The Fiat Abarth 500 has one strange history. With its incredibly small 4 cylinder turbo, its peculiar exhaust note, and short appearance is not thought to be one of extreme performance any time soon. However this one has a larger turbo on it with every suspension modification you could possibly imagine. With its constant turbo sound and feeling like a literal go kart I had no idea what I was in for driving this thing in the mountains. It's been years since I've driven this car, so has my opinion changed? Let's go for a drive and find out. Thanks for watching and new uploads every Tuesday,Thursday, and Saturday!

Being an Abarth owner this car is extremely fun to drive and I get compliments often from random folk. I've also been on two roadtrips up the Northeast and the car gave me no issues. I agree that the manual definitely begs for a 6th gear, I was overtaking too well in 5th and that should not be. I think these cars are a bargain on the used market, they can be found for under $10k if not just slightly over. Get it, take the back seats out, throw on some mods and you have a nice street legal track car.

The Fiat Abarth is awesome! I bought a used 2013 with a few modded goodies for $7,500. I’ve had it two years now and even driving it this morning, the sounds and power delivery still puts a smile on my face. This car defies all logic. It’s slow, but feels fast, it sits up high and has a narrow wheelbase, but handles great. The turbo (Especially with a chip upgrade and mass air intake) gives it a massive power surge that feels fast. I also have an 02 S2000 that is much faster, but the acceleration feels so much slower than the Fiat. Like I said... defies logic. The 5-speed manual is the way to go. A 6th gear would have been nice, but you get use to it. I think the automatic transmissions are a big contributor to the 500’s bad reputation. I do get a check engine light every few weeks, but it’s always been the aftermarket ECU just needs to be reset. Unplug the negative battery terminal or disconnect the ECU for a few minutes, hook it back up, and it runs like a champ. Do recommend the Torque app and a Bluetooth OBDII reader just to be safe. In two years, I haven’t had to do anything more than basic maintenance. It is fun to drive every time I get in it!

    1. Reliability isn't an issue. They are well built motors. Everything else is the issue, trim, plastic parts...that's what fails.
    2. Yes I know an automatic isn't preferable. I got a deal too good to pass up though. It's not as bad as you think.
    3. It's not fast it's fun. "Smiles per gallon"
    4. I have never loved a car as much as this one. So I don't really care if other people understand it. If anyone has and serious questions you can reply to here or on my IG @pocket.ferrari.

hello from Brazil, here the 1.4 is one of the most tuned engines because it's affordable and makes a good amount of power (big v8 with 400+hp are very rare here). The main car here with this engine is the Fiat Punto T-jet and the Bravo T-jet. the basic tune here (the most people start with) for them is a cat delete and E100 conversion that gets you to around 180whp (+- 210hp) and the next step is bigger turbo, intercooler, better air intake, etc, etc, and with that, they easily get past 240whp(+ -280hp). The good thing about the punto is that the bigger engine bay leaves you with more room for upgrades. And here these 1.4 engines are only sold with manual 6 or 5 gear transmission

You said 5spd and I immediately thought you meant manual. I wasn’t even aware FCA made an automatic for this car. Must sap whatever performance he gained from the upgrade. To each his own in the car game but I think most of us could’ve picked a couple other used cars that would’ve given more bang for your buck

Man, after this review and watching valleycrews videos on the fiat 500.
I want one so bad the only thing stopping me is the cars size.
I feel squeezed in my wrx and g37.
The fiat would probably suffocate me.
But they just sound so gnarly and I'm digging the slower car but one that you can reel out instead of having the power but not getting to use it 90% of the time.

I bought my abarth comp in London drove it 200 miles home to Leeds pulled up at home and my Mrs came out to have a look we ended up going for a little drive, I opened it up on some small back roads in the dark but it’s got bi-xenon excellent lights anyway we just sat laughing whilst screaming along the road, it’s not that it’s fast fast yes it goes ok it’s 180hp and 1050kg but it’s how it makes you feel it makes you smile it’s fun it reminds me of the Honda monkey in bikes....awesome cars, plenty of inside space especially if you remove the rear seats they do a delete kit👍

Has any one experienced the sequential transmission in the 124 Abarth. I know the manual in that car is rock solid as it a previous gen Miata one. But I really like the aspect of the sequential transmission for the 124, increase the power a little to 200, get some coilovers and be done.

      @frankgile1996 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yeah, I think the 4c had a 1.8L turbo motor, while both the 500 Abarth and the Grande Punto/Punto Evo/Punto Abarth had the same 1.4L turbo motor (with the Grande Punto Abarth having always slightly more power than the 500 Abarth - I think they had 135 and 155 hp respectively when they launched, and then they kept increasing the horsepower for both throughout the years)... I think that even the manual versions had only 5 gears, not sure if they ever got a 6spd manual gearbox...

Great review. You did the auto justice. I'm looking forward to the next few years as they disappear from American roads where they are already a rare sight.
    Keeping mine forever.
As the owner of a street strip car as well I will state this truth.
It is much more fun to drive a slow car fast than it is to drive a fast car fast...
It's just a fun car to drive without pretentious visions of grandeur. It is not for the thin skinned or the prudish types.
It's a brash little car that entices the inner juvenile delinquent that resides in some of us constant egging you on.
It handles like no front wheel drive should yet unlike the competition whom frankly build more powerful refined vehicles.
Well the Abarth has something all of those superior competitors lack.
    Character.
It's to bad America was to worried about impressing some stranger at a stop light with big boring Subs and Pick-up trucks.
    How lame...

I think you lost me at "Big turbo upgrade = faster spool" I can't see a larger turbo on a 4 cylinder without supporting mods decreasing spool time? I was curious about the Fiat so thanks for making the video, but someone correct me if i'm wrong here. If anything you would get higher boost but it would come on slower... The stock intercooler might aid in decreased spool time but wont help maintain peak boost, especially without a larger up-pipe as you cycle gears.

Just wanted to give some background information as you missed quite a few points. The fiat you are driving is a SOHC with a multi-air brick. The multi-air brick is an electronically actuated, pneumatically charged (by oil pressure) brick that controls intake cycles. These engines, while great from the factory, can’t really make very much horsepower, especially in the high rpm as the multi-air unit was designed to increase torque and power at low engine speed. Getting 220-250 BHP is about as much as you could make from a multi-air engine, anything after that and you’ll have troubles. The European fiats have a DOHC “turbo-jet” engine with a much higher rev range and ironically more reliability, as it uses a common DOHC setup rather than a proprietary multi-air unit. The Alfa Romeo 4C uses a DOHC setup for European models as well, but even in the states, it doesn’t share the fiat engine. The 4C is a 1.7L BiTurbo, making nearly 100 BHP over the fiat 500’s multiair. Hope I helped someone learn something new.
