It never sounds wrong to me. Just as a new, never-before-heard emotion. The whole thing doesn't hit the ground at any time. As soon as it threatens to become recognizable, he throws you off the track again.

I love how Thelonious would play and not be afraid to touch an undesirable note that might clash with others. His philosophy comes through in the visual, one that I apply in my daily life. In real jazz, it doesn't matter that you played the wrong note, as long as you're on your way to play the right one. Life is full of wrong notes. Are you in key? Are you tuned? Are you prepared to play the right note after the wrong one?

It's Monks way of bending a note, it's intentional. No such thing as a wrong note w/ Monk.
I see what you're saying, although those are much more pronounced than ghost or pass through notes. But what seems to be an unintentional "wrong" note to some, def is intentional and a note with purpose when it comes to Monk. Him, Oscar Peterson, and George Duke are three of my favorite pianists, excluding my father, RIP.n@@talkgtr

A friend introduced me to Thelonious Monk, in the early 90's. He died not long after, from cancer at the age of 21. I wasn't a big fan at the time but I sure feel it now.
Yeah, Monk was 64 when he died.
People have always said that Monk had a heavy, uncompromising sound. Yet from what I have gathered over the years, Monk plays with a touch extremely sensitive to the dynamics of the instrument & song, and a monstrous technique to back it up.
