Great review Paul and I love the A 340 !! I suggest the reason they would be using this aircraft on this route is that is may be due for C or even a D check ! By using it on "shorter" rather than "long haul" they can control the amount of air time and "cycles" on the air frame and engines. Its a bit like if your car is due for a service in 50 miles its probably not best you do 2 weeks in France with it...go to the shops then get it serviced and away you go ! If all that makes sense !! As per a previous comment I doubt its for Crew training...these birds have been around for a long time as you pointed out !! Thanks again mate. Stay safe !!

I remember connecting in Frankfurt from Lufthansa to SAS about 10 years ago. The planes were within sight of each other but remotely parked.
We had to take a bus into the terminal, go to another fake gate, and take a bus out of the terminal to the plane. It took over an hour, not counting wait time. Never again will I fly through Frankfort.

That's probably because you don't fly them often hehe. The congestion at FRA makes the On Time rate decreasing drastically in the last few years, making me thinking twice about flying LH nowadays.
This is a pity as they have a consistent product and great lounges at FRA/MUC, but that's not enough anymore.

Work for the handling agency for Lufty in Dublin
The a340 is to accommodate tour group bookings from Germany normally purchased though TUI
Groups of 60 to sometimes 100 are common on this flight which is obviously problematic on A320 /21s so they put on the 340 as it wasnt being heavily utilised to save putting on another flight

Having flown in and out of Frankfurt many times, I second Paul's comment on the connection time. If you always want to be absolutely sure of making your next flight, give yourself at least two hours. On one occasion when flying in, I passed through passport control a full 45 minutes after touchdown, and that was without having to collect a checked-in bag.

    • @Ometecuhtli
      @Ometecuhtli 4 ปีที่แล้ว

FRA isn't close to being the worst in connections either, I almost lost my connection in CDG despite having 1:30 between flights and I had to ask people in the security line to let me through so I wouldn't miss it. No, they told me, you still have time. They didn't even stamp my passport, so on the return journey I had to procure my inbound tickets as proof of arrival to the EU. Barajas, same thing, 1:50 transfer time and almost every minute were necessary, I had to let some people through because they had even shorter connections and they're slow as molasses.

  • @MichaelN12

I gotta agree with you about the Frankfurt connection. I was connecting from Kraków to a flight to Newark and we got to the gate as the last few passengers were boarding. Nice work, Paul! I did this in its second week of operation but a fault with the A340 meant it was subbed for an A330 (still a novelty on that route, to be fair) and we arrived in Frankfurt over 3 hours late! Better than a cancellation though I suppose - keep it up!

  • @Doomster9
    @Doomster9 5 ปีที่แล้ว

FRA is the absolute worst if going through passport control onward to a connection, it's usually 1 checker for 90% of the flight and a second one will appear once the line is nearly gone. Has happened to me 3 times.

Hi Paul, I've actually asked a Lufthansa A340 captain on Instagram why they currently fly the 340 to DUB. He said it is to help the 320 fleet meet the higher passenger demand and they also use these short flights for line-checks.

You can also do London to Madrid with Iberias A340s for another short route. It operates one service every day because of the amount of cargo demand so they need to use a big plane.

Two quick stories. Only time I have flown Lufthansa was YYZ-AMS, and while not my favorite flight ever (Singapore ORD-AMS) it was a really nice flight on an A330-300 in 2011.
I flew AerLingus in 2016, and flew through Dublin's Terminal 2. Since we had kids we got waived to the front of those long lines. Best part about flying through Dublin to the US is doing customs before getting on the plane. I hate O'Hare customs so going from the plane straight to baggage was a plus. So I'll take Terminal 2's long lines for that convenience.
I'll be flying to Amsterdam again next year, with 3 people in tow. I love your trip reports, but will you ever do a video on how you go about booking flights?

Another way to experience an A340 short-haul flight is with Iberia from between Madrid and London. In fact you can go one way on the A340 and the other on a BA 777. The reason both airlines employ these aircraft is, apparently, for the extra freight capacity. Oh, and Madrid is a 'great' place for #boardingbutnotboarding!

I guess the „operational reason“ is the delay of the a320neo delivery.
Further the a340 ist to be phased out soon. As a long haul aircraft it has many flight hours, but is probably far away from the allowed „circles“ (means one take off, one landing).
Lufthansa a lot of thoughts in using aircrafts as optimal as possible, also considering cycles and flight hours.

Nice video Paul! The reason behind why they use the A340 on these routes is mainly due to training purposes. If they do a short flight then it gives time to do a full assessment in a short space of time rather than a long haul. You'll often see a lot of wide bodies around Eurppe in this case I.e. Swiss 777 at Vienna or the Iberia A340 at LHR

I have always thought that if a long haul aircraft is redundant for several hours during the day (in-between) long haul trips, why not squeeze in a short hop rotation and earn move revenue. I wander if this why IB have a daily A346 MAD-LHR rotation in between journeys from/back across to Central and South America. When I flew the IB A346 LHR-MAD it was to be turned around and form / continue MAD - SCL almost immediately.

Frankfurt did the same to us twice transitioning from intl arrival to a domestic flight using their recommended timings. Munich is much more efficient about that sort of thing.

What was the load factor of the aircraft, in your observation? You mention summer-months, which indicates to me as someone with a master's in aviation management, as "if we can fill a wide-body, lets fly a wide-body...

USB outlets are in the center console. But it's funny how a lot of reviews state that there were no USB outlets. The position of the ports seems to be really not intuitive.
And yes, the seats don't feature direct aisle access for every passenger. Other than that I'm not sure if they are really that outdated (comparing them to BA, AF on A380, etc....).

Lufthansa also operated the A340-600 from Frankfurt to Vienna during summer season and I the know the reason behind that was that they needed more seats on this route. I can imagine that's also the reason for operating a A340-300 on the Dublin to Frankfurt Route

Having had a good look throughout the video im pretty sure you were the only quad jet at DUB ( although of course I could've missed one).
Totally agree that FRA is loathsome for connections. Of course sometimes routings mean you can't avoid it but i've sworn off long ago from ever using it as a connecting hub to the point i'd rather spend a couple hundred more and connect elsewhere or fly direct. It's not only that it's often difficult to make a connection, even when leaving way more time than they themselves suggest, but that to a T staff invariably couldn't care less as it's such a common occurrence.
It's always fun to find the strange flights though and great to see you highlighting one in your usual professional way. Shame it's on their old J product. I think a lot of people are looking forward to trying out the new Luft' J class which is what of course got them their latest 5* from the corrupt ppl at Skytrax ( despite the fact said product is going on a plane that hasn't even gotten as far as getting it's airworthiness cert!)

Ugh, Frankfurt is terrible because it’s so huge, flew in from Eastern Europe, 30 minutes late because of a local delay (the airport we were in is also used for government flights, so if some VIP has to come or go, all commercial operation must wait...ugh.) Cleared security, barely had time for a bathroom stop (diaper change), and then running down the moving sidewalks because our flight to JFK was on an A340-400 and these beasts go into giant gates... only to find the plane door was closed... because the gate agent forgot to say early boarding for parents and those that need extra time had started! We were all standing there in the jetway wondering, “Should we knock? Is there a doorbell?”

I can completely agree that Frankfurt is the WORST when it comes to connections. I was flying in December 2018 from Kazakhstan to Houston with a transfer in Frankfurt, and had a 4 hour connection, but because of Frankfurt being foggy, the inbound aircraft from Frankfurt to Astana was late, and we arrived in Frankfurt 30 minutes before my flight to Houston was slated to happen, and we missed it. Good thing Lufthansa is on the same team with United, because I got a United ticket for free instead =D

For a German company, I have found Lufthansa's food to be terrible. The two times I visited their lounge, the food was cold and had been sitting far too long. The onboard food wasn't much better. The only way I would fly Lufthansa is on a free short hop ticket.

My mum flying solo missed her flight to Birmingham due to poor communication between the disabilities access team! Has had her right knee & hip replaced. Relies on a wheelchair at larger airports, was left stranded! No one came to collect her, had to be rebooked. The next flight was over 3hrs later. Flight was fine with no complaints, shame Frankfurt Airport ruined it after visiting her brother.

Flown Lufthansa, seat 1A 747-400 , business class, A350 business class ($8500 one way) and I was not impressed. FA's were not all that friendly.
Also maybe one of the reasons they have a 340 on such a short route is to burn off cycles, That 340 is 20 years old so my assumption it's close to retirement so they have cycles to burn off, remember these aircraft have more flight hours on the AF and Eng, Cycles not so much, putting it on the DUB-FRA for the summer makes sense as its short term, other reason could be A320NEO delays.
