  • DIY panelling can make a great addition to any room but getting the detail right is so important with so many factors to consider. I’m going to show you how I created a panelled wall with some off balance furniture and a customers curve ball!
    Sheet material - 18mm thick sheet of 1220 mm X 2440 mm MDF
    Paint - Dulux Overtly olive

    That really looks good and well explained, For us we always struggle to paint MDF, there are some special technic or paint to use or just paint using Dulux paint like you do for wall

      Paint two coats with a white water based trade primer. I like to use a brush where the panelling meets the wall and a foam roller on the main face of the MDF. Then finish with two coats of your a choosen emulsion - good luck, you've got this 👍

      @@RachelLinnMoran I've been trying to study this for hours now with no answer. Yours looks beautiful. Did you use a wood primer on the walls? I'm trying to work out if I need to use a wood primer on the mdf panells and a wall primer on the wall? Please help.

      @@paulaoconnor498 Hi Paul! Thanks for commenting. I used water based white primer on the MDF. The walls had been newly plastered so they had two coats of watered down white emulsion before I applied the panels. I then caulked where the MDF met the wall and then painted the whole lot with a couple of coats of Dulux paint. The finish is still spot on 6 months on - I was in this room a few days ago and the depth of the MDF makes such an impact the overall look if stunning! Best of luck

    Some great tips here as usual, Rachel. We plan to do our hall and master bedroom at some point. Great to see the thought process and pitfalls to avoid.

    When the client decided to eliminate the headboard, did that impact the finish choice for the paint. I guess I’m asking is what would be the appropriate finish for a wall when it is also a headboard?

    • @RachelLinnMoran
      @RachelLinnMoran  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great question! This client wanted an emulsion due to the super Matt look but it will mark are pick up any hair grease over time - the same way a fabric headboard would. For longevity eggshell paint would be a great option 👍

    Hey can we do direct mdf panelling on wall or we require ply panelling first

    • @RachelLinnMoran
      @RachelLinnMoran  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Directly on the plaster works perfectly well 👍

    How wide are the panels/squares? And do you think it could work to put a thin mdf as a base on the wall and then the panels on top?

    • @RachelLinnMoran
      @RachelLinnMoran  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Hanna! Thanks for getting in touch. The spaces between are around 42cm with some slight variations so that it all looks relative to the furniture. The width of each bit of MDF is 9.5cm. I wouldn't layer timber to make panels, as they might not line up perfectly and the finish would be compromised. I'm curious to understand why this might be something you would consider?

      @@RachelLinnMoran Hey and thank you for your response! I have three walls that I'm gonna do this panel for so it is interesting to me to see different walls with different measurements. After recent calculations my panels will be 8cm and spaces around 30 cm, hoping it will look balanced. 😊
      The reason I consider(ed) an MDF base is that we have wallpaper on the wall now and it was put on top of the wall were there used to be panelling before we ripped it out. Unfortunately this left the wall uneven and it felt like an MDF base would be easier than trying to even out the wall with plaster... So thank you for your input! It felt like it wasnt a solution I have seen anyone else use, however every video or other medium I've looked into everyone seems to install panelling on perfect, even and painted walls. We'll see how I get on 😄

    I think marking-out the any furniture that will be against that wall is definitely a great idea. I have seen furniture against panelled walls that look totally 'off' and not balanced, which in turn ruins the aesthetic of the wall and room.

    That middle gap or panel lpoks big compared to the others. Hope its just a camrra angle. Id also say this was a great tutorial rather than mistakes to avoid.

      Hi Paul! Thanks for watching and for your comments. It is bigger which was intentional due to furniture placement and ensuring a visual balance, with the bed being the central feature 👍
