    You will not find a better product anywhere! I love my Pens Plus finish and it makes incredibly beautiful pens. This is a MUST have for those wanting to have the absolute best finish.

    Picked up a bottle of pens plus about 2 weeks ago. I’m absolutely thrilled with the results, especially because I don’t care for CA as a finish…from the application to the feel of the finished surface. I’m excited to try it on bowls. Great video, thanks.

    An additional coat of wax is optional. The applied wax layer is a little thicker than the wax applied by Pens Plus and can provide an easily restored surface coat. Since the wax coat doesn't require as much heat as a coat of Pens Plus (to melt and redistribute the wax and shellac) there is less chance of disturbing the base finish. Some projects, like a pizza cutter handle, razor handle or ice cream scoop would benefit from the additional protection. Aside from the very significant cost of the product, Shellawax is based on a linseed oil formulation (which darkens with time) and uses chemical emulsifiers to keep the wax in solution. I didn't want the VOCs or the residual haze in the finish. That's why I developed the microaggregation method for make very small wax particles.

    Thanks for the video. I just purchased some pens plus so I guess you would be the man to tell me how to use it. Thanks again! Aaron Meredith.

    Thanks for the video! I heard about you from Jason at north woods. I am just going to start making pens. And I wanted a good finish for it. So I decided to use your products. Luckily I can just swing by woodcraft and pick it up. Thank you for your video!

    Why would you use a wax on top of your pens plus? How does this compare to shellawax ? Thanks

    Do any/all of your finishes resist the alcohol in hand sanitizer? I make pens for mostly nurses and doctors who use sanitizer dozens of times per shift. I'm not a fan of the CA glue finishes, but can't find anything else that is suitable for the application.

    Doesn't the paper towel have a lower grit than 5000? It seems when you "wash" with walnut oils using the towel you would scratch the surface after going to 5000/10000. I enjoyed the video and your introduction to the Microcrystal wax.

    Thank you. What grit sand paper are you using?

    • @TheDoctorswoodshop
      @TheDoctorswoodshop  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      For pens I sand up to 1000 grit with sanding lubricant, higher for cocobolo, Pacific Yew or other very dense woods.

    What lathe speed when applying the Pens Plus?

    • @TheDoctorswoodshop
      @TheDoctorswoodshop  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Speed is good with Pens Plus, at least 1500 rpm. Speed isn't as important as friction. You need to feel the heat through the towel.

    Hi
    I use pens plus and I really like the finish results , Example I use it on Honduras wood pen blanks and it shines like glass from the first coat to the 4th coat but when it cures it goes to a satin look . What can I do to keep the glass like finish

    • @michaelmeredith721
      @michaelmeredith721 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Four coats is too many. Two or three is enough. Each coat melts the one before and everything (shellac and wax) redistributes. A fourth coat could be applied but it must be polished with a lot of heat.

    • @MattIannacci
      @MattIannacci 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      But it looks like in the video you did at least 4 coats? I have the same problem - love the finish when the pen is on the lathe, but as soon as I touch it to take it off (even after waiting 20 minutes), it ends up taking my prints and the finish goes all matte... It's been disappointing, as I was expecting a much higher gloss.

    • @michaelmeredith721
      @michaelmeredith721 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      When the finish fades like that, the most common cause is insufficient friction polishing. The first coats are not set before additional coats are added. Picking up your prints argues for that. What looks like more than four coats is most likely spot touching up.

      Thx and when you put on the Fluid from the white bottle, what where you using to rub the liquid into the blank with.

    • @michaelmeredith721
      @michaelmeredith721 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's been so long, I had to watch the video again. The "white bottle" was Walnut Finishing Oil that I use as a sanding lubricant. I apply the oil to the sandpaper and and sand as usual. A sanding lubricant will give you a much better surface for a given grit of sandpaper.

      That company is gone apparently Don Ward had an article in the June 2016 More Woodturning about between center pen turning. He cited Bear Tooth Woods (www.beartoothwoods.com) as a source of these busings. Also he pointed your that standard bushings can be drilled out to have a 60 degree cone to math the 60 degree drive and live centers using a collet chuck and drill centers.

      I found in the products section of the website. He told in video, but not clear me too, but looking at the description of the products found below one
      DOC-106
      Walnut Finishing Oil
      Speeds sanding, provides a safe oil finish
