He was an idiot. She truly loved him but love onesided can only go so far. Loved this drama. She was a great Empress. She didn't want it. It was forced on her. On top of everything she did for him he tried to erase her from history. This was supposedly based on real characters. The real Empress was never erased but lived like am Empress in history and he was forgotten.
He was never in doubt of how much she loved him, As a matter of fact, he used that love to his advantage numerous times from placing her in the cold palace and compromising her on numerous occasions. His version of love is toxic and one-sided it and by one-sided, I mean only in regards to himself.

This is the sad story. At the end Ruyi had a broken heart coz definitely love has no place in the ancient Chinese royal history. Her fault was she fell in love deeply with the emperor while emperor although he also probably loved her he couldn't sacrifice his throne for following only his loved one. He should act like emperor expected to act.. Though he kept his love deeply buried inside till he died alone of old age.
He had Yuhu. He could have used her investigation skills more than believing the lies/rumors. True, he couldn't give himself completely to Ruyi, but he didn't even try. He thought more with little Hongli than using his brain. He frequently undermined Ruyi's authority in the harem. It makes more sense that he favored Jia, because she was from an important family, but Ling got away with a lot more than she should have. I would have immediately been suspicious of the entire Ling Yunche affair, simply because he had ties to more than one of his women. As soon as I learned of his ties to Ling, I would have interviewed him regarding their relationship and put parameters in place to protect them ALL against rumors, including the rule that Ling Yunche is not permitted to visit either palace alone, as well as Jia's(due to that one incident, and that would have caused me to launch a second investigation regarding the matter) and that if either woman insists, he is to alert me of each incident as soon as he is able.

I'm glad he finally told her what was wrong, he's been dreaming of his late father who died around the same age as him & he's worried he'll be the same. So he drank to cope with his fears & because he believed it would make him stronger (thus living longer). Sometimes men would rather deal with their problems themselves than share with others, because they don't know any other way to do it. He just didn't realize how it could hurt them both by not telling her what was wrong, but hearing she was FINALLY pregnant snapped him back to what's important. I just wish he could've stayed away from Consort Ling, but by the time he saw how evil she was.....it was too late.

The Europeans were plagued with incest and genetic mutations, but I've not really heard much about genetic disfigurements when it comes to empires that utilized the harrem system such as the Chinese and Ottomans.

He was a cruel, heartless, self-centered, self-indulgent tyrant. There was nothing I liked about him, not even from the start. Ruyi never wanted to go into the palace in the first place, but she loved him and gave him what he wanted instead. She would be ruthlessly disappointed at almost every turn. He never had sincerity with any of his dozens of concubines only a lust for more and more sex, booze, and if there was rock-n-roll, it was heavy metal!

She despised the fact that Ling Yunche was loyal to Ruyi, but she had only herself to blame for that because she used him to climb into the Emperor's bed. Once she showed Ling Yunche Her true nature he treated her accordingly.

This was a great drama, but - the emperor was a butt, through & through. I couldn't stand him & still have a hard time separating the actor from this role.
Love Ruyi, very beautiful and elegant, feel sad for her for everything she went through and the emperor did not even appreciate her at all. Hated the consort and she was not even attractive and acted like a spoiled little brat.
