This is the kind of thing that life memories are made of. Traveling alone through wilderness, even on the edge of civilization, is a mind expanding experience.
I couldn't agree more. Canoe tripping is such a wonderful way to experience the landscape. There aren't many things more enjoyable than travelling alone through the wilderness. Thanks very much, take care.
Hello from Drayton Valley 👋🏻😊
It's a great area for paddling. Thanks for watching.
Is the fishing still good on the McLeod? Been many years. My Dad took us camping/fishing up by Robb many times
As far as I know it's good. I'm no trout fisherman, but I've heard good things about the upper river. My only experience fishing this river is lower down near Edson, catching walleye.
i wanna canoe from the dam to rocky mountain house. do you know where i can find some info on rapids i need to be aware of? thanks
"Mark's Guide for Alberta Paddlers" is your best bet. It has good descriptions and a good distance chart. There is a new third edition in stores now. Log jams between Bighorn dam and the Hwy 734 bridge can be a problem on this trip. Otherwise, it's a great trip. Have fun!!
@nickharland3795 thanks a bunch
Floating down a river is like a ride at Disneyland but with no rules 🦦👍🏻
Yeah it's always fun to paddle down a river. No admission fee either. Thanks for checking it out.
Hey Nick, Love your videos by the way. When you say the river is 28 cm/s, is that a speed or is it like volume cm3? Just curious also how you measure that? Thanks!
Thank you very much, I appreciate it. It is a description of volume. 28 cubic meter per second. The provincial government has a website that monitors river levels and flow rates. They have gauges set up that calculate river width, depth and speed in order to determine the volume. That is where I get all my numbers.
Awesome thanks 🙏
That’s a nice stretch. Have done plenty of sections in the badlands never this part further upstream. Adding that to the 2025 itinerary! Thanks!
This was a nice day on the river. All of the large rapids are upstream of this put-in, but there is potential for some sweepers and logjams. All in all, it is a very nice section. Thanks for taking the time, take care.
just did devon to the edmonton zoo yesterday, could not have asked for a nicer fall day.
Sounds like a very nice time on the river. The autumn colors in the river valley would be wonderful to see.
Thanks for not ruining it with music.
My pleasure. Thanks for watching.
Hey Nick, love these trips, I've done a few of the same routes, but this one's a little wild for me I'm guessing lol. How do you typically arrange for vehicle drop offs when you are solo? You mentioned a bike at the end of this vid?
Thanks Jason. I'm glad to hear you are enjoying the videos, and have done some of the same trips. The Wildhay is a great trip, but you have to be very aware for log jams. For this trip I used my mountain bike to shuttle myself. It was a 60 km bike ride, and just about killed my legs :) After the trip, I had to drive back to the put-in to get my bike. For longer trips, I have used family, friends, local outfitters, and even taxi companies for shuttles. It can be a real challenge sometimes.
Haven’t done this route in years. Brings back awesome memories from my younger years. Smallboy’s to FTR was a favourite. As always, thanks for sharing.
I had been wanting to do this trip for a few years now, and it did not disappoint. Paddling and camping in the canyons was a great experience. Yeah a bit of work getting to the river, but very much worth it to start at Smallboy's. Just a wonderful trip overall. Thanks for watching, take care.
Missed this video. Yeah, lots of log jams. That sweeper was quite the one. Increased heart rate in a number of spots. I haven’t paddle this section, only a couple of the lower ones. Thanks for posting the flow rates.
My first time here, but it seemed like a good flow for canoeing. There is definitely potential for sweepers and log jams in this section, but thankfully it wasn't too terrible on this day. Thanks for watching Priscilla.
That was another great river trip from Red Deer to Sundre. I thought it would have been longer. I enjoy watching your trips. I get right into it lol Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it. This is a pretty part of Alberta. Coal Camp is a tiny community west of Sundre... it makes for a short day trip. I hope to do the trip from Sundre to Red Deer next year. That one would probably be a three day trip. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Take care.
Looks like a nice fun run Nick! Well done man!
Yeah it was a nice run with good current for the most part. I got lucky with a pretty nice day too. Possibly the last paddle of the year. Thanks, take care.
missed this one somehow, glad youtube recommended it / wow ! that must be some insane river in spring judging by all that gravel on the banks and man these mountain views! crazy waterfall chute thing in the rocks there wow/ awesome.
Yeah this was a great trip... one of my favorites. It was an experience canoeing this river from it's source. You definitely wouldn't want to go down into the slot canyon. It was intimidating even standing beside it. A powerful waterfall that can hardly even see, it goes quite deep. Thanks for watching Thorn.
i was going to mention the water looked low and you said it so yeah, getting to know this river from your videos, i though t it looked lower than normal! great paddle as always, love the mountain in the distance, and wow great mountain views at the end too./ sorry about your Mom, very nice dedication. thanks for taking us with you
Yeah it was a very mild winter with not much snow. The it was early season, but the water was lower than normal. It was a great setting for some paddling. It's one of my favorite areas in the Alberta Rockies. Thanks Thorn, I appreciate it. Take care.
Thanks for sharing, Nick. Looks like it was a great paddle!! Cheers!
It's my pleasure. It was indeed a great day on the water. Thanks, Cheers!!
Curious what model of Mad River canoe you are paddling?
This is a Mad River M.E. It's a whitewater canoe from 1988.
I am sure I have the evil black sheep of the Mad River whitewater line up, the Howler. Challenging to paddle.
Right on!! Yeah sounds like they are very unforgiving.
Do you know the cms the day you paddled this run? Take care
It was 27-28 cms on this day. Thanks, take care.
Hay Up Yonder Nick ! Wonderful Day For Slipping The Paddle In The River ! Thanks For This From Down East Friend ! ATB T God Bless
It was a wonderful day for some paddling Terry. A perfect fall day, and enough water in the river for canoeing. Take care my friend.
lovely fall day for a paddle.
It was indeed. Thanks Jim.
Is that in the area that the grizzly bear attacks occurred
That would have been a fair distance up-river from here. In or around the Banff National Park boundary I think.
Always been a fan, so enjoy your river adventures…
Thanks so much Jim.
Thanks Nick, always fun to go along with you on the river.
Thanks BD.
always a good time on the water with you! this one is a little shallower narrower and faster than most of what you canoe on, fun little river.. .
Yeah this was a fast little river, and it made for an exciting trip. Higher water would probably be scary in a canoe, haha. Thanks Thorn, take care.
Nice paddle, thanks for sharing Nick
Thanks Udo.
Thanks again for the view love this
It's my pleasure Lynne. Thank you.
Hey Nick, it’s Jamie. Can’t get into my other TH-cam account, had to create this one. Glad to see you’re getting some excellent trips in this year. Thanks for sharing and be safe out there.
Great to hear from you Jamie. I hope all is well, and you are playing lots of guitar :) I also hope you are getting some canoe trips in too. Take care man.
Such a beautiful river. How long did it take you?
Yeah it was a nice run at this lower level. Three hours maximum. I took a few breaks and never really noted my start time, but I'm sure the paddling time was less than three hours.
Another great paddle thanks for sharing .
Thanks very much Kim.
Another beautiful trip with a few tricky spots to navigate. There are places where the river spreads out into several small shallow streams and then just a minute later they all converge and turn into a substantial river. I love watching it change like that. When I saw you post this video I was half expecting a smoky sky but it looks spectacularly clear and blue. Perfect weather for a day on the river. Thanks for sharing a peaceful trip down the Red Deer.
Thanks very much Robbie. This was a nice September day, mostly sunny and not much wind. The water levels were fairly low and it made it interesting in terms of choosing the best channel. At this water level, it seemed like a very dynamic river. It was shallow, but thankfully I did not hit many rocks or bottom out. Yes, no smoke during this trip!! It had been hazy recently, but clear on this day. Thanks again, take care.
Nice run, I wish I could have joined in. Looks like a perfect trip, thank you!
Hi Greg. It was a nice run in late season flows. There is good current for most of the run, though it does slow in the second half. I got lucky with a mostly sunny day and not much wind. I hope you are having a nice September. Have you been out fishing lately?
@@nickharland3795 its excellent, thanks. Been out checking on the walleye but don't seem to be in the fall run yet. I'll let you know if I find them, you'd be welcome to join.
Sounds great!
Hey Nick, very relaxing trip. I must say I really appreciate when you tell us where you start and where your takeout point is because right away I grab my phone and I look for those locations. Thank you for another exciting video! Frank--Alberta
Yeah this is a relaxed trip compared to the sections above. It makes for a nice day trip. Documenting the rivers is my objective. I'm glad to hear that you look up the locations. Thanks Frank, I appreciate you taking the time.
Nice trip!!
Thanks for taking the time.
Hiya Nick, Hope all is well with you? I'm doing ok. Your summer canoe journeys' s must be coming to an end soon eh? Safe travels Nick. Until next time my friend...stay safe. ❤️🙏🏼
Hi Miller. Yeah everything is good here, doing well. I hope you had a nice summer too. Yes, the canoeing season is closing quick, maybe one more trip if I am lucky. Always nice to hear from you Miller, take care.
Nice run. Alberta is beautiful. I was dumb struck going down the valley in Banff from Jasper to ??? in October about 7 years ago.
Thanks very much John. Yes, the Icefields Parkway is a spectacular drive... I never tire of it. Take care.
A trip down memory lane for the majority of this trip (Forestry Trunk Road to Brazeau Dam). The gorge is an impressive part of this trip. I recall a small waterfall (2-3m) surrounded by big boulders near the end of the gorge section. A friend and I went over it in our Zodiac boat. We were very grateful for not flipping over. Shortly thereafter the gradient and river slowed down as terrain opened up. Did you portage over the little waterfall? Beautiful river. A little tricky with sweepers and shallow water in the braided channels when we went (late September, 1987).
This was a trip I had wanted to do for a few years now, and it did not disappoint. The gorge section was really exciting, definitely the highlight of the trip. I focused most of the video on this part, and did not film much of the braided sections. I didn't notice any waterfall or large ledge. I found that the river eased up further down the canyon section, and there was certainly nothing to portage around. The landslide was the only major obstacle in the latter part of the canyon. Maybe the river has changed? I'm not sure, but I didn't encounter any waterfalls. Thanks for the comment Nestor. It's always nice to hear from someone who has paddled the same rivers. Take care.
@nickharland3795 Interesting. I can only conclude that it's changed, perhaps due to the slippage of the bank. It was probably the most memorable part of our trip, no doubt due to how rapidly we came up on it and how there was no way to avoid it (by the time that we understood what was going on, we were committed to going over it). Shortly after there was an old hunting camp on the north bank (complete with a sun-bleached elk skull nailed to a tree) and the river took a couple of lazy turns over deep pools. A very memorable trip, for sure. Watching your video definitely makes me want to do it one more time. Thanks again!
When I first read your original comment, I thought, maybe the landslide covered it, haha. The odds of that make it kind of hard to believe, but it's also hard to believe that big boulders and a small waterfall would change drastically or disappear in 37 years. Either way, there is nothing there now. I hope you get the trip in sometime, best of luck Nestor.
Like paddling in a washing machine. Must have been tiring.
It was a good day on the water... and definitely a workout. Thanks for watching Patricia.
That's awesome. Looks like you had a pretty good summer!
It was a good summer indeed. The weather was all over the place, but I tried to make the most of it. I hope you had a good summer as well Les. Thanks, take care.
Wow. Worked in that area in 1984.
It's a beautiful area for sure. Thanks for watching.
Good job 👏
Thank you very much!
Looks nice, I was just inquiring about a Nahanni trip for 2026
It was a nice trip, overall it was very enjoyable. Good luck with your Nahanni trip... that would be amazing!!
Did that trip with a buddy many years ago , dumped the canoe two hours in, didn't lose anything, camera was useless, but strip to remember !
Yeah the first parts of the trip are quite exciting. It was a lot of fun paddling in the canyon. Definitely a trip to remember. Thanks for watching.
Great video
Thanks very much.
The water actually isnt the low. You would have a very hard time doing this stretch from mid August on.
A little more water would have been nice on this trip, but yeah, late August would likely be too shallow.
Kudos for keeping the wipeout in there. When I saw that current coming in from the left and you were leaning right, I knew you were going swimming. Good video.
Thanks John. Yeah it was a folly of mistakes. A bad read to start, leading me to an area I should have avoided. Once there, I handled the wave all wrong. A well deserved swim :) It added to an already exciting trip!!
Looking to do a day trip and wanting to end in rocky. Wondering where would be a good place to put in.
Horburg Provincial Recreaction Area would be the best place to start. There is a small campground there, and good access to the river. It's about 34 km to Rocky from there. There are a number of class II rapids, but they are avoidable.
Thank you, sir. You confirmed my thoughts.
Hey Nick.Hope all is well. Did you pack your canoe all the way up there ?
Hey Shawn, I'm doing good. Hope all is well with you too. Yeah this was another failed attempt to get to the glacier... didn't make it very far. Still, a wonderful place to paddle a canoe.
HI...Im a noob....where did you get those maps?
Hello Garrett. For this trip I was just using a Jasper National Park map, not a canoeing map. Your best bet for canoeing maps is Go-trekkers or Map Town. They seem to have the best and largest selection on their website. Otherwise you can find maps in most sport/outdoors stores.
Great video!! Just wondering how you use your vehicle for transportation of your canoe when travelling down the river, is there a simpler way than using two vehicles ?
For day trips like this one, I use my mountain bike to shuttle myself. I drive to the start, and stash my canoe/gear. Then drive to the finish, park the truck and ride my bike back to my canoe. Paddle the river, load canoe on truck, then drive back to the start to get my bike. I don't know that it's simpler than two vehicles , but it works for solo trips less than 60 km. I think using two vehicles really is the only way sometimes... depending on the trip logistics. Thanks for watching, take care.
