      Nick Tenney I’m a referee myself and I have also been a linesman (you learn both in the course). Im 16 and have been refereeing for a year and a half. The running down the line isn’t the hard bit. All you do is follow the last defender. The hardest bit is trying to decide within a couple of seconds if the player is offside or not. And to stick with your decision. And also to try and watch the ball and the attacker at the same time

  • @R4ndomWords
    @R4ndomWords 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1019

    Keep in mind that these are easy conditions for a wide variety of reasons:
    1) There is only one striker and one defender and Garry & Carry know that only those two are relevant. In a real game it can get much more complicated with multiple defenders and attackers fighting for positioning - and good luck keeping track of who was passively offside and then becomes actively involved seconds later.
    2) Garry & Carry have to only look out for offside and are not distracted by other possible decisions that a linesman has to routinely make.
    3) They know the small time window when the pass is coming in.
    4) They know at which height the defenders will approximately cross and thus can adjust their positioning beforehand.
    5) They don't have to run up and down the entire side line all the time.
    6) Their view is completely unobstructed.

      mate this whole thing is just like pro gaming. They do nothing else all day long to become extremely good but there will always be a situation where you get lost and make a mistake. Being a ref is one of the hardest things to do

    • @anniemilia2804
      @anniemilia2804 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Actually this is harder than most of the situations in the real game because normally defenders and strikes are running to a same direction, whereas here the players are running against each other and it’s very hard to say when the defender has passed the striker also considering the ball‘s location/has it already been passed in the exact moment. Also normally defender tries to stay between the striker and the goal and not just pass him. I know this for a fact because I‘m a ref and I’ve tried this myself, still you made very good points:)

      KASPER RDS do you even know refereeing? Refs have to run as fast as the players to keep up with the game. It might seem like a easy job but trust me, to be a good ref you have to be in fit. At the end when the main referee was explaining his theory to them, he's absolutely right. At best, human reaction time will have a minimum of 0.1/0.2 seconds of delay. In that time, the quickest athletes will have traveled close to 1 or 2 meters further forward. So if he looks 1 or 2 meters offside, he's probably onside due to the delay of reaction time and human error.

    its easy for us to say "Oh That Was Off" when we're in front of the tv screen !! Refs r always there to do their best ...i know that sometimes it doesnt happen...but now with VAR, lets just hope these situations r cut to a minimum !! During the Confederations Cup...VAR took way too long !! Sometimes, some decisions can be made by the VAR instead of asking the ref walk all the way to the monitor, watch the incident, n make a decision !! This can easily take 3mins off the clock !!

      Football Center ~ Yes n No ~ i watched a couple of Confederations Cup games...n the whole process was a bit all over the place !! They need to make it more effective ~ The Refs cant be getting an Alert 30sec after the incident ~ then +30s for listening to the alert ~ then 15s to run to the monitor ~ then 30s to watch the incident ~ then make a decision ~ then another 30s goin back to the pitch to correct wtv decision was made !! This amounted to an average of 2-3min per incident ...n it occured at least Twice in the games i watched !! Stoppage times were still 3-5min at then end ...when it shud hv been 8min !?! its not realistic !! Either stop the clock when theres an incident or everything must be done in 1minute max, which would require the VARs to make some decisions themselves !!

    They made it look more difficult, because the defender moves in the opposite direction. However, most of the times, the decision has to be made when the defenders keep hold of their position until the attacker makes a run that they follow afterwards (so, movement in the same direction), or at set pieces, that again, both teams move in the same direction

    That bit about them giving onside if it looks slightly offside is probably because of human reflexes and processing speed. You can only register the ball being kicked, then the player running past with a slight bit of delay. The speed the players are moving at is enough that the distance they appear to move is longer than reality.

    Why can't we have a camera replay similar to the one in this video. The camera can follow the linesman and be used to help with looking at offsides

    Been a professional boxing judge for years now, it’s incredibly difficult. As a longtime futbol fan.... I’ve always said that being a linesman’s got to be one of the hardest, if not the hardest job in sports officiating.

      Samuel Munoz I’m a football referee myself and am a linesman too (you learn both in the course). And I have to be honest. I find being the referee more difficult than the linesman. And I’ve only been doing it for 1 and a half years so I’m not really experienced

    • @sammystate21
      @sammystate21 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jamspell Oh I wouldn’t doubt that. I’m sure they’re both incredibly difficult, a referee especially with having your head on a swivel constantly, positioning and the speed of the game multiplies. Lucky for me, I’m sitting stationary and it’s in a fairly small ring. I just remember after about the 7th/8th round, I’m absolutely mentally exhausted from the speed concentration mixed in with ALL the noise from the crowd. Good on ya, keep up the good work 👍🏽. Lol it’s nice having someone understand what we do.

    6:15 The fastest players sprint flat out at >30kph. So an average defender closing speed with an average attacker accelerating into a run might be 30kph. 30kph is 8.3 meters per second so the attacker will separate from the defender by a meter in 0.12 seconds. Sound travels 344 meters per second, so in 0.12 seconds the sound of the ball being kicked would travel 41.28 meters, or just about the width of a soccer pitch. These are all rough numbers but what I'm wondering is if these referees are using the sound of the ball kick, because by the time that sound arrives on a marginal decision they could look offside by a small amount, and that would explain the phenomenon of that 1 meter compensation (even for experienced referees) the referee describes here.
