    I can't recall seeing this many downed trees in any of your previous videos ... pretty incredible. Wow Nick, you had me ducking in my chair a couple of times ... you are one very skilled paddler. Very beautiful river (never heard of the Clearwater before), love the scenery. Looking forward to PT.2 :)

      Yeah this river is known for having logjams and many sweepers to be aware of. Otherwise it is a beautiful river... nice clean water and good fishing. It was probably the most trees I have seen on a river, and definitely got my heart racing a few times. It was tough to relax while paddling. Turned out to be a fair bit of work navigating this river, but well worth the effort. Thanks for the nice words Robbie, take care.

    Wow, gravel bars, strainers and sweepers, log jams and a pushy current...that could have gone bad so fast. But, you nailed it. Well done!

      Yes I agree ! That river must be hell in spring to carry such big logs everywhere

      Hi Ian. Yes this river definitely has it's challenges. I knew it would be a difficult trip at times, so I packed very light. It made the portages easier, and the canoe handled well with a lighter load. Thanks for taking the time.

      Yep, it would be terrifying to paddle in high water.

    A number of time we have looked at the river and wondered how bad the trees could be. Thanks for the show.

      I knew it would likely have some logjams, so I packed very light for this trip. It made the paddling and the portaging easier. I would not recommend this trip. Thank you for checking it out. I hope you are getting lots of kayak trips in.

      Yes it was definitely exciting at times. There is no shortage of downed trees in this river. Some big storms were in the area, but mostly missed me thankfully. Thanks Thorn.

  • @rialobran
    @rialobran 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That tree with the end cut off it at head height in fast water with a six foot or less gap...that was some prize needle threading to get through there. I've always known your a good paddler but some of those moves took real effort, skill and confidence in that skill. Looking forward to part two.

    • @nickharland3795
      @nickharland3795  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah there were a few spots that really got the heart racing. This was a stretch of water where I couldn't relax. I had to slow down before the corners and look as far ahead as possible. Thank you for the nice words. Take care.

    High water. Must have been historically high earlier judging from the brush piles and trees. Nice camp.

    • @nickharland3795
      @nickharland3795  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was a good flow for paddling. Roughly medium to high. High water of early June would be downright scary. Many great places to camp along this river. Thanks for watching Douglas.

    Boy some of those logjams brought back memories of my son and I nearly drowning a few years ago. You did well on this one Nick, skills and experience make a huge difference!

    • @nickharland3795

    Such beautiful country. Love getting out in this area. You are a very skilled paddler Deffinetly can see and hear some of those corners your working hard.

      Thanks very much Kevin. Yes, there are so many beautiful places in Clearwater County and David Thompson Country. Haha, yeah I was very motivated not not end up in a log pile. It was exciting and challenging, and very much worth the effort. Thanks again, take care.

    That section of the river is known for it’s logjams and other hazards. That’s what kept us away from it. That being said it is nice to actually see it. Some sections actually had me leaning and drawing with you 😉. Hopefully most will see that one needs “skill” for paddling this one for sure. Thanks for sharing.

    • @capaddler
      @capaddler 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also looks like you caught the edge of that huge hail storm that went through the area last weekend. 😮

    • @nickharland3795
      @nickharland3795  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I knew there would likely be a few logjams. I packed quite light for this trip, and it worked out very well. The portages were not too bad, and the canoe handled nice with the lighter load. It is a beautiful river, but I would not recommend this trip. The days were generally hot and sunny, but got some good storms in the evenings. Yes, caught the edge, thankfully no baseball sized hail where I was!! Thanks Priscilla.

    Great video Nick, I have fished the Clearwater for decades and had always thought it would be challanging river to caneo due to all of the log jams and they way the river branches out so much. Again great video's Nick, keep it up!

      @nickharland3795  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much. Yeah there is no shortage of downed trees and logjams on this river. Otherwise it is a beauty... nice clean water, good current and good camping all around. And good fishing from what I hear. Thanks for watching, take care.

    Ha! That's awesome. You and I did a 3 day trip at the same time. I started at the trunk road Bridge and paddled the North Sask while you were on the Clearwater. I got back to the water treatment plant at 12:00 on Aug 1

      Right on, that's so cool. I got back to the water treatment plant at 4:30 on August 1. That is a great trip on the North Saskatchewan River. Thank you for watching.

    My buddy and I did canoe trip from Caroline bridge to hwy 22 bridge. He was in back cheering and laughing having time of his life, I was in front hoping we weren’t going to die with all long jams, sweepers and strainers. Beautiful river but way to technical for me. You handled it well Nick I had so flash backs with your close calls 🍻

    • @nickharland3795
      @nickharland3795  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah definitely a lot of debris in this river. You have to be constantly looking ahead, with little time to relax. The camping was great, and the river is beautiful... but maybe not an ideal trip :) Thanks for watching and commenting.

    • @nickharland3795
      @nickharland3795  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much. If you want to get into it, go for it. I wish I had started canoeing 15 or 20 years earlier. I went on my first canoe trip when I was 32 years old, and was instantly hooked. Start on easy flat water, and work your way up in difficulty. Canoe lessons are never a bad idea. Can rent canoes at first, before buying one.
