I'll never look at paper, cloth or rusty bits the same ever again! Wow, they are truly stunning!
Watching this has bought back very distant memories of letter writing days and me thinking that paper was so boring would tea and coffee dye it. I'm reinvigorated and feel like my world has expanded beyond my wildest dreams.
It is, as they say, the little things that count!
Fabulous tutorial and I just loved hearing your excitement as you discovered what you'd created, awesome.
Thank you so much 💜
My absolute pleasure, have fun ♥️
I am really enjoying these videos. Watching you rinse the papers and commenting it’s like developing photos in a darkroom brought me back to my teen years and my Dad developing black & white photos in our basement darkroom. Thanks for bringing me back to that time. Here’s your round of applause👏👏👏. Instead of rain water I could also just melt some snow since there’s a bit here right now.
*takes a bow 😁❤️❤️❤️
That was totally brilliant !!! Thank you so much for sharing. I'm now apparently that person whilst walking her dog, hunting for rusty pieces of metal !! With I may add, success!😁😆
yeay, my kind of person... my daughter used to call it 'spying and swooping', Mummy spies something on the ground then she swoops to pick it up.. 😂♥️
I think it’s time I start playing with some rust. The threads came out beautiful in the tea, so many experiments to try…How fun. Thank you.
I have been so looking forward to part 2 of the rust dyeing process, what a great way to start the day. I have been collecting some rusty bits and pieces and am now about to sort through my fabric and papers and gave a go. Thank you so much for sharing, fabulous videos
As Simon Cowell would say, I didn't like that, I LOVED it! Really looking forward to seeing the Eco-printing!
Stunning results. I would even frame those pieces individually and appreciate them just as they are. They would keep my eyes ‘interested’, as any abstract art does.
I loved every minute of these 2 videos and was applauding and cheering with each reveal! Thank you so much for the time and energy you have put into them for all of us to enjoy and learn. I have many 'too bright' fabrics from my days of making baby quilts, and now I know what to do with them 😊
My pleasure I am so glad you enjoyed it. I have some rather garish peach coloured cotton threads in a bowl of tea at the moment 😁♥️
This has been very eye opening. I never dreamed that you could accomplish such a dramatic change in both paper and fiber. I loved my trip down the rabbit hole with you. Thank you so much! and
Did i miss why one must wear gloves when dealing with rust? And when you mentioned you had a stream aaaah. Just heaven. My place of peace
hello, some people can be sensitive but even if not, it does dry your skin. I just think it's a duty of care to at least recommend gloves, but of course I can't make you wear them. 😁
Thank you for that. I was just concerned as I have not worn gloves in the past
She is working with black oxide here and that is much safer. Tetanus can thrive in the same environments that create rust. Also, if you are trying to create rust with vinegar and peroxide, the combination creates a toxic mix.
@@spiritsgyre2021 thank you ❤️ I mentioned about tetanus possibly being in the same environment as rust in the video too. 😉
Here's your round of applause... 👋
👏👏👏👏👐👐👏👏 💙😊
takes a bow 😁♥️
Your excitement is palpable - I know the feeling all too well. I like to give my small quilts a coffee dip to grunge them up - it gives them a primitive time-worn appearance which i love. The magic happens overnight 😃 your pinny is perfect, as are your lovely stained papers - the fabrics and threads too 🤎🩶
No it’s soo exciting!would never wiz through !
😁♥️
K3N, you have provided us an entire semester of rust/tea dying. Your generosity is much appreciated - so thorough and I will definitely "have a go".
I'm giving you a round of applause from Nebraska USA! I love the papers so much! The marbling that happens is gorgeous. 💜 💜 💜
Thank you so much! ❤️
Very beautiful results Kathryn, I love how everything turned out.😍
👏👏👏 I love seeing your enthusiasm. Thank you for another interesting and engaging video.
Wow, I could watch you unveiling your gems for hours! So glad I found your channel. You are a delight to listen to and you do outstanding projects. Thank you so much for sharing your talent.
Welcome 🤗
I have loved these videos. It is wonderful to find a kindred spirit who gets as thrilled as I do when I see rusty marks! We are in the process of building our home with our son-in-law on an old farmstead. I kept collecting any old rusty bits we'd find as we dug our trenches and foundation. No one understood me. 😁 Now to finish the house so I can make all rusty fabrics. Bravo on such beautiful marks and thank you so much for sharing.
These two videos have been so informative and enjoyable to watch. Everything came out so beautiful, I especially like all the material and thread results. Thank you so much for sharing your process.
We are "Applauding "👏👏👏❤ the papers are magnificent ❤the threads are beautiful colors
Everything turned out lovely , I’ve also enjoyed rust dying several years ago it sure is fun . Really enjoyed watching the results of your fibres . 🤗🤗🙌🤲👏 and here is your round of applause 🎉❤
Why thank you 😊😊😊
Was a gift finding you on here x Thank-you so so much for tour fabulous videos ,I am so inspired and sooooo looking forward to creating this year along with you xx much love x
Hop, hop, hop,…down the rabbit hole I go…. Hugs and blessings, 🤗🤣🇨🇦
😂 it's a complex warren of possibilities 😁❤️
One thing I am eternally grateful for is that I take great pleasure in admiring the tiny details of paper and cloth when treated (or eco printed) as you have done. This is even though I’ve been using these techniques for years. The ‘surprise’ of what I will find is always wondrous. I wondered about wrapping the threads around some of the smoother rusty bits for some variegation. Lovely videos and channel for the gentle, creative soul.
Thank you, I sometimes wrap threads around my ecoprint bundles , gives a lovely silvery grey. ❤️
A perfect part 2 and so good that you showed everything and mentioned tips as you went along as always - that's the beauty of k3n - appreciated as always ❤
Thank you 😊
That was a beautiful start of my day. Thank you so much k3n! 😘
Thank you Kathryn for the video and part 2. Very clear directions. It was excellent to see the process all the way through. What amazing results ,the paper is artistic in its own right. I was most amazed with the patterned/coloured fabric and how it toned it down. I have no fabric stash and just found a lovely company who send 1 kilo of scraps for a nominal fee. I am really pleased with it but a lot is rather bright. We all know what I shall be up to this weekend, can't wait to see the results.
Beautiful amazing results... I was very interested in how the paper turned out. I haven't ever done it with paper at all. I haven't made those type of paper journals. I feel I need to experiment now though because they looked so beautiful 💐😊
Definitely stunning results....if you can get your hand on some walnut shell covers and scatter you get something rathere lovely too.....iv got so many projects on the go ill be at it for ever and a day...😂..thank you so much for sharing Kathryn always a pleasure....
Hiya 🌞, l have used walnut shells and onion skins, too!lts interesting the differences in shading they produce and intensity😊(Julia, not my son,Damien-an oldie learning how to use this device! )Love k3n s chatting.
I have a permanent cauldron full of walnut shells and husks, soaking in rain water.... Of course I do 🤣😊🤣
@k3n.clothtales of course you do silly me how could I not of known...😂😂
@@damienk5011intresting results for sure...happy learning....yes our friend k3n can spin story 😂...
😎😎😎
It's so beautiful! And yes, I'm hunting rust now😊 never thought I would be doing that.
😁
Thank you again Kathryn for sharing the process & such beautifully coloured results on both paper & cloth / threads. Have already tea dyed some cloth & now raiding the man space for rusty bits so I can do paper. Great to be doing water play as it’s been so hot & humid here in my part of Oz. 💕🙃xbrenda.
Hiya 🌞 😊, l really like the " history" in the fabrics that come my way,- just like when you're reading a book and a previous reader has left a comment scrawled in the page! I tend to incorporate bits that have been mended/ altered through their lifetimes more as its like someone sending you a hello through the generations. Have a marvellous week and everyone here😊 ( julia) J.I.M.K Mrs. Brisbane, Australia 🇦🇺 ♥ 😀 😊🪃.
Yes and that is a lovely way of putting it ❤️
I must try this technique. Beautiful results! Thank you for sharing your process!!
This was so educational, I really learned a lot. I want to thank you for sharing your process. All of your pieces turned out just lovely. I really loved the threads. I will be using more of the things I have shoved to the side. You are a rare gem. Again, thank you for sharing!😊
My pleasure, I am so pleased you enjoyed it 😊
Thank you for this video K3n. It's wonderful to see the whole process. Your presentation is calming and very clear to follow. Very much appreciate all your work and care. Ruth A. Xx
Oh, I loved that ! Thank you 😊
Oh Kathryn, this is just fascinating! I have done some rust dyeing before but this is just such a detailed and informative tutorial that I can't wait to have a go again. Thank you so much for what you are doing for us ❤😊
Very good information. I think I will give it a go. Need to find some rusty bits. Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge. Love your channel.❤
I'm going to give this ago over the weekend. I love the historic clothing you can purchase in France, not something I've ever seen here in New Zealand. I'm really enjoying getting back into my slow stitching.
those are absolutely beautiful! luckily i have a large bowl filled with rusted washers that i collect - usually i add them to my stitch work but this is something i can do before that - thank you so much for showing us this
Made me snork with laughter "get a French calendar" @ 22.20 mins 😂😂😂
Yes, absolutely essential, and must be Perigueux in Bloom 😁
Oh how I wish I wasn’t sitting in the quiet carriage of a train, without earbuds! 😂
I’ll have to wait until I’m home to watch this 😮
😂
😍Fabulous! Thank you.
Everything came out beautifully! Love the background marbled look and the huge variety of colours from the rust.
Not owning any embroidery floss, I bought a pack of many colours - many of which are too bright so it's tea time! Great for sustainability.
Also, lovely memories of making pirate treasure maps with my son when he was little - we did it with just coffee and grounds.
The whole process is a voyage of excitement and the end result will be so worth the wait. Thank you Kathryn!
Mary x
hope your threads come out well, lovely treasure map memories ♥️
😮 wow I can’t wait to get going with this! I’ll be raiding the man shed for rusty bits later! 🎉
I really enjoyed these 2 videos… what am I saying I love all your videos., but I have never done rust dyeing and I certainly will now! Can’t wait for Friday to start your next project with you, I’m tea dyeing as I write this! I’m working on a collage piece of my dog Molly, but will squeeze your project in as well. Thank you for sharing your talents. I’m on TH-cam as well as Erndales!
Wonderful thank you. I can’t wait to have a go. I need to seek out some rusty objects first - I think a visit to my brother-in-law’s garage is overdue!
OMGOODNESS I am drooling over such rusty crusty lovelyness🤎🤎🤎
I did some last summer & hot bright sun on our deck did some lovelies too🤎 … thankYou for sharing
I have never dyed anything before, except my hair years ago lol Anyway thank you for showing us newbie’s how to begin a new chapter! I also follow Marion’s World and her new project starts with some rust/dyed strips. She suggested if we don’t have any that we could watch your tutorials and make some! I had just watched your videos so the timing was perfect!! I love both of your channels and eagerly awaiting each new video! Thank you again for all that you share with us!!
My pleasure, I haven't watched Marion's Wednesday video yet, hope to find time tomorrow, she is so lovely ❤️
Dear Kathrin, I was so exaited to see whot is coming out. Lowe your work, thank you❤
I enjoyed this sooo much. I have always used vinegar and now need to try tea. So excited! 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
Wonderful results! I have rust dyed fabric before but never paper. Will have to try. Thank you so much for the tutorial!❤❤❤
They are all delicious! I haven’t done much with my dye pot this past year but I will get back to it soon.
Thank you for the great tutorial - everyone has their own twist on things ,always something to be learned.
Beauuuuutiful! Thanks so much for sharing the entire process with us. Will now be on the look-out for rusty bits.
Thank you so much for a really useful video. Using the back of the fabric after tea dying was surprising. So am now going to go through my stash hidden away and not used, exciting process. Am going to try dyeing with my plants from the garden. Au revoir. Anne
Love it! Beautiful. Thanks so much.
They are fantastic I’m liking them with the tea and coffee more than the vinegar ❤
Wow love this. I enjoyed every bit of your dyeing. Thank you for sharing.
Fantastic results, thanks for sharing the process with us. Love your channel!
Thank you Claire ♥️
I really enjoyed that!! And I will definitely have a go at dying paper when temperatures get a bit warmer. Tea and cloth are not new to me. I save my used teabags and throw them in a tin with some damp cloth pieces. And after a day or 2 rinse and dry the cloth. Herbal, black, green or rooibos all leave different tones.
Love your work, thank you for showing us all the pretties!!❤
👏👏👏👏 Amazing! The papers are absolutely beautiful. The old apron is wonderful. I really want to try this but may have to wait until spring so I can find some rusty things from under the snow. I will see what my husband has in his stash of tools etc. Thank you for showing us how to do this process. I’ve watched other rust printing videos but none with such wonderful results. Going to try some tea dying now.
I enjoyed every bit of it!!
Definitely going to have to find some rusty bits and give this a try.
Beautiful results!
Oh MY!!! ❤❤❤
I absolutely love it all, but my favorites are the papers and the pinafore with the rust pieces.
I can’t even get my sliding door open to the backyard because of all our snow, but I will be putting a bowl of little “bits ‘n bobs” out to age and rust so, come summer, I have something to alter fabric.
I’ll have to go thrift shopping to see if I can get some older fabrics.
Thank you for sharing your techniques to knock back the colors. I’m thinking of taking my 2 meditation scrolls off the spool and tea dying them to tie the fabrics in a little more.
lovely to tea dye your scrolls, I like to dye or print stitched pieces, it's also a good exercise in letting go a little of control. Maybe it will be one of the weekly projects 😉
Beautiful results! 💙
I do tea and rust dying but never the two together. Wonderful results! Also did not know about using baking soda to neutralize after. Thank you!
So very beautiful!
Absolutely beautiful 😍
I loved the results you got without using simple household ingredients. I need to hunt out rusty objects. I especially love the round shapes, some of those would make fabulous moons 🌚
yes, I have used them as resists in my indigo vat to that effect ♥️
I feel your joy at this creative process. Fun. This is definitely a rabbit hole I’ll be going down.
INSPIRED Indeed…..I will try to find the “rabbit hole” to try and star simple……Yes Bring on the Wonky Log Cabin project……early morning coffee here in the PNW is so much finer with You and Your Chums /Mates as I have heard them called across the pond…..
Ooo, they’re lovely! (Clapping) 😂
😁
❤ great results, I can't wait to try the rust and tea. I've done fabric rust dying with vinegar with good results, so keen to try rust and tea. Thank you for your fantastic videos.
What wonderful results. In particular I liked the papers. I have tea and coffee dyed papers before but the results from adding rust, salt etc are fabulous. I have to try this! I tea dyed some bright fabric as a result of part 1 and am pleased with the results. You inspire me and thank you for these wonderful videos.
Wonderful, so pleased you liked your results 😊
This has been amazing thanks
Loved these videos, thank you so much. I was oooohhhhing and ahhhhhing at all the results. Awesome-sauce
I hope you don’t find this insulting but I have to rewatch your videos several times….as I keep falling asleep, your voice is so soothing to me. I usually watch when I first lay down at night. lol Now if I can’t fall asleep I’ll put your videos on. On the good side of that is you’re getting more views. I really do enjoy your content and your voice chatting away, keep it up! 💜
😂 not at all! In future I will say 'wake up Cheryl ' every 15 minutes or so! 😁❤️
Love it!
Wonderful! Thank you! 🐞
I make handmade paper. I’ve ironed hung and all sorts of things to make flat paper. The best method I’ve found is to press them under anything heavy.
I’m catching up since only found you recently. Thank you. This was so exciting. Loved the muted tones of those white background fabrics. Will have to see if I can find some rusty things. I’m from Brisbane Australia by the way. Have been watching the wonky log cabins so now I know the ‘background’. 😂
Hello and welcome. Happy hunting for rusty things 😁❤️
Bello,bello,bello... alucinante!!!...he guardado muchas metales oxidados, ahora me atreveré a hacer algo así... Gracias por compartir ❤Saludos desde 🇨🇱
Good Morning🌝
Good morning 😁
I have tried a little rust dying with vinegar - but I think this looks a much nicer effect. I will have to try it. Thank You
I know you were a bit concerned that we might not be interested in this project because it's not slow stitching, but I was thrilled to see both your process and end product for this project. Everything turned out lovely. Do you have any plans on doing a similar video for eco printing? I would love to see it if you did.
When you mentioned the difference between the colors when using tea versus vinegar for rust dying, it made me curious what other acids might do to the colors. Would the colors be different if you tried lactic, malic, tartaric, or citric acid, I wonder?
You mentioned that if a piece was too dark after drying out that you would do other things to it, but didn't elaborate. What kinds of things do you like to do in that event? I'd be tempted to crumple it into interesting patterns and then leave it out in sunlight for a few days to try sun bleaching it.
I found the before and after comparisons of color to be rather inspiring. It might be nice to piece them together in a crazy quilt style or even to use an undyed piece to as a patch for a dyed piece to give the impression of new fabric being used to mend an old garment.
hello, I am so happy with the response, for me it's such an important part of my slowstitch practice so pleased you liked it. I will do ecoprinting online at one point but maybe not here on TH-cam, I'll see. I will certainly announce it here though. I haven't tried other acids, interesting question. I have some shrivelled up lemons in the fruit bowl so maybe I'll give those a go. For doing more to a piece, I meant if it was too pale, then I would repeat the process or ecoprint. I love dark pieces so that wouldn't bother me. ♥️
You had me wondering if those were special gloves for dying projects with the middle and ring finger together. You are beyond enlightening 😉
Dying? Dyeing? Applied coloration?
Dyeing ... 😉 dying is something we don't want to do for a very long time, too much to do first. 😁
PS the gloves are just regular gloves, I think I tried to put one on the wrong way round 🤣
Thank you, amazing. 😊
Bravo ! Super on peut teinter les pages avec des pièces rouilles et trempé avec du thé et même des tissus comme vieilli et vintage ❤❤
Those rusty washers could make a whole new solar system! I absolutely love this process...have you ever buried bundles in the garden/soil/compost?
Yes... There are about a dozen in our woods at the moment 😉❤️
@@k3n.clothtales but can you remember where you've hidden them 😉
Yes, also I have photos of each place in case I forget 😉
Thanks for the brilliant and inspirational tutorial! Is there a video or a course of you doing eco dyeing for fabrics? I’d love to see that as I love all the eco dyed fabrics you’ve been using in your projects ❤
Thank you Katia, there will be an ecoprinting online course at one point, probably in my summer. Not sure where or how yet but I will certainly announce it here ❤️
Good advice re rainwater or eco wash @31.34 you think of everything k3n 🎉
Thank you 😊
Спасибо Вы проделали огромную работу показать как это делать! Я жду времени ,когда у меня будет возможность собрать ржавые вещи и заняться этим ,но пока только чай. С наилучшими пожеланиями!🤩🌺🌻🏵
If you have a magnet handy, you could pass it over the papers to remove the pins without worrying about getting impaled on them.
Good idea 😁♥️
Thanks!
Thank you so much Candace thank is super kind of you ❤️🥰🥰
when you peeled back that cloth without your gloves I made a noise! (grin)
😂 I was very naughty!
Great ideas. May I suggest a circular saw blade? An especially exaggeratedly toothed one.
Oh yes, we actually have one, attached to the table saw that we use to cut firewood. I eye it longingly every time my husband takes it off to be sharpened. When it finally needs replacing, it will be mine 😂❤️
This is amazing! I have loved seeing your died papers and fabric. Now I know how to do them for me!!
When you’re drying the papers they don’t mold??
❤
Beth B in Sarasota, Florida
@@Greenilady13 hi Beth, no if properly processed as per this video they are fine. I have papers ten years old plus, still the same as the day I printed them. ❤️
@@Greenilady13 ps I see you are in Florida, so high humidity. Be sure to dry them somewhere warm and dry, like a hot cupboard. Or sometimes I put them in the oven after I have used it to cook (turned off) to dry them. ❤️
Thank you! Great idea about putting in warm oven. We are air conditioned during the hot months but still worry about the humidity. Can’t wait to try this method. ❤
Beth B
Confession time - I do iron my papers 🫢
😂 well, you're allowed! 😁
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Amazing!
Hi, Kathryn! Yes, now I know what you mean with the more orangey look with vinegar. I actually love orange and I even love bright orange, I wear it a lot, that’s why I always love the results with vinegar. However, I really loved this way too, so I will definitely try this one, because I like both! I like bright colours and more muted ones, so I get satisfied very easily 😆
Have you ever tried dyeing with bleach?
On another note, in what saving water is concerned, my grandmother already worried about that in the 70s and 80s when we didn’t hear about global warming. We had a kind of a fountain and a public place to wash and she would go there to wash our clothes. My mother would go so furious 😂, “it seems we don’t have a washing machine”, she would say😂, but my grandmother went there anyway and she didn’t care. Then with progress that disappeared and then we moved house and, well, in the city it’s difficult to find a place like that.
Thanks for the company 🩷🩵🧡💜💛♥️🤎🤍💙💚🤗😘
hi Alexandra, love the sound of your Grandmother 😁 here in France many towns and villages still have the old 'lavoirs' but I don't think anyone uses them anymore, sadly. 😉 I don't buy or use bleach at all so no, I haven't used it for dyeing. ♥️
