My wife was denied post operative care and got sepsis that caused brain damage. She's in a nursing home now. She fiddles her fingers and stutters noises when she isn't screaming like she's being murdered by a knife. She barely knows I'm there. 27 years together and it's gone. Yes, it was United Healthcare. She was taken away just before Christmas. I just had to pay the nursing home almost $2000 to keep her until the end of the month. After that, the only way to save her is to be poor to qualify for Medicaid.

@thomasdequincey5811 The manga artist Eiichiro Oda is perhaps the hardest working human being on Earth. It’s not possible for anyone to justify having a greater net worth than him (high est. 250 million dollars). In my opinion, anyone with more than that is by default the enemy of the rest of us. Though anyone with a higher net worth than a million dollars should still be taxed at a much higher rate than the rest of us.
Wrong!!!!! He did it not for himself but THE FEAR THAT HE HAS NO MONEY LEFT TO LEAVE BEHIND FOR HIS DISABLED SON and wife being as a teacher of a high school. Literally can go right now and see for yourself in Ep1 S1 😅
@words007 I've watched it, very recently, in fact. The whole idea was, the medical costs for treating his cancer were so high he was going to put his whole family in severe debt. So, he started cooking, so he could not only pay off his medical costs, but also leave a healthy amount for his wife and kids' future.
@@words007 Also wrong... Actually you both are wrong (respectfully). I get you both want to use the narrative of his healthcare and the ongoing costs to his family even after he's gone to relate it back to this story because it would be really poignant here, but... Walter's motives had nothing to do with any of this. Walter White is essentially a deconstruction of what a psychopath looks like, and if you learn a lot about psychology and abuse, perhaps even the hard way IRL, you recognize on your second or third watching of Breaking Bad (or in the case of some that I've talked to, some recognize this on even the first watching within the first season), that... He was ALWAYS a psychopath, hidden in plain sight, trying to stay adjusted to decent society, only to slowly let the mask slip over the course of the show. He was obsessed with empire building, power, and wealth, for his own sake, and nobody else's. He used his family and his cancer as an excuse for the need to gain that wealth, but... No no, dude actually just got off on feeling like a kingpin for once in his life. At multiple occasions, he could have checked out of the game with more money than his kids and even grand kids would know what to do with, only to keep going at the cost of DESTROYING AND TRAUMATIZING said family for the rest of their lives. There's multiple subtle allusions to his state of mind going WAY further back in time in the show, from the falling out he had with his old business partners, his obsession with their success after he sold his stocks in the company, the fact that he sold his stocks out of apparently jealousy over his exes' rich family... And they even make allusions once UND ONLY ONCE to perhaps the triggering moment for his entire personality... His father's destitute helplessness and his appearance of weakness just before death, followed by a fatherless life.... Walter became vapidly obsessed with the mere appearance of weakness, and was willing to run countless lives to avoid it. Walter White was a broken man long before the show ever started, he settled down and started a family because it's what society expected of him, and he wanted to fit into that society, and then pretty quickly started hating his life but quietly putting up with it. But seriously, go back and rewatch season one, the dude is brimming with toxic positivity, faking every damn interaction with even his own family with that high pitch soft voice clinically designed to hopefully put those around him at ease.... And it does NOT take him long for him to start leaning into the drug kingpin life, especially once he gets Jesse, an easy target for his abuse and manipulations. And if that's not enough for you... Walter just out and says it at the end of the show in the last episode. He tells his wife that he did it all for himself... And his family doesn't see a dollar of his last barrel of money until he FINALLY comes to terms with that monster that he is, and finally tries to atone for what he's done. And even that, he can't help but do in his violent way, from savoring threatening his old business partners' lives if they don't magically bequeath his money to his family, to demanding they don't give them a penny more because he's obsessed with it being money that HE earned, to freeing jesse by ruthlessly murdering an entire gang. The only things he shows growth on in these last moments is his willingness to admit to the monster that he is, and him finally losing any motivation for more money (he kills Jack rather than hear him out on where the rest of the money is), after learning just how meaningless money is when he was rotting away in his hideout with nothing but his barrel to keep him company... Sometimes psychopaths really do just drop the act and tell you what they're actually doing, because a piece of them actually takes some pride in it and desperately wants to brag about it... Speaking from experience there tbh, a lot of abusive psychopathic behavior I've witnessed in ex-partners crystalized for me the moment one was just straight up blunt about what they were doing to me and why they were doing it... They weirdly did me a favor by doing that, I haven't had a partner like that since because now it's like a flashing warning sign anytime I see certain behaviors in people. And rewatching Breaking Bad after that happened, suddenly I was like "How did I not see this" even within the first few episodes. And if THAT'S not enough... Even Vince Gilligan, the director of the show, talks in multiple interviews at length, about how Walter White was essentially a "how to" guide on what a psychopath is, starting from episode 1... Walter didn't do ANYTHING motivated by his family or his cancer... Those things were simply convenient excuses to finally "break bad", the one thing he fantasized about doing his entire life.

Actually peak comedy is that socialist ideology is now gaining a foothold in America, a country that gained world dominating power and wealth through economic strength, based mainly on the idea of doing the exact opposite and promoting free market capitalism. If Americans wanted to experience a society were the rich have already been eaten, they could go to Cuba. Talk to the people there and find out they're overwhelmingly unhappy with the state of things. They wish their economy could be more open. Pretty wild how bad the state of education in the US has gotten that people are now blind to even what's right in front of their noses. See also all the Venezuelan refugees. Should the US in the future become a socialist hellhole like Venzuela, and then all those socialism lovers have to flee to Argentina and Chile because they're starving, it would truly be cosmic irony.

Bad take. Sometimes young people have dumb ideas. But sometimes rich old people like Bill are completely out of touch. "It's complicated" is a good way ignore things you don't want to think about.
No. It's actually the opposite. "It's complicated" means that you're humble enough to realize you can't learn everything you need to know about something by watching a few posts on social media. It means you actually have to study something from all angles to truly get a picture of what's happening.

Bill is clearly leaning right, they are the ones who care the most for CEOs and pushed against Luigi. Let's not pretend the right knows what a complicated issue is when all they do is paint the world in black and white. I think this take is a bit out of touch. The vast majority of people know murder is wrong, it's just that the insurance dude was a symbol of injustice. People are angry, and mischaracterizing that anger as simplicity is dangerous. Telling people "you're dumb for feeling what you're feeling" is also a losing strategy, just look at how Trump exploited that anger just by acknowledging it. Bill was actually wrong. Hospitals never used to charge so much until insurance companies got involved. Insurance companies and pharmaceuticals are the ones that ultimately do set the price. Even prescription eyewear cost significantly more when you use insurance vs not using insurance.
There may be some truth to what you say but correlation is not causation. I never had any gray hair until after my children were born. I'm not sure how eyewear would be priced differently at the same provider. Where do you get glasses that charges significantly less if they don't have to bill an insurance company?
What if it’s the hospitals deciding to bill the insurance companies more to make extra profit because they know the insurance company has deeper pockets than regular people?
Actually, we had health insurance paying bills since WWII. Health insurance became tied to employment because FDR imposed price controls on wages. Healthcare prices shot up during the advent of the Great Society programs in the 1960s courtesy of LBJ, he wanted to make healthcare available to everyone (even though everyone had access at the time).
Poor Bill. He just can't stop being the old man yelling at the kids to get off his lawn. He has become more and more insular and arrogant with each passing episode.

Mahers takes are a bit of a mixed bag, perhaps simply because there are different writers. But this one really felt unusually bad... Yeah I'm one of those software developers he was talking about unfortunately. Those decisions around website and code design for other products aren't made by technical people or anyone with half a brain. They come from executives and them telling us how to do it, and we have extremely tight deadlines and get no say in any of those decisions generally even though we have way more information on how the existing infrastructure and code works in reality. Happens in every industry I've worked in unfortunately, but healthcare is the worst with the regulations around it and other corporate political crap influencing the design decisions. But yeah they wonder why they have a dumpster fire of code, because everyone that does know the code base ends up quitting due to burn out and looking for another job, or they hire contractors that are there temporarily and they don't care, and everyone just adds to the dumpster fire until it inevitably implodes due to bad design choices and nobody really understanding the code base. Honestly I've always liked this show but I can't stand the obnoxious laughing of the crowd. I can't imagine being stuck in a room with some of these people.
It's an employee, the show staffs many helpers to gin up the audience with forced laughter at every joke in both the opening monologue and new rules segments. Maher's ego is so fragile he needs to pay folks to shout-laugh after everything he says, it's so beyond cringe, especially coming on the heels of these super weak 'jokes'
@ But they didn't really. The right made DEI and trans part of the left's platform to alienate people from the left base. Not that I disagree with DEI or trans, but they are nowhere the key issues we are facing.

I'm kind of tired of the "gen z are stupid" bit. They're just young, we were all stupid, naive and idealistic when we were young. Yes that includes you Bill!

It's always good to ignore the noise of generational friction. It's just another distraction from the real issues. But it goes both directions, obviously.
If im being honest, i see a story almost everyday of a company doing some shit that should land them in jail. And yet, nothing happens to them. This is why we like luigi. Because the rich actually do things that are evil and worth jailing, but nothing happens to them. So what are we to do?
I finally convinced a doctor to prescribe an efficacious treatment. My insurance deemed it not medically necessary, the pharmacist wouldn't let me just pay for it without confirmation from the doctor. I'm only here now because I didn't give up without a fight.
If you're really in the industry, then you would know that what Bill said about hospitals determining what insurance providers pay for services is a lie. Insurance providers have always made those determinations, usually to our detriment.
bill keeps progressively losing his touch with the general public. either he is getting too old or too rich, or both. The problem with our health care is not a right or a left issue, its everybody's issue. No matter what the topic is, he is always never wrong and always against it.
he is so out of touch! Just speaking into an echo chamber. Too rich, too uneducated, too ego driven, too old, too clueless. People need to stop paying attention to him.
That's BS. There are literally laws in place where patients MUST be treated to save lives & stabilize regardless of insurance. You are definitely exaggerating for sympathy. Try again.
Smarmy “hate us cuz you ain’t us” trash take. You explained quite well how so many different aspects of everyday American life are predatory, cruel, and unjust, but then your conclusion is that young people are “stupid” for being so fed up they don’t care about a perpetrator of one of those systems being targeted? The systems of healthcare, labor exploitation, gun control etc. are so irredeemably immoral and harmful and yet nothing is getting any better on those fronts. Spare me the “understand the issue better” BS. Yet another promising topic from you that just falls into lazy, harmful, and wholly unfunny critique instead of acknowledging that the sympathy people have toward Luigi is coming from a place of lived experience and hopelessness.
what else is new? another week, another rant about young people searching for higher purpose in their lives. meanwhile, bill was selling pot when he was their age.
Life is not, and never will be, just. Improve your skills to outcompete and take from others, or live the life that your current position can self fund. All redistribution should be based on the ability to take. And, yes, revolution is a way to take and is inevitable; regardless of who pontificates about a peaceful way to avoid it. We will never evolve beyond unaliving one another; it is as human as love.
Understand that Bill Maher’s ultimate objective is ratings, not truth. He uses “ what’s wrong with the younger generations” and “ kids get off my lawn” editorials because that’s what his audience wants to hear. It doesn’t really matter if it makes any sense or not, only if it helps with ratings. I mean , are most young people, really pro killing CEOs? Of course not. Or very few. They see the suffering health insurance companies cause and see this as a comeuppance. Are most young people really pro Hamas? Nope. Hamas wants an Islamic state. The vast majority of young people want Jews and Palestinians to live in peace, either in a two state solution or a one state solution, that is secular and everyone is equal. I personally think the one state secular solution is naïve, but that doesn’t make it pro Hamas or anti semitic.

Yeah you have to realize tho that’s just how the world was back in the day. My dad is 71 and he can remember going to the southern US as a kid and seeing white and colored only bathrooms. boomers were the kids of a freaking ton of ww2 vets. Hard asses killing nazis and the Japanese, who saw many people and friends and enemy’s die and bits of human remains blown over the battlefield they fought in in battle and the horror of that. Boomers parents weren’t thinking of the intricacies of homosexuality and gender rights for example back then. First off if you were caught being gay in the military during ww2 and way after you could be discharged for it. People back then didn’t see a lot of that stuff at all, and it probably was wierd for people to see gay people in public back then because most people wouldn’t ever see it and the vast majority of people who were gay were closeted. There were serious repercussions for being openly gay back then. But in the course of bills and my pops life that’s completely changed and that’s great. You’ve got to understand if you’ve had the Internet your whole life too how much that’s changed things. Do you have any idea how people growing up back then had wrong information or people they’d trust telling them info with no way of knowing if it were right and.l verifying it and just going with it and being totally wrong for years if not decades with bad info. The internet killed that shit quick luckily so we can get facts and be able to look up what you want now with such ease and educate yourself. Boomers are a product of their time, it’s not all their fault, they didn’t choose to be born then just like neither of us got to pick when we were born. It’s a testament tho to how much change can happen in a life time tho. Theres going to be a time in your life one day as you get older and the younger generations come up that they are going to look on your generation as you look at boomers wondering why you guys did some things the way you did and why can’t you see it the right way like they do. It’s just part of being a person in todays day and age, but as long as we keep trying to improve and get better as a whole and try and have compassion and empathy and care for one another it’s going to blow your mind when you become an old person looking back at what can change and what progress can be made in one lifespan but knowing the world still won’t be perfect but inspiring the young to take the torch and try their best at making the world a better more fair equal place

Single payer health insurance could save Americans $600 billion dollars a year according to a new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The average American pays $2,497 per year in administrative costs - compared to $551 per person per year in Canada.
That might be true. It's also true that Canada vigorously deports illegal immigrants so they can't rack up medical expenses that drive higher costs for Canadian citizens.
It's important to disclose that Canada has an income tax rate of 40 percent, for starters. Canada also has socialized medicine, and their rates of death while waiting for treatment are exponential, perhaps not included in the footnotes of the Annals of Internal Medicine.
I live in Ecuador, a developing country. An MRI here is $189 dollars, and they're making a profit. In the US an MRI can cost between $400 - $12,000. @words007 I've watched it, very recently, in fact.
The whole idea was, the medical costs for treating his cancer were so high he was going to put his whole family in severe debt.
So, he started cooking, so he could not only pay off his medical costs, but also leave a healthy amount for his wife and kids' future.
Breaking Bad is a Saving Grace ripoff

@@MsReasonablepersonhow about this correlation: the pricing is far, far worse in the US than in any country with universal healthcare.
You walk into LensCrafters and pick out frames and think there isn’t a price on them?

Goes back to the executives and CEOs and upper management everytime. They don't want to put money into any of that either.

90% of healthcare costs come from 60% of Americans having chronic illnesses. Fix your diet and health, and everybody saves.
