    Just a day after my Ryanair flight from London to Dublin, it was time to call it a wrap on this trip and head home. Aer Lingus to Los Angeles was the obvious choice, and I was very much looking forward to trying this airline for the very first time.
    This is footage from EI145, A330-200 service from DUB to LAX. Aircraft registration was EI-DUO, and my seat was 33G.

    you were put downstairs in order to clear pre clearance

      Yup, exactly this. In Dublin for direct flights to the US via Aer Lingus, you get the benefit of pre-clearance so you can walk off of the plane without having to go through border control again.

      SANspotter How was the pre clearance not mentioned in the video at departures? A huge feature that very few airports have and a huge part of the airport and airline model. Is also totally logical explanation of being downstairs first? Seems like a total miss for the viewer!

    Have flown Aer Lingus many many times over the years since I was 5! Yes that is aging me!
    The one thing I always looked forward to was the Irish breakfasts when I flew from London to Cork. At that time they were free and unfortunately now you have to pay for them, but it always set the mood for my trip "home!"
    Other things I loved about flying Aer Lingus was hearing the Irish accents and Gaelic again!
    Then ultimately, flying through the clouds as we're about to land and seeing the patchwork quilt of green fields spreading out beneath me!
    God bless, happy flying and love your videos!🤗☘️

    Aer Lingus still includes a checked bag and a carry on in the economy price. All of the other airlines I looked at when I flew from the US to Dublin this fall would have been an additional $120 to check a bag. It was also really nice to do UK border control in Dublin before my connection to LHR (absolutely no line) and US Preclearance on the way back.

    Fun video! It's nice to see a good Aer Lingus economy review. Aer Lingus economy was my very first experience in an airplane - couldn't have asked for a better experience to ease the nerves of flying. Even the captain's PA announcement at the beginning of our flight helped, informing us that we would encounter some mild turbulence mid-flight but that it would be a rather "speedy" flight that night. The food is actually pretty good (dinner, coffee/tea, and a pre-landing quick bite). It was nothing over-the-top, but satisfying and tasty.

    So I flew to the US out of Dublin a couple of weeks ago, and while the basement gates are as cramped as ever, they now have an escalator up to the main gate area, from where my plane left. It was sectioned off from the rest of the airport by a glass divider. It was considerably less crowded and more pleasant.

      I think some of those 'basement' gates are overflow areas. We've been sent there for Budapest flights. There has been some development at Dublin in recent years, I believe the shuffle is to accommodate constructions.

    Great report, pleased to hear you enjoyed your journey with Aer Lingus.
    As for the A330-200 on this route, they come from a time when it was the only A330 model capable of west cost operation and Aer Lingus configured them as such; crew rests, early entertainment systems etc. These days the A330-300 is far more capable and later models delivered to Aer Lingus are regularly on the daily SFO and will be added to LAX daily from next summer.
    Also, green mood lighting does exist on Aer Lingus but for some reason it's only used at certain times and flights or for "special occasions" like St Patrick's Day.

    Dublin to Malaga during the summer is so busy Aer Lingus use an A330. It's an all Economy service but you can select a Business Class seat for €75 when booking the flight.

    Back in the day, the Aer Lingus A330-300’s were unable to make the range to LAX/SFO. Aer Lingus actually tested ETOPS across the Atlantic for Airbus on their first batch of A330’s.

    • @FBWFTW
      @FBWFTW 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scott, I actually did some digging-the initial launch weight variants of the A330-301 (Aer Lingus’ old fleet EI-SNN, EI-JFK EI-ORD et al) had a Max Takeoff Weight of 212t/467K lbs down to as low as 184t/405K lbs-not enough legs to get there. If you want to geek out a bit-you can see all the different weight variants of the A330 here and how Airbus has grown that plane from 212t MTOW up to the current 242t -300 and beyond with the Neo versions!

      SANspotter I found an article on exactly what you were talking about in the video (I’m like a squirrel trying to find a nut when it comes to avgeek stuff-pardon the multiple comments)
      “To enable operations to US West Coast the airline announced in 1998 an order for an Airbus A330-200, the aircraft EI-LAX was delivered in May 1999 and a second Airbus A330-200 order was announced to increase frequency on the route, EI-EWR arrived in May 2000.”

      correct, Airbus made the A330 as a high capacity short-haul, they couldn’t sell it, and little ol Aer Lingus requested bigger fuel tanks and tested ETOPS for long haul and hey presto, they had a viable alternative to the 747 guzzlers for transatlantic routes. fun fact - A few famous TD’s grand kids are still drinking free pints from the bribes they got from Boeing execs to buy the 747’s 50 of years ago!

    Great video! I work in the US Preclearance area and yeah it's tight alright, the reason for the basement gates as you say is because of the US preclearance as EU and US can't be in the same gate area ( us requirements that the DAA have to follow). In the summer and busy times upstairs is used because downstairs there is only 6 gates (401-406) so with the amount of flights to the US out of Dublin they need to open upstairs to accommodate the flights, hope you enjoyed Dublin Airport!!

    • @sanspotter
      @sanspotter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the info! Yes, I was able to wander upstairs and I did see several US flights departing from there - I figured the reason was because it was especially busy at that time. Glad to know I was right. 😆 Anyway, it is a beautiful airport terminal nonetheless!
