I may be mistaken, but I think this was shortly after Helene’s return to performing after her bout with stomach cancer. In an interview, she spoke of the “urgency” with which she now approaches her playing in public, and her desire to be “an open channel” between the composer and the listeners. This all shows on her face and in her demeanor as she plays.
Adorei! Abraços, Araci.
Her slow interpretation has grown on me, even though at first I thought it too slow. It's really quite beautiful. After all, tempo is always subjective. Just because a piece has usually been played a certain way doesn't necessarily mean that is what the composer intended.
Other recordings of this piece by Ms. Grimaud are slightly faster, and I prefer that... But Ms. Grimaud is consistent in playing from the heart and not tied to a metronome...I find her interpretations of Bach, Chopin, Rachmaninov to resonate with how I hear the music should be played. She seems to know exactly what will thrill and fascinate this jaded old musician... Bravo.
She has a strong French influence in her performance. Besides these origional works were set to paper as guidelines. I have seen even contempoary handwritten compositions that are difficult to read and interpret. I had the good fortune to speak to one composer. No pedal he said but later said yes you may use a little.I enjoy the French approach. They breathe new life into the piece. The fact she is beautiful is complementry to her delivery.
I didn't want to make an absolute claim, I just wanted to express my feelings. As regards to duration, (slow-not slow), I was not referring to an absolute measurement, but only to duration as I perceived it. To give an example, when you are relaxed and the road is free you may drive slowly and not feel to be slow, if you are in a hurry, you may drive faster and feel that you are slow.
It's a beautiful and simple prelude (simple for Bach's standards). She could've kept it that way but--a bit unfortunately--she pressured the score into becoming some sort of concert piece that, IMHO, is not.
w.t.f. dont you understand about Bach? It's deep, romantic, psycotic, just about everything that surrounds your daily life. Just listen. It'll change you son.
I'm not sure why this was uploaded. I mean, obviously Helene Grimaud is extremely attractive, but that's well understood. Why not post an entire performance rather than an excerpt? If not just to obsess on her looks, and that's kind of cheesy in my view.
This video is another mistake of Grimaud. The other is the record of Beethovens Concerto, which she is very far way of the understanding. She commited a great mistakey in respect of the Prelude, thinking that nobody is hearing, only looking at his face, which by the way, dont agree with any part of the music, in reason or the fact that she really only conclude a musical frase in the end. There are many possibilities, wich doesnt explore, many harmonies , many tension and relax inside it.
Raquel de Toledo, I’m not exactly sure what it is you’re saying. Helene Grimaud can hardly ever be accused of “making a mistake”. Her technique is universally believed to be perfect in the pieces she plays. And to suggest the she cares more about folks “seeing her face” than she does about what she is playing betrays on your part that you know very little about Helene Grimaud.
Julien Walther, Helene Grimaud is so well known because she is one of the very best pianists in the world. Just what is it that you think is ridiculous? And to use the word “egocentric” betrays your lack of knowledge and understanding of this pianist. You might want to learn a bit more about her background and experience before you casually toss those words around.

The Nikolayeva rendition of the first prelude is beautiful.
This rendition is absolutely breathtaking. Stunning..
Maravilhoso !!!!!!!!!!!
Fantástico
Unique and beautiful interpretation.
Excellent ! slow mode ! in state of trance ! Very beautifull !
excel-lent interpretació, gràcies Hélène Grimaud.

These facial expressions are killing me.

🎹
props to piano too
man she's a goddess

bellissimo questo brano
Smirk. :)
🎹
I agree with some earlier comments. I also like this pianist (a lot!), but the way she plays this piece just feels a bit too slow.
With her acting skills she can try it in Hollywood!
why just the second part?
just waohh !!!!!!! sublime !
She looks very young
E C S T A S Y
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼Fabulous interpretation ! 💎💎💎Bravooooo !!!!! greetings from Chile 😊
1.25 speed sounds like a honky tonk piano underwater

HELLO HELENE

Hélène Grimaud: God given...
Beautiful! Both of you
Ridiculous emoting--- YIKES !
💜🩷💜
Silence de la mar 🎼🎼👏👏👌👌
No está completo... precioso

What is french influence? I am a beginner piano student, and I would be grateful if you briefly explain it. Thank you. Best regards
You are.

MAGNIFIQUE....
SUBLIME MERCI MADAME
Vive Loussier
Thankyou for this tempo
más rapido y mas matizado.

As much as I admire her good looks and great playing, in this case I must agree with my fellow Air France passenger: marketing.
😃😃😃😃😃😃!!
Lindíssima edição jlz26! Adorei!

"Ce que pense, tu deviens.
Ce que tu entends, tu attires.
Ce qu'images créent. Tu es élégante bonne Patrizia
Love Grimaud but... This is not Bach.
Why does this only begin half way through???
I thought ahe was going to fall hard on the floor at the end lmao
Hmm. She really loves this piece.

Uebung macht Meister!!
Forgive my agressivity it was too much but i know and appreciate Hélène and i'm furious cause i read always the same jokes about her
Listen to Nikolayeva

lol le sketch
Aussi belle que touchante.
Ausgezeichnet.

I agree with you 100%.
Grotesques ses simagrées
Bach is NOT a romantic !!!!!
It's true, when we listen many pieces of Bach, we know that he is very different of Chopin.
And Bach has played organ and harpsichord and not piano!
🎹
Nothing that Helene Grimaud plays ever sounds “like crap”. She is too talented for that.
Too damn slow....
Don't like this. Very harsh and indifferent :(
Hogy miminden fér bele egyetlen percbe!!!! : Altitudo=mélység/magasság... Ezt is Helén képes elénk varázsolni. (Tegye, tehesse még sok-sok évig!)
etwas zu hart
@TheERICVDB Are you blind? Look at her? Why are you so agressiv?
I love this pianist, but not this interpretation: too slow, too romantic. I know, she is romantic, but in this case it is a little bit too much.
