After spotting at Lancaster somewhat 220 miles away from here i headed down on Virgin Trains First Class to Euston and across to Paddington to catch the famous HST's depart for the very last times. There were 4 that were going, 1 to Plymouth, 1 to Cheltenham Spa, 1 to Hereford and the final one to depart was to Taunton. This lead loads of people to tears shortly after the final had gone, most understandably so. HST's have operated from Paddington for years now, to see them go is a real shame. Quite a few famous youtubers had got on the final one, Geoff Marshall to name one.

On my first visit to England, in 1977, my first HST run was to Bath Spa for a visit, and return. To say that I was impressed is a massive understatement. Leter visits involved the ECML before electrification.

You are lucky, Bruce. On my travels on the UK railway system in the 70/80/90 2000s I never got to ride the HST125. All I have are video memories and about 15 Hornby 00 Train Packs of the HST125 in various liveries - most never run. I guess I'm afflicted by that strange passion of 'possession', as any collector knows. The argument will still hold forth on the Valenta versus the MTU. The British passion for quirkiness up against Germanic cool efficiencies. We Brits' could not give a toss for economics when it comes to the thrill of the screaming Paxman reverberating through our ears and that indefinable thumping within the chest as a Valenta HST125 went whizzing past. Take care, Bill.

While the Intercity 125 will be phased out of long distance Intercity services, GWR are retaining some of their sets to form some 4 car “short castle” sets for regional services in the west of England. Well that’s what I was told anyway.

    Sad day indeed.
The Hitachi plastic fantastics have taken over.
Just as the IC125’s took over from the 50’s and 47’s in the late 70’s.
The Hitachi units have no character. And never will have any.
    Soulless. Bland. Generic. Crap.

I remember being in Paddington on October 11, 1976 photographing HSTs in their first week of regular service. I was able to get shots of one of the prototype trainsets, as well as several of the production sets. And several tracks over was an aging Class 52 "Western" diesel-hydraulic with a set of Mark I stock. Now the HSTs are leaving the stage, making room for the 800-series Azuma trains. History marches on, in railroading as in everything else...

Cracking video, Richard. Love the HST’s, built in my home town of Crewe. These power cars have done starship miles, a testament to their design and build. Somehow I can’t see many of the modern units lasting as long. Hopefully these HST’s will once again be cascaded down to a new location. The ScotRail ones look good-as-new in their new livery and should be around for many years to come.

Why are my eyes getting teary ? perhaps because as a small boy in the 70's a class mate shouted , look miss at that strange looking train, which was on test outside our school in Bedminster Bristol on a red light, waiting to go into Temple meads , we were all aloud to rush to window and stare at this beautiful train. And from that day we've been accustomed to seeing this amazing train, where every you are in Britain, ... been a national treasure. ... perhaps that's why ? thanks for the great vid.I will never forget those horns "

Sad to see, have fond memories of trekking from Australia to visit family in Cornwall from the early 1980s and fronting up at Paddington to get the Cornish Riviera to Plymouth, there would always be a couple of these beast would be sitting idling, what fab sound. Then to experience the delight of wizzing through the English countryside at such a speed.....in those days in Australia, you never considered trains as a viable form of transport......even today I doubt if any reach more than 60mph....... thanks for the posting

I was only 7 at the time. 40 odd years, that's some miles that is and a fair testomany to the engineering in the 70's, i have to tip my hat to them they've faired better than i have. Oh the days of BR blue when we had a good railway system.

Hi Richard, I've noticed you come to the Ipswich area quite a lot, I'm not sure if you know that the new bi-directional double track section and crossover at Trimley is due to be connected next weekend over the bank holiday. There are only 2 freightliners scheduled for Friday (24th), then nothing on Sat, Sun, Mon Tues, with normal running due to start on Wednesday 29th. No doubt they will heavily loaded and it will make for some interesting footage. I'm not sure if this is correct but I've heard this will increase the capacity to 54 trains per day.

why were some still in older paint schemes, like the IC Swallow and original IC 125 paint? were they just never repainted, or were they deliberately kept in that scheme as a "heritage" locomotive?

Very sad. I will miss them terribly. Comfortable and it felt like travelling in style. The new Hitachi fleet i cant stand. Feels like a soul less commuter train and no buffet car, just a trolley :(

So the thing is; what next? Are they being withdrawn, or are they transferring to other companies (e.g. 'ScotRail' or 'South Western Railway')? Tbh, shorter 4 or 6 car 43's would be great on the WoEML.

Praying that Via Rail will go through with their proposal of turning HST's into Canada's 1st high speed trainsets, it will make sure these units don't go away for good. Long live class 43!

So sad to see the HSTs go! I'm really hoping to see the last ever HST on the 1st of June, it will be a very tragic & special event!

I see a lot of comments about how people will miss them, but the truth is this is just the cycle of life. I remember the HST's coming into service and all the wonderful locomotives that they replaced. At that time people hated them as they killed the Deltics and the last of the Western's. Likewise people hated those classes when they were introduced because of the steam engines they replaced, and so on. One day people will lament the class 800 as they are replaced by something else. Hard to believe that they have been around for so long, especially as my father was involved with these trains entering service. God I feel old...

Do you think it would have been better if the first of 4 left on platform 4 and counted down the platforms 4-3-2-1 and the last departs from platform one (the best platform)

I am a trainspotter from Romania, and in June 2012 i came in England and went to Plymouth from Paddington in an HST. I knew about them from train documentary and i was completly in love with them. I got to see them running, to travel in it and got to see the prototype as well in York. A small question. They are gone for ever from service, or just some of them?

Radu Daniel They’re not gone. Many are still in use elsewhere in England, and ScotRail are refurbishing them for the inter-city routes in Scotland - they’re fitting sliding doors and fitting new interiors. They look great. Come back and see them in Scotland some time - we’ll be delighted to see you!
