    It was interesting how the EA games for philosophers stone were entirely different for each platform. GB: turn based rpg. GBA: 2d action, PC/playstation: 3d action, but with entirely unique levels and assets. They didn't make 1 game and port it for 4 platforms, they made 4 entirely unique games.
    somehow I don't think we'd see any company do that today...

      I believe thay trend went on up until the fourth installment where all the games were basically the same for the fourth movie. The prisoner of Azkaban rpg was something else... And totally different from the console versions (which were starting to be similar). Really good canes out of this. The play station line for the first two have got to be classics.

    I hope more of Nintendo’s art surfaces at some point. Their interpretation looks and sounds somewhat similar to how I pictured it in my head. I started reading the books around the time that the third one was released in the USA, sometime in 1999. There were no movies or games back then, and I didn’t have regular access to the internet (thus, no fan art or accounts of how other folks saw it), so all I really had to go on were the illustrations in the Scholastic versions (rather than the covers on those UK originals). Purists scoff at them now, but that was Harry Potter to me. I pictured it less as this somewhat serious, dark world with kids running the show... and more like a cartoon with an irreverent, sarcastic, and slightly dark sense of humor, where the kids are along for a crazy ride and just kind of happen to save the day at the end, and the whole thing looks like an Impressionist painting. I hadn’t played it yet, but I guess I saw it as “Earthbound” meets “The Nightmare Before Christmas”, with a little extra 90s attitude thrown in.

    • @Gadget-Walkmen
      @Gadget-Walkmen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL What? Harry Potter is EXACTLY that as it does have a dark sense of humor and the kids DO save the day at the end as well as the kids going on a crazy ride of adventure and mystery as they try to solve what's happening. That's what happens in every harry potter story in the books/movies. And the kids aren't "running the show" in the harry potter franchise, they're just students there who are the MAIN characters of the story they're in. And The Harry Potter world, even based on the books, isn't "somewhat" serious, it IS serious and the "dark world" IS what makes Harry Potter what it is as well as brining it together with the whimsical magical vibes to give it even more character which truly makes the series! THAT'S harry potter, as the whole franchise, especially the movies, feels like a dark halloween story theme magical story that progress-fully gets more serious as the characters age.
      And "purists" don't "scoff" at the Scholastic Harry Potter covers, they're great iconic covers of the harry potter series and key events that has happened, illustrated by Mare GrandPré, which look fantastic as iconic harry potter covers TO THIS DAY which people still praise so I have no idea where yo come from saying this nonsense that "purists scoff at them now" lol no they don't. They're still widely praised and loved to this day! But I'm starting to prefer the new covers for the harry potter by Kazu Kibuishi which looks BEYOND gorgeous and more "modern" than previous covers but they all around look good.
      And how you saw it as a kid just seemed 90s as it gets. It's not bad but the way how the movies interpreted and brought alive the harry potter world better than anyone could ever dream to which all looks fantastic with it's gorgeous art direction and aesthetics from character design, sound design, set design, special effect, and gorgeous music bringing harry potter to complete life! !

      @@Gadget-Walkmen You’ve misinterpreted me on several points here.
      I know that the students save the day in the end. I never said that they didn’t. What I was saying is that when I read the books, it almost seemed like they did it by accident (hence “kind of happen to save the day”). In those first few books, they were often (if not mostly) reacting to their circumstances rather than acting according to a plan (“running the show”; they’re much more proactive in the films than I pictured them). They had strategies, sure, but they also often just found themselves in the right place at the right time. How many times did they just randomly stumble on somebody doing something suspicious, for example, or discover some vital clue when they weren’t even looking for one? It happened a lot.
      Perhaps things have changed since I was really into this series, but I HAVE heard people poo-poo the Scholastic editions in the past, and it had nothing to do with the art. I never bagged on the covers or even suggested that others did, the “them” I was referring to were the Scholastic editions themselves (though I have heard a few complaints about the covers as well). Basically, some people didn’t like the very minor tweaks that Scholastic made to the text itself to make it a bit easier for American kids to understand (mostly altered British vs American spelling and terminology). I really don’t think replacing “boot” with “trunk” is a monumental difference that’s worth complaining about, though I do think changing the Philosopher’s Stone to the Sorcerer’s Stone was a bit condescending and unnecessary. But then, I wasn’t the one making a big deal about it. It was mostly Brits who thought that these cosmetic alterations somehow cheapened the series or made it too American.
      You also seem to be under the impression that I didn’t like the films or thought they were a bad adaptation. I never said that. They’re fantastic. I’m just saying that I pictured them a bit differently, and it would have been interesting to see this canceled game because it sounds pretty similar to how I saw this world. My interpretation is too nineties? Maybe, but I only mentioned those nineties IPs to give a frame of reference for the tone as I saw it. I definitely didn’t see Harry putting his hat on backwards or dropping references to Nicktoons if that’s what you thought. Again, I was talking about the dark and irreverent elements of them. The way these kids often got pushed around by the adults and left to fend for themselves against a bunch of weird and/or dangerous creatures and scenarios is similar to “EarthBound”. The gothic and fantasy elements, as well as the lack of concern for anyone’s safety, is not unlike TNBC. The extra nineties attitude I was talking about is not the dopey caricature of a stereotype that you see in popular kids’ media of the time, but the nihilistic edge that permeated what our older cousins and siblings were consuming. The teachers would just casually tell the students “stay away from this shit, or it will kill you”, and not really do much to keep them away from whatever it was. It was like they knew the kids wouldn’t stay away from it no matter what they did, so they couldn’t be bothered to try to stop them. “None of it matters, so just enjoy the ride”, that seemed to be an overarching theme.

    • @Gadget-Walkmen
      @Gadget-Walkmen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TBustah Alright, I understand you ALOT more now.
      I haven't read the first book, even tho I have it in my room right now, and it's been YEARS seen I read the books when I was in middle school. I've watched the films a million times as I love the film adaption but of course it's easier to WATCH a movie than it is to read it all the way through.
      But what you're saying about "stumpling" onto a clue is just a harmless plot device in order for the plot to move forward as the kids aren't supposed to be doing any of that investigation stuff to begin with. The kids DO come up with plans like the Polyjuice potion infiltration plan in chamber of secrets and Hermione researching in the library for info on the Basilisk or the Sorcerer's Stone. I would say it's a good combination of BOTH problem solving and being at the right place at the right time to find the answers or a vital clue as plot devices ARE needed in stories like this. As they ARE just kids in a magical world who aren't even supposed to do any of that stuff but do it anyways to save the day as main characters in mystery style story telling.
      You can do BOTH in detective style storytelling as even fantastic shows like Breaking Bad has Hank finding out who Heisenberg is by simply reading a book in Walter's house during a Potty Break to figure out what WW stands for.
      See what I mean. Conveniences CAN happen naturally.
      And I never heard ANYONE talk bad or down to the scholastic covers AT ALL, that's the first time I heard of that. I know the UK covers are different from the america version but never in my life have I heard anyone say anything bad about the covers because they ARE iconic. So it's unfortunate that you heard that for the people as they are BADLY mistaken.
      The change of Philosopher's stone to Sorcerer's Stone IS eyebrow rising mainly after you KNOW that Philosopher's stone is the how it's widely know throughout the history of alchemy and in OTHER media like Fullmetal Alchemist so it IS weird that they changed but I gotten used to name change and it overall fits and WORKS for the story.
      And yeah you're description does come off as 90s as when you described it with your terms, it sounded like a nickelodeon show like "ahh real monsters" vibe that you were saying here with the not so serious but dark funny world you were saying here.
      It's not a bad at all but it give me 90s vibes when you were describing it, that's all.

    Imagine if Nintendo did get the rights to make Harry Potter on the N64? They could have hired Rare to make it, it could have been released in 2000/2001 and it could have been another N64 classic. I remember when I saw Chamber of Secrets on the GameCube for the first time and thinking "Philosopher's Stone must be on N64". Imagine my disappointment when it didn't exist.

      The first three games were pretty alright. Philosopher's Stone was... okay. Not the greatest, but it sort of placed the stepping stones for what a Harry Potter game could be like. Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban were absolutely fantastic, though. Goblet of Fire, though... I don't even know how in the world it went sooooo wrong. I guess it was just because EA was starting their downward spiral into complete and total mediocrity. Order of the Phoenix was... okay... but then Half-Blood Prince and both Deathly Hallows games happened... effectively killing the franchise entirely, when it comes to video games. Not counting the terrible mobile game. Those games are probably why no other spinoffs exist. We'd probably have more Quidditch games and possibly a game based off of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. We might even have one based off of The Cursed Child.

    - Rare's Potter game would have been successful

    I have conflicted feelings on this. On the one hand, it's kind of a shame that we couldn't have gotten some cool adaptations of the games that I'm sure would've been of great quality, given Nintendo's track record.
    But on the other, it's hard not to think that this really wouldn't have worked out, even if Nintendo had gotten the rights. I feel like a lot of the appeal of making the Harry Potter games for them was painted by the wide range of fun scenarios the first few books contained that mostly focused on adventures in Hogwarts. But starting with the fifth book, the possibilities for what they could've done might've started to dwindle, what with the increased focus on drama and a more linear narrative. I mean, hell, one of the main themes of the series is how Hogwarts slowly becomes a less and less friendly place as the books go on.
    That, combined with them having wanted to present the series in a more shounen-esque manner, makes it seem like it was going to be built upon a shaky foundation with little by way of a firm direction.

    ? To me, this is a moot topic. Harry Potter: Years 1, 2, Quidditch World Cup, 3 and 4 all came out on Nintendo Gamecube, and in the months prior to the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2, beat all 5 in a row, starting with Year 1. Plus, Harry Potter: Years 5, 6, 7-1 & 7-2 came out on Wii. I'm just thankful that the HP videogame series was completed in its' entirety at all. They so compliment my Ultimate Edition DVD sets of the movies, and that really something to be thankful for. On the other hand, it would have been a travesty if Harry Potter went the way of the Narnia videogame series.

    A Nintendo made Harry Potter game? Well, the first couple of games are pretty Zelda-like. But imagine what Nintendo could have done with it... most licensed games tend to suck while the first few Harry Potter games were pretty alright. I would have loved to see a version of Philosopher's Stone for the N64 made by Nintendo.

    I'm actually glad it didn't happen after playing Harry Potter on PS1 and growing up with an N64 too. I like the franchise. But it would have been a poor platform choice. Especially given the N64 controller.

    "Over 700 pages of reading to catch up on, in only a few days!" The narrator says as if doing so is difficult. Like I can read a 400 page book in like 3-5 hours by myself, 700 pages with an entire team shouldn't even take 2 days lmfao

    There was a harry potter game for gamecube. Chamber of Secrets. Also a Quiddich game. So nintendo eventually got what they wanted, it just wasn't exclusive and not on the N64. Funny because Nintendo was always seen as the family oriented game console and Harry potter was seen as family oriented as well. Surprised they couldn't come to an agreement.

    What do you mean "failed?" That's clearly the Nintendo Dreamcast port of the original Super Mario Bros. two game called Harry Potter and the Fucking Wizard.
