    Thank you so much for documenting these runs. I use your vids to show people where we're going and to research or refresh my memory.
    The Blackstone is a great little river, was a great learning river for rafting. If you camp below the bridge you can find coal in the gravel bars.

      Thanks very much Andrew, I appreciate you taking the time. Yes, the Blackstone was a fun little river. It was my first time there and I quite enjoyed it, although a bit higher water might have been nice. All in all, a good day out there. Take care.

      Hey my pleasure man, thanks for checking it out. Did you ever paddle the upper Blackstone, from Blackstone Gap?

    • @kayak2hell
      @kayak2hell 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nickharland3795 Yes, there's a big rock pinch just downstream from the upper put-in (if we're thinking of the same section). We kayaked it in 2007 but there were several logjams that dissuaded us from future runs (was leading a lot of club trips at the time and trees + beginner paddlers = doom).

    • @nickharland3795
      @nickharland3795  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I've read that it is tight and technical class III up there. Definitely not a place for beginners. Thanks for the reply, take care man.

    Cool running's man. lol Nick, those river-wide diagonal ledges are sneaky. They almost beg you come on in sideways or push a little to turn you and then Whaaamm! Way to navigate through the rocks, ledges and keepers, good on you buddy.

    • @nickharland3795
      @nickharland3795  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much. It was my first time there, and I was pretty impressed. A little more water might have been nice, but still a lot of fun. Almost got stopped and swamped at one point, but otherwise stayed out of trouble. Take care BD.

      Those old Mad River ME s are a bit noisy going down the river. Great boat for white water camping. You can load them down but they will still turn on a dime with the heavy rocker

      @@nickharland3795 … my wife and I honeymooned at Chungo Creek Outfitters cabins overlooking the Blackstone and I remember thinking it would be a blast to canoe that. The wife isn’t big into river canoeing but because this is a small/er river I think I could get her to come; it’s in our favourite area of Ab. You are so blessed to have canoed much of the Eastern Slopes rivers.

      @nickharland3795  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@T410ce Yeah it was pretty friendly at this water level. I hope you can get her to go, it's a fun trip. Yep it is a great area, and I definitely plan to paddle more of these Eastern slopes rivers. Red Deer, Brazeau, James, Clearwater, Panther... so many rivers, never enough time :)

    • @nickharland3795
      @nickharland3795  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They were mostly class II rapids, with a few that could be classified as class III. Other than a couple jumbled ledges, most of the rapids were pretty straight-forward. Yeah I was out there by myself, so I definitely want to be prepared for the worst. Thanks for watching Barry, take care.

    For me, it’s been 20 years since I paddled the Blackstone. Maybe it’s time to go back. Awesome paddle. Thanks so sharing. Do you know the flow rate at the time of your paddle?

    • @nickharland3795
      @nickharland3795  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was my first time on the Blackstone, and I really enjoyed it. A little bit more water might have been nice, but still pretty good levels for canoeing. No gauge on this river, Brown Creek has the most relevant gauge nearby. It was dropping fairly quick over the last week. On July 9, Brown Creek was at 4.5 cms, a good medium flow. Hard to know exactly how many cms the Blackstone was, all I can say is it was a solid medium flow. I hope you make it back there, thanks for watching.

      Thanks very much Rick. No log jams or serious strainers in this section. Some of the fast corners had strainers, but they were all quite avoidable. It is a nice run, I hope you make it out there.
