  • This video only shows the first 8-9 mile of the drive out of White Pocket
I had a day off from training for the G2G Ultra Stage Race and I was camping off House Rock Road near 89A under the Vermilion Cliffs I thought I would take a drive to White Pocket. I have seen some amazing pictures of the place and wanted to see it. It was an amazing place the rock formations are just incredible.
I think the ideal way to visit it would be to make the trip there in the afternoon and camp overnight. Then there would be time to enjoy the evening light, some astrophotography and the morning light. There will definitely be a return trip.
I was originally planning on leaving early so could get there before sunrise.
But I read some thing on the internet and watched a few TH-cam videos and was a little nervous about the sand. Some of the information indicated that it was all deep sand. But I thought Id give it a try, I could always turn around. It was a 24 mile drive from where I was camping. The first 14.5 miles were down a bumpy gravel road that varies in severity. The last 9.5 miles are on sandy trail.
When I went in August of 2024 the sand was only deep for short stretches, but the ruts were deep. There were areas of compacted sand and sandstone high point that made the trip easier. Unfortunately the video doesn’t really show how deep or soft the sand was in some points. It would be nice to go with a 2nd vehicle in case someone got stuck. There are various routes to get to White Pocket. I followed the route in the BLM brochure (www.blm.gov/vi.... I think the other routes have deeper sand.
I was driving a 2500 GMC 4WD with Goodyear AllTerrain Tires.
