. Your enthusiasm for the game seeps out in your tone, so your review is music to my ears
Ubisoft games are mostly boring to me after playing many ACs, a bit of Far cry and Riders Republic but this looks great. Also loved the little "I am a completionist .... in the right way." 😂
Really impressed. Like you guys, I wasn't expecting much from this but looks like ol' Ubisoft is doing good here. On to the wishlist it goes! Now to try the demo...
This is exactly what we want from this company , to compete with itself first in the case of the Rayman series and then with the giants of Metroidvania games in the case of Ori , Hollow Knight and others . Good luck for that .
This is such a fantastic game, I have been loving it so far. The map is really BIG and varied, I want more from this series in this style of gameplay. Heres hoping, good review.
@@ZamWeazle 😂😂😂 Have you tried the demo as well though? It's so good. Grime is finally coming to switch. And i hear it's complete with dlcs or something. Metroidvania fans is eating good this year. 😋
I already have a few metroidvanias in my backlog and on my wish list, buuuut this is still getting added. I’ll likely wait for a sale, though. Thanks for the thorough review, Mark!
Great review as always. I know EXACTLY what you mean by being made to feel like you've solved a puzzle that surely very few people have figured out. It's the sign of fantastic puzzle design. That part of the review alone made me pause & add this to the Deku Deals wishlist!
Thanks for the review! I’m definitely saving my pennies for this one. The movement looks very ‘Dead Cells’ to me with that flowing ‘Swoopy, swishy’ satisfying style. Awesome 🤩
Hell yeah. So happy with the reception this game is getting. And what a way to kick off 2024. How great would it be to have another metroid game this year and silksong 😊
I was sold as soon as I got started playing the demo. I loved the SoT trilogy and would love to see them show up on the Switch as well, but this game blew my mind with its fluid traversal, deeply satisfying combat, and old-school metroidvania feeling. This is the game to make me stop worrying why SotN isn't on this system.
Finally getting around to playing this game and loving it. I was in the mood to rewatch a review of it before my next gaming session when I realized I never watched this one. I put it in my watch later and forgot about it. Also I think you guys came out with 2 similar videos on it but 1 wasn't a review and I probably watched that and got confused. I put down god of war ragnarok for this and honestly enjoying this more right now. I'm playing it so much on TV I'm wondering if I should have gott3n it for playstation. It's such a handheld-esque game though so I had to.
First thing - you guys are great and honestly think SwitchUp is the best channel for Switch stuff. Regrading the game: how is the handheld performance and visuals?

Price is not a criterion for the quality of the game . The important thing is not to fall into the trap of repetition and boredom .
For sure mate. I'm pleased to be proved wrong. Mark
I was one of the weirdos that got excited about this when it was announced. I never thought it'd be running this well on Switch though. "Happy Days" :)
Just picked this up on sale. Can't wait to play it your review was amazing!!
This does look amazing. I've been a Prince fan from the first one, although The Shadow and the Flame was my fave. And HK is my favorite metroidvania so saying this will help with the Silksong wait is fantastic news.
I clearly see that it will be a tough competition with Hollow Knight 2 and Prince of Persia's Lost Crown , and that's what we players want .
@@salasalsa-mb5gwhopefully I did that 🙏
As soon as i started playing this i was immediately taken back to Castlevania SOTN. This game is incredible!
Yeah that was a sponsored video - this is the full Shebang! Mark
Thank you for in depth review of this game. Now I am so interested in getting this game
No need to say no more.. Definitely a must buy for me..
That third puzzle from them glowing doors JESUS Christ fried all of my brain cells I swear LOL it was so hardddddd 😂😭
Metroidvania is my favourite genre. Maybe the market is a bit over saturated now? But I don't care this looks great
I really am excited to see more games like this. Some times open world 80000 hour games are to much.
I Hate Prince of Persia The Lost Crown
I Hate Prince of Persia Series
I Hate Metroidvania
I Hate Ubisoft
I HATE UBISOFT
bro, there are more of these types of games then open world
I hope it's the start of a series. I have only played the demo so far (the game comes out on the 18th in EU) but I'm already in love.
This one definitely has blowing up positively. Can't wait to try it.
This review got me excited for this game! I was on the fence if I should get it and now it got me hyped! 🎉
Ah good stuff!
i'm so happy this game is reviewing well. We Prince of Persia fans needed this W!!
I’m definitely trying the demo now, thanks for the review, accurate as always
Played the demo earlier and I was left wanting more when it ended. It's brilliant and I can't wait to play this.
Definitely, you'll love the full game. Mark
@@SwitchUpYt can't wait. Thanks for the reviews. You've saved me a lot of wasted money.
Looks amazing although I WAS hoping to see a return to Warrior Within, it's ok since they went the way of the Metroidvania.👍🤘
2:45 thanks for the amazing review guys and wanted to ask what Gamepad is this ?
A reversion to the Persian immersion creates an explersion in my pants
Demo was a bit short, would have liked to fight the boss there, but omg do the controls feels good. Best in any platformer in a long time, competing with Celeste and Ori. Can’t wait to play.
I was already sold on the other video. But my goodness, does it look great.
And I’m not even the biggest metroidvania fan!
Regarding the style, I don’t mind the more “modern look”. As long as they don’t make the Prince of Persia white *cough* like some Hollywood adaptation *cough*
Gareth Coker did the soundrack on this too? Love that guys work.
Woooow did not expect this! I'll definitely be downloading the demo to check it out 😸 thanks for another great review guys!
Already want it but I'm skint but is that not what credit cards are for? Maybe not maybe I don't know
Great to hear good things about this one. Metroidvanias are my jam. I've never played a Prince of Persia game, this might have to be my first!
Due to embargo we aren't allowed to talk about anything past the mission with the snake I showed
Apparently it does. It's got several difficulties and modifiers for greater replayability.
It looks amazing and has been getting some great reviews. I was skeptical given Ubisoft's track record but they pulled it off. I can't wait to get this. Thanks for the review
I know that feeling well from Ubisoft... 😅😅😅 ...
Aww man I got hyped we were getting a prince of Persia game like the ps2 games. Not really into side scrollers
The Sands of Time is getting remastered but it's been on hold for a while now for some undisclosed reason
I hope this revives the franchise and we get a 3d adventure or a remake of sands of time!!
Ubisoft games are mostly boring to me after playing many ACs, a bit of Far cry and Riders Republic but this looks great.
Also loved the little "I am a completionist .... in the right way." 😂
Haha 😉
ok .... 😂😂😂😂😂 ....
Definitely looking forward to it when it releases! 👍
Really impressed. Like you guys, I wasn't expecting much from this but looks like ol' Ubisoft is doing good here. On to the wishlist it goes! Now to try the demo...
“Ubi mad to skip this” 😂 great review as always!
So glad this turned out well! Definitely picking this up!🤙
I tried the demo and now i just cant get it out of my head. The game lives rent free in my head now.
As a big rayman fan, im so glad this turned out good. Cant wait to play it!
You'll really enjoy it. Mark
I want this. I want it bad. I want to play this game bad. Demo here i come!
Let me know how you get on with the demo smiley
@@SwitchUpYt im playing the demo right now. It's glorious! Into my wishlist this goes for sure. 😋
Congratulations , I wish you more ... 😂😂😂😂😂
I was thinking about you as soon as I saw the end credits of the review. I thought that guys backlog Is probably going to have to wait....😝
@@ZamWeazle 😂😂😂
Have you tried the demo as well though? It's so good.
Grime is finally coming to switch. And i hear it's complete with dlcs or something. Metroidvania fans is eating good this year. 😋
Thanks for the great reviews as always SwitchUp! Thanks for all you guys bring to the community 😊
Does the switch version support achievements or trophies like the ori collection did on switch?
I already have a few metroidvanias in my backlog and on my wish list, buuuut this is still getting added. I’ll likely wait for a sale, though. Thanks for the thorough review, Mark!
Great review as always.
I know EXACTLY what you mean by being made to feel like you've solved a puzzle that surely very few people have figured out. It's the sign of fantastic puzzle design.
That part of the review alone made me pause & add this to the Deku Deals wishlist!
I'm surprised how many people have that feeling haha very cool. Mark
I Hate Prince of Persia The Lost Crown
I Hate Prince of Persia Series
I Hate Metroidvania
I Hate Ubisoft
I HATE UBISOFT
Thanks for the review! I’m definitely saving my pennies for this one. The movement looks very ‘Dead Cells’ to me with that flowing ‘Swoopy, swishy’ satisfying style. Awesome 🤩
wishlist updated! haha
Hell yeah. So happy with the reception this game is getting. And what a way to kick off 2024. How great would it be to have another metroid game this year and silksong 😊
I’m glad to hear that Ubisoft hit this one out of the park
I was sold as soon as I got started playing the demo. I loved the SoT trilogy and would love to see them show up on the Switch as well, but this game blew my mind with its fluid traversal, deeply satisfying combat, and old-school metroidvania feeling.
This is the game to make me stop worrying why SotN isn't on this system.
@2:16 that is exactly how I felt after 90% of the TOTK puzzles 😂😂😂
Yes❤❤❤🎉haha
this looks soo much better than I expected. Do you thnik it will get the normal ubisoft discounts down the line?
Most likely you can get the physical for £38 already
Finally getting around to playing this game and loving it.
I was in the mood to rewatch a review of it before my next gaming session when I realized I never watched this one.
I put it in my watch later and forgot about it. Also I think you guys came out with 2 similar videos on it but 1 wasn't a review and I probably watched that and got confused.
I put down god of war ragnarok for this and honestly enjoying this more right now. I'm playing it so much on TV I'm wondering if I should have gott3n it for playstation.
It's such a handheld-esque game though so I had to.
I loved the demo, but the price point some should have been a little lower, like 30 instead of 50 dollars.
Scoping the demo out tonight. If it works for me I will wishlist this one for a sale. Ubi has pretty consistent price drops throughout the year.
I very rarely get excited for games anymore...but.... I'm genuinely excited for this game😀 Can't wait👍🏼🥳
Now give us a Rayman Legends sequel with metroidvania elements!
Cool ...
First thing - you guys are great and honestly think SwitchUp is the best channel for Switch stuff. Regrading the game: how is the handheld performance and visuals?
3:16 yoooo was that some shade directed at we-all-know-who?! 😂
Hopefully means more Prince of Persia to come.
