The Best-Known Jewish Lullaby: Rozhinkes mit Mandlen

On this International Holocaust Remembrance Day, as we bear the responsibility of memory, we return to those songs written in our hearts. This Yiddish lullaby, “Raisins and Almonds”, was written in 1880 for the Yiddish-language theater in Eastern Europe. I wish you a Shabbat Shalom and good memories.

This is an innocent little lullaby, and yet I was introduced to this song in War and Remembrance. I can only associate this song with a mother trying to protect her son amidst the horrors of the Holocaust. Same goes for Oyfn Pripetchik, a children's song, but thanks to Schindler's List, whenever I hear it, I just see images of the Krakow massacre.
