As a rich baby whose never had to worry about money. People with money can be very very miserable. They also don't get allowed to feel bad, because being born in rich families is believed to be the ultimate door to instant happiness.
I work in an area where I see and momentarily interact with said famous people. I dont get star struck any more. They are just people like you and me. The ego on people is disgusting. Well done.
I never have been star struck. I got to meet a bunch of celebrities when I was a kid and really couldn't have cared less about it. Unless they are an attractive female celebrity that is, but I react the same around regular attractive females.

Probably why animation and pure practical effects are down played is the amount of sway they carry is threatening to the elites with no creativity or semblance of charisma. This whole "TH-cam fame" phenomena has brought massive misconceptions with it. These kids don't want to be video producers with an online persona, their idea is "I'm gonna film myself just having fun and crowds will love me for it!" That's why it's so enticing to them, they basically expect the whole world to love them unconditionally for what they are, just because they have a camera rolling and share the footage. "I'm such an amazing, unique human being, if only the world could know..."

"If you want to be as successful as this channel you watch, this is what you will actually have to do, regularly, no matter what your mood is. If you make being happy on camera your living, viewers will want you to be happy for them even if your puppy just died, or they will leave." They are not stupid. I mean, they are in many ways, but they can learn really well, that's the point. And since no one likes being patronized, honest advice can be the most impactful. Don't deter, just tell the whole truth and point out the less apparent bits.
When I'm feeling low I just remind myself that there are people out there who named their daughters after Daenerys. I remind myself that Emilia Clarke got who knows how many letters from fans telling her how much Daenerys inspired them. I try to imagine their faces when Daenerys burnt a city full of civilians to the ground. It brings me joy.
I feel like the assumption that kids want to be astronauts is something that comes from people who grew up during the space race, when astronauts were famous and celebrated. I mean, how many astronauts are kids actually exposed to now a days? Barely any, so I don't know why it is still assumed that it is a job many kids will aspire to.

I grew up in the late 2000s/early 2010s and when I was little I thought being an astronaut was very exciting. I think that the age demographic of 8-12 years old is not the one that is most enamored with space.
Where's the conquest? Where's the chauvinism disguised as scientific inquiry? When we start equipping our boys with laser guns to fend off Chinese taikonauts on the race to Jupiter's moons to harvest lithium, then it will be exciting again.
I work in the "industry" of theatre as a techie, well I did before covid. This is my observation, and is purely subjective. Those who say they act because they love the art, usually aren't the ones who get famous. It's those with narcissistic qualities who go further in the famousphere. They're the ones willing to do whatever it takes at the expense of others, and to be the most seductive in the room. Kids want to be famous because of not knowing how the world works, and that's why by the time they've finished puberty at 30, they usually give that up. Don't be upset if your favourite celebrity turns out to be a dikhead, they certainly don't care, until they get caught anyway.
Well put and revealing. The itty-bitty taste I had of the 'industry' I knew I was not cut out for that kind of cut throat. I had to let go of the dream rather than my character, self respect, mind and life because it clearly was not worth it. Although that was a long, time ago, it was the best decision I ever made.

When my son graduated from kindergartner 4 years ago, every student i his class had their picture put in the yearbook with a little blurb about what they wanted to be when they grew up. Over half the class had "youtuber" next to their name. I took it as a sign of the times and felt slightly depressed.

Kids change their minds all the time. My nephew wanted to be a youtuber, because his dad is video producer. He's 12 now and it's a math buff, wants to be a scientist. By the time I visit again I'm sure he will want to be something else.

Before online fame, there was reality TV fame. People were introduced to the notion of disposable celebrities, famous for like a quarter of a year and then promptly forgotten about. And after a few years, people got used to that. The celebrity-making machine started overproducing in the name of cashing in quicker, and unintentionally began to cheapen the very concept of celebrity, the elaborate illusion that keeps them rich and powerful. _Then_ came youtube and twitter fame, which is also helping to cheapen the concept of celebrity, just by sheer volume. All in all, I think it's a net positive that the cult of celebrity worship is dying. It deserves to die. We as a population need to grow the fuck up and stop worrying about what the "cool kids" over in Hollywood think, because the cool kids tend to be pretty stupid.

And, if you look at where the "cool kids" are now that the cameras are on someone else, the lights have gone dim, the memory of them has faded, you see a sad, lost, often drug addicted, confused empty person. It must be hell to only be remembered for one thing in your career/life. The smart "cool kids" hit it and quit it making something better of their lives. Many do not.

I understand the draw of fame. I'm a reclusive introvert and an unknown artist, but because my art isn't famous, even though I sacrifice much of my time and strength to make them, it doesn't sell. This means that even I; as someone who hides from cameras; can sometimes feel jealous of those of higher status. As I venture into a gallery and look around, all I see are canvasses with stripes, colors, and paint drippings selling for thousands - for no reason other than the name attached to them. I'm not saying I do art because I want to make money. I do art because I love art- even though my chronic pain makes it strenuous- and I want it to be seen. A piece of me is on the canvas, and I want my message to be heard, but because I don't make enough money from it, I can't put as much time into it as I wish to. I don't want to be famous, but at the same time, I do. Maybe someone else can relate to me: the feeling of not wanting to be a public figure with a recognizable face, but to simply be a respected name attached to our various accomplishments so that it can be seen and heard. I'm a writer, too, and the few short stories I've felt confident publishing online have gotten thousands of reads and dozens of comments. However, people don't read them for "my" writing. My stories differed in genre from comedy to horror, so each time I would publish something, a whole new crowd would get recommended my story since I'm a "popular" writer. This means that even though my old readers are recommended my new story too, they ignored it because it's not a genre or plot they enjoyed. This is far too inconsistent to form any kind of "fanbase" or loyal readership. I envy the likes of Stephen King or George R.R. Martin, whose fans drop at the knees at every new release, and give every new novel a chance regardless of preference, allowing them to gain a fresh appreciation for the like. Anyway, great video! I agree that fame for the sake of fame is overvalued to those seeking it. It seems pointless to be motivated by the desire to be known for it's own sake.
Hey there, I think can understand your feeling. You want some love for your art and all the work you put in and time you sacrificed. I feel that way too. I have times of wanting to be more popular or feeling helpless and like I’m not making enough impact on the world. Like my art isn’t good enough. I’m creeping up to middle age and I’ve been going since my teens, perhaps I’ll leave this earth fairly unknown. I’m coming to terms with it. At the end of it all, I think making art for the sake of art and nothing else is the most high level art shit ever🤘
The pursuit of fame is completely natural but it's corrupt nevertheless. People are very primitive and being more, being recognizable can be compared to being an alpha in a way. Recognition and "alpha" are one and the same, since they represent status within a society. People who call themselves "alpha males" etc are usually justifying sociopathic behaviour and abuse of others. Also such people make poor parents, so they do not further their offspring in many ways.

No matter how many years i have been watching Georg's video's i will always thoroughly enjoy them, i have never known a youtuber to resonate with my own views and opinions as much as he.
I am a man of several passions. I like to sing and make music. I have intentionally passed up on being in bands who have a somewhat large audience and rub shoulders with somewhat famous bands in my scene simply because the thought of being even slightly known scares me. Whether it be an insecurity or the drive to remain free, it is a troubling matter. I thought of wearing a mask to hide my identity much like Orion (who people thought was actually Elvis) or Slipknot. There wasn't even a guarantee that I'd be famous! Just the chance is terrifying for me.
I recently saw the lava lamp smelling of it's own piss in an alley way with a bottle of jack daniels and going on about how the 'blues control everything'. I'm assuming it was referring to the blue lava lamps. I never realized it was a such an anti-chromatic jerk.
I had a dream: playing video games, become more famous, than regular dude and making money from that. I got it. I can be at home 24/7, playing and earning money. And I am unhappy. Now I am in depressed nostalgia. I lost interest in life, I miss 90's, I miss people that I loved, I miss old friends and thought that only celebrities can achive happiness. I wached this video and NO, they are not. And I don't know, where to seek happiness. In eternal working? It hurts being alone with my thoughts even 1 second.

I would argue that the nature of modern media magnifies fame within a narrow context. For example a TH-cam star may be famous among other TH-cam stars and viewers but will be virtually unknown to the general public. Adding to this fact, common experiences that traditionally occurred thru media no longer hold true. In the past ubiquitous culture references such as "Who shot JR" or the last episodes of M.A.S.H. or Seinfeld don't exist in today's atomized populations. So the commonality of media events has been lost and as a result those individuals in the future who seek fame will have a much harder time attaining popularity outside of their media category than those celebrities of the past had gaining fame in general.

Nice to have you back with us Georg, hope the film's going well. I would never want to be a youtuber, the constant changing of the almighty algorithm and threat of demonetisation aside, the amount of emotional labour those people go through is astonishing, no wonder so many of them burnout.
I think there’s an important distinction to be made between desiring fame for its own sake and desiring the recognitions of value (whether one’s own or, less directly, of one’s work). So, if someone feels a bit crap about their peers getting famous for less valuable work than their own, I think it is reasonable for them to desire a kind of redress. I think this can be less narcissistic than it sounds, one could have a genuinely valuable thing to offer or one could wish for someone else to be more famous. This video for example, it is insightful, well informed and entertaining I wish this channel had more subscribers because then more people would get access to that value.

Great video. You're an amazing presenter and I agree with everything you said. It reminds me a bit about "Adam Ruins Everything" video about art. It's the same type of concept where you create a demand for something that has no value. It's a very odd thing, and yet it works. I read that about the mass murderer from Norway (whos name shall not be uttered). That women were THROWING themselves at him, wanting to marry him and have his babies. All because he is famous, or rather infamous. I personally never wanted to be famous. I think it's more of a hassle than anything else. Having the power and money that comes with on the other hand. I wouldn't have minded so much.

We need to drop the pretense that actors and singers and entertainers in general pursue these fields because they have some overwhelming creative drive, it's because they are narcissists and it's a path to fame and status. They want to be loved by everyone and our celebrity worship culture is worse for it.

I hardly know about film actors anymore. I just don't get excited for film releases at all. But i'm way more familiar with tv-series actors nowadays because I feel that television series as a format has widely surpassed the format of films for cinema. Watching a tv-series just give you so much more exposition of characters and narratives. Watching one is almost like reading a book. Whereas film for cinema has to be condensed and compressed to fit within a runtime of 1,5-3 hours, glossing over far too much of the narrative for my liking.

When my son graduated from kindergartner 4 years ago, every student i his class had their picture put in the yearbook with a little blurb about what they wanted to be when they grew up. Over half the class had "youtuber" next to their name. I took it as a sign of the times and felt slightly depressed.

Kids change their minds all the time. My nephew wanted to be a youtuber, because his dad is video producer. He's 12 now and it's a math buff, wants to be a scientist. By the time I visit again I'm sure he will want to be something else.

I regret I have only one upvote to give this video. Unlike the 28 downvotes from "famous" TH-camrs and "celebrities" who are famous for being famous.

Before online fame, there was reality TV fame. People were introduced to the notion of disposable celebrities, famous for like a quarter of a year and then promptly forgotten about. And after a few years, people got used to that. The celebrity-making machine started overproducing in the name of cashing in quicker, and unintentionally began to cheapen the very concept of celebrity, the elaborate illusion that keeps them rich and powerful. _Then_ came youtube and twitter fame, which is also helping to cheapen the concept of celebrity, just by sheer volume.
All in all, I think it's a net positive that the cult of celebrity worship is dying. It deserves to die. We as a population need to grow the fuck up and stop worrying about what the "cool kids" over in Hollywood think, because the cool kids tend to be pretty stupid.
Very well said. And, if you look at where the "cool kids" are now that the cameras are on someone else, the lights have gone dim, the memory of them has faded, you see a sad, lost, often drug addicted, confused empty person. It must be hell to only be remembered for one thing in your career/life. The smart "cool kids" hit it and quit it making something better of their lives. Many do not.
Hmm the cult of celebrity might be dying but it's not gone. Human nature remains unchanged. Zoomers might care less about the normie tv and movie stars but they still love internet fame.
I understand the draw of fame. I'm a reclusive introvert and an unknown artist, but because my art isn't famous, even though I sacrifice much of my time and strength to make them, it doesn't sell. This means that even I; as someone who hides from cameras; can sometimes feel jealous of those of higher status. As I venture into a gallery and look around, all I see are canvasses with stripes, colors, and paint drippings selling for thousands - for no reason other than the name attached to them.
I'm not saying I do art because I want to make money. I do art because I love art- even though my chronic pain makes it strenuous- and I want it to be seen. A piece of me is on the canvas, and I want my message to be heard, but because I don't make enough money from it, I can't put as much time into it as I wish to.
I don't want to be famous, but at the same time, I do. Maybe someone else can relate to me: the feeling of not wanting to be a public figure with a recognizable face, but to simply be a respected name attached to our various accomplishments so that it can be seen and heard.
I'm a writer, too, and the few short stories I've felt confident publishing online have gotten thousands of reads and dozens of comments. However, people don't read them for "my" writing. My stories differed in genre from comedy to horror, so each time I would publish something, a whole new crowd would get recommended my story since I'm a "popular" writer. This means that even though my old readers are recommended my new story too, they ignored it because it's not a genre or plot they enjoyed.
This is far too inconsistent to form any kind of "fanbase" or loyal readership. I envy the likes of Stephen King or George R.R. Martin, whose fans drop at the knees at every new release, and give every new novel a chance regardless of preference, allowing them to gain a fresh appreciation for the like.
Anyway, great video! I agree that fame for the sake of fame is overvalued to those seeking it. It seems pointless to be motivated by the desire to be known for it's own sake.

I think can understand your feeling. You want some love for your art and all the work you put in and time you sacrificed. I feel that way too. I have times of wanting to be more popular or feeling helpless and like I’m not making enough impact on the world. Like my art isn’t good enough. I’m creeping up to middle age and I’ve been going since my teens, perhaps I’ll leave this earth fairly unknown. I’m coming to terms with it.
At the end of it all, I think making art for the sake of art and nothing else is the most high level art shit ever🤘

The pursuit of fame is completely natural but it's corrupt nevertheless. People are very primitive and being more, being recognizable can be compared to being an alpha in a way. Nobody wants to admit that they're primitive though, nobody wants to admit they're animals that rely on instincts.

Recognition and "alpha" are one and the same, since they represent status within a society.
People who call themselves "alpha males" etc are usually justifying sociopathic behaviour and abuse of others. Also such people make poor parents, so they do not further their offspring in many ways.
For certain personality types, people who want others to validate them. And not saying all famous people seek this at all. Some people are just happy doing the best they can at something they enjoy. Which is a point that's made by George
BillySnowball; another point made by Georg is that most people who pursue fame not only don’t get it but also can’t make a living trying. (His Z list bottom of the barrel actors.) If over half of the population start a career as TH-camrs/bloggers, almost all will fail. And the regular jobs they do eventually get will seem like more failure. Sad. 😞

I am a man of several passions. I like to sing and make music. I have intentionally passed up on being in bands who have a somewhat large audience and rub shoulders with somewhat famous bands in my scene simply because the thought of being even slightly known scares me. Whether it be an insecurity or the drive to remain free, it is a troubling matter. I thought of wearing a mask to hide my identity much like Orion (who people thought was actually Elvis) or Slipknot. There wasn't even a guarantee that I'd be famous! Just the chance is terrifying for me.
Whenever I feel low, I just need to remind myself that I am living a normal life.

I recently saw the lava lamp smelling of it's own piss in an alley way with a bottle of jack daniels and going on about how the 'blues control everything'. I'm assuming it was referring to the blue lava lamps. I never realized it was a such an anti-chromatic jerk.
I had a dream: playing video games, become more famous, than regular dude and making money from that. I got it. I can be at home 24/7, playing and earning money. And I am unhappy. Now I am in depressed nostalgia. I lost interest in life, I miss 90's, I miss people that I loved, I miss old friends and thought that only celebrities can achive happiness. I wached this video and NO, they are not. And I don't know, where to seek happiness. In eternal working? It hurts being alone with my thoughts even 1 second.

I would argue that the nature of modern media magnifies fame within a narrow context. For example a TH-cam star may be famous among other TH-cam stars and viewers but will be virtually unknown to the general public. Adding to this fact, common experiences that traditionally occurred thru media no longer hold true. In the past ubiquitous culture references such as "Who shot JR" or the last episodes of M.A.S.H. or Seinfeld don't exist in today's atomized populations. So the commonality of media events has been lost and as a result those individuals in the future who seek fame will have a much harder time attaining popularity outside of their media category than those celebrities of the past had gaining fame in general.

Nice to have you back with us Georg, hope the film's going well. I would never want to be a youtuber, the constant changing of the almighty algorithm and threat of demonetisation aside, the amount of emotional labour those people go through is astonishing, no wonder so many of them burnout.
I think there’s an important distinction to be made between desiring fame for its own sake and desiring the recognitions of value (whether one’s own or, less directly, of one’s work). So, if someone feels a bit crap about their peers getting famous for less valuable work than their own, I think it is reasonable for them to desire a kind of redress. I think this can be less narcissistic than it sounds, one could have a genuinely valuable thing to offer or one could wish for someone else to be more famous. This video for example, it is insightful, well informed and entertaining I wish this channel had more subscribers because then more people would get access to that value.

Great video. You're an amazing presenter and I agree with everything you said. It reminds me a bit about "Adam Ruins Everything" video about art. It's the same type of concept where you create a demand for something that has no value. It's a very odd thing, and yet it works. I read that about the mass murderer from Norway (whos name shall not be uttered). That women were THROWING themselves at him, wanting to marry him and have his babies. All because he is famous, or rather infamous.
I personally never wanted to be famous. I think it's more of a hassle than anything else. Having the power and money that comes with on the other hand. I wouldn't have minded so much.

We need to drop the pretense that actors and singers and entertainers in general pursue these fields because they have some overwhelming creative drive, it's because they are narcissists and it's a path to fame and status. They want to be loved by everyone and our celebrity worship culture is worse for it.

The whole idea of putting myself on display the way that celebrities do is just weird to me. The concept of inviting people to judge you on a regular basis is a fast way to poor mental health. I hardly know about film actors anymore. I just don't get excited for film releases at all. But i'm way more familiar with tv-series actors nowadays because I feel that television series as a format has widely surpassed the format of films for cinema.
Watching a tv-series just give you so much more exposition of characters and narratives. Watching one is almost like reading a book.
Whereas film for cinema has to be condensed and compressed to fit within a runtime of 1,5-3 hours, glossing over far too much of the narrative for my liking.

What you say at the beginning (in particular) is major major major. People worship celebs and govts give them topmost honors, but many actual heroes get little or no recognition.
I'm a composer. I don't care about the recognition it brings me, I actually fear it. What I try to get from people is love, even though I fear people thinking I want love or am in love.
