    She didn't know he had a neck injury when she first grabbed him. She already had him in that position when he told her his neck hurt, so she opted not to move him any further.

      Strangely enough being in the pool helped her support his neck straight to his spine despite him being so much heavier than she was. He could just quietly float until help came.

    I'm just in disbelief that he dived into an above-ground pool. I thought it was common knowledge that they aren't deep enough to dive into.

    • @bradleybriggs1616
      @bradleybriggs1616 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah their definitely not deep enough. I don't understand why there was a diving board there any way. This should be illegal. That 1 of the most stupid things people could do. If he had been alone in there he would of died thank God there were people there to save him. I hope he,ll know not to jump or dive into shall water anyone out there. I'm sure he learned his lesson and the pool owner too.

    I was in a car accident in 2002 and had to be taken to the hospital. My friend flipped her car when I was riding with her, and they put us both in the same ambulance. There were one or two paramedics up front, and there were two in the back with us.

  • @allgood2000

    A dive is when you jump into the water head-first. A cannonball is when you jump in a "balled up" position, with your knees against your chest and your arms around your knees, and you land butt-first or on your back. Based on the re-enactment, it looks like he tried to do a flip and assume the cannonball position in midair, but he messed up and hit the water head-first because he didn't flip all the way over.

    This cannonball challenge felt like a tiktok challenge before the tiktok challenge. If there’s anything this show teaches you it’s not dive into an above ground pool. That’s why we built a pool that had a deep end. My neck hurts just from watching it. I’m glad the kid is okay.

    It’s been 28 years since this happened so Scott is 46 and Kelly is 44. When I saw what happened to him, I was afraid and I thought he would die or be completely paralyzed for life. If it wasn’t for Kristen and Kelly, he probably wouldn’t have survived. I’m sure Scott can never thank Kelly and Kristen enough for what they did for him. Never dive into shallow water because it’s dangerous.

    • @CourtneyLachiver
      @CourtneyLachiver 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You're right, it's very dangerous to dive in a shallow pool. My mom always told me that you could break your neck and end up paralyzed for the rest of your life. My mom was on the swim team as a kid and was a lifeguard briefly at her local pool. She said being a lifeguard is one of the most stressful jobs she has ever worked.

    Great comment, I'm a fellow lifeguard as well and you're bang on. Unless you have a spine board on hand and proper training, the only reason to remove the vic from the water is if he goes unconscious or stops breathing. Then dry and CPR is needed.

    Today’s the 30th anniversary of when this happened so Scott is 48, Krista is 49, and Kelly is 46 now. This happened on a Sunday. I was 8 1/2 but I was two months shy of my ninth birthday when this happened and I was living in Arizona. Boy, it was pretty hot there, but it was dry and in the desert and my brother Andrew was 6 1/2. When I saw Scott’s head hit the bottom of the pool, I was scared because I thought he may have injured or broke something. If Scott had been home alone when this happened, he probably would’ve drowned. I’m sure Scott will always hold a place for Krista and Kelly in his heart.

    I can relate to the last bit about not knowing when you’ll need to use your knowledge to help in a medical emergency. Over the years I’ve watched a few videos on what to do if someone faints, and I have taken emergency preparedness courses that covered how to treat an unconscious patient, but I never thought I’d have to put my knowledge to practice (tbh I always thought I would be the one to be treated for fainting, because low blood pressure and anxiety run in my family!) But last year, during a midterm, I heard something that sounded like a stack of books falling on the floor. I thought that was strange because the desks in that room were too small for keeping books for another class, and we didn’t have a textbook for our class anyway. But I decided not to worry about it until I heard someone say “Oh my God!” in a panicked voice. I turned around and I saw one of my classmates lying sideways on the floor. While someone rushed to get the professor, without thinking twice I immediately got up and went over to him, and my training kicked in. I told other students to get him flat on his back and help me lift his legs up onto his chair, because I knew this would help restore blood flow to his brain. Within two or three seconds of doing that he regained consciousness. He mumbled something like, “Oh, please don’t worry about me. Go back to your tests.” We all adamantly refused and stayed with him until public safety came to get him. Apparently he had not eaten or had anything to drink that morning-not a good idea when you’re going into a high-stress situation like an exam (although I can definitely understand not having an appetite)! He recovered just fine and I still managed to finish my test on time, so it all worked out. :)

    Im an EMT, been to this hospital many times, its the biggest one local here, and good for traumas, cardiac care, and strokes. It has a pediatric unit, cath lab, neurology, and a very nice rehabilitation center in far end of hospital. Bad thing is i live in Laurens South Carolina, and Greenville memorial hospital is 45mins to an hour away, depending on traffic. So unless its major we go to closer facilities. That was more of a dive vs a cannon ball, but even doing cannon balls in such shallow water is dangerous.

    This is why you don’t dive in shallow water pools, you can be permanently injured, just what the signs say when you buy a pool

    A lot of them are like that, but are also quite few 'middle of nowhere' segments as well. A few examples:
    Episode 111-"Double Electrocution"
    Episode 126-Lost at sea
    Episode 209-"911 Alligator Alley"
    Episode 315-Everglades Rescue
    Episode 407-"Idaho Trooper Down"
    Episode 422-"911 Accidental Gunshot"
    Episode 602-"New Zealand Shark Attack"
    Episode 622-Jeep in pond
    Also, the three states with the most Rescue 911 segments were California, Texas, and Florida.

    Why the heck did he do a cannonball into water that shallow?
    Whoever put a diving board into a pool that shallow should be sued for everything they have.

    • @dianaisom9206
      @dianaisom9206 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Vicki Bee he didn't do a cannonball he did a dive head first into a shallow pool. If he did a cannonball he would of been fine. He's going butt/feet first and he may have hit the bottom with his butt or something but the worse case scenario is a broken toe or something. But because he went head first the force/weight made him hit the bottom and the force of him hitting the bottom head first made him break his neck. That's why u should NEVER dive in head first into a shallow end. Only dive in head first in a deep end. Because if u hit ur head on the bottom you have a 95% chance of being paralyzed from the neck down.

      Back then it wasn't considered the pool's problem if you didn't know not to dive/cannonball off the end into shallow water. They expected you to know not to do that or didn't have the rules in place. Especially a private pool like this one.
      It wasn't until the later 90's that they started realizing how much of a hazard it was to even cannonball off the shallow end of a pool. They really started hammering it home how dangerous it was and what would happen if you even tried it in the mid to late 90's. I remember 60 minutes did a huge thing about it, my relatives had a shallow pool (which I think was about 7 feet deep at the most) and never thought twice about the father. (who was over six feet tall) using the diving board with his son as long as he didn't do a regular dive.
      I know on camping trips kids would jump off bridges and cliffs to the water below and just checked to see if there were no rocks/sticks in the water below and it was semi deep. One kid ended up as a vegetable doing so, sadly enough in my class though he never went camping on the trips I went on.

    So many of these prove things that people need to be taught, including kids and most adults. Starting from learning to call 911. To the Heimlich maneuver and doing CPR and what instances not to move somebody.

    @gregersen80015 this is not an inflatable pool. its just a shallow pool. its one of those pools that you can buy from pool companies and there are pools like this that have deep ends so you can dive, cannonball, etc. this pool is only about 4 ft deep.

    did you not listen to video???? they clearly said DON'T get him out of the pool. if they were to do as you described he would be paralyzed. because first off lets not forget the fact that these are teenagers and they have no clue how to or even how critically important it is to stabilize the head. second they did not have a backboard, now grant they could use a sheet of wood or something but it would have to be able to be placed under him in the water so he could then be lifted out.
