- Eugene Fizherbert is now the newest Captain of the Guard for the kingdom of Corona. Rapunzel’s home will now be under the protection of her partner, but why didn’t Cassandra get this role? Why didn’t Cassandra’s father choose her in Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure? She was the one who had wanted it and had argued with the man formerly known as Flynn Rider, so how could this former thief become a man of the law. Today we are going to discuss why Eugene took on the role of Captain of the Guards!

In a way, making Eugene the captain may give Corona the edge the need to face Cassandra. She said so herself she knows the guards procedures from heart because she spent her life training with them. But the things was, the Captain was in charge during all of Cassandra's life so if Eugene uses his creativity and unorthodox methods and pass them onto the guards now under his command, Cass may as well be facing a whole new opposition.

When you realize one of the reasons why Eugene was made Captain was so the previous one wouldn't have to potentially KILL HIS OWN DAUGHTER. Which means now EUGENE will have to be put in the position of "to kill or not to kill" his fiance's best friend. I.....Disney you bastards. I wanna be happy for Eugene cause he DESERVES THIS HONOR but COME ON. That's cruel.

CartoonishIdealism That’s not actually how Hingis turned out. He didn’t want to fight Cassandra but he knew that he would inevitably have to if he wanted to do his job. So he gave up the position so someone else can take it since he can’t bring himself to hurt her. While he loves Cassandra he is reasonable enough to know that the kingdom WILL need someone who will defend the kingdom against Cassandra’s assault, it would just be selfish to just leave everyone out to hang because he couldn’t do his job or find a replacement.

A position like Captain of the guard is not one you fill with someone who deserves it the most but with the person who can fill this role the best.
Before her betrayel, Cassandra was one of the most likely candidates for this position but at this time there was no need for a new captain.
Now however the Captain felt he wasn't fit for this role anymore, Eugene helped several times to protect Corona, in a rather unorthodox way but still fullfilling the roll the guard has to play by keeping the citizens safe (the red rock incident) and Cassandra is for obvious reasons not a good choice at the moment.
So yeah... makes complete sense.
Eugene has come SO far and I LOVE IT. He's easily the BEST written Disney Prince I'll fight you on that.
I mean, I still do like Prince Phillip too (he's been my favorite for years). And Aladdin. Prince Eric is pretty cool too. And Prince Naveen is charming in his own way😅
Honestly though, I don't think it's fair to compare how all of the Disney Princes were written, not just because the times have changed, but mostly because they have a different role to play in the story and a different amount of screentime. Eugene is a great character and all, but look how much time throughout the movies and series they had to develop him as they pleased. How could you possibly compare it to the very short time Prince Charming was shown on screen in 1950 Cinderella movie, to give an example.
That being said, I agree that Eugene is awesome!

What about the fact that Eugene being the captain of the gaurds actually tells the people that it's never too late to become good , like the whole Flynn poster was about that only
I love how Eugene got Captain of the guard because he needed a character development in the show for so long. Yes we did found that he is the prince of the dark kingdom but we also found out that his mom was killed by the Moonstone and havent gotten any information about her since then. Eugene getting the role of captain of the guard was amazing in my opinion well because like you said Isaac he was there for Corona when they needed him even though he was a wanted thief there. Also he is the one who brought back their lost princess and he was the one help fight back against the Saporians. He also brought back the former captain of the guard from the island of Lorbs. He saved the Fredrick and Arianna in the episode Queen for a day.
He has done so many good things for Corona that he deserves that role. Cass was foolish enough to drift off the path into darkness and not realized that when Gothel took Raps that it wasnt Rapunzel's fault. Hopefully Cassandra will realized that. But I love Eugene being captain of the guard because he deserves it and well he kinda hot in that outfit (if you can't tell I am a Eugene fan) 😉
This is going to add fuel to the fire for Cassandra. Even though it was her own fault for listening and allowing herself to be manipulated by Zhan Tiri.

It's an amazing progression for Eugene and shows that the life of Flynn Rider is behind him. Sure he'll have fond memories but this further solidifies his new life with Rapunzel and the kingdom.
Eugene deserved this. He has stayed by Rapunzel's side this whole time. I have a feeling there is a chance that Cassandra's father only made him captain so that he didn't have to fight his daughter. But anyways, Eugene passes his guard test, which meant he had some experience. Eugene is LOYAL to Rapunzel. He will fight at her side, no matter what the consequences are. I am glad that he is the Captain of the Guards.
Ah yes being by your girl's side while doing a shitty job at the thing needed to be a guard, that's good qualifications!
I feel like when Cassandra realizes she’s being played she’ll begin to fight alongside Rapunzel and Eugene. After the final battle when Cass and the group are on their way back to Corona, Eugene gives her the position because he knows it’s what she’s always wanted.
He might give it to her once he becomes king or when she redeems herself in his eyes
I feel like after what she's done even if she's redeemed the she will no longer be able to ever get position of Captain of the guard.

Eugene was legit a thief. And Cass still hasn’t actually hurt anyone (yet). Opposed Raps and used “Raps will save them” sure, but if she actually did hurt someone? She’d be devistated. (She’s still cadging or blocking people with her rocks Unless Raps is around to...keep them from going splat or squish. And keeps repeatedly saying “I don’t want to hurt you.” So...despite ZT, Cass still isn’t truly malicious.)
And Eugene...was a thief...and stole Raps’s crown. And Varian HAS actually committed treason and actively attacked the kingdom. He now has a second chance and he’s working to keep it.
Also, Raps still hasn’t given up on Cass. (And she’s the force behind Eugene, the Thugs, and Varian getting a chance to Do Better *after* they wanted it)
@@anonymousfellow8879sure, he *was* a theif, but he's not anymore and he's worked hard to gain people's trust and become the man he is today, so much so that now even the Captain, the person who had despised him the most, trusts him enough to become his successor. Plus, everything Cass has done and is going to do is alot worse than anything Eugene has ever done and she is a much bigger threat to Corona than Eugene ever was.

And what Cass has done-
(which actually isn’t much at all. It’s more interpersonal still at this point than anything, and ironically probably saved Rapunzel’s life as an unintended irony as that WAS going to be Eugene’s motivation for a “betrayal”)
-is still literally *N O T H I N G* compared to Varian’s crimes.
-willful treason
-attacked and kidnapped Queen Ariana
-attacked the guards
-aided an invading force
-drugged the King and Queen for a *YEAR* resulting in permanent memory loss (which they’re slowly regaining bits of it, but the damage is still done)
Cass...took the moonstone before Raps could. Other than threatening Calliope and the Gang, Cass still really hasn’t done anything that wasn’t directly against Raps. And even then? Cass still anticipates Raps to save them (and save herself) and takes advantage of that...but that also has “nobody will REALLy get hurt...” going on in the back of her mind.
I enjoyed Eugene getting the captain of the guards position and him having an identity crisis in the last episode because it shows that he wants to do more with his life now then at the start of the series
The irony that Eugene is living out Cassandra’s dream is not lost on me.
Honestly? I like the idea of Eugene being captain. He’s improved so much. He hasn’t betrayed the princess (Cassandra has. Which is a criminal offense and she’d be in jail) and loves her so much. Sadly Cassandra has lost her chance. I trust Eugene the most and he deserves it.

cherry sticks Well he’s going be future ruler of Corona. He’s going to have duties no matter what. So he can handle being captain too. He’s not going to be king just yet for Frederic is still alive ruling Corona. I can see him stepping down when the time of Rapunzel ascending the throne comes.

She committed treason and is now constantly trying to kill her future Queen and ruler of her kingdom she was meant, raised and trained to protect. There's no way she'll ever get that position again, even if she does switch sides again. And if she does get to become the Captain at the end of the series, that would still be highly problematic because YOU ARE PROMOTING A TRAITOR to that position.
@@cherrysticks8606 It would be pretty hypocritical if they would not forgive Cass but they forgave the others and treated them like that. And I can already hear the echos of sexism if that would be the case.

The reason is simple as we advance through the story Eugene became more mature while Cassandre grew more immature and made bad decisions like a child.
I don't know that the captain intentionally kept Cassandra's past a secret from her. He may not have known she repressed the memory. Neither of them have ever been the type to open up readily, even to one another, so Cass likely never even asked. She remembered being adopted, but that was it. And the captain would've been reluctant to talk about it anyway because he didn't want Cass' secret revealed to the king and queen. If they had realized Cass was Gothel's daughter, they may have had her taken away from the captain. And he was likely experiencing a bit of survivor's guilt; he gained a daughter by the same event that cost his king a daughter. The problem wasn't deceit, it was a simple reluctance to be open about feelings. And Cass had no place to call him out on a habit she admitted to having herself and having no intention of breaking.

I actually had the same opinion as you Isaac, I wasn't a big fan of Eugene in the Tangled movie because he never really learned that being a thief was wrong (considering he stole a precious possession of a grieving couple whose child was kidnapped, he really should have). But I've grown to really care about Eugene in Tangled the series. He tries so hard and grows up and becomes a better person and he accepts Rapunzel's overwhelming kind-nature so much in the Series. I really think him becoming the Captain is bringing his arc to a very appropriate point because it shows how far he's come!
Meanwhile I've slowly started hating Cass more and more as the series progressed up to now, girl needs a snookers bar.
@@zacharyyamashita8554 I feel the same way. Tbh I never really liked that character. But now I just cannot stand her, I don't care if she was manipulated it was her choice to betray Rapunzel. I'm just so happy that Eugene is now captain of the guard, it shows just how much of a character development he has had. As for my prediction of the finale, knowing Disney, Cassandra is going to get redeemed, which I don't really want, but somehow she will be cut out from the picture. It could be a self-discovery journey, prison or could even die. But we'll just have to wait.

As much as it hurts me, I agree with what you are saying. I also think that once Cassandra is redeemed she might want to go out in the world to find what she really wants as a way to heal from her experiences throughout her past

I love how the captain was able to say” okay I am not okay mentally I have to step down” a lot of people when they are in a position like that they push themselves like that they end up being wreck less
You know, I just realized that all of Cass's motivations string from the things she loved being *ripped* from her life (usually because of Rapunzel). First Gothal, then her reputation, then her authority, and now the one position that she had been training for and dreaming of her whole life was *ripped*away from her, again by someone close to Rapunzel. That has to be the straw that broke the camel's back.

But for me , I think Eugene definitely deserves this position more than Cassandra now because a true Captin of the guards would never turn against her kingdom like that, no matter what!
So yes, she has fallen into darkness and that's the price for it.

The Captain of the Guard should put the kingdom frist and have a desire to protect and be willing to follow orders.

I completely agree w/ what you're saying. Cass deserved this in the past yes, but as of this moment. She betrayed the while dang kingdom and is still against them. Eugene has done so much for Corona. I like this development, of how Eugene was transformed from being a thief, someone who breaks the laws, to being the captain, a man who makes the law come true. Also, he technically would be fulfilling his family's legacy because of the situation he is in: protecting others from the power of the Moonstone, and I think the best way to do that would be being the protector of Corona.
I only hope that they use this new element well at the end (although taking into account that only two chapters are missing, it will be normal that they do not take full advantage of it) since they could use his experience and creativity to make a counterattack plan against Cassandra, as another user said in this comments section.
Certainly, Cassandra will be bothered by this. However, I hope that with this she will begin to realize that her goals are not clear, that she is letting her emotions control her and that she gave up everything she loved and wanted in the moment that she betrayed Rapunzel. I think that, if they had more time, they could develop this situation deeper.
But well, that's my opinion. Sorry if my English is not perfect.

Before we knew Eugene was a Prince, his official title as Rapunzel's husband would have been Prince Consort, he would have never ascended to "King." Now that he is a Prince in his own right, all be it of a fairly non existant kingdom, I think even if he inherits the title of "King of the Dark Kingdom" he would still only ever be Prince Consort of Corona, and like, never inherent the throne of corona even if something happened to Rapunzel. (Tangent: This is something that seriously bugged me about the plot of Frozen. Like Hans honey you can't kill of Arendelle royals,,,, you need them alive to rule beside them or else a cousin of theirs is just gonna get the throne.)

That would be cool but we dont know if the royal political system is the same in this world as ours. In this world maybe Eugene is see as king and can rule if something happens to Rapunzel. There's no rule that Disney can't make it work like that. Also it was implied in Frozen in the same universe that ,this is how it works.
And Im pretty sure they'll name a regent over some random prince. Also, would a spoken agreement of marriage to the younger more naive princess, hold up after all the eternal winter stuff was over? Especially one made in secret, to foreign prince, who was the person to see her die?

Oh, that I was actually happen when I was watching this episode "Flynnpostor" from RTA Season 3.
It explains on why Captain of the Guard is decided to retired to replace Eugene Fitzherbert and sure in fact that caused his nightmare about a fight between himself against his daughter (Cassandra). Surely, with this heavy heart won't undo her cause but Cassandra didn't become a Captain of the Guard. But in truth she got manipulated by Zhan Tiri at all clear.
This is why I found Cass's whole "waiting in the wings" thing to be kinda dumb. She was so close to getting that position herself and she more than anyone should know that that job isn't about glory or getting the credit. It's about serving to the best of your ability because it's the right thing to do and taking the orders of your leader even when you disagree with them.( In this case Cass touching Rapunzel during the decay incantation even though she was told not too) If all she really cared about was recognition she never deserved it in the first place.
Yeah, especially if you consider the fact most people who are perfect for leadership often don’t want the position since they understand the responsibilities involved, and also often aren’t concerned about the prestige.
The more I think about it, Cass from the beginning has always been like Gothel in certain ways. Where Gothel was vain and obsessed about her appearance, Cass has always kind of been the same way about her reputation.
I think that Cas felt like she was waiting in the wings because her dad had made it clear she probably wouldn’t get the position if he had a choice in the matter.

@@xCoatlicuex ok thats fair, but I mean I feel her impatience on a spiritual level (not necessarily that specific instance, but in general). I would sing a song about it. Also her and Rapunzel's dynamic feels like they're hormonal teens.
What I want to know is why some people were upset by this, I was surprised but not upset I think he will be a great Guard.
I think it's mainly the Cass stans who are upset because they would've wanted Cass to become captain since it what she wanted and worked for her whole life and they think it's unfair to her for the position to be "handed" to a former theif (even though he's grown so much and has definitely earned it) when he never wanted it himself

I do feel bad for the Captain, but even though he though he was protecting her. I do believe it would’ve been better if he’d told her. It’s always worse when you have to find out personal information second hand.

I feel like in the the end Cassandra will not be Captain of the Guards but leave Corona and actually follow her own real dreams. It seems that while Cassandra likes that sort of stuff she wanted to be captain to make her father proud since in 'Cassandra vs. Eugene' she says she "doesn't have time for dreams" hinting to the fact that it isn't her dream to be captain, she just wants to please her father. I don't know just a thought. I really really hope that Cass is redeemed soon though! She is my favorite character in the series.

I can see though this possibly putting Eugene and Rapunzel at odds. While I’m Eugene would want Cass to be saved. I also feel that if he thinks killing Cass is the only way to save Corona, I could see Eugene having that mind set.
Even though Eugene is a good choice I really feel that this was a bad decision. Eugene being the Captain will anger Cass more than any other choice which puts the safety of Corona at risk.
I agree with this 100%. One of the main reasons Cassandra turned into what she is now is cause she felt others were always put before her. And while now having a role in the Guard might seem minor in comparison to the power she has now, it’s going to spite her and only fuel her anger.

Aussie Disney Girl Lmao, that’s something she’d do! You know, to be honest, a lot of people have been speculating Cassandra will get her redemption in the next episode (due to the title) but honestly if it were to happen, finding out about Eugene would just push her over the edge.
@@sukkavore4705 Yes I think she will almost get there but something will stop her from being fully redeemed (like in A Tale of Two Sisters). I think her full redemption will happen in the final episode - hopefully towards the beginning because I don't want a last minute redemption!

I feel like the main villain of the last episode will be Zhan Tiri and that Cassandra will quickly realize that she’s been manipulated early on (Cass still has a brain!). Hopefully, she’ll see that and go to alarm Rapunzel or something so they’ll have to fight together to defeat Zhan Tiri.
Yeah...this is definitely going to sting when she finds out but as you said, this is the price Cass has to pay for turning her back on and betraying her adoptive father, her friends, and the people of Corona. And the sad thing is she still doesn't see herself as the villain, but as the victim, so Cass thinks her actions are justified even though she really HAS become the villain thanks to being manipulated by Zanteri (sorry if I spelled it wrong.) So we'll just have to see if Cass can still come to learn and accept the truth, that she robbed HERSELF of everything she held dear even though some mistakes were made by her father and best friend and do the right thing which is to give up this path and the moonstone.

With all the hard work she put in over the years her efforts were always overlooked and diminished because no one saw her more than a lady in waiting. In all honesty it’s kind of stupid that Eugene became the captain of the guard. Sure he’s changed but that role doesn’t fit him. Making him the captain of the guard is a slap in the face. The captain was so quick to give Eugene the position but couldn’t even allow his caught to join the royal guard. Smh he’s supposed to be her father but has little faith in the work she does. Everybody has a breaking point and just like varian Cass reached hers. I don’t blame her all I hope is that she gets redeemed and goes on her journey of self discovery and sets her own path.

Cassandra betrayed the kingdom. Eugene was a thief. That's not the same gravity. Cassandra betrayed the princess whereas Eugene gave his life for her, literally. So it makes sense Cass doesn't deserve the position anymore, even if she redeems. Eugene is meant to be Rapunzel's husband, not really a king so this position is better for him.

I was skeptical about Eugene’s new role at first but now I think it’s very fitting in this show. If a devilishly good looking thief can one day grow to be mature enough to fit the role of captain of the guard, then maybe hope isn’t lost... even for our most wayward friends. 🌙
Personal theory: the only way to get through to Cass is for Eugene to call her out, reminding her of how lucky she was to be raised by someone who loved her and to be abandoned by an abusive witch. If the person she's been fighting with for years over petty things tells her how much he envied her life and tells her how scared he is to lose his new life (he was the first man Raps' met after all, that can be a huge insecurity) maybe she'll regain a bit of sense. Plus Gothal did KILL HIM. How many people know about that part? Maybe the power of healing went into him and when Raps gets seriously injured he sings the song to comfort himself and her and it actually works! THat'd be an epic scene.
Firstly that scene idea is gold, Second I am so happy to meet another person who thinks the same as me, I have had this same healing theory ever since season 2, here are some of the reasons I use to back it up.
1. The only time they ever used the healing incantation song was when Eugene was not around, which to me was weird since you would have thought Rapunzel would want him there to support her.
2. We already know powers can be split since Zhan Tiri herself confirmed it happened with the moonstone.
3. The sequence used when Eugene is being healed after he dies almost completely matches the same on during the scene when the magic flower blooms. A drop hits a surface (ground/Eugene's Face), it then glows for a second before blooming. Also if you look carefully instead of simply disappearing it actually goes back inside Eugene's body. Eugene is the last person that interacted with the sun drop's healing power
To me, this works cause it explains not only why Rapunzel is unable to heal with her hair but also why her hair on its own had no effect on breaking the rocks around Quirin while matching with the logic of the show. Because the majority of the hair shared the same properties as the yellow rock when they clashed they were too evenly matched and cancelled each other out.

+Wotso Videos When I watched the episode, "Flynnposter", I was like, "This episode feel like Tangled all over again." I was surprised that Eugene was appointed Captain of the Guards. I thought Cassandra would've taken the job, but it's sad that Cassandra didn't.
I certainly hope that Cassandra gets redeemed. While there's a chance for Eugene to give her the Captain of the Guard position, I highly doubt it will happen now. Even if Cass does get redeemed, I think there will be other future plans for her.
I just hope she won't grow more angry and resentful of Eugene because of this. I hope that she'll repent for her dark choices and realise these are simply the consequences for her actions. Hopefully she'll develop a *little* more respect for Eugene after this, and hopefully might come to forgive her father for lying to her about her past. I hope they can grow closer as father and daughter as a result, and Cap can make up for any harsh neglect he may have made Cass feel as a result.
WHAT consequences?! The girl has been in SUCH a toxic state of mind that it TIPPED her over the edge just to be appreciated or approved by others. Cassandra was very skilled when it came to severing Corona but to be honest she cared more about the glory of it and this frustrated me. Cass was always complaining about Raps being better at things then her but that shouldn’t have mattered in the first place. This may sound harsh but I don’t want Raps and the gang to give Cass an easy redemption, I have a feeling that’ll happen though, but I feel like Cass doesn’t deserve it. Her constant complaining annoyed me and she isn’t justified in her actions currently either. The difference between her and Varian is that Cass seems to not want to change, Varian was frustrated and all he really wanted was the save his father. Cass just wants cold revenge.
Yup I agree 100% that Cassandra should not be easily forgiven and if anything it would send a bad message to people if she got off with only a slap on the wrist.

I think the saddest part is that Cassandra just wanted to be part of the guard, yeah captain of the guard is great, but in the first season she just want to be part of the guards and fight, she waited her hole life for it, and Eugene just got the highest rank, out of character development, but still quite easily. It doesn't justify Cassandra actions but it makes you understand the anger Cassandra feels when this kind of stuff has happened to her through her entire life

I don't see how the Captain lied Cass. And it wouldn't have made any different. If anything it could've made things worse from the start. Parents do what they have to protect their children. And if the truth does more harm then good then they don't tell them things.

Honestly, Eugene standing down and giving it to Cass would be kind of a let down. Yeah it was her dream but after everything she's done would she feel she deserve it or even want it anymore. Being redeemed doesn't erase what she went through or the person she became so the question is, will the person she is after being redeemed someone who still wants to be captain. My guess, no. They would probably be someone who needs to figure out who they are and becoming what you once wanted feels more like going back than moving forward.
This is hard for the Captain as this is a 50-50 issue that might not have ended well either way (one maybe to the lesser extreme but still not good). On one hand, yes, not telling her anything about Mother Gothel would make her mad as he knew she will find out one day and we all know where it led to. But I think it was out of protection that he didn't say anything because of the social consequences as well. I mean, if she did know that her mother was the one that stole the princess and word got out about that, she might have been more ostracized from the guard than ever as people might have questioned her loyalty to her kingdom and if she will ever betray the princess or steal her again as her mother did. So instead of being respected as the competent and strong character she is, people would not have trusted her or even maybe gave her the chance to be friends with Rapunzel. So, unfortunately, for Captain and Cassandra, I do feel bad, but no matter how you sliced it, Gothel would have ruined her life one way or another.

I’d like to see maybe if Eugene and Cassandra both become captain of the guards. Like one to guard the day and the other to guard the night (kind of how the lion guard went). I think they both deserve it in their own way though I’m not sure if it is truly Eugene’s dream and maybe he just feels a bit obligated to do so because he wants to be there for Rapunzel and protect her. And not sure if it is still Cass’s dream to be the a captain of the guard
I don't think he lied so much as simply didn't tell Cassandra the truth. I mean it's just as bad, but considering the fact that her mother was the one that stole the princess and clearly left her to the mercy of the guards, it was probably the safer option. If word got out that little Cas was the daughter of the kidnapper, she most likely would have been ostracized by all of Corona and grew up alone, miserable and hated just by association with Gothel.
The Captain realized all of this at first glance and took it upon himself to protect the innocent child he found and give her a future worth having. He made sure she would be able to protect herself and allowed her to develop a respectful reputation of her own apart from her mother who was more or less public enemy #1 at the time.

In the end, I think Rapunzel will do one thing that Zhan Tiri incapable of doing. She will collapse her and Cassandra magic, giving it away full and without regret.

Not even considering his lineage, Eugene is perfect for the role when you consider that he was a former master thief with a large understanding of the criminal underground. That gives him skills and understanding that no other Guard could have
Well considering Eugene can’t protect corona on his wedding day, he’d need someone to fill in for him. That might explain why Cassandra can’t be at Rapunzel’s wedding. (If they ever redeem Cassandra that is)
Obviously I feel bad for Cass but after repressing memories and emotions for so long it might have been unavoidable that she would eventually crack. Don't get me wrong i always belvied she would be redeemed but even if Zan Tiri hadn't been involved she could have ended up in a dark place the 1st time she lost someone she cared about on duty if she had become captin of the guards. Still I really wish Cass could have more like maybe her own spin off series.
I believe that the most obvious reason why it was Eugene and not Cassandra was because of Loyalty! My heart is broken for Cass. She fought for that position her whole life and was always put down. But...I understand why the Captain appointed Eugene, because all the reasons you gave are true. In my opinion, I think she'll be pretty mad when she finds out that her rival now has the position she's always wanted. But I read the synopsis for it on the wikia site, and it said she'll have the intention of making amends with Rapunzel. Just imagine how that'll play out.
The Zombies in Disney Zombies aren't really Zombies and most apparent when the Z Band Mal funtions. He his blood pressure goes up so they have blood pressure. He breathes hard so they breathe. The computer even shows their DNA so they have their own DNA.

I think its cuz he deserves it, he grew and has a different way along side the old to keep the kingdom safe. Cassandra wanted it because her father was it and she looked up to him but I wonder if she really wanted it on her own. I think she would be a great soldier though. Though she has a temper as when she got angry at Rapunzel for being good so quickly as a small example and she easily got lead into darkness. That's not good as a captain. Their difference is Eugene can face his past but she cant and let it affect who she became. Eugene worked hard and he had an edge to his ways to get things done. He can figure out ways to keep his kingdom and Rapunzel safe. Eugene will do all he can cuz there is someone he loves not just as his queen but his future wife and his future kingdom. The Captain knows Eugene will do all he can for how well he does to run into any problem with and for Rapunzel. Besides he probably will give her the position later on so he fan be a full King beside Rapunzel, that or he made her his second hand in command.
