Tomek, you sound just like me!! Lol do you drive on the Autobahn? I drive 130-150mph on my way to work... On a 65mph highway lol. I would go faster but it cuts out at 150mph on my 17 Camaro RS. It sucks the limit is set so low because the revs are only around 4000-4500 RPMs out of available 7k and it drives very planted to the road at that speed cause I would only go as fast as I feel safe. It sucks when it's raining cause then I only feel safe going 60-65 and under...I wish it was AWD.

Dansyoutube It would be much slower (don't know if your car is NA or turbo though). Dougs car would go a lot faster if it was at sea level, but the salt flats are over 4,000 feet above sea level. And the V8V is naturally aspirated so it loses a lot of performance at that altitude

@@traininggrounds9450 That is the only way to do it. Hope you upload some videos of you dialing in some sick cars.
@@justinjohnson1766 Yeah right, with all the money I have. Plus, I'm being honest with what I'd probably do and so I don't expect a long life doing that. Some other commenters here told how that salt can be very tricky and you don't know if there is an undulation anywhere that might flip your car at a certain speed. So the more you speed, the greater your chances of flipping. And I'd probably flip unless I got lucky and if I got lucky I'd think that was awesome and try something worse and sooner or later I imagine I'd be dead somewhere in a crumpled tin can. So its probably good I don't have any money. Haha

Middle of no where ? Not true I’ve been to the salt flats in Utah a fair amount in my life. There between Eagle mountain, Utah and Wendover, Utah. And if you have Verizon you’ll have full coverage the entire time. There’s also a lot of people that shoot rabbits by the salt flats below the mountains.
It’s really not the middle of no where, however the salt does create a mirror effect and will duplicate mountains and you’ll drive to them they will disappear that’s why meany people get lost it’s also kind of creepy when that happens. You can also find a ton of arrow heads left over from the native Americans that use to hunt around the salt flats called the Utes which is why Utah is called Utah that means people of the mountains in Ute.
You’re also able to see the old Air Force training Center in wendover,Utah where they trained the pilots that dropped the nuclear bomb over japan in WW2. There’s also caves out there that have native Indians remains in them, and there’s skin walker ranch in that area will just look up Skin walker ranch it’s rather creepy as well don’t get lost and have fun if you go there!

I don't understand what you were freaking out over. I've driven 140mph on the Florida turnpike. There's nothing around you for dozens of miles, why not just keep your foot down until you hit 170 or so? What are you worried about, accidentally going back in time or something?
If you have never walked on that surface, hear the sounds that are made on the salt flats in a car at speed, or been going that speed into the wide open with no lines or or anything to aid in giving you perspective you won't understand.
I have done 150mph on a freeway and 130mph(rental car) on the flats, one is nothing like the other. If you ever get the opportunity do it only way I can describe is like being on another planet.
I don't think insurance would cover totaling the Aston on Bonneville
There's nothing to hit, how are you gonna total it?
That's funny because the most I've gone on the Florida turnpike was around 160mph when I was back in highschool, but then again I was younger and more reckless
Sure, I agree there is nothing to hit. There are sone questions to ask about suspension. If a car is going that fast hits a deep groove then what is going to happen to the car? Loose control and flip. This is why he is nervous.....not being a pussy.....being careful.
I first saw the bonneville salt flats from this video and fell in love, tomorrow I get to experience it for the first time. Thank you Doug
Doug the type of guy to watch a whole movie just for one part
I can tell you from personal experience that driving on the Salt Flats at high speed is much scarier than on the Autobahn. The reason is the salt surface is loose enough to break traction in any car with sufficient power. When the car gets up to speed, very often it begins "waltzing" back and forth on the loose surface. You have to be mindful of making small corrections and the whiteness of the surface doesn't give you much contrast to see little ruts. Even when the track has been recently scraped, it is not pavement smooth. If you start to "lose" it, it is hard to get the car back in line because once the tires start sliding sideways, the salt piles up on one side of the tires, creating a hump they have to go over in order to straighten out. A slide can easily become a rollover as the tires will start to dig in. Most cars cannot get up to the same speed on the salt as they can on pavement because of less traction and yes, I have driven on the Autobahn at about 150 mph in the 1960's. At the Salt Flats, I ran a 1968 Dodge Charger RT hemi in 1970 @ 142 mph, top speed was limited by wheelspin, no rear wing (would have helped). It felt weird having to feather the throttle at 140+!
Still more Safe than eastern europena autobahn
Was out there yesterday...The salt was just about perfect... and no wind. BUT, 150+ is still something that you need to take seriously.
Well put. Driving on the salt is not like an everyday drive in any respect. And it is definitely weird how the lack of color contrast kind of messes with your orientation, even if you're just going in a straight line.
Arthur White Yes, good keeping in mind that if anything had happened, he'd be a good walk away from help, if he could walk afterward! Depending on where he entered the flats, he could be quite a distance from help.
True.. when I was out there a couple of months ago, the conditions were perfect and no one was there early in the AM. I had some support with me and I was able to get 3 back to back 150+ runs in within a couple of miles of the entrance point.... video/GPS/etc.. could not have asked for a more perfect day.
RRRRRUUUUUSSSSSTTTT
aaaallllummmmiiiinnniiiuuummmm
aluminum* you fucking idiot
Gareth Technically the spelling aluminum came before aluminium
Karter Of course it didn't, it's the English language. Aluminium was discovered by a danish guy who named in aluminium not aluminum.
Karter and Bartinater they then OFFICIALLY changed it back to aluminum. However, many European people still call it aluminium, as it sounds nicer, and as an American I agree. The thing is when you called it aluminium here people thing your a smart ass.
That cool piano music at the end was great! Maybe I should go sometime and experience the salt?!
I stopped there on my way back to WV from Sacramento, CA, having flown out, bought a truck, and was driving it home. Excellent trip. Anyway, I was definitely not going to be able to not stop and check out Bonneville if I was going to drive right past it. Imagine my chagrin to find it all under a few inches of water... Still a cool experience, and the flats underwater is even more surreal than it usually is, like an endless mirror stretching all the way to the horizon. Pretty crazy.
"Come on buddy, come on pal!"

Don't scoff unless you've done it.
If the vibrations in his wheels had locked onto a resonant frequency and caused him to lose control, he could lay out there for days until he died of thirst. His dessicated beef-jerky body would be found months later when the next Speed Rally was doing their pre event grooming.
I might have pussied out at 144 mph, too.
Finally an intellectual
@mark bender you can clearly see there is only one person with him.
Everyone thinks the Salt Flats is easy to drive on. It isn’t. But the statement that you can’t see ahead of you at 145 is just hogwash lol. It may seem that way but not true. In 2016 Dave Davidson of Vintage Hot Rod drove his blown fuel hi boy roadster around a small piece of steel at over 250 mph and was able to tell us exactly where it was within 50 feet ... there’s actually video of it on TH-cam, not too hard to Google it. I worked out there from 2010 through 2018 as a roving patrol on course 1. But it’s tricky enough to drive on when conditions are good. He was smart to get out of it because once the front tires lift from the ‘slop’ it’s all over and would have spun if he was lucky. If he wasn’t lucky he could have wadded it up in a ball. Discretion is the better part of valor.
Fin Jan I went 181 on a 2003 Yamaha YZF-R1. Being a car reviewer and wussing out at 145 in a car is pathetic.
@@DPRX99 every asshole thinks driving on the salt flats is easy.

You wouldn't know shit from Shinola if you were buffing the floor son - just go check in with some of my 'chump pals' over at Jalopnik like Dan W, head of impound at Speedweek or some of the other fools who have set records at BONNEVILLE
I've spent the 3rd week of August (~September) watching my dad, then racing, then working at BONNEVILLE for almost 50 years -
Here's the thing son, wide street tires generate their own lift on surface moisture starting around 140 for an improperly equipped street car, while wings don't typically start working until about 180.
In my MANY YEARS working as a course steward, most cars spin around 150 and up and typically on the wettest part of the course (about the 1-1/4 Mile mark where the underground stream crosses the course).
So don't talk shit son, post a better video, or better yet come to Speedweek and show us how to go fast

Take a couple of water tank trucks out there.
Hook up a couple of 2 gpm hoses,
Set them up a by the edge of the flats by the exit, and charge $20 for 5 minutes of water to clean your car off.
You could get fancy, and get some 1 inch perforated hoses so cars could drive over them, and clean the underbelly.
It is crazy that there isn't a good "do it yourself" car wash close by,... I had drive to Toole yesterday to get to the first one.
When I got stuck on the flats it took over 45 min with high pressure spray point blank to get the mud off (it dries like concrete). The salt comes off easier but still tough. There's a car wash close by on the NV side FYI. :D
