Even two-digit Interstates are east-west and odd ones are north-south, with the biggest ones ending in 0 or 5. Interstate 35 runs all the way from the Canadian border near Thunder Bay through Minneapolis, Kansas City, Dallas, and San Antonio to the Mexican border and a Mexican highway (I think 85) continues it to Mexico CIty.
Mile markers are by state, so there aren't giant numbers on them like there are in Russia. I think the highest are around 800. They begin at the southern or western end of the state. 478 is larger than most US states. I think the largest in New York on the New York State Thruway are around 400. And exit numbers (in most states) follow the mile markers, and are marked on the map at each exit if you zoom in enough.
The green "Business loop" signs are roads off an interstate with the same designation that go toward a city center.

Thanks for the info. Interstate 35 sounds like an epic roadtrip, hopefully one I might try sometime, would love to see more of the USA for real instead of virtually!

@@Cleophas-tl7ic Along I-35 you will find many semi tractor trucks. Near Duluth there will be many iron ore trucks and rail cars, In Iowa and Missouri corn fields, in Missouri and Kansas wheat fields, in Oklahoma and Texas ranch and oil fields. At least 4 Presidential libraries, Truman, LBJ, and both Bush. The Alamo and Dealy Plaza are just a few blocks off the freeway.

Blue highway signs are interstate highways. I-35 runs from Duluth Minnesota to Laredo Texas. It splits into East and West I-35 in both twin cities, Dallas and Fort Worth and Minneapolis and Saint Paul.
Highway Marker 477 should had you looking at Texas because no other state with I-35 is large enough to have over 400 miles. of a single interstate.
380 on the advertising sign is referencing US route 380
Interstate Highways odd numbers run north to south, even numbers run east to west. mile marker zero is at the southernmost point of the freeway in that state, often the state line, or the westernmost point in the state.
As for US route highways indicated by a shield, odd numbers still go north to south and even numbers go east to west.
Here are the major differences, low number interstate highways are numbered from west to east or south to north.
You would find Interstate 4 in southern Florida, and Interstate 95 along the Atlantic coast. You would find Interstate 94 near the Canadian border and Interstate 5 along the Pacific coast.
US route highways are numbered the opposite. US 101 is along the Pacific coast and US 1 is along the Atlantic coast. US 2 is along the Canadian border, and US 90 is along the Mexican border.
Three digit numbers mean different things. For Interstates, an odd first number indicates a spur or branch, an even number indicates a bypass loop. For US routes, a third digit like 180, 280, or 380 indicates a parallel US highway near US 80.
Numbers for State highways have no trends to help. But their shapes might help depending upon the state. In Pennsylvania, the shape is a keystone. In Washington the shape is a bust of George Washington. In Texas farm and ranch roads have a map of Texas on them. Not every state is so kind, you will find nay squares, rectangles, and circles indicating state highways on road signs.
Another hint that works for Louisiana, French street names.

another thing to mention about the local road system in the US (non interstate and non US hwy routes, state funded and operated instead of federal ) they can vary by state. so for example in texas they have FM roads (farm to market roads) which are essentially like the UK minor road system (C, U or D roads). every state has these types of roads but with different designations, iowa also uses the FM designation (the only other state to do so). In Missouri these minor roads are double digit alphabetical posted roads (eg "AA" or "BB" ect) Louisana uses the A,B,C designations for these roads.
these minor differences can help you in geoguesser especially in areas where you have no other knowledge about.

As a Texan, when I saw you zoom in on 35 near the Great Lakes trying to find 380, I was like, "Oh boy. This could take a while." haha

Not sure how well you know state flags, but you passed a big clue in the Texas flag, which is pretty distinct.

ahh, missed that! it's one of the flags I would have recognised if I'd have noticed it!
