Pikasprey Yellow You know, I actually have Mortal combat 4 for the gbc. I got it for free from an old friend. The moment I got into the first fight, I was like, what the fuck is this shit?
Funny story, a game shop down town Toronto had like 50 boxes of MK4 for GBC. They even displayed it in the shape of a number "4". Every time I visited the shop it made me chuckle since that display of MK4's was there till the store closed. It was there for 5 years and not one copy sold.
You can play MK4 on a regular Game Boy too, that way you don't have to look at those ugly color graphics. If you play it on Super Game Boy, you got more color options than on either the Game Boy Color or Game Boy Player.
MK4 is my favorite MK game, and I can safely say that the GBC port is an insult to the game it's based on. Hate on MK4 all you want, but at least the arcade original and the console ports had effort put into them. The GBC port is one of the most blatant cash grabs of all time.
When I was in elementary school, my buddy Anthony had MKII for the game boy, and we played the heck out of that game for years. The only way we figured out how to beat Shao Khan was to spam the leg sweep with Scorpion. Ahh, the mid-90s. What a time.
Dear Pikasprey Yellow, I just wanted to say that you're the most UNDERRATED TH-camr I've ever seen! You always produce amazing content and I greatly appreciate how much I have learned from your channel. Your analysis is always comedic as I get a Squidward vibe from the way you narrate your topics. I can also feel your passion with the level of emphasis you put into each video. You are by far one of my favorite channels to watch. Watching you always gives me a nostalgic vibe every single time. I wish you and your channel the best in the future! Quality > Quantity With optimism, Qaaman A.K.A Detective Q
wtf man, Mortal Kombat 4 on Gameboy Color was my childhood. I loved the sprites and it's 1 song that looped over and over. Btw, about the fatalities, do you seriously not see the effort that's been put into them? The devs of this game have obviously poured their heart into that game. It's people like you that disgust me and wish that youtubers would stop talking crap about my childhood games and actually discuss terrible games like Breath of the Wild or Super Mario Odyssey. Smh It's sarcasm for the 5 ppl out there who don't get it.
For some reason, I was expecting a Mortal Kombat game on the Game and Watch. I don't know in what universe that is possible, but I'm glad it's not this one.
The private life of Kung Lao? Yes please! What is his favourite food? Where does he live? Who's he dating? These are important questions that need answers!!! 😜
Heh, nowadays people would go nutzoid over just a frame of a video showing a clue that has to be deciphered using actual decoding skills just to reveal kung lao's favorite snack. Just look at how some games only tell the story in small pieces and people make theories about what they don't know for sure.
I actually really like the visual style of the Deadly Alliance port. Has any other game done that kind of reverse 2.5D style, where sprites act on a 3D plane? It honestly looked like a scene from a late 90s Disney flick, where the hand drawn animation acted on a cgi plane
I have to say, i found this channel searching for something about pokemon, and i just can't stop watching all the videos, and seeing one video being uploaded today made a part of my day, so thanks. Also, damn, i didn't know that mortal kombat for gameboy color and i don't know if i feel better knowing that it exists
Miztr That shit was my one of my favorite games as a kid. I even played it on my Super Gameboy, because I was the poor bastard who didn’t get a N64. It had a special border for some odd reason and I loved it.
A few years ago, I found myself amazed that I could carry a device in my pocket that could play GTA Vice City. Now we have reached a point where games like Skyrim have become portable. Amazing how far we've come since the days super stripped down Game Boy ports.
I remember getting MK4 on my GBC. There weren't many games for it at the time, and I wanted to see how colorful these games were going to be. Imagine my disappointment when I learned the fatalities were "greyscale." Hell, they looked like animation made with the GameBoy Camera. I was so relieved when I learned that they also colorized and re-released _Link's Awakening._ That game is great.
you do know that AVGN isnt an actual reviewer and he's funny. you probably dont get his jokes lol. go watch "Hong Kong 97" or "How the nerd stole christmas"
YES back in the day (2002/2003) MK Deadly Alliance on GBA was a big dal. Everybody was playing Super Mario Advanced 2 or Pokemon Ruby, (and getting hyped for the new Remakes of Gen1).. if you werent playing Mario or Pokemon on any gameboy you were a loser/hater... BUT this changed with MKDA and TE... at the time having a 3D fighting game on a handled was big deal... I dont think even Tekken had a truly 3D port on GBA...This MK was a trip at the time... and yes, I remember the palette swaps being "costumes” but we loved them. I particularly remember the classic 80's costume with brighter tones of orange, pink and yellow lol
I grew up with MKI&II on GBC, as a combo pack. I do remember playing II significantly more than I, but once you got used to the input lag the controls weren't nearly as bad as the video implied. Also, playing as Goro involved more than just winning the game. You had to finish the whole game with any fighter, then wait for the credits and the words "The End" to appear. Simultaneously press and hold [Up] + [Left], Select and [A] until the Title screen appears. Release all buttons, and press Start. Then the "Goro lives as you" screen would appear and you'd play as him. He was laughably overpowered and broken, but that was the fun of it. I'm sure that's all just rose tint, but I really liked both games as a kid, even though I was significantly worse than II, objectively speaking.
Honestly, as a kid being able to bring a competent copy of MK2 wherever you went was amazing. I have very fond memories of playing MK2 on GameBoy while my dad brought me to his softball games, I remember once a bunch of other kids at the game crowded me to watch me beat Shao Kahn.
I remember being so excited to find Mortal Kombat 4 at an Ames store as a kid. That excitement quickly faded once I put the game into my Game Boy Color and began playing it.
8:50 It's a reference to the Ninja kid from the Nick India Dab video. Y'know, that one Ninja anime NOBODY knows about. ._. (A very late 2018 Update!: His name is Kenechi, the anime he was from is actually aired on Nick India to this day.)
I don't think it's an obscure reference, I think it's about how authentic Japanese shinobi opt for a midnight blue instead of black, to not stick out in the moon as a black silhouette
I didn’t even realize they ported so many of these from the series onto the portable Nintendo systems. Nice vid and the collector in me is feeling that MK II for the original GB!
You can hear the ABGN inspiration from his voice inflections alone. I honestly think that if you keep at it you can make youtube your job. I love your content. Keep up the good work!
To me, if I have to choose a best Nintendo hand-held Mortal Kombat of the ones you reviewed, I'd go with either Mortal Komnbat II, Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance or Mortal Kombat Tournament Edition. I will say that I like the music tracks from Game Boy Mortal Kombat 1, which is why I rank it higher than Mortal Kombat Advance & especially Mortal Kombat 3. Want a really awesome Nintendo hand-held 2D Mortal Kombat? Ultimate Mortal Kombat for the Nintendo DS is the way to go.
This is my favorite videos on the internet. I'm not even a big MK guy but hearing the waves of disappointment then optimism as you go through the games, concluding with your description of MK4's Game Boy Color version, it's cathartic to watch, I think gaming now has problems but yeah, shovelware used to be a much bigger beast then. Now, it's bootleg ads for bootleg Among Us that's taking the world by storm.
I came across this video while scrolling through my feed and all I can say is... Thank you PikaSprey, I've been looking for a nostalgic reminder of my MK 3 on the Game Boy and didn't even realized it. Now thanks to you, all I can think of right now is regreting never playing MK 2 on the Game Boy 😡
Had the gba port of Deadly Alliance when i was a child, and it was actually insane for the time the amount of content it had on a portable. Great game 🎮 👏
It sucks that TH-cam has no PM system, but I have no trouble making my appreciation of your content public. Keep up the absolutely fantastic work, you're one of the most genuine and dedicated content creators on YT right now IMO.
With MK on GB you have to tap the motions really slow and they will work every time. It's all about the timing. Trying to do this on an emulator may be harder as the controller you are using may not be simulating the GB controls very well.
I dare say Pikasprey towards the end of this video you sounded like the AVGN as just a calmer and more PG-friendly version of him. Just the part that you were sounded genuinely disappointed at the GBC port of MK4 made me realize you sounded like him for that part. Love your content, keep up the great work! :D
Kenneth Eaton I didn't even know there was an MK for the Game.com, and given how bad the GB versions are, the Game.com version must be a whole new level of bad.
Redhotsmasher I owned it... and it was more playable than the first gb game... but good god was it bad less animation... worse hit detection ETC... less everything. Nowhere NEAR GBC MK4 though.
Clueless parents buying these horrible ports finally answered the eternal question of how this crap ever actually sold. Those poor kids must've been scarred for life.
I had the mk2 for original game boy and liked it( i was a kid ) also remember trying to buy one them mk games for gba and dude at the counter talked me out of it...suggested I get tekken for gba which was sweet
This video feels like a calmer, cleaner AVGN episode. The tone of the rants and even some of the choice of phrases are very AVGN. Not totally a bad thing, but noticable
That wasn’t a glitch at 2:09 you did the pit fatality. The spikes are on top of the bridge with only 2 spikes on each edge of the stage. That’s why she didn’t get up.
Its been a long time since watching this video for the first time, and I just realized you had a very avgn vibe in this video and that made me enjoy it even more.
I recently got a multicart from AliExpress, and one of the games on it is MK4........ I played it and I was like why. Of ALL the games you could slap into a bootleg cart that fits multiple games, you pick this one? Could've had battletoads or something but no.
You badmouth the Gameboy versions but when it's the only thing you have to play on a field trip or vacation you'll be glad you have it. OK, except maybe that Gameboy Color one. That would go out the window.
Thank you for this lovely Christmas gift. You even included my top three characters via mentions and gameplay! Oh, and I would love to know about the private life of Kung Lao! I bet he does gardening.
8:49 I think it's a subtle reference to how in anime, specially in the 90's/2000's a lot of anime used dark blues to shade things that were black instead of using greys (take the Dragon Ball Z Bojack Unbound movie for example)
@0:35 is when I left this video to watch defenders of the realm. Thanks for reminding me that was a thing! Thought I imagined it lol I'll leave a like anyway...
i had and played a lot of MK1 and 2 on gameboy back in the day - MK2 was such an improvement, i had no idea it went downhill again from there lol. great video :)
Great review, and thanks for the sour memories, unironically :) 8:50 I think (and I'm reaching very far here), the "Anime" version is derived from the whitewashing scandals in Anime where black characters are recoloured blue (Jynx, Mr. Popo) to look "less offensive". So making Scorpion's garb blue makes sense just in context, not in humour or individuality.
A friend bought me MK2 for the GB when I was in the hospital as a kid. LOVED it. Played the heck out of it. Still have the music stuck in my head. Kid I knew from school who I thought was a friend asked if we could swap cartridges for a weekend since he had 1 and I had 2. I never got that cartridge back. A 'burglar' took it. Still one of my favorite GB games.
This time last year I only had a few hundred subs. Thanks for all the support this year, everyone! Enjoy your holidays^

Tiger had a port, my brother got on for his birthday and it was still better than MK4 for the gameboy lol

Mk4 looks like someone made it in Microsoft paint.
You can play MK4 on a regular Game Boy too, that way you don't have to look at those ugly color graphics. If you play it on Super Game Boy, you got more color options than on either the Game Boy Color or Game Boy Player.

i fuckin love mk4, non gbc. much better than MKDA or MKA or MK VS DC any fuckin year (though behind Mk9)
That Deadly Alliance port was actually pretty ambitious. I respect the attempt.
i had the tournament edition one, it was actually pretty good for a hand held, even more so that they used 3d instead of just 2d.

Nice another mk vid. Also there someone making a gbc port of ultimate mk3. Looks pretty cool and looks a million times better then mk4.
I used to play these all the time back in elementary school when I first discovered emulators.
Rest In Peace Playr

A+ content every time man. Keep up the good work, everybody appreciates it
0:51 that looks like an mk download you see on page 15 of google
Nope, page 2 is already the dark web
8:49 I think it's a subtle reference to how in anime, specially in the 90's/2000's a lot of anime used dark blues to shade things that were black instead of using greys (take the Dragon Ball Z Bojack Unbound movie for example)
Mortal Kombat 4 GBC is the best Mortal Kombat ever
The Cutehog Team lol
The Cutehog Team it sucks.
The Cutehog Team ikr like the graphics are top notch and the gameplay is just *insert kissey noise* love it*😉😉😉
Pam Shealy worst mortal kombat to EVER EXIST. Goddamnit this game fucking sucks.
This game would give Mortal Kombat Advance a run for it's money
@0:35 is when I left this video to watch defenders of the realm. Thanks for reminding me that was a thing! Thought I imagined it lol
I'll leave a like anyway...
This comment was created with the purpose of highlighting audience interaction in the TH-cam algorithm for this video

There is actually a fan-made port of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.

10:39 "Scorpio" XD
5:32 " Z E R O "
Great video pikasprey happy holidays to you
2:01 TOASTY !
This has to be the funniest video I've seen in awhile
Mortal Kombat had a cartoon show for the kids? Oh, that's right. Can you believe they got Luke Perry to voice Sub Zero?
Lmao how do you have anything related to MK for kids
The deadly alliance port looks like something I’ll actually enjoy
Mortal Kombat 4 looks like it could be a cheetah men sequel
It could be an art project for a visual arts course at a junior-high school or elementary school.
cheetahmen 2 is worse then cheetahmen 1
Great review, and thanks for the sour memories, unironically :) 8:50 I think (and I'm reaching very far here), the "Anime" version is derived from the whitewashing scandals in Anime where black characters are recoloured blue (Jynx, Mr. Popo) to look "less offensive". So making Scorpion's garb blue makes sense just in context, not in humour or individuality.

Me: Oh My Its That From Atari?
Edit: btw mk4 was my childhood and this RUINED IT
I just subbed really like your take on these games can't wait to watch more of your videos great job man
im guessing ultimate mk 3 on the ds was good
shadow40k0 not really, but it did make good use of the second screen by showing special moves and fatalities
shadow40k0 Yes, it is.
