I stopped using most social media in 2017 and now only really use youtube. I never know what's going on with trends or what people are buying and I'm totally fine with that. I think it massively helped me. I don't spend my days mindlessly scrolling and it's wonderful. Due too health problems in my family, we're living on a low fixed income. We can't afford to buy things that aren't necessities. I haven't even bought any new clothes for myself since like 2016. I worry about what my son needs and that's it. Being on social media made me feel like I was missing out. Not being on it now, I don't even care what I'm missing.

I grew up in a time where going out to eat at a restaurant with my family was a big deal. When we finally did purchase an exciting new gadget that the whole family could use it was a huge deal. We enjoyed our day to day life with our family and friend relationships and exercised personal responsibility. When a treat did come our way it was a million times sweeter because it was somewhat rare. Go out and help someone or volunteer somewhere or exercise or enjoy your family, friends or pets. These are the things that will keep you going and content.

I adopted a senior dog this year he’s about 16/17 years old. And man the way my shopping addiction got curved was like overnight. Yes obviously I bought a few things for him, but as he’s a senior dog he really doesn’t need much (or want much lol). Since he sleeps in his crate in my room it became increasingly more important to me to make sure that my room was a safe place, so no toxic to dogs products, nothing he could trip on or get into. I think more and more we are living in a selfish society without even realizing it. But man having another living thing to care for brought back the emotional intelligence I had as a child, that deep connection to the world around me that was dulled by social media. So many people say that by adopting Bailey I’ve probably giving him more life than he ever had. But I think Bailey helped give me back my life at 22.

    • @minjaarsic3327

using clothing items for decades is something that runs in my family lol. my favorite flannel shirt is one my mom made for herself by hand in the 80s. one of my favorite button ups is one of my grandma's from the 60s-70s. one of my favorite t-shirts is from a school trip to a museum 12 years ago, others are ones I've gotten from friends again many years ago. I do have some new clothes from the past month, because I really needed some, but honestly it's all because that's the way I like it, wearing clothes with memories and history, and keeping them for as long as I can. I also hate shopping for clothes, so that helps curb any desire for buying the New Trend.
my mom, for example, just had her 20 year old favorite summer linen shorts tear a bit in the inner thigh, and she's gonna mend it! the shorts will get a couple stitches and be back up for the next summer. she's also the one who taught me how to mend clothes and the value of it, passed down to her by her grandmother. I remember as a kid watching her mend and darn socks while watching TV, or patching my pants that got torn from playing, and later she taught me how to do it all myself (I'm sure her ancestors were looking down on her in pride for teaching a SON how to sew and mend clothes). a lot of the clothes and shoes she wears daily are at least a decade old, and often from the last century. the only reason she has a lot of new clothes is because she works in the fashion industry and has to conform to the standard, which means new dresses and blouses and pantsuits. it's not quite fast fashion since these are items made to last, but they do take up a lot of space. regardless, she'll rewear even those whenever possible.
sorry for the rant, the topic is just one that is very like ingrained in how I was raised and how I still live.

I think radical minimalism is nearly as bad (not for the environment so much but financially and mentally), because if you throw stuff away and then realize that you need it again, you have to buy it again. If you only have one shirt, you have to use the washing machine every day, instead if you have 7 shirts, you can wash only once a week - better for your electricity bill and the environment. Everyone has their own ideal number of items and it's okay, if you don't go to extremes on either end.

    • @lug358
      @lug358 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +39

No one is talking about having a singular shirt. Just that in reality you are always wearing the same clothes and all of those clothes that you arent using/buying new ones and not using them etc thats the shitty part. Having minimalist clothes means having a good dressing base with good quality clothing that will last longer and that you can wear most of the time

    • @orfamayQ
      @orfamayQ 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +36

@@lug358 The blond woman in one of the clips literally said she only had one fitness top. If you do sports more than one day a week or so, you will have to use the washing machine half empty multiple times a week. I was simplifying the details because everyone will have different ideas about how many shirts etc. one needs, but I still stand by it that having extremely few things is a matter of extreme privilege because it takes more energy and cost more in the long run. People have been pressuring everyone to get rid of their stuff, it's as asinine and unsustainable as hoarding consume goods as in this video.

Sports clothing isn't delicate, I hand wash my wool stuff that would suffer in the machine, but synthetic robust clothing, there is nothing to gain by hand washing that.

I’ve been turning old eyeshadow palettes into paint - that way I can still enjoy the colors without risking an eye infection 🎨👩🏻‍🎨🖼️
Edit: There are better ways to do it, but here is how I did it:
    1. Pick a color
    2. Scrape it out into a container (one with a lid for storage)
    3. Grind it into a fine powder with a mortar or a spoon
    4. Add a little bit of mineral oil (I used the all-purpose oil that came with my Singer Sewing Machine, lol)
    5. Mix until liquid smooth (I used a knife to really smooth out the tiny gritty lumps)
    6. I wanted to make it glow in the dark, so I added glow-in-the-dark Mod Podge (clear glue works too if you don’t want the glow in the dark effect)
There are tons of methods out there, and it depends on what you want to use it for, but it worked out well for me!
There are plenty of tutorials on YT and TikTok that show more professional methods.
    EDIT2:
To add a little bit of context… I used to work at Ulta during the “beauty guru” YT era, and definitely got suckered into buying unnecessary crap. I had my employee discount which made me feel as if it was okay to overindulge, which I regret, but I am an artist so I can at least find other ways to use them (hence turning them into paint).
I’m also a ghost tour guide/actor, so I have been using a lot of my makeup for that as well, and thankfully have enough to last me a while.

I love that idea! I have a mini makeup pouch that I've had for over 2 years (I might need to throw it out, actually...) and all the makeup that I'll be picking up for my Halloween costume will be kept and used to the fullest. As will the dress and boots. I went into planning the costume (Persephone the Queen of the Underworld) with the mindset of keeping everything and using it, even the fake flowers and pomegranates.

The whole “decanting everything into matching containers” trend is the definition of creating a problem to solve imo. Unless the original packaging isn’t airtight (like bags of flour) or literally doesn’t fit into the space you have (like a ridiculously tall box of cereal), it’s usually just more work and expense to make it harder to find what you’re looking for. People get paid a lot of money to make it easy to tell one product from another at a glance, and it absolutely works.

When it comes to quality clothing I suggest to everyone to learn to knit and or crochet.
You can make absolutely stunning garments with quality materials. The process is calming and enjoyable. Not to mention the dopamine hit and sence of pride you get once it's done.
Oh ya there is also a whole community of makers so if you're lonely you have the possibility of making some friends 🙂👍

I never throw away any scraps and have ripped apart foam weapons and props and ripped the seams out of old clothes and costumes to make new things. @Saphia_ หลายเดือนก่อน

I want to learn to sew. I just don't have the patience to crochet a lot of things (as in, I want gratification not instantly, but soon-ish and the fact that I am a slow crocheter makes it really hard to get gratification). However, sewing seems a lot more fun cause ever step of the way would be a new challenge for me and I like being challenged. Also, I have been getting really disappointed with the quality of clothes in the market nowadays and it's also really hard to find clothes that I find comfortable while complementing my body type AND even the things that are good at those two aspects don't come in the colors that suit my skin tone. So, sewing seems like a great way to make clothes that make me look and feel good while also giving me clothes that will last a long time. Because I like clothes that I can wear a thousand times. (I get attached to the clothes I like lol).

Lifelong artist and bibliophile here ☺️. My daughter owned an independent bookstore here in town for a time. I agree with absolutely EVERYTHING you’ve said… our only rules regarding overconsumption are that it’s not hoarding if it’s art supplies, or books 😉.
It is difficult sometimes when you deal with MDD, or even less severe forms of depression because as you stated, we quite literally have the world at our fingertips nowadays. I, nor my children grew up during the internet age, so at times that ‘quick fix rush of dopamine’ is hard to resist.
It’s always good to be reminded that we need to actively practice underconsumption.

Considering my clothes, I'm really glad I did what I did: I saved up my pocket money back then to buy a few, but higher quality clothes, I did the same when I was a young adult, now I have everything I need. I just have to replace something if something is really no longer wearable (some nightgowns were see-through, so that was my last purchase last year). The oldest piece of clothes I own belonged to my Grandma, a coat, which she purchased in the late 50s; I think the oldest thing of clothes I purchased myself is bought in about 1996, a jacket and a body, both a still fine. Same with shoes, I just replace something if necessary.

For make up I own 1 foundation, 1 blush, 4 lippies, 1 contour, 1powder, 1 setting spray, 3 kind of make up aplicators
Skincare I own 4 face lotion based on my skin problems, 1 sunscreen, 1 milk cleanser, 4 perfume (3 of them already finished)
I make sure finished each one of them until nothing left before buying the next one (very satisfying lol)

There was a time when I got sucked into overconsumption, buying "trendy" stuff that didn’t really suit me or I didn’t even like, especially clothes. I’d also buy gadgets I thought I had to have, but they ended up being useless. Luckily, I’ve moved past that, and for over a year now I’ve barely made any impulsive purchases. I’ve finally accepted that my style is basic and kinda boring, and I’m never gonna be a fashionista. I like simple stuff, minimal colors, no patterns or trendy cuts, so I don’t get tricked into buying random viral things that pop up on Instagram anymore.
Now I stick to buying less but higher-quality pieces that go with everything I already own. When it comes to accessories, I keep it super simple-two items in easy-to-match colors. That’s it for shoes, bags, belts, etc. So, I’ve got two bags-one black, one brown, two belts, and for each season, two or three pairs of shoes (I’ve got typical spring, summer, fall, and winter weather here). They’re pricier shoes but last me a good 3-4 years, sometimes more. In winter, I rotate between five wool sweaters that’ll probably last me forever since they’re such good quality. I’m not into heels, blazers, or skirts, so I don’t own a single one, and I don’t even bother looking at them in stores. I’ve got two pairs of gold earrings, one necklace, and two rings-that’s all my jewelry, and it goes with everything and never wears out.
Honestly, this whole approach has been super freeing. I feel awesome about how I live now. I don’t feel like I’m missing out or jealous of people showing off their shopping hauls every few days.

Shopping does NOT give me dopamine, it gives me anxiety ! Lol I'm only watching this because I like your other videos that you've been posting lately, but I really can't relate to this one. I'm currently recovering from extreme minimalism. I haven't worn or owned makeup or even hair accessories in over a decade. I have a husband and a daughter and we literally have each a fork, a spoon and a plate and we all share the same butterknife. We make above average income in the states..it isn't that I'm "frugal" cause I'm definitely not. I never go for the deals/steals, I go for quality which is more often than not, the more expensive option. I just feel so much more at peace and in my calm in rooms that are nearly empty and clear of clutter. For years my apartment livingroom only had a recliner and a tapestry in it. No shelves, no lamps, no decor.. I have finally reached a point of trying to furnish more..this year we got a sofa, a shoe cubby, a mushroom chair, a treadmill, some bar stools, some curtains and a rug. It still isn't very much, the walls are still bare, we still don't have shelves or a coffee table or end tables. We haven't owned a TV in like 4 or 5 years. So you could imagine how stressful it is for me to see people buying all this clutter..what if you have to move ?! You'll have soo much more packing to do !! Why are people like this..?

When I started spending my own money to buy clothes I tried doing that again, now they last like a couple of months max, even something simple like PJs. It got to me cuz my wardrobe was getting constantly faded and I would lose the pieces I loved the most so easily.
Then I found this boutique store that makes clothes in our national territory, sure, it was more expensive. But, holy crap I wear those comfy dresses so much and they look perfect. The fabric is more comfy, I don't have to worry about washing them and having to replace them. I don't buy jeans anymore, I don't buy fast fashion anymore and it made me so much happier.

My husband and I are so lucky- we don’t want for anything, and we both have hobbies we like to do and we occasionally worry that we are consuming too much. These people make me realize that we aren’t even close lol. I’ll purchase maybe one or two items of clothes or accessories a month every once in a while or get a couple new seasonal things twice a year and have started doing a “one in one out to consign or donate” with clothes. I used to love new skincare and makeup but the past few years I just buy the products I need and that’s it (maybe a new lipstick once every fall or spring). Why do I need all that other shit? I only use my skincare routine stuff and a few pieces of makeup. My husband buys electronics components that he uses in his synth building hobby and does the one in one out with clothes too. If we worry that *we* are over consuming, what are these people doing?!? Are they thinking about retirement?! You can’t retire on your bed full of drunk elephant crap haha.

I’m just coming in to say this. I work in private aviation. All the millionaires I see from day to day, pull up wearing button up shirts or normal clothes. People who have money don’t actually flash it constantly. Yeah, they will have some nice cars, but most just run around in a regular car.
I asked one I got to know well about it. The idea is why would I flash it and be a target when I already know I’m wealthy. No need to prove it. It changed how I view money.
I’m early 30s driving an old Toyota Corolla. But I have zero debt now and a nice cushion to fall on if something goes wrong. My money is working for me now in safe investments for long term growth.
I may look like a “loser” to everyday people, but my net worth is more than most average Americans….all because I quit spending on things to impress others and put it into things that bring me returns.

I’m soooo glad I’m not trying to keep up with anyone!!! I only buy what I want FOR ME!!! I typically only buy a few new clothes every year (because I still like most of my clothes from the years before, LOL), I drive an old, but very nice & classy, well kept, luxury car that’s been paid for for over five years (NO car payment!!), and I bought it used too, LOL (a new car is the WORST investment out there-no thanks), I also color and cut my own hair (I also don’t trust hairdressers, haha, and it saves me time and stress too!).
I DO spend a fortune on food and personal care products though, because you kind of have to if you want to avoid pesticides and toxins. I eat organic, grassfed, pasture raised, and I try to use non toxic products.
I’m also a content person. I bought lots of fall decor years ago, and I still love it and am still using the same decorations. I don’t get tired of stuff I love. That decor was an investment in my future happiness, and I do little decorations for all the seasons-nothing major or expensive, but little things that make a big difference.
I don’t know, I just try to be sensible and practical.
I also like being different, so if there’s a popular brand, I’ll probably avoid it just because I’m rebellious that way. 😂

22:29 though i understand it came from a good spot, sewing your own clothes is not nearly as cheap as everyone thinks. i wanted to start doing so but having to buy quality fabrics, thread, a machine, needles, possibly patterns if youre a beginner, etc, all that adds up. i do sew, but its just fixing a small hole. i would love to have the time and money to make my own wardrobe from scratch, though.

  • @AnjuliT

These videos on overconsumption really helped me to reduce my spending! I was never nearly as bad as any of the people shown but I used to spend compulsively and bought things because I "wanted" them not because I needed them.
Having spent time reflecting, and watching these videos, I realized that it's literally a waste of money and it can lead down a bad and even addictive road...
Now I feel repulsed by these insane spending videos - it does not make me feel like I miss out and I am not jealous, I literally feel like it's disgusting and sometimes even sad! It's sad cause this insane spending and constant "reward" of owning new things and buying new things alters your brain chemistry, things lose value and you stop feeling genuine joy when getting something new. It's such a destructive thing, not only for the environment but also for the person participating and their mental health.

I WISH making my own clothes would be cheaper than buying them but honestly it sometimes gives me heartburn when I take on a new project. I don't sew very often, and I am not a very talented seamstress. I can do a few things. I love the pieces I've made for myself and others, but they were by no means fast for me to make or cheap in terms of materials. I love the idea of making my own clothes or having someone make or tail their clothes for me and knowing that they are getting paid fairly to do it. It's just not something I can do all the time. Seriously making one shirt can take me HOURS. Love the idea of cultivating new hobbies rather than doom scrolling and having FOMO. And reading! Reading is awesome.

Ngl the novelty ice is super fun.
Also, as a 'tism, I like the containers and keeping food separate and washed, or pre-prepped. Veg goes in veg box, raw meat-raw meat box, safe meat-safe meat box etc. types of foods groups, or sorted by usage, or time of day you eat it. I love it so much.
No more piles of bagged veg piled in each other. Also washing and prepping your veg makes it last longer and not spoil. Opening and seperately packaging your raw meat into portions keeps it good longer.

We can’t buy houses and have nothing to live for so why not over consume on things that give you tiny dopamine hits. We don’t have anything else we can look forward to. A lot of us don’t have family, hobbies cost money and not all of us live in safe areas to go out alone as women. “Work words buying a house” is such an out of touched statement in this economy. The 500sqft. House that looks like a shed that I rent cost half a million to buy.

    Heartbreaking.
Who needs new stuff when you could have this system in place!?
    I am almost 50yo
I still have clothes, and glasses from when I was in elementary school that I wear. My daughter (who is almost 30yo) wore my clothes until she got taller and out grew them. She gave them back to me. So... also I kept her clothes from when she was a child, and her daughter who is almost 3yo (but in size 5, very tall as well) is wearing her clothes now LOL it's actually really awesome to see the pictures of this happening over the course of generations. My mum is 72yo and we swap clothes when we need a change. It's funny showing up in something we forgot we switched, and had looked for 😅

The over consumption and spending is out of control. Since 2020 it has gotten worse. When people are bored they shop. It’s a “hobby” that is not a hobby at all. I am guilty of this trap. In the last 6 months I have changed so much. When I actually need something I buy it second hand. I make sure before buying new disposable items I don’t have one I can use or utilize something and repurpose. Watch the documentary buy now! Horrifying.
