- THAT EXHAUST THO! This week Caleb talks to us about his super clean Subaru SVX. The modifications aren't too extreme this time, but they definitely freshen up the look of this odd ball Subie. The SVX is powered by the EG33 flat six engine. Which provides a solid 230hp and 228 lb ft of torque. The engine makes a very unique sound, and with the exhaust modifications Caleb has done, this thing sounds like no other car we've ever heard. It's hard to explain, and I'm sure the video can't to it the justice it deserves. From a distance, it literally sounds like two different cars battling it out. Sometimes you get a hint of a street bike sound. It's and unique as the car it belongs to, and we are really happy Caleb took the time to come out and show us his amazing ride.

I see u a Subaru mech ok so as always 4 us mech people ask us questions all the time but this is my first Subaru it's a h6 3.0 150k on it the last owner pulled off the interstate 75 south in South of Atlanta about 20 miles from airport with this 2004 outback wagon awd 35th with the h6 ok what he was thinking heads gone or something so I paid 650 dollars 4 it inside clean and motors is ok but later found the burning oil leaking valve covers next to the fire wall area and was looking up the part at my store AutoZone night job lol but and ordered the ones on the utube guy had been using to fix that one and was told if I was going to do a valve covers do motor mounts it maybe not cost more money and if so what else can I do that might not cost more to do as the mech not me on this round fixes the valve covers my next thing is tune up and later coils and tranny service But now I have valve covers , motor mounts , spark plugs ,airfilters and oil filter and ebay 2 inch lift kit and struts so when I get new tires but don't know how much it cost to do a valve covers and motor mounts on this and then cost on tune up cost with out coils at this point and I got all the parts but coils is order in thing 4 this car so just waiting to see cost on this so far lol but need help don't know shit on this car but. It is a cheap daily driver car I need to keep 4 3years as I start over again in life at 40 lol

Hardest part I had with my wrx 5 speed swap was the bracket to weld the pedals in place I kept snapping welds on the clutch pedal side

In terms of sound, it has a 1jz VVTi type feel to me. Although I think this is more raw. I love it.

Damn sounds so good. One of my dream cars. Instantly liked it when I saw it on the Gran Turismo video game and scrambled to get it, since it wasn´t even for sale on the game´s Subaru dealership. It was only available on the "used" Subaru section.

@@riwolf8246 he swapped the gearbox from the STI in the SVX. The SVX uses a 3.3L Flat 6, no flat 4s around here.

My favorite subie ever! I remember buying one in 2009 for 500$..I stright piped it and regretted it LOL way too loud but it was sexy as hell. Too bad it wasnt in good condition..I remember people staring..it's truly unique and amazing.. I think I'll buy one again someday

Know that they are not easy to work on, the awd trans is a slug and the transfer case is utilized is weak, some people have figured out how to 5speed swap them from the wrx, makes them so much more fun. I have a friend who I work with on his a lot. They are also expensive as hell so be warned. If you do build one. Modding the engine is also possible, but you have to do rods postions and a whole new crank for boost, cause over 400 these things explode pretty easy lol. Get the black top ones, they handle modding easier too.

got lucky and got one of these from my dads shops because they didn't pay what they owed us , so now we have the title , as of now im driving a mercury sable , can wait to switch over after i mod this SVX out , i will definitely post videos from start to finish , and dedicated a whole channel too it , not sure what itll be callled yet , but hope the youtbe community can help me out with some choices and what not to do !!! thanks for posting this !!!

Their engine is a freak in strength too I talked in person to andy forrest he still uses the stock exhaust manifold with turbos on it, they had a custom one made but the factory one made more power somehow

I just bought a SVX 97 with less than 90k miles. Has the check engine light but I will work on it. So cool!!
I do too have one in black 97 with less than 80k miles check engine light. Possible one of the coils small clicking noice every now and then but runs great other than that. I only paid $250 I got so lucky!!

Few years ago i found a few for about 2k, now theres one in my area for 18. cheapest running one has 150k miles on it and is still 8k.
Keep searching. I got one this February fit 900. Had a leaking heater core though.
I should mention that it was a base model with 85k miles and neglected exterior
Most expensive ones here in Germany were around 6.5k, that’s where they start now. The more expensive ones sometimes cost as much as an ER33 GTST but the price trends going somewhat down luckily
I got one completely rust free and has a new transmission for 1800. Interior needs work and it has 215k but it drives like new
R32 owners should be honored if someone misstook their car for an SVX! I have a r32 gts-t currently and I'm actually looking to get a nice low millage rhd SVX next. I love everything about them and had a white/black 92 SVX a decade or so ago. I miss it!
I love those cars! This one is gorgeous! Would the BRZ manual fit under one of these? That was the only thing about the SVX that I never liked, I’ve only ever seen them with slush boxes.
The EG33 engine used in the SVX is based on the EJ (effectively an EJ22 with two more cylinders). As such, the manual transmissions that bolt up to the EG33 are ones found behind any EJ engine (Impreza/Forester/Legacy/Outback). Because the BRZ uses an FA engine instead of an EJ, the transmission is likely different and won't work.
That said, there are plenty of options for transmissions, 5- or 6-speed, with various gear sets and final drive ratios to choose from. 3.54, 3.90, 4.11, and 4.44 are all on the table. Keep in mind the rear differential must match the transmission (stock is 3.54). There are options as far as that goes too. R160 or R180, with or without LSD (with that being either a mechanical or viscous unit). Stock is R160 with LSD.
The STI 6-speed is the strongest of them all and recommended given the torque of the EG33. Although, as long as you're not abusing it and driving like a hoon all the time, most of the 5-speed boxes should hold up just fine.
If you're interested in owning one of these cars, be warned that parts are becoming exceedingly hard to come by. In addition, I've heard plenty of people say that many shops, including Subaru dealerships, won't touch them because they don't know enough about them. Also know that the rear wheel bearings are a weak point. If you don't need to do them when you buy the car, you will need to do them at some point during ownership, quite possibly more than once. When buying the parts, it's a safe bet to order doubles. That's how often they go bad. Despite these points though, they are rewarding vehicles to own, and it's absolutely true what Caleb says in the video... It is definitely a head turner!

Just need a couple of turbos and that thing will be a beast! I love the styling on these but the auto trans and 230hp na engine prevented me from getting one.
For sure, boosted will be a beast, but one of this n/a and manual conversion,and engine heavily modified , too. Who don't want an engine idling different every time you start it? lol.
I don't see anything wrong with heavily modified N/A, however that would take some seriously deep pockets for minimal gains. I don't see too much over 350HP at a cost of $40k or more. Much better/cheaper more power/ to turbo it.

Wheel bearings are a major issue with these. Should have been a recall but Subaru never corrected the issue. Wheel bearings are consumables like brake pads. Just buy a bunch as you will be replacing them every 20k miles or so. Learn to do it yourself. You’ll become a pro after while.
The only rumble my Subaru makes are from the rattling heat shields. 😣
The only thing I don't like about this one specifically is the colour.
I don't like black on this car ONLY cause it kind of helps hide the beauty of the wrap around glass

The Subaru automatic transmission, known as the 4EAT, is also used in the first generation Nissan Pathfinder.
In Short, FHI had limited Capitals to Manufacture like a Traditional Car Manufacturer Toyota or Honda/Nissan. They don't make as many models or Trims like others.

a legacy 5 speed box from the same era will work, wrx transmissions way too modern, it will work but require additional work and parts.
Really pretty much any subaru 5 speed will work..... Problem is how long you want it to work and your driving style. I know a guy with a 5 speed from a 1.8 impreza without any trouble, but he drives like my grandma........ lmao For stronger better trans you might consider a 04-05 wrx transmission, both for more strength hydro clutch, and easier install because you can reuse the stock svx rear diff.
The hardest part of manual swapping the SVX is no stock pedal box, since they never made a single svx with 3 pedals you have to combine other models pedals with the svx throttle pedal
