She pushed him on her to keep herself from wanting him. Then she vicariously enjoyed the affair while being able to righteously condemn them. It was also a way to control people to replace the lack of control she believes she has over her own life.
She didn't do it for that reason at all, IMO. She did it because she resented Sarah Beth talking about wanting an affair with a young man while acknowledging her decent, kind husband who she always knew how to please, because 'hes so easy to please'. Betty hated that Sarah Beth could be so flippant about potentially wrecking her perfectly fine marriage, all because she craved excitement and validation from a young, good looking man. Sarah Beth reminded her of Don and she wanted to teach her a lesson, to see would she be able to take the fall out from such a weak mistake.
THIS IS 100 FACTUAL Betty was very judgmental and couldn’t control don in the least. She lived through her friends…Betty was very manipulative and was punishing her friend but was projecting her resentment for don and his freedom to treat her the way he did. Two things can be true. Betty was mad at Don, but she was unable to take it out on him. Instead, she took it out on Sarah Beth. However, Sarah Beth has no one to blame but herself. They're both wrong, and they shouldn't be friends.
Because she never gets what she wants, she's never confident. Because she's never confident, she always sabotages others' relationships, out of jealousy
a youtube channel called the take actually said the same thing! They say she's child like in a way and reacts the way a child would- and that explains why she sabotages other people's relationships.
Nope, she wanted to teach Sarah Beth a lesson about how recklessness hurts a marriage and that she was taking a good stable marriage for granted all because of a stupid crush.
Took me a while to get into this show but I persevered as many friends were vey complimentary. It took until season 3 and then the show just took off for me. when the drama is character based it can take a while for you to get to know the characters. Its a wonderful script and a wonderful cast. Top drawer.
Betty had only just found out about Don cheating on her with Bobbie Barret and basically lashed out and wanted to mess up her friends marriage too. I think Betty was especially angry about the concept of cheating at this time and she wanted to see if her friend would actually go for it, but its true, Betty did not MAKE her do anything. This was just honestly one of the more interesting, somewhat unexplained things that happened in this series
You basically just explained it rather nicely. Bettys husband was a cheat, and it destroyed her. Sarah Beth pining for and fantasizing about a young man while at the same time acknowledging her good, easy to please husband just infuriated Betty, and rightly so.
They are at fault for their own actions. It’s true that they didn’t have to sleep with each other regardless. On the other hand she saw they were vulnerable and arranged a situation that would not have occurred without her interference. It was manipulative and served no great purpose other than her own satisfaction.
you missed the scene where Arthur makes a pass at Betty in the stables and tells her she is "so profoundly sad". Key to the scene where they meet again at the Country Club and he seeks to make amends
Betty wanted to show Sarah Beth that she was basically another Don, and it worked. Sarah Beth had, in her own words, a great husband who was easy to please, but her selfish, childish and indulgent fantasies were all she could think about, and she ultimately put that before her marriage.
Im totally team Betty. That vain, pathetic woman wasnt satisfied with her 'easy to please' (her words) husband, she wanted to be ravaged by some young man who was engaged to someone else, just to validate her womanhood and need to feel desirable. Betty set her up, and she took the bait.
i half wonder too if Betty orchestrated this affair to punish her friend for wanting to wander away from her marriage(even if she was hot on him too (and wanting to punish herself in turn for wanting him)). Betty's all about maintaining the façade of a 1950's housewife, and a lot of that carries this misogynistic standard for loyalty and domesticity. Kind of an interesting cornerstone to reflect in a character if thats the case.
Why does everyone blame Betty? Those two were not forced to do anything. They just fucked. She basically set them up on a date. They should be happy but they irrationally blamed her.
Betty is like a green plant in the house. She has no life goal. Nobody know what she does the whole day and nobody care. Only the day there is an reception, we put her in the spotlight. Otherwise, she doesn’t know what her whole life mean as well. Peggy and Joan decide to be part of the task force and every minute are dedicated to pursue their goal.
Sorry but Betty isn’t in the wrong she is a grown women and knows what cheating is and still did it y’all are the type to walk into a wall and blame the wall for being there and not yourself for walking into a wall
Everyone was wrong in this situation. I do think that Betty Draper facilitated the affair and made room for the opportunity for things to happen with Arthur and Mary Beth, who both seemed like they were going to or willing to cheat on their partners anyways. Arthur liked Betty who liked him back but pushed Mary Beth towards Arthur as a sick game to project her own hate for Don cheating on her. Of course Arthur and Mary Beth then they slept together. I think Mary Beth had one foot out the door of her marriage anyways and it's a shame because her marriage is ruined, Arthur cheated on his Fiancee and is probably not going to see Mary Beth again. Betty got to enjoy and then guilt Mary Beth for doing what she thought Betty wanted to do. It's brilliant but sad because this kind of philandering happens all the time in real life. Plus when Women cheat they're much smarter about it and get away with it far more than Men do.

Not really. It depends on what sort of women you bring into your life. If you're just looking for some tail and chase the superficial bimbos, then you're not going to be hanging around very many women of substance. As for the original poster's comment, Betty's a peculiar character. She's become aware of her husband's lying and cheating so she has a phase where she just doesn't give a crap about anything. She softens a bit more as the series goes on, but she still remains cynical. All around the characters are a mixed bag. Each does some pretty awful stuff, but *most* of them learn from it and grow. But after his father dies he's able to break away from the mold that his family tried to set for him, and he becomes one of the most redeemed characters in the series.
