    This is a pretty solid little workbench. While once you figure out how it comes together, it is physically Easy to assemble th-cam.com/users/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh by yourself. But the diagrams explaining the steps are really pretty bad. I could not get the handle pins in all the way despite multiple attempts, so I just used a screw I had on hand for the 2nd handle. I could not get the first pin in further or pull it back out. You are supposed to hammer it in, but I had no leverage and the handle is plastic and I did not want to risk breaking it. I will get a lot of use out of the bench because of the convenient size and height. It does fold up nicely for storage. They even explain how to fold it so you don't get pinched...that is important!

    I had built something like this but your ideas solve so many of the issues I encountered. Great video. It will be a big help when I rebuild. I agree with not using the melamine. I made my top out of MDF and shellaced it. It has held up well.

    Great build! Nice job editing, explaining the steps you took, mistakes made & how to avoid them, safety tips on the how & why you used the hoist, etc. I got back into woodworking after I retired and am kind of gimpy. Ideas like the hoist will help keep me from screwing my self up further and likely extend the time I will be able to keep doing projects. (That is if I don’t kill my self installing the hoist ;).

    When you're putting your work table away,as soon as you get the legs off the floor, you can take the stretcher off the legs. Now it's not in the way when pinning the table to the wall.

    Great build man. Wish I had the wall space for one. Love that you show your mistakes so we can learn from them too! Wish more youtubers did.
    Good to see you're getting more tools. I bought the same planer about a month ago and love it, still working on reducing the snipe though. From what I hear that model is bad for that. Wish I had the router you just got, looks like a nice one.
    You're alot like me when building something, even for yourself, strive for perfection. But don't beat yourself up over the little mistakes, nothing's perfect, especially when it's handmade. Turned out great. Can't wait for another video! Keep building!

    • @WoodNerds
      @WoodNerds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re the man Tregg! Thanks for saying that. The router is awesome, can’t believe I waited so long for one as well as the planer. I’ll plane some wood for almost no reason other than to smooth it out. Mine doesn’t snipe enough for me to really notice honestly. I bet if I was to sand it for a few seconds on each side I probably wouldn’t be able to tell at all. I am using pine though so maybe that’s the reason why. Thanks for watching man I appreciate it!

      @@WoodNerds Yeah, I should have got a planer years ago...now I just wish I had the room/money for a nice industrial 20". Hard to work with live edge salads when you're limited to 13". I need to find someone in my area (Fort Worth Texas) with a big planer that I could pay to run some slabs through.

    • @WoodNerds
      @WoodNerds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same here man. I haven’t done much work with slabs yet but I could definitely see how much trouble that would be. Could make a router sled and get **similar** results. I’ve heard of people paying lumber yards etc. to mill large projects for them. Seems to be fairly cheap too.

    Hey, I like this! I need to have a large cutting table for my sewing room but the room is too small for the table to be there all the time. This is a very neat version of a foldable, sturdy worktable and since mine will be minimum 90cm wide your idea triggered my own idea of block and tackle (yes, I'm a sailor) to be able to hoist it to the wall. I'm in Sweden by the way :)

    Im planning on building this very soon! A couple questions…. Is 2 pieces of melamine necessary? Im wondering how flat the table is? I’m contemplating making a torsion box. Do you think that is needed? Thanks for the input

    • @WoodNerds
      @WoodNerds  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man! A torsion box top would definitely be better and that method means a dead flat surface. I used two melamine sheets to help keep the top rigid and added a center apron (not sure if that’s the correct term) but it still sags ever so slightly. I think for my next iteration of this I might do a torsion box so I can clamp glue ups to it and know it’s perfectly flat.

    Fantastic workbench!!! I am planning my workbench as I am just getting into woodworking. I am thinking of a laminated top with two layers of 3/4 inch MDF sandwiched between two layers of 3/4 inch plywood. The reason for the thick top, in addition to stability, is that I plan on using a combination of dogholes and t-track. Am I over-engineering the top? I would greatly appreciate your thoughts. If I do go ahead with the thick top, would I need additional support for hanging the bench on the garage wall? Thank you in advance for your help. Have a great day and stay safe!

    • @WoodNerds
      @WoodNerds  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man! It’s been an awesome addition to my shop. I think that is overkill personally. It’s pretty solid and crazy heavy with two sheets (although melamine is a little heavier than plywood). If you’re really going to be pounding on it then three should be good. I would probably consider a straight bar through or additional support on the inside of the legs where they pivot. I’d also add an additional leg block for stability. I don’t have issues with mine really (there is a minor wobble if I am pushing in a certain direction). With a heavier top I imagine that would be less, however, it will probably be more stressful on the aprons.

    Why did you use two pieces for your top and if you did this over would you use two 3/5 in plywood or one 3/5 inch plywood. I was going to use one, but if you think two is better (stronger), I'll use two. My concern is the weight of the bench with over 150 lbs of plywood alone , not counting the weight of the legs and braces.
    What is the total weight of the build overall?
    Great build!!!

    • @WoodNerds
      @WoodNerds  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thanks man!
      So two pieces are needed if you’re routing the T Track out. Otherwise you’ll only be left with a small amount of material in those areas, making your top extremely weak!
      The weight when building is definitely a concern but if you have help it’s not that bad, afterwards it’s nice because it aids the overall stability of a the bench when you work with it. It has to be around the 200 lbs range.
      Using regular plywood instead will save some weight (melamine is a little heavier than plywood I believe).
      This build was worth it to me. I love this bench. Next time you have a buddy over, you get to set it up and hoist it down. I used mine as an out feed table when cutting some drawers and mdf the other day.. worked like a dream.

    Great to see this concept working. This is what I’m thinking about doing for my Cnc machine table. Is there any twisting or movement. I’m planning on building a torsion box to help. Mine is going to have to fold the other way, with the bottom against the wall because of the carriages. Can you see an issue with this idea? Apart from the weight I’d have to hold initially.

    • @WoodNerds
      @WoodNerds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Matt! That’s an awesome idea! I’d really have to work out the mechanics of that to try to comment. You could also use a lift and pulleys to lift it straight up. There is minimal movement or twisting, although I’ve noticed a little bit of a downward bow in the middle of the table, but I think a center stretcher would help keep that in check (might add one myself).

    I just found your channel a few days ago while I was looking for a garage work bench/ storage system.. I've now watched almost all of your videos.. Awesome! I can appreciate that you don't have "contractor grade" tools like myself and the average DIYer - Harbor Freight miter saw, Ryobi tools, etc.. How has that miter saw been by the way? It's next on my list.. Keep the videos coming.. I'll keep watching them. Also, Nice 2nd gen Tacoma - Do I see a high clearance rear bumper? You wheel? Cheers, man!

    • @WoodNerds
      @WoodNerds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Matt! I appreciate that man! The tools I have now brought me a long way. I think it’s time to start upgrading. I’ve recently noticed the miter saw deflects enough to be frustrating. Also, I’ve noticed on mine the positive stops for angles is off. Thinking about a dewalt or MAYBE the Hercules miter from harbor freight (I’ve heard good things for the price). My table saw also has issues. Thinking about getting serious and buying a saw stop at some point. I try to be very safety conscious but have heard stories where kickback takes a few fingers off. They are crazy expensive but with the amount of time I plan on putting behind that saw I think it’s worth it to know my fingers are safe haha.
      I’ve got a few good videos in the works, pretty stoked about these ones.
      Thanks! I love my truck! Wish I had more time to take her out and build on her more. Been super busy. How about you? Have a truck?

    • @mattroy6204
      @mattroy6204 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WoodNerds Thanks for the advice! I'll look closer at the miter saw options.. Mine would be for occasional use - nothing much at all. My dad has a great work shop that I use with his guidance - built a nice book case for my 3 year old's bedroom - stuff like that. It's a blast and am starting to build my own workshop. I suppose the amount you use it, it's worth it to spend the extra money.
      As for the truck - I do! On my second Tacoma - currently have a 2018 TRD off road that I've done a bunch to. I go camping in remote places so it's on King Coilovers, roof top tent, 33's, etc.. It's the real money pit to be honest!
