      @@monetcafe Susan, I told Karen M the same thing about her videos: you talk because you are a teacher. By explaining to us your thinking you are scaffolding --building us a scaffold from your knowledge we can climb on-- and it is a very powerful teaching tool. I have an MAT and that was one of the first things I learned in teacher's college in my graduate program. Keep talking, your students appreciate what you have to say.--Thom

    I started by looking up one of your videos that was on a subject that related to what I was currently painting, to play in the background while painting. Then, not wanting to touch my computer with pastel covered hands, just let it keep playing on whatever other random videos on your channel after that. Though the followup videos didn't relate to what I was painting, and though I only occasionally looked away from my painting to check the screen, I found that just listening to you describing your process was wonderful to keep me in a painter's brain. I hadn't planned on painting so long today, but just listening was inspiring.
    Disclaimer: When I'm not in the middle of a painting myself I do actually WATCH your videos, not just listen. And I LOVE watching them. Just thought I'd better put that out there to be sure no one misunderstood my comment that I found even just listening while painting inspiring.

    Hey susan i looked up the reason for the dark line on the horizon of ocean. I was curious also. The answer is were the land drops off making water deep.. there is no land close to the surface to reflect the light back up. Not sleeping at night?? Try singing hyms ( in your head so you dont wake up the one sleeping next to you😅) to the Father and to the Son. Its what i do and it relaxes the my brain in focusing on Him.
    I love the idea of these cute little paintings and tell Jackson hes cute too😂

    this is going to seem like a stupid question but what does it feel like using the pastels? i've never used them. it seems like it would be like chalk on a blackboard. the thought sends chills down my spine. really hooping it isn't like that at all.

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha ha... I've actually heard that from others, and fortunately, no... it's not the same consistency as chalk. Quality pastels are much softer and buttery. There can be a bit of scratching sound if you are working on a sanded surface, but it's not the same sound as chalk on a blackboard. ;) Great question.

    Love it! And thanks for sharing your story! I've been thrilled to find excellent instructors on Patreon like you Susan! My friends all remark how quickly I'm learning. Of course I can't help but think where I'd be if I'd had this level of instruction 23 years ago when I first discovered pastels...oh well, there's no time like the present right?! Love love love

      Great question Deborah, and one I get all the time. This is a lesson from a 4 part series I have here on TH-cam call "Pastel 101". In this part I go over the reasons artists use underpaintings. Hope it helps!th-cam.com/video/SJ3crLW8lis/w-d-xo.html

    How do you seal this medium so it doesn't drip

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Raye, I never spray fixative on my final pastel paintings because it darkens the painting. I sometimes use fixative during the working process, however, to darken and area or add a bit more grit by spraying fixative in specific areas. The workable fixative I use is Blaire Low Odor Fixative.
      To protect my final painting for shipping or storing, I place them in a clear plastic bag I get from www.clearbags.com. I buy the bags a bit larger than standard sizes so I will have room for the painting and a piece of foamcore board cut to the size of the painting. Here is a video of my process:th-cam.com/video/4XD4SezFyBg/w-d-xo.html&t=209s

    Susan, take care and rest well. I'd some anxiety issues and can't sleep at night a few years ago. Recommendation from psychologist : 1. Try some slow and deep breathing exercises before sleep. 2. Try some exercises, too. (I think when one is physically tired, one will sleep better =) 3. Do something you enjoy, just for fun. For me, art is therapy, it is healing.
