I built this deck a while ago and is was semi-effective. The deck really does fall apart if you don't protect Shirei. One of the best creatures I used was Bottle Gnomes. I know three life doesn't seem like much, but incidental three life over the course of a game while you're grabbing back everything else is really good. One of the traps is Abyssal Gatekeeper. Too often I'd end up having to sac Shirei because someone would remove another one of my other creatures in response, slowing the engine down because she already costs 4B. Never play this thing unless you're in the late game (low spot removal) or have at least another creature out PLUS your commander. Hope of Ghirapur is a nice addition for cheap as well, because not only does it block flying (something the deck has a hard time doing), it can actually save you from someone casting a board wipe if you can tell its coming. I'd also add in Bontu's Monument as that helped me stay afloat and mitigate some of the commander tax that was built up. Overall the deck is fun to play, but HEAVILY relies on the commander that keep it around is integral. Hammer of Nazahn is effective mostly because when it comes in, it auto-equips to a creature so you don't have to pay the equip cost. Infernal Tribute is probably one of your best sac outlets if you're going to upgrade because drawing cards is gud.
I agree. Definitely feel like a big flaw in most of the decks featured on this channel is that they are very fragile because they are so commander-centric. If someone kills your commander, most of these decks turn off
I'd also add oversold cemetery. You can let Shirei die and grab it back on upkeep (no tax from hand), and get back bigger creatures (Gary, Z. cutthroat) or small creatures that died without shirei in play.
I ran Sheri in a budget League people figured out that the deck relys on the commander. I got beat in every pod. People knew exactly what i was up too fixed that fast!
Heyo, I know this is an old video, but I just thought I'd give you a heads up about the Desecrated Tomb interaction. Since Shirei creates a delayed trigger when a creature dies, and each delayed trigger triggers separately, you get 1 bat per creature that comes back because they dont all return at the same time. They DO all return on the same step, but because separate triggers are causing them to return, they technically return individually within that step, so desecrated tomb is WAY better with Shirei than you thought.

Skittering Surveyor finally made it into a deck! It has been in the opening of every video, when it says that the deck is "focused." Fun aside, this deck is awesome. I've played Shirei in regular 60 card casually and it is a blast! Seems far to risky in commander though, as people can just hold up countermagic/removal for him. The answers against permission are just not plentiful enough without reducing the potency of the deck. Regardless, among the Monoblack commanders, this is by far the most fun and fair.
The card Morality Shift is what got me into Mono Black. So many funky things you can do with the card, and with so many tutors making it go off is easy. (Diabolic Revelations is a tutor I highly recommend in black.)
Its crazy to see some of the price adjustments since this video released. Pitiless plunderer increased by nearly 100 times the cost in this video compared to today.
I play a Shirei deck and you nailed the creatures. I also learned a couple new protection enchants, so thank you. Black cat can be brutal because when it dies, an opponent discards at random. Troublesome card for them
Shirei is one of my favorite cards of all time! I tinker with the decks i have him in all the time. i would suggest empty the catacombs and mortuary mire for this one.
I found Hecatomb is really good for this deck too. Considering you already have a critical mass of creatures when you play this card, it's basically a way to ping things or players to death.
Third deck I buy that you create! I love these decks so much... Only problem I have now is that I have 7 commander decks.... Atleast I don't do standard and modern anymore :D
You are doing a super job, looking for upgrade proposals for my locust god deck though :) It seems to get killed so fast after it comes out. I always have to have 1-2 draw/wheel spells ready when he is played or he just gets oblitirated.
I played with someone who built this deck. Except it had 40 shadowborn apostles in it. It was actually hilarious. He only ran 2 demons, but he ran a lot of cards dependant on devotion like Abhorrent Overlord and Grey Merchant, as well as having a ball with Strionic Resonator. Good times.
Hell's Caretaker is another great budget include , it not only is recurrable with shirei, it can also recurr him and others that slipped by shirei´s grasp.

Yeah this popped up in my recommended cause I built a Shirei deck and wanted to give it a quick watch to see if there’s any interesting tech I might have missed. This caught me VERY off guard lol.
Shirei is one of my favorite commander decks! So much cool stuff you can do with cards that seem really bad. I like that it can be kind of "tool boxy", with a lot of options that you can have for different circumstances. Up against a graveyard deck? Ruin Rat will eat their stuff and also has deathtouch! Facing a spell heavy deck? Hope of Ghirapur can soft lock them out of the game. Need an army? Marsh Flitter! Need life? Blood Artist. Keeping Shirei alive is obviously critical. Hexproof effects are great against spot removal. Indestructible and regeneration are useful against many wraths (and the flash on Blessing of Leeches can create some great "gotchas"). But there are always potential workarounds. Exile based removal and bounce, for example (a well timed Cyclonic Rift will wreck you, even without overloading!). So another direction you could go to combat these threats is hand attack. Black Cat, Burglar Rat, Disciple of Phenax, Pilfering Imp. Frickin MIND SLASH. Take their answers. And their threats. And their everything. Leave them topdecking the crap left by your thoughtpicker witch while you drain them into the ground! ...So now I've got to get a Thoughtpicker Witch.
Could definitely do with some more removal, tutors and graveyard recursion/protection. There's quite a few creatures that could be easily cut to give you a bit more flexibility. Razaketh, The Foulblooded should also be on the list - he's a big, scary sac outlet that tutors.
First thing, love that this is a proper shirei deck and not shadowborn apostles. Second, did you skim over chimney imp or just deem it too unfun? It’s a pretty powerful lock once shirei is up and running.

What about Killing Wave? It's a card I always liked, but I think in this deck it can do wanders: you can tap 1 black to sacrifice any creature you want, or tap more and force your opponents to sacrifice creatures, while you may handle the board wipe better!
Dang, this deck is worth like $100 dollars now. I wish I would have built it sooner. it definitely has some great new budget options though like: Priest of the forgotten god Whisper, Blood liturgist cauldron familiar yarok'd fenlurker serrated scorpion vindictive vampire I'm trying to build it modified for under $40 right now.
~~~Some notable upgrades from recent sets!~~~ Syr Konrad ~1USD expensive cmc but better zulaport cutthroat in this deck. should basically win you the game. I slot in over slumlord. Blight Mound ~1USD for what is pretty much a strictly (subjectively) better Open the Graves. Why not Have menace-y 2/1's that gain you life? Serrated Scorpion (Bulk) Strictly better (objectively) Infectious Host. Yarok's Fenlurker (Bulk) an absolutely brutal card that will make you the arch-enemy very quickly Gift of Doom ~1USD protection for Shirei that can dodge both creature and enchantment removal! make board wipes your friend. Clattering Augur (bulk) cantrips and can be recursion if you do get wiped to help stabilize. Shambling Ghast (bullk) my poor man's version of Pitiless Plunderer since it is now a 15$ card. Get a treasure or kill a mana dork- every turn! Woe Strider ~1USD viscera seer copy 2 in a deck that really needs free sac outlets Plumb the Forbidden ~1USD Hopefully draw into something that wins the game- Gary, or sac outlet, or an "artist" effect, etc Big Game Hunter - it is on the upgrade list but I think it got reprinted and is dirt cheap (0.14USD) now. Hits a lot of commanders... Witch's Cottage (bulk) basically a free spell in a mono black deck, and it is a swamp for coffers. Bastion of Remembrance ~3$ basically a zulaport cutthroat enchantment. I don't know if it is an improvement- But more copies of powerful effects is usually more beter ~~~Things I have learned playing this deck:~~~ -Tap abilities need to be exceptionally strong to make the cut, since you have to wait a whole turn cycle to use it the first time, and then you only get to use it once per your turns- you really want to be generating value asap when you drop something and iterating it on every player's turn -Your commander will become a target and has only 2 toughness. This is sad, and if you notice your local meta is catching on to kill her on sight, try and slot in the "swiftfoot boots" and cards like "Professor's Warning". between hexproof and indestructible you *should* be good. -Avoid playing Shirei until you already have a value engine on board to profit from, or a good way to protect her. -Bogbrew Witch, Festering Newt and Bubbling Cauldron are a cute combo, but slow and not worth all 3 card slots. It took me several times being very disappointed to draw into any one of these cards to realize this. So basically I added and then cut this bad combo. ~~~Upgrades I have made and their dollar amount(ish)~~~ High Market ~0.50USD a "free" sac outlet (basically costs one mana, but doesn't take a spell slot) Priest of the Forgotten Gods $3 and so worth it. one of 2 tap abilities I kept in the final deck. Do note you can target yourself if you need an extra sac for the low cost of 2 life. Bolas Citadel $5 usually wins game for 6 mana Westvale Abby $10 a land that can win you the game for 6 mana (I had one laying around and just threw it in- and wowsers. Several wins off that) ~~~This deck's high dollar Wishlist~~~ Cabal coffers Cabal Stronghold Altar of Dementia Phyrexian Altar Ashnod's Altar Yawgmoth, Thran Physician - Dear god. Basically necropotence on a stick. and a kill spell, and it digs for Gary, and make him recur off Shirei. It is undoubtedly the best lieutenant of the deck, with the price tag to match. Dictate of Erebos effects Meathook massacre- you may be playing it on with X=0 and that is entirely OK, the static effect is just worth it.
Yeeeeeesssss!!!! I recently tried to build a demon sacrifice deck but it didn't quite work like I wanted it too but I did get a lot of these cards for that deck. Perfect commander for the sacrifice theme! This will be the next deck o build great video! You sir are by far my favorite channel keep the videos coming!
Altar of the Brood can be good in this deck as well. Especially if you you have ways to get back artifacts and need to deal with opponents gaining life.
First off, you definitely should have renamed another tactic to Deja Vu to have two if them in there to mess with people. Second, love the tech! Keep up the good work!
I have a deck very similar to this one. It really is very fun. I include skull clamp and the the four mana black tutor. Diabolic Tutor. Sometimes it does great but sometimes it gets bogged down when I cannot find a sac outlet or the correct removal.
Have you found skullclamp to be effective? In testing I found that it hurts since the creature doesn't come back due to being bigger than 1 power with the +1
The Commander's Quarters: skull clamp stays on the battlefield because it is an artifact. Thus when the end step trigger happens on shirei, the creature is back down to the original 1 power.
@@Jasonclark7373 unfortunately it doesn't work that way. Here is some clarification from the Gatherer site: "Shirei’s ability only triggers if the creature’s power immediately before leaving the battlefield is 1 or less, regardless of its power in your graveyard."
although super rarely helpful, Krav can be used to make you (or another player if they agree to) shuffle your deck with its partner effect. Not usually important but its not nothing
So far I made it to 08:19 as I'm writing this comment. I have a deck I'm working on that, while most of the pieces aren't really budget, I do have a lot of things that are that are wonderful to sacrifice. Things like Reassembling Skeleton and Dread Wanderer. A little spendy, but Gravecrawler would be perfect in decks like ours. For token generation there's things like Sifter of Skulls and Pawn of Ulamog, both of which can help us with mana. Another good source for tokens is Open the Graves. By far my favorite win con is Thoughtpicker Witch. It not only gives me a way to gain info on what my opponent has, but I can effectively remove their entire library if I do it right. (My way uses Phyrexian Altar, which... isn't budget...)
I probably wouldn't build this deck but it's still a cool build! I'm still working on making enough bread for that tricolor dino deck from a month or two ago. Thanks for making deck building more affordable!

My friend runs a Shirei shadowborn apostle deck with demon tribal, so its nice to see a deck that wins with other means. Also I'd like to vote that you make a Zo-Zu the Punisher deck next, or a Meloku the Clouded Mirror.
I know this is an old video, but Heartless Summoning is amazing, it shut's down Viscera Seer and some others, but the cost reduction and not needing to sacrifice, since many things enter and die. I'd say it's a top card in my list.
Oh I do have a few episodes on infinite combos. Zacama and Lyzolda are built completely around infinite combos, and Jhoira is basically infinite too. And then there are ones like Zada and Adeliz which have effective infinite combos in them
Ah. They didnt seem like infinite combo generals. Still, Id like to see what you can do with Mikaeus. Id still also like to see what you could do with Glissa, The Traitor as well.
wing rattle scarcrow and putrid goblin can work for two sacrafices each a turn. tree of perdition could possibly work with Triskaidekaphobia, the enchantment that on your up keep makes each player lose the game if their life total is 13. then either make everyone lose or gain one life.
Have you ever considered making a section in your videos thats like "the next level" for suggesting cards that are outside the "budget" mentality for the people who suddenly really like a deck and are willing to put in the additional greens towards the deck? would be very similar to the "reasonable upgrades" section of your videos but obviously you would be looking at some of the cards that are like "holy moly this is good but its like 30 dollars :V" interested in your thoughts on the matter.
Definitely have thought about it, as of now I am leaning towards not doing something like that. Just doesn't seem to be in the budget spirit of the show.

Great deck as usual, glad that you put black market in the upgrades, that card is nasty in this deck, i have seen it generate more than 30 mana if not dealt with, but why no crypt of agadeem? Sure it isent a black market but its quite nice when you are going of and sacrificing like 10 creatures, or if someone board wipes it helps a lot with the rebuilding Ps: now that my predictions have come true its time... to hack into your computer again... i mean do some deckbuilding totaly not a hacker

any reason phyrexian plaugelord didn't make an appearance? I know it's not 1 power but being able to drain down indestructible creatures with over 5 creatures a turn is amazing for this deck.I've also noticed that night of soul's betrayal are useful for stopping many token decks while also enabling gary to benefit from the trigger.
this and Meren are my favorite commanders. I'm still trying to find any other commander that is like them. all other aristocrats decks are to based on tokens and sacrificing them.

First thing, love that this is a proper shirei deck and not shadowborn apostles.
Second, did you skim over chimney imp or just deem it too unfun? It’s a pretty powerful lock once shirei is up and running.
It's powerful but costly. Tried to keep the CMC down to take advantage of casting a lot of things
@@TheCommandersQuarters Fair enough. Friend of mine has a similar build with it in. I really like how both zada and this encourage you to play bizarre forgotten limited cards, and imp is iconic as such.

What about Killing Wave? It's a card I always liked, but I think in this deck it can do wanders: you can tap 1 black to sacrifice any creature you want, or tap more and force your opponents to sacrifice creatures, while you may handle the board wipe better!
A great card to consider!

Syr Konrad ~1USD expensive cmc but better zulaport cutthroat in this deck. should basically win you the game. I slot in over slumlord.
Blight Mound ~1USD for what is pretty much a strictly (subjectively) better Open the Graves. Why not Have menace-y 2/1's that gain you life?
Serrated Scorpion (Bulk) Strictly better (objectively) Infectious Host.
Yarok's Fenlurker (Bulk) an absolutely brutal card that will make you the arch-enemy very quickly
Gift of Doom ~1USD protection for Shirei that can dodge both creature and enchantment removal! make board wipes your friend.
Clattering Augur (bulk) cantrips and can be recursion if you do get wiped to help stabilize.
Shambling Ghast (bullk) my poor man's version of Pitiless Plunderer since it is now a 15$ card. Get a treasure or kill a mana dork- every turn!
Woe Strider ~1USD viscera seer copy 2 in a deck that really needs free sac outlets
Plumb the Forbidden ~1USD Hopefully draw into something that wins the game- Gary, or sac outlet, or an "artist" effect, etc
Big Game Hunter - it is on the upgrade list but I think it got reprinted and is dirt cheap (0.14USD) now. Hits a lot of commanders...
Witch's Cottage (bulk) basically a free spell in a mono black deck, and it is a swamp for coffers.
Bastion of Remembrance ~3$ basically a zulaport cutthroat enchantment. I don't know if it is an improvement- But more copies of powerful effects is usually more beter
~~~Things I have learned playing this deck:~~~
-Tap abilities need to be exceptionally strong to make the cut, since you have to wait a whole turn cycle to use it the first time, and then you only get to use it once per your turns- you really want to be generating value asap when you drop something and iterating it on every player's turn
-Your commander will become a target and has only 2 toughness. This is sad, and if you notice your local meta is catching on to kill her on sight, try and slot in the "swiftfoot boots" and cards like "Professor's Warning". between hexproof and indestructible you *should* be good.
-Avoid playing Shirei until you already have a value engine on board to profit from, or a good way to protect her.
-Bogbrew Witch, Festering Newt and Bubbling Cauldron are a cute combo, but slow and not worth all 3 card slots. It took me several times being very disappointed to draw into any one of these cards to realize this. So basically I added and then cut this bad combo.

High Market ~0.50USD a "free" sac outlet (basically costs one mana, but doesn't take a spell slot)
Priest of the Forgotten Gods $3 and so worth it. one of 2 tap abilities I kept in the final deck. Do note you can target yourself if you need an extra sac for the low cost of 2 life.
Bolas Citadel $5 usually wins game for 6 mana
Westvale Abby $10 a land that can win you the game for 6 mana (I had one laying around and just threw it in- and wowsers. Several wins off that)

Meathook massacre- you may be playing it on with X=0 and that is entirely OK, the static effect is just worth it.
Yeeeeeesssss!!!! I recently tried to build a demon sacrifice deck but it didn't quite work like I wanted it too but I did get a lot of these cards for that deck. Perfect commander for the sacrifice theme! This will be the next deck o build great video! You sir are by far my favorite channel keep the videos coming!

Altar of the Brood can be good in this deck as well. Especially if you you have ways to get back artifacts and need to deal with opponents gaining life.
Definitely a consideration!
First off, you definitely should have renamed another tactic to Deja Vu to have two if them in there to mess with people.

I have a deck very similar to this one. It really is very fun. I include skull clamp and the the four mana black tutor. Diabolic Tutor. Sometimes it does great but sometimes it gets bogged down when I cannot find a sac outlet or the correct removal.
Have you found skullclamp to be effective? In testing I found that it hurts since the creature doesn't come back due to being bigger than 1 power with the +1
The Commander's Quarters: skull clamp stays on the battlefield because it is an artifact. Thus when the end step trigger happens on shirei, the creature is back down to the original 1 power.
@@Jasonclark7373 unfortunately it doesn't work that way. Here is some clarification from the Gatherer site: "Shirei’s ability only triggers if the creature’s power immediately before leaving the battlefield is 1 or less, regardless of its power in your graveyard."

So far I made it to 08:19 as I'm writing this comment. I have a deck I'm working on that, while most of the pieces aren't really budget, I do have a lot of things that are that are wonderful to sacrifice. Things like Reassembling Skeleton and Dread Wanderer. A little spendy, but Gravecrawler would be perfect in decks like ours. For token generation there's things like Sifter of Skulls and Pawn of Ulamog, both of which can help us with mana. Another good source for tokens is Open the Graves. By far my favorite win con is Thoughtpicker Witch. It not only gives me a way to gain info on what my opponent has, but I can effectively remove their entire library if I do it right. (My way uses Phyrexian Altar, which... isn't budget...)

My friend runs a Shirei shadowborn apostle deck with demon tribal, so its nice to see a deck that wins with other means.
Also I'd like to vote that you make a Zo-Zu the Punisher deck next, or a Meloku the Clouded Mirror.

I know this is an old video, but Heartless Summoning is amazing, it shut's down Viscera Seer and some others, but the cost reduction and not needing to sacrifice, since many things enter and die. I'd say it's a top card in my list.

I noticed you have no infinite combo decks for the spikes. You should do a commander excluded with Mikaeus, The Unhallowed 😉
Oh I do have a few episodes on infinite combos. Zacama and Lyzolda are built completely around infinite combos, and Jhoira is basically infinite too. And then there are ones like Zada and Adeliz which have effective infinite combos in them
Ah. They didnt seem like infinite combo generals. Still, Id like to see what you can do with Mikaeus. Id still also like to see what you could do with Glissa, The Traitor as well.

wing rattle scarcrow and putrid goblin can work for two sacrafices each a turn. tree of perdition could possibly work with Triskaidekaphobia, the enchantment that on your up keep makes each player lose the game if their life total is 13. then either make everyone lose or gain one life.

Have you ever considered making a section in your videos thats like "the next level" for suggesting cards that are outside the "budget" mentality for the people who suddenly really like a deck and are willing to put in the additional greens towards the deck?
would be very similar to the "reasonable upgrades" section of your videos but obviously you would be looking at some of the cards that are like "holy moly this is good but its like 30 dollars :V"

Definitely have thought about it, as of now I am leaning towards not doing something like that. Just doesn't seem to be in the budget spirit of the show.

i only ask because many people (including myself) start off with a budget version of a deck and then fall in love with it and want to tip their wallet upside-down for their favourite commander.

Great deck as usual, glad that you put black market in the upgrades, that card is nasty in this deck, i have seen it generate more than 30 mana if not dealt with, but why no crypt of agadeem? Sure it isent a black market but its quite nice when you are going of and sacrificing like 10 creatures, or if someone board wipes it helps a lot with the rebuilding

any reason phyrexian plaugelord didn't make an appearance? I know it's not 1 power but being able to drain down indestructible creatures with over 5 creatures a turn is amazing for this deck.I've also noticed that night of soul's betrayal are useful for stopping many token decks while also enabling gary to benefit from the trigger.
Grave pact, crypt ghast, magus of the coffers, and nirkana revnant would be good includes too

I've played this deck a bunch and would like to mention pentavus and other similar 0/0 artifact creatures.
Going with mono black decks....why not horobi, death's wail? Bet it would test your budget building skills
this and Meren are my favorite commanders. I'm still trying to find any other commander that is like them. all other aristocrats decks are to based on tokens and sacrificing them.
There is always Athreos, god of passage?
