Good that you posted Ian and gave fair warning. People can make up their own minds based on their risk tolerance and how expensive an oscilloscope they're using it with. Budget solution for budget scopes. And, this can outperform some pricey paddles.
This approach works well BECAUSE there is no protection. The signal has negligible power and would easily be impeded by any circuitry.
I did listen to viewer suggestions of placing a PVC end cap over the bare copper end cap in my design as that may offer some "protection" without compromise.

logical canuck Yeah you know...I talked it over with a “Buddy” and on further reflection, I decided it’s not cool to infantilize the audience. I rail against it when it’s being done to me...So in the interest of not being a hypocrite...Cheers Denis & Thx!

That's a good useable waveform, for a lot less money than a cop probe. Someone said try the foil and paper clip idea. I havnt, wasn't sure what he meant, I'm guessing it would be similar to your coin cop tester. Thanks Ian

Mechanic Matt Hi Matt. Yeah as you know for some COP types just about any chunk of metal may work. Should you use it? That’s another story! Cheers Pal

great video. actually that is an excellent waveform. it has great detail. you have your firing line, spark line, and dwell section. that dwell section is important in my opinion. if you use a second channel with a low amp, you will see how that dwell time section reflects your amp waveform when coil is in saturation dwell time. sometimes just by analyzing that dwell section that you were noticing ,you can see a bad coil induction. you gotta play with it since it's clearer on some coils than others.thanks for the video

Nice one! Love the make shift tool. Thanks for the mention 👍

Defo nice clean waveforms there. I think a lot depends on the coil pack itself. The toyotas are well insulated and the best wavform may not be from the top of the coil pack. If i was doing my video again, i would talk about why it is not safe as we are doing demos on known good packs. One method is to insulate the pick up tho that can affect results

dave sterl Lots to consider...Only point to this vid is it can be done. Should you? Maybe not. My absolute first video makes clear the very real possibility of a hazard. Cheers Dave

Interesting..... I would like to see both a cop probe and the hack... One next to the other...
I don't have a cop probe.. seems that's my next purchase lol..
Thanks for the vid. Never to late to learn something new.

Hi Jeremy...I had to think for a week before posting as this tool is not without risk. Read Denis’s (Logical Canuck’s) comment on this Video for a great analysis of the subject...Hope you, yer Misses and all yer youngsters are well...Cheers

The lack of a noticeable spark line is gonna hurt diagnosis vs using a capacitive clamp over the secondary.

Can you get a duration time of the high voltage--some kind of average pulse width? That is what I really need.

While the Hantek 1008C can measure period , duty cycle etc...If I understand your question I think you must be referring to firing line, spark line or dwell ? Because of the nature of the trace I don’t believe the Hantek can auto measure those parameters. You can manually use the cursor function to manually measure a captured trace. (Duration of certain characteristics)
