  • There are some diet and behavioral differences among Grasskeet varieties. Bourke's Parakeets are likely the most different from the others. Using our own flock, this video compares Bourke's Parakeets to Scarlet-chested Parakeets, also called Splendids.

    You are the reason that I have bourkes and splendids. I am a student of yours via your book and videos.

    I have had only budgies, a total of 9, throughout my life. Only a few years ago, had I gone to my first and only bird expo ( small one but had a great time). There I saw a the most beautiful parakeets which were the rosey bourkes. In particular the Rubino and Creamino bourkes caught my eye. I just love the red eyes, pink and yellow feathers. I know they are very quiet and not too active like the budgies but what is the lifespan of the Rubino and Creamino mutations? With budgies, I was told that the Lutinos have a shorter lifespan than the normal or even the other other mutations. I had a lutino budgie which lived to a few months shy of 10 years and was told that was unusual and we must have taken extra good care of her.
    I love your flock of birds and the splendid parakeets are so rich in colors that it reminds me of the gouldian finch’s colors. I believe you and me both have very similar personalities due to our love for parakeets and we are both very soft spoken and calm in nature. Birds like humans that are not high strung.
    Is one gender more aggressive like bitters and chewers? Is one gender more friendly with their owners if only one bourke is kept? Or should bourkes be always kept in pairs even if the owner offers lots of toys and attention? If need to be in pairs and don’t want any breeding to occur, does 2 males work or 2 females get along better in one cage?

      Bourke's Parakeet lifespans are quite a bit longer than Budgies. A few now and then can live into their 20's. However, low teens are more likely. As for Budgies, our two I remember best are a blue Budgie names Skybird and a companion all-white budgie we named Snowbird. Skybird was five when we got Snowbird. A year later at age six, he had a stroke and died. We always thought Snowbird wore him out. She surprised us by living to be 12 !!! Snowbird resided in our kitchen and was close to us all the time, but we never got another Budgie after her. We had cockatiels and a variety of finches before discovering Bourkes, and we've never looked back. They are our all-time favorites. It seems likely that the Normal wild-color would be the healthiest, but so far we've not seen any marked difference in lifespan for our Rosies, Lutino's, or Creams, with or without red eyes. We have some Rosies and two red-eyed opaline fallows in their teens who are all healthy.

    Hi. How noisy they are? I know that Bourne parakeets are very quiet, but what about splendid parakeets? Thanks

    • @RosieBirds
      @RosieBirds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They don't have the pretty songs that Bourke's have, but they're not any noisier. The males have a call that sounds to me like opening a squeaky gate. It's not unpleasant, but not especially pretty either. However, an acquaintance who was hard of hearing could hear his Splendid male when he was unable to hear most of his other birds. The Splendid wasn't loud, just a different pitch. The hens are even quieter than Bourke hens.

      I had adopted a turquoisine splendid, i believe a female, and she would give a loud, longish one-note whistle as her call. My rosy male sings his own bourkes tunes, tunes he heard me play or whistling songs i make up to sing to him. He will sing it to the wild birds in the tree next to the window, or to me, or softly to himself, even if
      Im sitting 4ft away.

    Hi, Aside from Bourke's, what available grass keets of similar size are available in the market (I currently have a Bourke, Turquoisine and Splendid....I can only acquire another 2). I only take males, as i don't want babies and I just want hand-fed pets. What other neophema would you recommend? They are all caged separately but allowed playtime in my large indoor playroom / balcony that is 16 feet long, 6 feet wide and 10 ft high.

      Susan Kruger of Lovely Linnie Aviary has wonderful hand fed Lineolated Parakeets. They are slightly larger than your other grasskeets, but gentle and get along well with others. They are also terrific mimics and hang upside down like parrots. They are a bit messier, but loads of fun. I love them.

    Hi, what is the difference in their personality? I have been told that Splendids are rougher than Bourkes , is that true?

    • @RosieBirds
      @RosieBirds  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you mean rougher with other birds? They are not as easily tamed and don't stay as tame as Bourkes. We had a male once who plucked his hen, but he was fine with their offspring. Male Splendids can be mean to other male Splendids and once had a male injured by his two brothers because we didn't get them separated early enough. Have to admit that Bourkes are easier birds to raise or care for.

    Hi i have another question for you if you don,t mind can i put 2 pairs of this parakeets together in 1 cage the other one i don,t think has a-fertile egg yet . I left the 1 egg in tge nest . I just to know if its ok to put them together. Thanks a lot

    • @RosieBirds
      @RosieBirds  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That depends on how large the cage is. Sometimes one hen will be dominant over the other and could injure her. The same is possible with males, but less likely. Bourkes that are raised together, and already know each other, are more likely to get along. Two sisters sometimes do fine together; however, I've seen mothers chase their daughters away. You can safely house pairs in an aviary that is large enough that they have plenty of space and can escape if chased or challenged. A small cage could invite trouble. Bourkes need flying space, even if there are only two of them.

    • @RosieBirds
      @RosieBirds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@oscarlandicho3828 That size cage is probably fine for two pairs, especially if they are young. If you want to switch partners, some birds accept it and others do not. You'd have to try it and see what happens.

    Hi I have a question, can a female Turquoisine Grass Parakeet mate with a male rosie bourke?

    • @RosieBirds
      @RosieBirds  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope! Bourke's can only reproduce with another Bourke's. Turquoisines can mate with Splendid Parakeets. Those two are both Genus Neophema. Bourke's are Genus Neopsephotus bourkii. Bourke's and Budgies (Melopsitticus) each have their own Genus classification that's not shared with any other variety of bird.

    • @RosieBirds
      @RosieBirds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't recommend putting two Rubino's together. You can have healthy babies by putting a Rubino with a Rosy, or even a Normal. But, mating two "ino" birds together, is risky to their offspring. Right now, all our hens are resting. We will have many babies starting the end of May, 2021. You can write to us for more information next Spring and we will let you know if we have Rubino's available. Our email is: rosie.birds@gmail.com

      @@oscarlandicho3828 A Bourke's coloration can't identify their sex (except for the normal, wild color). A male Bourke that displays can show you he's a male. I have a TH-cam video that shows male display behavior. If you click on my name above "Rosie Bird" and choose "all videos" you should be able to find it. Also, I highly recommend a copy of my book. Hello, Can you do a video or tell me who Can i tell the gender of a Rosy bourke parakeet? Thank you

    • @RosieBirds
      @RosieBirds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Male display behavior can help. Below is a link to my video about that. With Rosy Bourkes, however, it's often necessary to do a DNA test with an avian laboratory. Sometimes, but not always, hens will have darker faces than males, and when several months old will sometimes lean forward, tails in the air, and cheep. That's a mating ritual done by hens, but I've seen mated males perform the same ritual. Have yet to see a hen do a male display though, so it is pretty reliable. Here is a link to it: th-cam.com/video/vgT2CX_nssI/w-d-xo.html
