Yojimbo - The Dog

  • Yojimbo, directed by Akira Kurosawa and released in 1961 (also titled Yôjinbô, occasionally), has an enduring legacy. It was remade in 1964 for a Western audience, as A Fistful of Dollars, and was also adapted as Django in 1966, which itself inspired numerous copycats, homages, and nods-to.
    So Yojimbo stars Toshiro Mifune as the man with no arms, I mean, as a wandering samurai, who chances upon a town with two warring factions, each keen to hire him to take out the other - the twist? Our hero is a calculating psychopath who'd just as soon see both factions destroyed.

    I remember hearing from the criteria edition that that dog always ran around set with something in its mouth and Kurosawa thought it was a great idea to put the dog in just to show that this town was weird.

    "Calculating psychopath"? Wikipedia describes psychopathy as "characterized by persistent antisocial behaviour, impaired empathy and remorse, and bold, disinhibited, and egotistical traits." Mifune's character is calculating, no question, but his violence is directed at the two corrupt factions which imprison the village. Toward the victims he behaves with unselfishness, to the extent that he jeopardizes his scheme by helping the unwilling mistress's family, whom he helps to escape. His disparaging remarks about some of the victims seem to stem from his all too powerful empathy for them and their plight, and his personal need not to get too close to them. The psychopath of the village is the guy with the revolver, and there's a definite and purposeful contrast between him and Mifune's wandering samurai.

    • @Horatio787
      @Horatio787 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      The line that the gun guy doesn't understand Mifune's character's motivations sort of seals that idea in. The idea of such a strong guy, who he believes could take on six guys alone, would want to help the villagers is just such a foreign concept he doesn't consider it.

      Yeah, his whole mission seems to be motivated by the drink of water he received from the poor peasants. In thanks, he saves their son from the two evil gangs. No one seems to notice the most important part. I emailed the professor who did the commentary for criterion and said more or less the same thing. He acknowledged that he never noticed it before but then gave me the standard accepted theory again. I emailed him again and he never got back to me surprise.

      Sorry, he was not a Psychopath. Calculating certainly. At the beginning is the clue. When the farmer and his wife were talking about the town and its problem. Their son running off to join the gamblers. Instead of a Silk Fair, they said there would be a Fair of Blood.
      Sanjuro (The name he assumes here and in the next movie with this character - Sanjuro) went to town and purposely destroyed the two factions. To bring peace. He let the farmer's son go after he destroyed the evil gamblers saying, "Better to live a long life eating gruel"
      What the commentator also missed, due to his lack of knowledge of 19th Century Japan, was this was a time of rapid change. The US had opened up Japan to the outside world. The Samurai was on its way out in favor of technology, represented by the six-shooter. Sanjuro was the old order. They were the law in Japan for a long time. A time of chaos and social upheaval had descended on Japan.
      He fell into an old role performing his old function covertly. A masterless Samurai. We see the corrupt Samurai guards and the official taking bribes to look the other way. Sanjuro did take coins from both sides. When presented with a situation of a beautiful farmer's wife, the indebted and foolish farmer and his son crying for his mother he rescued her and told them to flee. He gave them his money. He was selfless and seeking to protect the good people of the town by destroying two gangs ruining the town.
      It is sad you did a cursory job of watching this movie. There were many subtleties and you did not pay very good attention to what actually happened. I suggest you go back. Pay closer attention. Read some history of the Meiji Restoration. You will find a number of historical references to explain it right here on TH-cam. Try learning and understanding instead of blindly judging. Do a proper review.
      No more glib comments and sloppy work. You have a great deal of competition. Many people are doing a better job with their platforms. You may or may not exceed them. You certainly won't if this poor quality is your average.

    I studied Kurosawa's films in Uni and hands down Yojimbo was my personal favorite. There might be more that have a stronger messages to ponder over and even some that are directed better but there's just something special about this film. It's a director at the height of his craft working with his favorite actor, you can just tell they were enjoying themselves making it.

    I think Fistful of Dollars was playful enough; the scene when Clint Eastwood rides into town and the baddies spook his mule he winds up grabbing the overhead signpost and while he's swinging from it, he sees the shopkeeper and says, "Hello" like it's no big deal some clowns were just shooting at him. Of course, shortly thereafter said clowns fail to apologize to his mule and thus provide the undertaker with some new business...

    • @halflifefan1000
      @halflifefan1000 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@mikemacdee6390 Honestly I think they're all pretty awesome films with different things that make them great, Leone had Morricone which automatically gives him the best soundtrack of the three films, Gian Maria Volontè gives a memorable performance as the best version of the big bad, and that reveal in the finale is just classic. Hill had the bombastic shootings, Christopher Walken AND Bruce Willis at the top of their game, and the unique 20s gangster-western hybrid pulpy story that harkens back to Red Harvest. Kurosawa had three of his best actors feature in the film giving stellar performances, the cinematography is arguably the best, and he had the best sense of humor of the trio too (Fistful had some playful stuff in it too just to remind you all). But that's just what I think makes them all equally great!

    On the video game spectrum, the Way of the Samurai video games adopt this story in original ways for each iteration. Every single one of them always involves you, the player, being swept up in a two or three faction struggle in a small town your character just so happened to stumble into.
    Being a video game and having the control to sculpt the narrative benefits this kind of story in every aspect.

    I think at least some of this playfulness comes through in Leone's work via the overwrought personalities of the warring groups' leaders, at least in Fistful of Dollars. They're all so absurdly serious about their feud and their hate for the other family, that we can easily see why ol' Clint decides to ruin them both for his remunerative enjoyment.
    Maybe that's not quite AS cheeky a thing as happy doggo was in this scene, but I think it suggests a similar perspective for the viewer to take up: Don't feel bad; don't question the morality of our hero, these movies say. Just enjoy the dismantling of these assholes, they're worthy of what they get.

    In my opinion, the dog shares a meaning. With the crazy music playing, and with Sanjuro approaching the village, and the dog, running through him, with an amputated hand in it's mouth, gives Sanjuro and us (the audience) a feeling that this village, is one helluva place.
    And that will go on for another hour and 40 minutes. Funny enough, after 10 minutes of wandering, and stumbling into some great characters, Sanjuro himself, amputates someone's arm. While this time, the arm is just laying there, with no dog to come and pick it up, and dump it somewhere outside the village.

    Shamefully, this is a Kurosawa I haven't seen, but I just realized the "Looks like you chose the wrong party to crash"-guy from the Tenchu series is a Yojimbo reference. Neat.
    Also, Lynch's Wild at Heart directly references this moment at one point.

      Yeah, a (somewhat) literal translation is "stick wielder", and it refers to the notion of bodyguard in the sense of "hired muscle" or "hired thug".
