Baby Bourke's Parakeet Foot Color to Identify Splits? Plus Visit All Our Pairs.

Speculating on the differences in our Baby Bourke's foot colors and whether they can tell us something about the birds themselves. For instance, do a Rosy's pink feet with black toenails instead of clear indicate she's split to Normal? Seems likely, just as foot specifics in other Bourkes might also indicate something. It is worth more investigation. (FYI: I used a new Video Program to make thi...

    Had my male bourke for 5 weeks, he was so shy, now he will take food from my hand and enjoy a gentle head & neck scritch. He has come out of his shell so wonderfully. But still wary of letting him out, as he escaped on the1st day and was in a panic, he has shown no sign of trying to escape again. He is calm when I clean his cage,and he enjoys hanging upside down occasionally. All in all he is doing splendidly.

    How do we get a handfed baby if we're located in AZ 🏜️? Also I have your book good read. If I am understanding genetics 🧬 if mom is Opaline and Dad is normal and the three baby's come out opaline then they are all males ?

    • @RosieBirds
      @RosieBirds 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you write to my email I can elaborate. It is rosie.birds@gmail.com Are you talking about Opaline Fallow? If so, it's my understanding that both parents have to carry that gene so that babies could be either sex. If you mean an Opaline Rosy (dark eyes vs. red eyes), then your premise is correct. If they are all Rosies like Mom they should be males ... However, if their dad carries the gene for Rosy ... I'd still DNA test them. ;-) That way you'll get verification that will help with future clutches too.

    Hi 👋 My names Katie, I am interested in being a parent to a Bourke parakeet and I got a male budgie named sky at home and he has me but I would like to get him a playmate to play with while I am busy so I am wondering two things Do you live in Australia 🇦🇺 ? And Do Bourke parakeets get along with budgies ?

    • @RosieBirds
      @RosieBirds 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Katie, It's not a good idea to put Budgies and Bourkes together because of their personality differences. Sometimes it works out okay, but more often a Budgie will bully the gentle, quiet Bourke. A serious injury can even result. You would be better off finding a Budgie hen for your guy. If you want a pair of Bourkes then put them in a different cage from the Budgie. Also, Budgies are more active and do a lot of climbing. Bourkes need to fly for exercise, so a wide cage is more important than a tall cage. Bourkes don't climb, they are fliers. There is too much to cover it all here. I highly recommend you get a copy of my book: www.amazon.com.au/Rosie-Birds-Guide-Small-Exotic/dp/198676348X/ Best of luck!

    What type of pellets do you feed your Bourkes?

    • @RosieBirds
      @RosieBirds 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't like pellets and don't use them. Our birds eat a fortified Budgie seed mix by Hagen. They also get assorted vegetables, like cooked corn, peas, green beans and carrots - whatever we are having for dinner works well. Also Fresh broccoli and kale are offered once or twice a week. Treats include Calif. Golden Spray Millet (not the old gray stuff sold in some stores) and Rice Chex Cereal (not wheat or corn chex, only Rice). Babies start out on the Millet and also a Nestling and Breeding formula that we buy from myparrotfood.com in Monroe, Oregon.

    I wish everyone could see these birds siblings that have been with me a few years. I put Gail's video on for them and they all fly to the phone and become so animated and happy chirping away and landing on the phone. They ADORE the sound of Gail's voice and yes, the oldest ones remember her just as much as the youngest! I'd bet they NEVER forget their momma Gail and I think they enjoy hearing their siblings too! The oldest male is trying to bring up food right now to feed these babies that he hears! That is the sweetest thing I have seen in a long time!

    I bought my first Bourke's Parakeet today at a bird show. I was looking for a hand fed parrotlett and found a little fallow hand fed Bourke's. His breeder was kind enough to tell me all about how sweet these little birds are, and I decided to bring him home. I'm trying to learn the colors. He looks very similar to the cream blue edged fallow boy you showed in either this video or the other one you taught us the colors in. I'm excited to see how bright his colors become.

    I just got a splendid pair, wild color male and a blue female. I work from home and have them in my office/ bedroom. They're vocalizations are really different from a Bourke. I live in Tucson Arizona, do you think they'll be OK if i keep them in my patio, that has shade all day. They'll have a swamp cooler and a mist system? I'm just worried they're not acclimated to living outside. I have no space else where in my home to keep them inside. What do you think?

    • @sinned2080
      @sinned2080 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      But the chirping is a little loud if you're on phone calls with patients, some of them have mentioned they can hear them. They didn't complain but I'm scared someone will

    • @RosieBirds
      @RosieBirds 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Australian birds are all at risk from cool drafts. Does Tucson have low temps at night like other desert areas do? They can acclimate to lower temps in the high 60's if there are no drafts, but I wouldn't put them where it gets any colder than that. High heat while in shade is less of a problem. If outside, are they enclosed where other animals cannot reach them or frighten them? One of our buyers left two birds in a cage hanging from a tree one afternoon and a neighbor's dog knocked it down and killed both birds. It wasn't even a cat, which would be more likely. Also, hawks or even Jays, can frighten the birds, causing them to crash around and injure themselves. Is the mist system something they can get into and away from if they want to? Or, does it act like a humidifier for room air? I hope this is helpful. I know our Splendid male, Glitter, whistles more often than the Bourkes and he likes to have me copy what he whistles and whistle back to him. It's kind of fun to do that. ;-)

    • @RosieBirds
      @RosieBirds 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've seen misinformation too. Bourke's live much longer than Budgies. They also mature more slowly, needing hand feeding longer and their bones are still growing up to two years of age. Several people have written to me about their Bourkes that were in their early 20's! My own have mostly lived into their high teens, and a few are there now. Hope they make it to their 20's. The oldest Budgie I ever had was 12 years old ... very old for a Budgie, but not for a Bourke's Parakeet.

    Hi Gail. I am curious... You mentioned that the baby with pink feet is split for Rosa, are its two siblings with dark feet also splits? Lyn

    • @RosieBirds
      @RosieBirds 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The baby with pink feet is definitely a Rosy. Might or might not be split to another color. The bird with the darkest feet is no doubt a Normal. The one with feet that are not quite as dark as the one with the darkest feet is a Normal, but only growing feathers will tell for sure. Because its feet are less dark than the other, I proposed that might be because it is split to another color, but no way to be certain at this stage. Sorry if it was confusing. Splits can only be guaranteed when, as an adult, they produce a different color that's like that of one of their parents.

    • @lynmontel1724
      @lynmontel1724 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Gail, you have explained it very well. Im curious because I have 3 young ones from a Rosie mum and Normal dad. They are each a little different but normal coloring. • @RosieBirds
      @RosieBirds 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is best NOT to put Budgies and Bourkes together because Budgies can be aggressive to more gentle Bourkes. It's better to get two of the same kind, either two Budgies or two Bourkes. BTW neither of them can interbreed with any other kind of bird except their own kind.

      She's already taught one little parakeet how to make soft bourke sounds like her and they made friends but she really misses her sister who passed away a few years ago.

      That's nice. No doubt she would love a companion. Bourkes are flock animals and happier when not living alone. People can't be present 24/7 like another bird can be. Smile.

    Hi Gail, thank you so much for all your informatives videos everytime i'm loocking for bourke informations it lead me toward one of your videos.i'm new to bourke and i just love them I adopted a couple and the female is a 1 year old rosie and the male a 2 year old fallow❤ they never had babies before but she just got 6 eggs and first egg was 29 days ago and last one 21 days ago..(i trowed 2 of them)then january 1 yesterday night i noticed a crack on one egg and this morning i could ear the baby in the box. The mom always in i even think there is some days she wont even come out and the dad go in often and stay a while. The mom just took a minute break not long ago so i rushed to take a look so there were one baby and i took a look and is crop was empty...sooo..how long after hatched the baby get is first meal from the parents...if they feed them..should i see something in is crop or as he is young they give less food and more liquid?... and how long can he survive without eating assuming he is born at least 12 hours ago... if i have to go get him i probably will have to scare her out of her box witch i never do so.becaus if i wait for her to get out to see what is going on he may not make it till then. But i dont want to traumatise the mom or something she is not hand fed and I must say she was a little grumpy when we first met when i brought her home she was even growling at me😅 If ever you would like to answer thank you❤

      Do you have email? It's easier to write detailed info. through email. Mine is: rosie.birds@gmail.com I can write back to you with lots more information and suggestions. Since this is their first clutch I'd let them try to raise them on their own. If a baby dies, they learn from that and should do better next time. Bourke hens go right back and lay another clutch immediately after their last clutch. After 3 clutches in one year, you should remove the nest box and do what you can to discourage a 4th clutch. Let them wait 8 months, resting, before starting over again the following year. Write to: rosie.birds@gmail.com

      They are known by BOTH names. Yes, they are also Scarlet-chested Parakeets, but I prefer the simpler name. They are also called Splendids. If you look at my other videos I refer to them with both names in other videos. th-cam.com/channels/nja_zyZnS_zHp7wksScpOw.htmlvideos

    Do you take all babies at once or do you sometimes take the younger ones later

    • @RosieBirds
      @RosieBirds 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Since four is a typical clutch size they are near the same ages. However, when Peaches hatched seven I did leave the three youngest until they were a little older. So, I've done it both ways, but most of the time I pull the whole clutch.

    How many CCs do you feed the babies when they are this young?

    • @RosieBirds
      @RosieBirds 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Others measure, but I don't. I feed until they appear full or want to quit eating. I feed gradually, little by little and let them eat naturally, not all at once as some people do. If you watch my other videos on hand feeding in one or two I show how very full good parent birds feed their offspring. They almost look like they will pop. I don't get them quite that full, but do fill them up. Too often people don't feed them enough. I feed gradually, little by little and let them eat naturally until they stop ... not all at once as some people do.

      @RosieBirds ah, ok I see! I have a new mama bird and she's rejecting one of the babies for some reason. I keep putting the baby back under her and she does feed it but I might have to take over feedings so I was curious. I wanna give the little one a fighting chance instead of letting it die. It'll be my first time feeding a baby bird so young

    Hi Gail! Can you tell me what exact food you use to mix with water and heat up a little to feed the baby Bourkies in the pipette? My 3 month old male is just having a really hard time with taming. He won’t step up. He loves my other Bourkies but he just is so afraid of us even though we are so so gentle with our Bourkies. I have very tame Bourkies but he just maybe needs some one on one food time? Would you suggest that?

    • @RosieBirds
      @RosieBirds 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Alexandria, Hand feeding a 3 month old bird is unlikely to change him. At 3 weeks of age and older they resist hand feeding. My adult birds that like the hand feeding formula were hand fed from about 2 weeks of age. My birds that were NOT hand fed don't eat the formula, they ignore it. I think your youngster will too. But, if you want to try it, we use Kaytee Exact Hand Feeding Formula. Be sure to buy it for small birds and not for large parrots. Follow package directions. I mix ours into boiling water and let it cool. It mixes better that way. Have you tried offering your bird treats in the hand while your other Bourkes are eating that way? Ours love rice cereal squares (like Rice Chex) crumbled in the hand. He isn't likely to take it right away. Offer a little bit in a dish so he learns how good it is, then offer it in the hand while your others are also eating it in your hand. He should eventually copy them. Good Luck!

    Hello Rosie, thanks for sharing theses beauty babies.. I have a couple with babies... so exciting!! but unfortunately today the male has flew away..I am devastated, it is so sad :( I am wondering if she will be able to go ahead alone with babies (who are 4 or 5 days).. what do you think? Is it possible? or maybe is better to put into the cage another male? Thanks in advance for your comments!

    • @RosieBirds
      @RosieBirds 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Do not put another male with her. That could be tragic. I hope you went after the father that flew away. Sometimes they tire and you can catch them. Watch for him. If he hears your other birds he might return to your area. Give your hen plenty of food. Maybe place spray millet into the nest with her so she can eat without leaving her babies. She will leave to defecate and can grab water then too. But, usually the male feeds her in the nest. Giving her food in there will increase the babies' chances of surviving. I hope she is used to you and won't panic and fly away too. If the box lid makes it possible for that to happen, put a towel or blanket over the box to cover the lid or door to keep it safe while you add food for her. Good luck. If she appears to be leaving the babies and they start to get cold, you can hand feed. We use Kaytee Exact Hand Feeding Formula and a glass eye dropper. See our videos on hand feeding. Don't hesitate to ask me any questions at: rosie.birds@gmail.com

      Thanks a lot for your comments, for the moment three babies are fine, the mom is self feeding good, leave the nest two or three times at day only few minutes. Iam controlling the babies crop and is not super big and full as your videos but seem are correct.
