The report provides insights into what happened in Lebanon, Oregon, after the town voted to remove fluoride from its water supply. Here's a summary of the key points:
What Happened When Fluoride Was Removed?
      Catalyst for the Removal:
Increased water turbidity due to a nearby reservoir issue brought public attention to the water supply.
Residents, led by groups citing fluoride risks, campaigned against fluoridation using documents and studies, some of which were controversial or contradictory to mainstream science.
      Community Vote:
The debate divided the town, with some citing health concerns and government overreach as reasons to remove fluoride.
The city council ultimately held a vote, and by a slim margin, residents chose to stop fluoridating their water.
      Impact on Dental Health:
Dentists noted a higher prevalence and severity of cavities in areas without fluoridated water, comparing Lebanon to nearby towns still using fluoride.
Fluoride's established benefits for preventing tooth decay were cited by organizations like the American Dental Association (ADA).
      Arguments Against Fluoride:
Opponents expressed concerns about fluoride as a "toxic chemical" and cited studies suggesting potential neurotoxicity.
Mistrust of government and public health institutions fueled skepticism about the safety and necessity of fluoridation.
      Arguments for Fluoride:
Advocates emphasized fluoride’s 75-year history of reducing tooth decay by at least 25%.
Dental professionals argued it is safe at recommended levels (0.7 mg/L) and cost-effective for improving public health.
      Broader Implications:
The removal sparked wider discussions on water fluoridation in other towns, showing a divide between scientific consensus and public perception.
It highlighted the challenges of balancing public health recommendations with individual choice and trust in institutions.
      Conclusion:
The removal of fluoride in Lebanon revealed significant division within the community. Proponents of fluoridation emphasized its benefits in preventing cavities, while opponents cited distrust and potential risks. The outcome reflects broader debates about public health interventions, with consequences for dental health becoming evident in non-fluoridated areas.

      Nothing.
They allude to a potential increase in cavities by citing a nearby town that is partially fluoridated...but this is misinformation.
There could be confounding factors that account for that town's increased cavities...e.g. that town maybe poorer, eat more sugary foods, and has poorer personal hygiene habits. In other words, it is not an example of direct causation.
This is not to say that there could be an increase in cavities. It is to say that they gave no actual evidence of any change...because there was no change to cite.
I always drank (fluoridated) tap water in NY. Now in TX, I only drink bottled water. My teeth are none the worse for doing so.

As someone who works in healthcare, I can attest that some of the stupidest people I have ever met were nurses. One time I went to transport a patient from one hospital to another and I saw that the patient was on oxygen. Naturally, since it's my job and duty to care for the patient, I need to know all relevant medical problems, and since anything airway related is critical, it's vital that I know why the patient was on oxygen. When I asked the nurse, she angrily replied "Why do you need to know that"?
Another time I had a coworker who was in nursing school. We were transporting a patient with COPD to a nursing home from a hospital. We assisted the patient is standing and moving over to the gurney, but the effort made him out of breath. I turned up his oxygen just a little bit for a few minutes to help him catch his breath, but my coworker freaked out because the old knowledge was that if you give a COPD patient too much oxygen, they will stop breathing. I won't go into technical details as to why this happens, but the newer research shows this isn't a major concern in the field, and it certainly wouldn't be a concern in the situation with our patient.
I tried to explain this to him, but he wouldn't listen, and he even went as far as to say he would never give hi-flow oxygen to a COPD patient even if they turned blue. If you're not in medicine, it might be hard to understand how stupid of a statement that is, but a close comparison would be to say not to give a heart attack patient CPR because they pulled their pec in the gym the other day. It got to the point where we had a respiratory therapist mediate and he agreed with my side. Even after that my coworker still tried to say he was right.
Just because someone is a nurse, doesn't mean they're smart.

Denmark and Norway NEVER chose to fluoridate the water because they considered it unethical and administration of medication without authorization. Hillsboro, Oregon is a (West Coast old) small city that began as a hub for local pioneer farmers and is now a large suburb of the Portland Metro area (~2.5M pop). Hillsboro water is mostly supplied by a town water bureau and a county water bureau, but there is also a very large rural area using individual wells and there are multiple small water districts. Each of these water sources follows different water rules, so determining whether or not a person receives fluoridated water during their day is difficult to measure with certainty.

What JFK is proposing is not to get rid of it completely but for us who don't want fluoride in their water to have that choice, right now I have to buy baby water to be able to avoid it here. That begs the question, if it is so safe, why baby water doesn't have it?

In most European Countries we do not add fluoride to the water but use toothpaste with fluoride which has the same benefit for the teeth. In this way we do not contaminate our drinking water with a chemical that does not naturally occur in these quantities in water. While it is debatable if fluoride could have harmful effects, we just follow the rule "if in doubt, don't do it". Considering the large amounts of sugar consumed in the US I would rather take action against the enormous sugar consumption instead of fighting the resulting tooth problems with a chemical added to drinking water. I am quite concerned about some opinions of Mr. Kennedy but stopping fluoride addition to tap water would be my least worry.

I live in Eugene, Oregon, which has some of the cleanest tap water in the nation and has never been fluoridated. For my entire life as a child, my entire family drank water straight from the tap. We all used the exact same brand of (non-fluoridated) toothpaste and we all had the same brushing/flossing habits. I have never had a cavity. Some of my siblings have had multiple cavities. At the end of the day, no matter how clean your water is and no matter how much you brush and floss, your biology might simply mean that the level of acidity of the saliva in your mouth makes you more prone to cavities than other people. Since no one can know for sure if that applies to them until later in life, it's best to use a little fluoride toothpaste to prevent more serious damage down the road. Any potential toxicity of fluoride is far outweighed by the detrimental health effects of cavities and tooth and gum decay.

You know, there is a vast difference between pure concentrated fluoride in a tank, and a small trace amount in water, right? There is Cyanide in apple seeds, but I'm pretty sure you've swallowed a few of those in your lifetime and came out ok. Literally everywhere they stop adding fluoride, there is a documented increase in tooth decay and other dental issues. But oddly enough, there is no correlative increase in population intelligence or rational thinking. It's almost like the amount in water we use to help our teeth isn't enough to effect neurology, even when we drink it daily. Crazy, huh?

Like so many others, this debate is taking on a liberal/conservative dialectic, and once again we may be surprised to see how “conservatively” US liberals are reacting. Just because something has been widely practiced for over 70 years, this does not mean we cannot look at it again with an objective viewpoint. Again, we see the people who are “misinformed” are those making exactly this accusation against those who disagree with them. An “informed” person would be one who recognizes that most European countries and the UK have never added fluoride to their water, or have discontinued it long ago, and yet their juvenile dental health has improved over the past decades in a manner similar to that of the US. This does not discount the value of fluoride in dental pathology prevention, but strongly indicates better hygiene awareness and topical applications of fluoride in toothpaste play an equally important role.
What is undeniable is that the difference between a normal therapeutic dose (0.7ppm) and a dangerous dose (1.4ppm) recognized by all experts, is far too close to administer generally. Medicines distributed without prescription have at least a safety factor of 1:50 between a recommended dose and a dangerous dose, and any medicine that comes even close to a 1:2 ratio is to be administered under close medical supervision - probably in a hospital environment where dosage may be closely controlled.
My own initial reaction to Kennedy’s assertions was similar to other libs, “This is just conspiracy trash” but unlike so many people I am not afraid to actually look at the claims and evaluate them open-mindedly. When I realized the ratio of recommended to dangerous dosage - not disputed by fluoride advocates, I understood Kennedy is correct. This is an intolerable risk for general distribution.

There are even multiple studies that show fluoride being noticeably harmful below the 0.7 ppm in our water supply. If you don't live in a 3.5 square mile area, you have to depend on your own well to drink water and wash items-like clothes and dishes. You don't have to be a edjoomakated ijiot with multiple degrees to see that dental and medical health are lacking because some folks come to the fire station for free medical care. I don't know what state you live in, but you should drive out to a very rural area and talk to the emergency medical people in that area. It will save the inflated cost of bringing in edjoomakated ijiots to see what a six year old can see.

This is such an important point that too many people don't pay attention to. They see the studies (which are done in places where the fluoride levels are about twice or more than what is allowed in the US) and they see the care that is taken when handling the additive (which is highly concentrated) and conflate that with what causes harm.
We know that something is only toxic when it is higher than the dose needed for therapeutic results. Everything that is in our environment has limits to what is safe (including how much pure water one can safely drink). For some things, even minute amounts can be dangerous (such as lead which people don't seem to realize is *far* more dangerous than fluoride and is in the water far too often) and for others, it takes a larger amount. For instance, if you have heart disease, you may need to have digoxin to keep your heart working properly. But if you take more than the prescription says or if the dose is not properly monitored and your dose is too high, you will have toxicity.
I've read many of the studies, especially the one in JAMA Pediatrics recently that analyzes a long list of other studies on the subject. One of the things that disturbed me and was *not* addressed in any way is other things that could have been in the same water. In the US, the level is set at 0.7 mg/L. Even the articles which say fluoride is bad, say that if the level is less than 1.5 mg/L (more than *double* what the US uses), it's not a problem. But the water only is tested for fluoride. What about the lead levels in that same water (as we know that even 0.015 mg/L levels of lead are damaging to the brain)? What about the levels of PFAS in that water? And many places that have high levels of fluoride in the water (either naturally or because their government puts more into the water than would be allowed by the US) often also has high lead levels.

It's from life long indoctrination, they have cognitive dissonance because they can't allow themselves to entertain the idea that they were lied too because people like to think they are smarter than they are. The facts are it's a neurotoxin and all the studies, including government funded ones, show it is dangerous to your health and is proven to lower IQ. It is the quantity/level, and route of exposure, not necessarily the specific chemical that constitutes a risk. Ingesting too much water will cause water intoxication and can easily become lethal. Nutmeg becomes toxic at 1 to 2 tsps. Relatively modest doses of salt have been reported to cause fatality. In two children, the lethal dose was estimated to be less than 10 g of sodium (less than five teaspoons of salt) and the lethal dose was estimated to be less than 25 g sodium in four adults (less than four tablespoons of salt). Point is, just because you need PPE to handle something, doesn't exclude it from being safe in appropriate exposure levels.

Not only that, the safe amount for babies vs toddlers vs children vs adults is vastly different, and it is disproportionally more toxic the younger you are. Subsidize toothpaste and dental care before assuming putting it in the water is a one size fits all solution. That's like saying every medication should only have one dosage level, no matter what your individual health, medical conditions, other medicines you're currently on, weight, height, etc. You get the maximum dose or no dose, regardless of all other factors.....

The negative effects of low-dose fluoride exposure can include dental fluorosis, which may cause enamel discoloration in developing teeth, and potential endocrine disruption affecting thyroid function. There are also ongoing concerns about possible neurological impacts in children, though research in this area is not yet conclusive.

    • @SomaArtsAkal

Here is another answer from GPT... excess fluoride in the diet can potentially affect the thyroid gland, as fluoride ions (F⁻) may interfere with iodine uptake, which is essential for proper thyroid function. This is due to the similar chemical properties of fluoride and iodine, both of which are halogens in the same group of the periodic table.
