Clance Vaasen im using 13” Zildjian K/Z Dyno Beat hi hats from the 90s. I have them flipped so the z custom is on the top and the K is on the bottom. Carter did this for some time back in the day...
Extra Heavy Z Dyno Beat on the top, Medium K top on the bottom. Zildjian sold it as K on top. With the Z Dyno Beat on top, the hi-hats are brighter, louder, and have more stick definition. Today, it's no longer available. Now they have the 13" K/Z Special, which isn't anywhere near as good as the K/Z Dyno Beat Combo. They changed the way they're making the K top, and it's just not working well. The old K had well-defined lathe grooves and different hammering. What they have now is.. I don't know how to describe it. Find videos of the 13" K/Z hats and you'll find both demonstrated in various videos, and I think you might agree that the new version isn't as good as the original. Carter stopped using the 13" K/Zs a long time ago. I don't know if it was his decision or his drum tech's or a combination of both of them deciding, but today he's using 14" A Zildjian New Beats. I don't know whether he has the heavier cymbal on top though. Judging from the sound of his hi-hats these days compared to my own 14" A Zildjian New Beats, I think he probably does.
Wow Awesome! It looks like you've made some changes to the setup as well. Is that an A Custom Flat Ride? Also, those Z custom hi-hats and 22" K Custom sounds fantastic! I would love to see a video about your AR16 and microphone choices and placement. The mix sounds great!
Amazing playing man! I was curious, how are you suppose to use the chinas on the right? They aren't stacked but they look to close together to be able to play them separately
Gabriel Guimond-Mercille they are stacked using a 6” extension. The bottom China is 22” so I’m able to use it for swells and rolls and stuff. The top Cymbal is 20” so it leaves room to strike the bottom one if I want .... check out my kit tour videos on my channel. It explains it in detail!
If you watch the interview with the drum tech, the bottom one isn’t for playing. They put it there to protect the band members on that side from the loud crashing of the cymbal. It works as a baffle.

You sir show great talent as well, however i can't expect you to remember every 3 hour solo jam Carter plays at each show. Im sure it took you many days, even weeks,listening to the same song to get as close as you did, Guess how many hours Carter spends learning his own songs. Exactly , he doesn't. :)
That’s exactly why I love Cater... he paints a beautiful individual picture each time he plays..... no two exactly alike. It’s why my wife will ask me why I have 30 versions of two step on my iPod 😂
