  • @jesbair-hill

    The last episode of the final season when Don sobs on the phone to Peggy about breaking all his marriage vows and “scandalizing” his children … it becomes so clear that all Don ever wanted was a family. He never had genuine love or intimacy in his life (since his childhood was so dysfunctional) - he knew what a family was supposed to look like but never understood how to actually connect (because he’d never felt a connection to his mother or father). You can really tell by that final episode (especially the scene where he hugs the man in the support group who’s talking about wanting to connect to his wife and kids) that what he’s been desperately seeking all this time (from season 1 - season 7) is what he already had with Betty in the beginning. She truly loved him before he destroyed any trust they had between them. If he had been honest with her and been vulnerable and let his family really know him things would’ve turned out so differently. That’s the true tragedy of the series - he had the key to his own “fulfillment” and happiness” all along but he didn’t realize it until it was too late. It’s heartbreaking.

      Yes and let's give Betty credit for realizing that deficit in Don's life and values. She does try to bring family ties, joy and love and connection to him, and not only is Don's cooperation piecemeal and shockingly infrequent, but Don blames her for her unhappiness and sense of frustration. It takes a long time for Betty to finally "throw in the towel", because she had pledged "hang in there" and be a loving wife, she did believe that was an honorable and compelling calling.
      None of Betty's noticable immaturity was a very serious flaw given her age at the time and her circumstances. If she had had a more balanced marriage with a less seriously damaged husband she could have continued to grow into a fine and substantial woman. Remember most of the show happens before Betty is even into her 30's! The Betty at the end was who she was supposed to be, and what many women of her generation and other Bryn Mawr graduates, turned out to be!

      yes, definitely! I also think it's ironic (and tragic) that season 1 of the show, when Don and Betty are still married, focuses so much on Don trying to think of new ways to keep advertising for cigarettes... he'd be in charge of selling cigarettes to consumers, consumers like Betty... and Betty ended up getting lung cancer because of her smoking habit. in so many ways, Don killed her.

      There’s a scene in season 4 or 5 where Joan and Don are at the bar having a drink, and she indirectly describes him(or his behaviour toward Betty). One of the profound things Joan said was “Her only sin was that she became too familiar ” . I always thought that was Don’s problem-with all the women in his life-that when there was nothing exciting left to learn, he was on to the next one.

    their story reminds me of my parents. so sad for both of them. I can't help but feel bad for them, Don is a very damaged man.
    I've just started watching the show I've always putted it off because I was afraid it would bring out traumatic memories, but it's so well written I can't help but watch it. The characters are complex, fascinating and their brokenness is somehow enthralling to see. Also their exceptionally curated exterior is designed to control their image and life since they do not have control of their emotions, life and past. Unfortunately there is not enough diamonds or luxurious clothing to make up for the ache of their souls.

    What in the world! Why am I crying? I must say…
    Betty oscillated from a sympathetic character to someone really terrible and it was difficult to root for her sometimes. But now that I see her story arc laid out like that _she_ was the primary tragedy on Madmen, not Don. His good looks and wit carried him through life, and propelled his career. Betty had no chance of returning to her modeling career after having his 3 young kids and kept having to play submissive wife to powerful men. No wonder she took out her frustration in petty ways on others including her kids, neighbors, friends etc. Ripples of the psychological abuse she endured traveled wide.
    Henry seems like a decent guy for the most part. I hope she found happiness eventually. RIP Betty.

    when they said "now you wont get treatment because you love the tragedy", was it depicting betty as somewhat of a masochistic character, where she stayed with don and perhaps chose don because she felt there was some beauty to tragedy?

    • @sebastians7806
      @sebastians7806 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I don't think it's beauty in tragedy she's looking for, but more that her situation seems perfect from the outside yet upon immediate close examination we can see that she is very sad and unfulfilled. My interpretation is that a more obvious tragedy to outsiders and receiving an emotional response from them is what she's looking for. Betty always tries to aggravate people to solicit some kind of negative emotional response from them. Like Glen says about her, "just because you're sad, doesn't mean everyone has to be." She didn't choose Don for tragedy, she genuinely expected a good life, and it was all up to her to split up. But I do think Mad Men believes in finding the value through the experiences in your life only after they're long gone. Not to say that Betty and Don should have stayed together, I don't think they should have, but they experienced a lot together and it's hard not to feel deeply connected forever and there's immense beauty in that. Betty always acted angry and cold towards Don after they split up, but as Henry said, he's taking up too much space in her heart. Not necessarily love anymore mind you, but the infamous twinge in your heart. It's only when the awful and pitiable situation actually befalls her, cancer, that she is able to share her feelings with Don a little bit and have her emotions quelled. Now that she's actually in a terrible situation, she doesn't want others to feel bad for her, she wants to go back to how things were.
      Sorry for going off, I just really love this story.

    Betty and Don forever. Now I do think they could not function as a couple so I am glad Betty found Henry and Don, to a lesser extent , Megan (wasn't a fan of hers tbh). But at their best they were unstoppable. They were like a broken fairy tale, the Ken and The Barbie on top of the wedding cake who looked to be all about appearances but in the end truly did love each other but could just not make it work. I so wish they could have.

    I always fealt like Don and Betty were completely wrong for each other in some ways and completely right for each other in other ways. Their relationship was built on lies from both of them (Don more than Betty but both of them weren't completely honest with each other nonetheless). Yet, they both lied for similar reasons. They both hid their true personalities so they could be seen as the the all American working husband and the all American stay at home housewife. They both saw being those one dimensional figures as better than being their true selves because they didn't want to get ridiculed. I feel like if their relationship went a little differently they would've lasted.
