I call Bruce Liu "Arturmir Rubowitz". I can't get enough of Bruce's playing! It goes straight to the heart. What an Artist! And that art of his is without a shred of artificiality, eccentricity, or mannerism. What Bruce feels, he plays straight out with the greatest sensitivity with those lightening rod fingers of his! I tell you all that his humble artist is a creative genius! What an impeccable nuanced and soulfully touching performance... Now, a concerto may be thought of as a competition between the soloist and the orchestra. Bruce Liu has his way, yet he always listens carefully and blends perfectly and seamlessly with the orchestra; yes, he projects his unique gifts while in accord with all the other fine music makers. God Bless you Bruce Xiaoyu for an astounding career in the many years to come. What a thrill ride!🎹🎶🤣
First of all, I'm so happy to see Bruce play this beautiful yet almost completely forgottegn concerto by Tchaikovsky! It shows his extraordinarity. Secondly his playing of this piece is very nuanced and very spirited! It is hysterical or lyrical just where it needs to be so and his part is always in full accord with the orchestra! Chapeaux bas! Thirdly, I am happy to see the winner of the Chopin Piano Competition prove that this verdict was so right! Congratulations, Mr Liu! May I suggest to bring the Dvorak's Piano Concerto back from its unjustified oblivion? Thank you! ❤
What I like about Liu is that he can see himself as a part of big picture, a part of music, not above or not in front of it as a soloist. His choice to play this long version including the violin and cello solos show that sensitivity. He completely blend in the orchestra when he needs to. And that made this performance turn into a lovely-articulate CONVERSATION not a meaningless tirade. And that is exactly why/how this concerto works. So for me, that makes him a promising musician not just a pianist! Well done!
You put it so well! That’s exactly how I feel about Bruce LIU, he’s a down to earth guy, always focusing his music above all and not about himself, that’s what draws me to him!!
Sometimes we get the impression that pianists don't blend in the orchestra because of how the sound is recorded... But, anyway, when it comes to playing a concerto, every pianist should always turn their performance into a conversation with the orchestra (unless the concerto requires otherwise). This fundamental conception should not be astonishing. We have reached the point where we have to ask pianists to be musicians. And when they actually are, we have to be in awe ! I hate this era.
@@martinmysteres1384 not sure what you are angry about. many soloists are indeed couldn’t blend well, some are because of limitations others because of ego and it is definitely not today’s problem. so yes, it is something to praise because it is a quality that not every soloist has. and here Liu does that even if he had to replace another pianist in a short notice which means he had a very limited time to rehearse with them and the orchestra had a very little time to learn this piece because they were supposed to play Tchaikovsky 1st piano concerto not 2nd. So again, yes, the orchestra and soloist harmony was something to appreciate under these circumstances. If you don’t like today’s musical level then please go and enjoy the era you are talking about and let us enjoy this beautiful performance.
@@didam992 If those soloists don’t have that quality, they are not true musicians : they are technicians or whatever. So, I refuse to be astonished when a musician comes forward. It’s not even fair to the artist who is judged by default, by contrast, because the level dropped. I’m not angry, I’m disappointed. But feel free to enjoy, I’m just sharing my opinion.

In two days I have watched the video a few times. the more I listen, the more I love the piece. Just beautiful from every aspect! And I love to watch Mr. Bruce’s hands and Mr. Rouvali’s hands. Two pairs of beautiful hands 😃😃😍😍
"Liu was precise to an exceptional degree. And he dashed it off with brilliance...There was a great deal in this performance of Tchaikovsky’s G major Concerto that was memorable and that made it such a compelling one. Liu is interesting because he takes a less overtly virtuoso route and gave us one which was calibrated by detailed touches and deft individual strokes of drama. The rarer view of Tchaikovsky’s piano concertos is that there is a deeper core to the music that can be explored. Thank you for this review. Apollonian and Dionysian!! His crystal pristine tone and tempestuous fire with joyful bouncy rhythms, especially in the third movement is incomparable!!! Makes listeners very happy! ^_^
The best interpretation of this difficult concerto. Bruce has it all… technique, artistry, charisma, and the ability to bring out the most subtle of nuisances. And Bruce is always in sync with the orchestra.
I've never seen anyone playing so clean and clearly with adequate pedalling which makes the music more vivid and exhilarating. Of course his crystal pristine tone and wonderful interpretation of music with sense of amazing rhythm, makes the music invigorating
The violin and cello were fully up to the task and with Bruce performed as an unforgettable trio. The challenges of a Tchaikovsky concerto combined with the difficulties of a chamber music ensemble. Some might call Bruce foolhardy but none that he is less than brave. Very pleased to see that he is departing from the standard (i.e., safe) repertoire so early in his performance career. Only the best wishes for your future. Bravo and Bravissimo.
Thanks a lot to Philharmonia Orchestra for fulfilling my hope that Bruce Liu’s debut with PO playing Tchaikovsky’s 2nd Piano Concerto will be released on TH-cam. Ever since Bruce Liu won Chopin 2021 competition, I have been following him as much as possible on TH-cam of this amazing young talent! Thanks again to Philharmonia Orchestra of London!
Wow what a talent! Great technique and beautiful artistry. The Chopin Institute sure picked a worthy winner for the 2021 International Chopin Competition. I love his selection for the encore which I haven't heard before and I love how the members of the orchestra seem to enjoy his performance with rapt attention. Their faces and smiles say it all.

Fabulous! I’ve listened to this 6 times and still find Bruce Liu astonishing. The first movement was sensitively blended with the orchestra, drawing us gradually into the music. The second was indescribably beautiful. Bruce played with a tenderness and poetry that was transcendental. The third movement was not only energetic and dynamic but imaginative, witty and full of good humor, painting a picture of Tchaikovsky’s world of ballet and its many colorful characters. A splendid extrovert showpiece and great vehicle for a budding virtuoso to shine in which Bruce Liu does to great effect. The best version I’ve heard so far.
A wonderful performance by Bruce Liu of this once neglected concerto. Technical brilliance, musicality and those personal nuances and interpretive touches that make a performance special. It was a personal favourite of the Ukrainian pianist Shura Cherkassky who played the concerto throughout his long life but like Gilels and others of that era played the cut version by Siloti which shortened the slow movement with its violin and cello solos considerably. It's great that the younger generation of pianists including Yuja Wang now play Tchaikovsky's original composition without cuts. Earlier recordings by Moiseiwitsch, Mewton Wood and Eileen Joyce etc. mutilated the work even more. Bravo Bruce.
To be fair, I think the Siloti version was an improvement on the original. If Tchaikovsky had one fault it was his tendency to dwell. The middle movement takes all the momentum out of this concerto, and I feel that it was a wise decision to truncate it.
I love that this concerto is getting more attention these days. Wonderful performance, but of course that's a given with Mr. Liu. A refreshingly musical interpretation as opposed to the usual overwrought "bangy" approach to Tchaikovsky taken by most pianists. The violin and cello are the best I've heard in the second movement. That last suspended moment just before the final note was the cherry on top.
I was there for his London debut. It was a ‘Magical, Exhilarating & Touching’ performance. Well done Bruce Xiaoyu !!! The Philhamonia orchestra is brilliant too. Still watching and listening to this almost everyday. ❤😊
For many years, I have wanted to be present at two pno concertos before I die. The Brahms first is one; this is the other. I saw/heard Cherkassky playing the Tchaikovsky pno 2 on black-and-white TV well over 60 years ago and have never forgotten it; and this cto has haunted me since. Am irritated with myself that I didn't know that this very performance was on my doorstep ... Never mind, I have still have TH-cam ...
Listen to the piano part, it outdoes Rachmaninov or Liszt for virtuosity. It was written for Niccolai Rubinstein, the foremost Russian virtuoso, but he found it too demanding. Originally the first was dedicated to Rubinstein who found it difficult, and he became able to play it when it was a success. He died before he was able to perform the second in public. Tchaikovsky modified all 3 piano concertos on the advice of Liszt's colleague, Siloti, so it's difficult to imagine how much more of a demand the original made. This one was revived by Gary Graffman and several of his students are said to have studied it with him. He in turn was taught by Frederick Lamonde, Liszt's pupil, though there doesn't seem to be a record of him playing it.
Magnific and outstanding performance from such a young guy. The best I have heard: command, perfect technic, poetry and coloured, highlighting the best phrases of this magnificent master piece. For me, the best piano concert from genius Tchakowsky...
The 2nd movement is an exquisite piece of art and this is one of the rare performances where all the musicians and conductor treat it as a chamber piece and don't take the tempo too fast. After the Peter Donahoe recording, this is the best Tchaikovsky 2nd I've heard. Brava to all!
Absolutely stunning performance! Brilliant pianist, conductor, orchestra; and solo cello and violin! What a wonderful concerto! Sadly and unfairly overshadowed by the 1st. After this, I hope we will hear it played more often. Thank you for posting.
Breathtaking, he is at ease in this magnificent concerto to which he gives life by his delicate touch, the power of his virtuosity making a dazzling interpretation with so many nuances and stunning legato.Bravissimo 🌹🌻🌞💥
I saw Stephen Hough on piano with a symphony in 2011. I went on a whim. They played this. I'd never heard this concerto before and it just floored me. I'll never forget it my view, seats up a bit almost underneath the balcony. I could see his arms and hands perfectly, I could see his fingers hit the keys. I'd never seen nor heard anything like I it. I could not fathom how Tchaikovsky or anyone could create such a magnificent sonic tower where once stood nothing.
What a superb performance all round! How great to hear the Second Movement as Tchaikovsky (not Siloti) intended. It requires both a violinist and cellist at the first desk of the highest order, and this is precisely what was provided. Bruce Liu's playing was everything that the music required and WHEN it was required: virtuosity and precision, but also great tenderness and insight. What in particular was wonderful to see was how everyone, pianist, conductor and orchestra were so utterly committed and ENJOYED themselves!
Apart from the ordinary conducting, this is an absolutely phennonemal performance of the Tchaikovsky Second Piano Concerto. No getting mired down in any issues of technique as to how to approach this piece. Compare with Graffman, which i grew up with. This blows that COMPLETELY out of the water. Completely.
One of most underrated works by Tchaikovsky. Though the composer was never accounted a really great pianist he certainly knew how to write effectively for the piano. I would not be surprised if a pianist who plays both the first two concertos considers no.2 better laid out for the keyboard than no. 1.
Magnificent, in every respect. I love this concerto, and the second movement especially (when played in full). Thanks to everyone for making this available for us to view and savour.
Ok but after listening to this a dozen times I've come to the conclusion that this concerto is eons better than the First. I'm convinced that it isn't as popular because most pianists don't want to share the spotlight with the principal string players.
Bravissimo, Mr. Bruce Liu !!! He is an outstanding pianist like a chameleon. He is an artist of various colors no matter what pieces he plays!!! 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you for sharing such a wonderful performance of the Concerto. Congratulations to Maestro Santtu-Matias Rouvali and all the musicians. Special congratulations to Mr. Bruce Liu for a successful debut in London. Mr.Liu is an eminently talented pianist, whose playing captivates the audience with the richness of colors. Bravo!
Mvt 2 might be the compositional hierarchy of all time. Fabulous violin and cello and an after thought keyboard part. 1st mvt. Cadenza as well as the rest of this difficult opus brilliantly performed. Previous favorites Pletnev and Wang.
I love to see Liu's happy face afterwards embracing with M. Sancttu. It obviously denotes the dialogue between the piano and the orchestral instruments were well balanced and harmonious! Stunning performance! Bravissimo!! I am so happy for you M. Bruce! 👏👏👏👏 😆💙
What an interesting concerto: the 2nd movement is essentially a violin concerto with the piano serving as accompaniment, occasionally turning into a trio with the cello playing a good role.
Cudowny koncert. Jestem oczarowana Brucem Liu, zresztą juz od konkursu chopinowskiego, ale fantastycznie towarzyszyła mu orkiestrą. Pierwszy skrzynek i wiolonczela to majstersztyk. Polecam wszystkim 👏👏👏 Brawo brawo brawo.!!!

Bruce Liu plays with body and mind! Enjoyable to see harmony in both body and mind expression of his music! Orchestra members shows appreciation and joy with him!
Bravo Bruce Liu, Conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali, the Philharmonia Orchestra, concert master and the principal cellist; the latter two were absolutely amazing. This concerto was so refreshingly unique and brilliant; the best I have ever heard. Congratulations to all of you.
Thank you very much for this wonderful performance with such high quality video production! I enjoyed it very much. Mr. Liu will record this concerto as an album from Deutsche Grammophon in the future and this performance with Philharmonia Orchestra and Mr. Rouvali will stay as a gem of his until then.
Mr. Liu is of course magnificent, but the string soloists in the second movement are also magnificent and deserve to be credited. Really first-rate playing.
I just finished watching the Second Piano and the Sixth Symphony, and decided to leave a comment. These are both sublime performances. Santtu-Matias Rouvali is from Finland and Bruce Liu is from Canada, and the orchestra is London based but they all pay a big tribute to the music written in Russia. Bruce is a big talent. It is a huge gift that for his debut he decided to play Tchaikovsky's the 2nd. I appreciate that despite his outstanding technical stills he picked a concerto in which he is not dominating the orchestra, letting the strings play significant lyrical parts, especially in the second movement. The first violin and cello have to join the piano as if the piece were a chamber music. The work of video producers and sound recording is very professional. I can hear all instruments in stereo. Bravo and bravissimo! But unfortunately, this is not enough. I see this recording was made in March 2022 when Putin and his KGB thugs were attacking Ukraine. That is, at the very time of the battle of Kiev. This was the most important thing for this performance. I am sure. The soloists, the conductor and the management of the philharmonic were facing a really tough dilemma. I heard that when the war began a few performances were cancelled in the US and Europe as part of the public campaign against Putin's violence. This is not fair to the general audience, the management that schedule programs ahead for the season, and musicians who rehearse and perform what they feel like playing. Anyway, the orchestra decided to carry on and still perform Tchaikovsky. That is why you are true big artists. You did not ruin the efforts of a big number of people. And Bruce’s, of course, as he had decided to memorize this piece for this performance. This recording is a good proof that for an exceptional performance today it takes even more than the world's best talent and management. One has to sort out huge ethical and moral problems, and uncertainty.
Tchaikovsky began working in his second concerto while visiting his sister in Kamenka, near Kiev, and composed most of it there. He visited Ukraine a lot and most of the themes in his second symphony were based on ukrainian folk tunes.
Thanks for sharing the recordings with music lovers all around the world. It’s the long waited video. Brilliant performance, perfect filming! 500+ views in 5 hours! Bravo and thanks to all involved! Maestro Santtu, Mr. Bruce, the concert master, the principal cellist, all the orchestra members, the lucky and warm audience, the awesome cameramen and technicians, and Auntie TH-cam. Thank you all for making it happen! 😀❤️
Very few pianists can play this today. I've heard all of the recorded versions. IMO, this is the most complete performance of this monumental concerto! Bravissimo!

Glad you enjoyed it Carl!

Thank you Bruce for entering the music scene. Your interpretations, artistry, humanity and integrity are welcomed with open arms.
Great performance and great music!
Bravíssimo, Bruce Liu! 👏👏👏👏Brazil loves you too!❤️🇧🇷
Breathtaking, he is at ease in this magnificent concerto to which he gives life by his delicate touch, the power of his virtuosity making a dazzling interpretation with so many nuances and stunning legato.Bravissimo 🌹🌻🌞💥
Congratulations to Bruce Liu for his great UK debut with the Phiharmonia Orchestra!
Agree and so well put!👏👏👏👏👏
Wow
💎💎💎💎💎👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🇦🇷
Apart from the ordinary conducting, this is an absolutely phennonemal performance of the Tchaikovsky Second Piano Concerto. No getting mired down in any issues of technique as to how to approach this piece. Compare with Graffman, which i grew up with. This blows that COMPLETELY out of the water. Completely.
There are, on TH-cam full performances of this concerto by both Yuya Wang and George Harliano to compare.
One of most underrated works by Tchaikovsky. Though the composer was never accounted a really great pianist he certainly knew how to write effectively for the piano. I would not be surprised if a pianist who plays both the first two concertos considers no.2 better laid out for the keyboard than no. 1.
Since his triumph last Autumn, every performance this dude gave has been a gem.
❤Gracias Philharmonia Orchestra❤️!!!
De nada! Gracias por pasar tiempo en nuestro canal!
Przepiękny koncert i to wykonanie .... chce się słuchać jeszcze raz słuchać w nieskończność..
Magnificent, in every respect. I love this concerto, and the second movement especially (when played in full). Thanks to everyone for making this available for us to view and savour.
Spectacular performance ! The control and the passion are so well balanced. Bruce you are amazing 🙌
I like the way he bounces around as he enjoy the music making.
Ok but after listening to this a dozen times I've come to the conclusion that this concerto is eons better than the First. I'm convinced that it isn't as popular because most pianists don't want to share the spotlight with the principal string players.
Totally agree with you! It’s also reputed to be one of the most difficult works among concerti, definitely more difficult than Tchaikovsky no 1 !
@@gugendir Is this the original version?
동의
Incomparable! Gracias!🇦🇷
Gracias por pasar tiempo en nuestro canal!
Bravissimo, Mr. Bruce Liu !!!
He is an outstanding pianist like a chameleon. He is an artist of various colors no matter what pieces he plays!!! 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Brrrravissssimo!!
Bravo!
Thank you so much to the Philharmonia Orchestra and Bruce Liu for this invigorating performance, and for sharing such immense talent with the world!!
Thank you for watching Ella!
Yes!!!🇦🇷
"invigorating performance"!!!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Mvt 2 might be the compositional hierarchy of all time. Fabulous violin and cello and an after thought keyboard part. 1st mvt. Cadenza as well as the rest of this difficult opus brilliantly performed. Previous favorites Pletnev and Wang.
You know a performance is that good when you stand up to clap after it ends, at home.
And thank you London Philharmonia for producing this great program and making it public!
A wonderful performance of this seldom heard concerto.
we had to wait for LIU to appear for this concert to show all its greatness
What an awesome encore!
Amazing! Genius!Bravissimo!
Exelente ❤️🇮🇷 directora de orquesta. 😘
Stunning performance by any standards and obviously worth many more viewings. Excellent video work too of course. Generally thoroughly enjoyable.
9:36 that theme is pure genius
ein sehr ein wunderschönes stück Bravissimo
Excelente. Magnífico. Soberbio. ❤
Cudowny koncert. Jestem oczarowana Brucem Liu, zresztą juz od konkursu chopinowskiego, ale fantastycznie towarzyszyła mu orkiestrą. Pierwszy skrzynek i wiolonczela to majstersztyk. Polecam wszystkim 👏👏👏 Brawo brawo brawo.!!!
Quiero ponerme límites. Imposible. Este concierto aligera hasta el alma misma. Es único! Es bello en cada segundo! GRACIAS!
Bravissimo!!!
Gorgeous performance all around of a wonderful piece of music.
Glad you enjoyed it
So nice and Great concerto❤❤❤
Bruce Liu plays with body and mind! Enjoyable to see harmony in both body and mind expression of his music! Orchestra members shows appreciation and joy with him!
Bravo Bruce Liu, Conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali, the Philharmonia Orchestra, concert master and the principal cellist; the latter two were absolutely amazing. This concerto was so refreshingly unique and brilliant; the best I have ever heard. Congratulations to all of you.
Glad you enjoyed it Jean-Paul! Thanks for watching
It would be nice to know the names of the principals.
Ottimo concerto.Stupendamente eseguito e diretto. Bravi.
Thank you for uploading this! What an amazing performance from the orchestra & Bruce!
Thank you for waiting for TH-cam release. Great performance!
Wow! Such a beautiful work!
👏👏❤Thank you
Thank you very much for this wonderful performance with such high quality video production! I enjoyed it very much. Mr. Liu will record this concerto as an album from Deutsche Grammophon in the future and this performance with Philharmonia Orchestra and Mr. Rouvali will stay as a gem of his until then.
WOW! HOW do you know this ?
Mr. Liu is of course magnificent, but the string soloists in the second movement are also magnificent and deserve to be credited. Really first-rate playing.
Thank you for the lovely comments, and for spending time on our channel.
Bravissimo!
Glad you enjoyed it!
