Christian's reaction was very much in line with a young man experiencing his first love, with all the dramatic highs and lows that come with it. Does that excuse him? No, but Satine chose to forgive him and still love him and in the end that's what matters. And in the end, Satine was able to spend the last of her life with a man who truly loved her.
Yes, the medleys were lots of fun, but I love laughing at the Like a Virgin part - and Come What May is one of the most romantic songs ever.

Also, did you watch and react to that yet? Wasn’t it horrible how even though the Phantom’s character arc came to a good conclusion at the end of the Phantom of the Opera, Webber undid part of the Phantom’s arc, made Raoul a drunken entirely different personality than in the original story . . . I hope if you have already watched that that you noticed those things. 😌

I was way too young for it but I remember watching Moulin Rouge when I was 10 shortly after it came out on DVD and loved watching it all the time during that period - Ewan McGregor in this movie was probably one of my first big crushes when I was growing up (it blew my mind at the time seeing Obi-Wan singing amazingly and since then I tend to swoon if an actor I like tends to be a good singer too 🥰)… about 2 years ago, I was lucky enough to go to my first convention in my area where Ewan was a guest and I got to do a photo op with him and my inner 10yo self was screaming the entire time - for anyone interested, it was a very quick interaction but yes, he was such a sweet person and utterly gorgeous irl 😍

the "jealous man" scene is such an overused trope but its played so beautifully in this movie with Ewan choosing to approach it in an almost childlike way, being sheepish and apologetic because he was warned and knows he`s wrong to ask. His eyes dart around avoiding direct eye contact as he`s ashamed of the request and its so endearing. Paired so beautifully with Nicole remaining the stoic adult in the room, but her expression collapses as soon as her face is hidden from his sight. Its such a blink and you`ll miss it sweet little scene. Quite different from the "ultimatum", "picking a fight" or "putting their foot down" approach this trope usually takes in most movies, cause the reality is he just wants to be reassured

yes it is played in such a way, and it would almost be uncharacteristic of his character to not be concerned. I mean she passed out in his arms...but there really is no good way out of it because it would be against his heart to not do anything, but yet she is trying so hard to hold it together for him and he makes her crack.🥺 I think the character of christian is so infatuated with idea of love that he doesn't know how to properly express his love. It is very much so a story of their weakness's lining up and that is how they "fall in love'. I mean anyone who goes through something traumatizing together... he is also the best she has seen, she didn't believe she deserved better, because her job trained her to believe she wasn't enough for a different life.

Yeah, I think she breezed over or forgot about the part when Satine told Christian she was just using him for his writing ability, and that their whole relationship was a lie. I do remember Hannah saying she didn't feel like Satine's lie was believable, but that's *her* pov. In the movie though, Christian believes it entirely. Sure, he acted really shitty, but it's a very human response to someone, whom you believed you shared real love with, to betray you like that. It's not a perfect response, which makes it believable in a movie that's very fantastical.
I think sometimes people react to these things with just their emotions (maybe a bit of projection?), without actually analyzing the sequence of events against the context of the plot.

@@jhmi7877okay but if the things you say when you’re hurt are that awful and sexist and cruel along with being physical then that means you do feel those things inside. Him believing she beguiled and used him doesn’t excuse his actions. If he had called her a liar, a user, heartless, things like that, it would have been totally understandable. But calling her a whore and chasing her down to pay her is showing that he always disrespected her and her job.

I looooooove this movie so much, and am so happy you did a reaction to it. The brilliant thing about the movie is that the romance is portrayed so intense and so good that you forgot the beginning where Christian says 'the woman I love is dead', so that when the death scene comes, you get the emotions and the rollercoaster feeling. Everyone singing sounds amazing, but Ewan's version of 'Your Song' is still the best one I've hear, including Elton's original - you know I'm right, don't fight me on this.

I try and look at it like I do my childhood favorite musical, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, as a product of its moment in time.
Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor’s version of David Bowie’s Heroes, is perfection.

    • @circabooks4549
      @circabooks4549 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +103

for sure. tbh even in today's light (though definitely it would have been written differently if made now) Christian is way harsh but she also gaslit him saying their love was /all fake/ and ghosted him. He doesn't know what to believe. He can't trust his memories or beliefs. Plus, he's not privy to the information we have as the audience. He's young, naive, and sheltered as well as a starry-eyed idealist. He doesn't really understand the seriousness of Satine's life or the power of the Duke; a privilege but one that also makes him vulnerable in this situation. He doesn't understand why their love isn't conquering their hardships. So in that way, his heart isn't just broken, he's losing his faith and experiencing a paradigm shift too.
also love heroes in this, it's so perfect as like a bohemian sentiment that falling in love is a heroic act

I think it may have been overlooked that she told him she didn’t love him anymore and that she chooses his arch rival, that’s why he was so hurt and angry and that’s also why she needed to do a grand gesture to prove that she actually does love him. I look at like flipping the genders to remove that from the equation. It would be like if he had told her that he chooses someone else and that their love was fake and not real. Just how I see it, they truly love each other and were hurt and hurt people hurt people even when they love them deep down.

If you haven't and went only by Hannah's response I can understand why you feel this way. As someone who is a ***survivor*** of domestic abuse, and has watched this movie a million times, I can assure you he is just reciting the lines he wrote for the play. Is he angry? Yes. Is he channeling his anger through those lines? Also yes. Does that make it abusive? Depends. I don't think so. He's not a misogynistic asshole. I he didn't think she owed him her love. He was hurt. He was reciting the lines he wrote for that play. That is all. Yet, again I ask: Have you seen this film? Do you know the context? Do you remember him saying that he'd write those very lines into the play? It happens during the montage of "Come What May." "Come What May" is a lovely song, but its not lovely enough to cover up an entire plot point.

    • @rachelr4126
      @rachelr4126 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +28

Honestly though. I had to stop and roll my eyes at Hannah completely flipping on Christian like that. Like... Ok, Satine making him believe that she'd been lying to him and using him the entire time, breaking his heart and making him feel completely worthless, probably making him doubt himself and question all his future relationships if the truth hadn't come out, is completely fine and chill, but when he reacts like someone who feels betrayed and heartbroken he's suddenly complete trash. And like.. yes, i understand why Satine did it, i don't blame her for doing it, but I feel like so often women are allowed to totally destroy men and it's not seen as an issue, but if a man reacts at all it's disgusting.
I really wish people would stop to flip the genders for a minute before making judgements.

    • @JaakuSan
      @JaakuSan 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

@@RoseCentaur1916 I don't think Christian is an abuser (not enough data for there to be a pattern of behavior) but he is a giant asshole and he does deserve a lot criticism for his actions, even if he was hurt. For one, even if those lines are in the play, and she knew that, they are being said out of context, out of scene, by someone who is not the actor and not supposed to be here. He could have approached her at another time to express his hurt. Instead, he cornered her to yell at her while she's in the middle of something important, chased her and tried to physically keep her from running away, then publicly humiliated her using something that was important to both of them and could fuck over everyone in that play if it failed because he thinks his feelings trump everything.
For two, they went from Satine having a hysterical breakdown on Christian about how she couldn't sleep with the Duke and the Duke knows about her real feelings and making plans to get the fuck away to her coming to him stone faced and saying I choose the man who terrified and coerced me over you less than 48 hours later. It does not take a genius to look at this scenario and go oh something is wrong here and one or both of us is in trouble. It does take someone incredibly self-absorbed and shallow to take that entire interaction at face value because it hurts his feelings.
For three, swapping the genders (as OP suggested) means shit. If Satine is a largely penniless man being pressured into sex work to save the life of the woman he loves and the livelihoods of everyone else he cares about, his position would be just as bad, his actions just as understandable, and Christians response would not be any less terrible for coming from a woman instead.
Satine didn't need a big gesture to prove she loved Christian. Her selling herself and trying to scare him away to save his life WAS her big gesture. Christian is the one who fell at every test of their relationship and then threw a public tantrum like the Duke when things didn't go his way. He is not wrong for feeling hurt (even if I think he's an idiot for believing any of that for any stretch of time) but he is 100% wrong in how he dealt with that hurt.

The day starts with the love of his life "sleeping with someone else" (granted it didn't happen, but that's where his mind was that morning), then she runs to him and they're going to run away, but then she comes BACK and says "Psych! never mind. I'm staying with the Duke".... Yeah, he's a little bit out of his mind and in my opinion his outburst is understandable. Everyone has a breaking point. No, speaking in accusatory and hateful ways to someone you claim to love is NOT something to aspire to, but neither is giving into someone against your better judgement, dating someone with a significantly lower maturity level, or LYING to and ABANDONING them regardless of the circumstances. Sateen is not an innocent victim, she made some poor decisions herself. They hurt EACH OTHER. Excusing women from accountability doesn't protect or empower them.
    Also a quote:
"For many of us in India, it was a matter of pride that the country was being represented in a way that had nothing to do with slums and poverty. Even during my most recent re-watch, I guffawed at the mix of Indian ingredients thrown in to flavor the film, but I didn’t hate it. I found it comforting. Nostalgia played a part in that, but part of the appeal of the film is how far removed it feels from reality. So, it’s understandable that young Bohemians in Montmartre, France, would cobble together a flamboyant idea of the country; just as it is believable that an Australian filmmaker would be taken in by the glitz and glamour of an Indian film and use it as inspiration for his next project. After all, Moulin Rouge! is a fantasy and India is part of that fantasy." - Mohita Mohan
Moulin Rouge throws a hyper-dramatic and colorful light on EVERY nationality, personality, occupation, and archetype it includes. Was there a single French person in the main cast? Were prostitutes accurately portrayed? Were bohemian beliefs and behaviors "appropriated" by non-bohemian actors? Was Toulouse being played by John Leguizamo disrespectful to actors/people with dwarfism? It's a goofy remake of a movie and book released in the 1950's. Holding it to the "woke" standards of today isn't reasonable.

I disagree so much, but I love you. I love your reactions. I don't think Christian is a jerk, I think he was hurt and angry and lashed out after she broke his heart. That doesn't necessarily justify his reaction, but I think it definitely explains a bit. It was a very human reaction. She didn't lie to him because of the Duke, but because she is dying. He loved her, but all in all he is a flawed character. He's jealous, and she knew she could use that against him to try and save him. Her singing was telling him it was all a lie. I admit my favorite character has to be Zeidler, or Zeigler I can never remember. His song is absolutely heartbreaking. And he cares for Satine, yes he's using her for his business, but he is so broken to know she's dying.

I guess maybe I'm a pushover, but the bit right before the stage door opens, and he's begging to understand, for her to tell him she doesn't love him, just wrecks me every time. And then the spotlight is on him, and he delivers his monolog (obviously heartbroken, fabulous acting from Ewan!) which, by the way, is foreshadowed earlier in the movie when they're rehearsing with Toulouse, right down to the "thank you for curing me of my ridiculous obsession with love." Why is Christian's behavior all red flags, but Satine gets to absolutely wreck him and no one cares? Just because we know she's doing it to save his life? He doesn't know that! I think this movie is brilliant, and I really don't get how people can't have a little compassion for *both* Satine and Christian.

Coming from a woman's perspective, if I had just been devastating by the man I loved I would have a very similar reaction towards him that Christian had towards Satine. Honestly, if he hadn't reacted the way he did then Satine would not have sang their song and Christian would have gone on believing that she really didn't love him, she would have died and he would have never learned the truth.

Apparently we just want to view things through a lens of the woman is never wrong, but she lied to him-not that he knew-and told him that their love was fake and that she was going to be with the bad guy, so his response is a pretty rational one tbh. He also said the line that they had written out for this part in the play to begin with, so his anger and sadness just made that line much more emotional. Lashing out at someone who hurt you is not an irrational or abusive response. If he had done it repeatedly or gaslit her, that would be a different story, but she is the one who gaslit him.

Art imitates life... or vice versa. Christian's hurtful words during the play were the words from the play. He had written the end of the story, then ended up living them himself. It's a bit conflicting to decide if he himself felt that way or was simply destined to that end by fate.

Could you react to Dreamcatchers newest album VillianS
    Album description:
Dreamcatcher returns 6 months after wrapping up the Apocalypse Era.
The second installment of their parallel world series, VersuS, is about the diversity of ways to reach your goals and respond to temptation.
The title track of VillainS, the first album in the series, OOTD is short for "Outfit Of The Day", which means fashion of the day. It's a big part of the "me" identity, showing the narcissism of Villain's strong convictions, and transparent greed.
The album also includes 'Rising' to showcase Dreamcatcher's rock sound and strong convictions
'Shatter' about the longing for freedom from being turned to stone by Medusa
'We Are Young' with a message of hope that we can accomplish anything while we are young.

Please react to dreamcatchers album VillianS
    Description:
Title track: OOTD, your Outfit Of The Day also serves as an expression of who you are today. If you're a confident person, you're unlikely to wear your outfit of the day for anyone else's taste. In this song, confidence borders on narcissism, and it's driven by a stubborn but firm conviction. The song is in the Pop punk genre, and it relies heavily on the instrumental and vocal effects used in Punk rock to convey this unconventional and subversive confidence.
B-side: Rising this song recalls Dreamcatcher's journey over the years, while also conveying a strong message of conviction that with unbreakable willpower, they will do well in the future. It is a metal rock song with a fast tempo and an intense sound that seems to move forward without stopping.
B-side: Shatter, it represents the "self" that has been deprived of its freedom and is being turned to stone by Medusa. It suggests that the oppressed self is as good as dead, and that if someone breaks it, it will disappear or be liberated. Based on the narrative, the song highlights the lyrics of someone who would rather ask the birds to take them up to the sky, followed by the the 'self' turning to stone in despair and finally not being able to speak.
B-side: We Are Young, To everyone who cares about the future, right now. A message of hope that we are young and can achieve anything. This is a progressive house track with an emotional melody and cool synths that reinforce the message of hope.

It always makes me laugh how modern-age thinking is applied to films and stories like this. Yes, Christian is now what we would consider a red flag - something I totally agree with, by the way. I'd run a mile from him long before he chases her down to throw money at her. Buuuuuut it's an operatic drama. We've watched sopranos stab themselves for far less. I mean, Eric practically grooms Christine in Phantom of the Opera from an early age but that's glossed over too. It's not reality nor a reflection on real life. Everything is hyper dramatic. Dude is invested in his feelings for his first real girlfriend, he doesn't understand the very adult world he's walked into, he was confused as to why she breaking up with him even though it's clear that she still loves him not hours beforehand. He's allowed to be upset in this film. But only in this film. LOL

Does that make it ok, absolutely not, but I also think it’s far to easy to judge someone else’s emotional reaction, especially when you empathize with the other party. We’ve all said and did things we are ashamed of in the heat of the moment. Unfortunately, it’s part of humanity and we learn and grow and usually get better at communicating with time. I also don’t agree that he wasn’t the right person to write the story, I think she would be happy with how he wrote it. But that’s just me. We all watch and respond to things through the lense of our experiences, so I understand that the way I saw things might not be how others saw them and that’s ok.

I think this is the movie was my re-discovery of Nicole Kidman…years after Far and Away. The soundtrack has always been a fav of mine and on playlists to this day. Movie itself..eh.

I love Ewan McGregor in this. He's just incredible. His is my favourite singing voice. Just love how you just feel everything when he sings, the emotion behind it. I also love that his Scottish accent slips out slightly in Elephant Love Medley when he sings "No I won't" 😊❤

Yes! Not only it is a fantastic show, but Season 3 and its musical theme is perfect for a good TV/song reaction mix. “Look For The Light” is a genuine masterpiece outside of the show.

I'm so glad you rewatched it!!! I LOVE this movie, Ewan and Nicole killed it! Also definitely not excusing Christians actions but he did say hes never been in love before at the beginning of the movie, so maybe thats why he is so rude to Satine. Also this is a hot take but I don't think the musical on Broadway is anyway near as good as the original movie. The movie just had a special quality that only the early 2000s can encapsulate lol (also the fact that the musical got rid of Come What May reprise that Nicole sings to convince Ewan to come back, honestly I just have beef with the musical lol)

I’ve seen this movie approximately 127,498.2 times, very much anticipating the scene, and still mirrored Hannah, putting my hand over my mouth at “I’ve paid my whore”. I’m GAGGED literally every time.
But then I start it over and love him again, idk. 😅

Your review was great until you started talking about the jealously of the character Christians reactions and the ending. First video I saw of yours and sadly wont return if you're going to pretend to know what jealously can do to a man. We react very differently and having used this movie as an emotional crutch after having my heart crushed by a girl back in the early 2000s it just comes off as a bad take to me. Not saying a man should physically grab and chase down a women no no. But the emtions and how we have to deal with them and react to them is not usually ice cream and the couch haha. The story is Christians story about finding love in a place where love is given by the coin and pulling satine from that world into his. As the worlds collide and come to a point of chaos and emotion, love prevails above all else even through death, loss, and sadness, a mans love for his princess never fades. I respect your take on it but just disagree and wanted to respond as this movie has deeper meaning and sentimental value than most will ever know.

I love your reactions... What I don't think you are getting is that Christian thinks she choose money over love and made a fool out of him, so of course he is pissed, but he reacts like a child would... i get that it is a red flag, but in this context is not rooted in misoginy is rooted in innosence on how the world works

If it makes you feel better, he probably doesn't live much longer. She died of tuberculosis which is HIGHLY contagious. So, considering she was swapping spit for weeks to months with Christian, and considering he's a poor musician in 1900 France, it's all but certain he'd be on the one way train to the cemetery right after her.

Why is no one talking about Nicole Kidman's performance in this? Ewan's voice is stronger, yes, but Nicole Kidman's performance is what makes this movie.
Agreed, tho. Satine deserved better. ❤

I’m sorry but your attitude about this being her job doesn’t fit the story. This isn’t her job, it’s the only life she has ever known and was never something she chose. In fact that’s why she is trying to get into real acting so she can stop sleeping with men for money. She hates it. And now that she has experienced actual love she hates it even more.

So, not that this justifies Christian's charactor, but because he is the one telling the story he is also charaterizing himself and his actions (like when he was so cruel to Satine). This is also why I think everything is so fantastical because Christian is the narrotor and he was overwhelmed and in love etc.

i think it was that whole "you broke my heart that i must say this to get myself to hate you, but i still love you" style of movie that was super big around that time period. i remember watching that when iw as a preteen and loooooved it! loved the songs, had the soundtrack, watched it a lot lol, def red flags looking at it now, but that's the fun of show biz, it's all a story, not reality :) love ya! can't wait for the next video ^.^
