I stayed up all night on a school night watching TWC coverage of this. At 6a.m. I went to bed. When my mom came and got me to wakeup for school about 30 minutes later, I told her I was sick and got to stay home. Lol.

It really is neat remembering what the weather channel was like in 1992. Forecasting has sure evolved over the past 28 years. Weird how they show Hurricane Andrew as having winds of 140 mph, when in fact, Hurricane Andrew actually had winds of 175 mph with gusts to 200 mph!

In fact, the National Hurricane Center actually got a gust of 164 mph before their anemometer broke!

The anemometers didn't survive the violent winds, which is why for years, it was classified as a Category 4, then right around the 10 year anniversary, in August 2002, more research was done, and it was upgraded to a Category 5. I always questioned it's Category 4 status for those years.

@@ILoveOldTWC I remember, the National Hurricane Center recorded a gust of 164 mph before their rooftop anemometer blew apart. That is a Category 5 right there.

@@triton115 Of course it's not a gust, it's the sustained winds that make it consistent with a Category 5. The sustained winds were at 165 mph. But 164 mph wind gust at the NHC, was NOT in the strongest part of the storm. It was much worse in Homestead, Florida City, Cutler Ridge, those places.

Note you see the radar at 6:48 with John Hope and Keith Westerlage as the one that looks like the one TWC normally uses......but by 15:56 with Vince Miller, that's NOT the same radar!!!! The winds of incoming Andrew had knocked over Miami's NWS radar tower - Vince mentions it at 54:03! This new map was a composite of Key West (EYW), MIami (MIA), Palm Beach Intl Airport (W. Palm Beach/PBI), and Tampa (TBW) overlayed to get the animation you see for rest of the event.

You know you're getting old, when seeing the crappy tracking(the tape quality, not the forecast) on an old VHS tape makes you happy 😂
I'm gonna guess this tape was used a few times. I think I was almost 9 years old glued to the weather Channel ever since Hurricane Bob and every big storm since.
