in Betawi culture (Jakarta) we have 3 musical instruments that are the same as this because of the acculturation of Chinese culture in the past but a little different because at the ends we use coconut shells and we call them Tehyan, Kongahyan and Sukong ❤️

Thank you for your videos...I got a very cheap Erhu years ago, and could never get it to play. I'm thinking about trying again (w/ a one that's a little bit nicer), and your videos will be very helpful!

This was sooo helpful. Although my Erhu looks so different (it’s old one and has brass tuning string entry for the strings and wooden tuning handle) also back of the box is hollow and open… is it problem?

Thank you ! I got a erhu a few years ago and gave up on learning it, but took it out last week and the rosin was dry and falling off the bow as I tried to play. What should I do? Do I need to remove the old dry rosin first somehow, before applying new rosin ? THANK YOU, YOU ARE WONDERFUL !
@@EightTonesMusic thank you ! I will do that. I meant that I had not taken the erhu out of the case for 2 years, and the rosin on the bow was dry and falling off . So I did not know if I should apply new rosin before doing something else. Thank you, I will just add fresh rosin. Thank you very much for your videos !
Dear Eight tones. What is your recommended rosin for erhu ? Between Pirastro Schwarz and Oliv/Evah Pirazzi, which one is better ?

There are pieces that are transposed from violin to the Erhu
As a violinist i am just interested of looking at an erhu
3:10 - I noticed that with a brand new rosin from the kit, the rosin is shiny and hard - like a glass surface. And I found that the rosin won't do anything at all if it remains a smooth glassy surface. What I needed to do was to use something like a metal file to rough-up the surface a lot, so that the surface becomes quite rough - with lots of powder on the surface. Once the rosin surface becomes rough enough, it is only from that point onward where rubbing the erhu hair on the rosin block will become effective. Otherwise, I think with a brand new rosin with glassy surface, the rosin won't do anything no matter how long we take to rub the horse hair.
It really depends on what type of Rosin you are using. I have never used China Rosin before (those that usually comes free with purchase of Erhu), if you are using that kind of Rosin, then maybe yes...the Rosin doesn't dust immediately. I have also seen good ones that are difficult to apply onto the bow but I have never found myself doing that before. Most Pirastro rosins don't have that issue.
@@EightTonesMusic Thanks ETM! A moment ago, I searched for pirastro rosin, and the new ones also has a hard glassy surface as well. I genuinely don't think that sliding brand new bow hair over that new pirastro rosin is going to do anything. It will definitely need to be roughed up by a metal file or something before there's even a chance for rosin powder to come off the brand new rosin, even for pirastro rosin. Some online sites reckon that new horse hair is 'rough' enough to grab rosin off a brand new glassy surface, but there are also many sites that align with my observations, where rubbing brand new rosin on the glassy hard surface doesn't do much or anything at all. I am going to purchase a pirastro rosin and try it out on new horse hair though. Thanks again!

Just a question I got my erhu it come with resin but is it supposed to be rock hard like hard candy ?
Yes, it is. Just rub it onto your bow hair and dust will appear.
I didn't get the fine tuner things. Or the Rosin things. So it's killing my bow. Also did not get the damper grooves.
You can live without Fine Tuners, but Rosin is must-have
