  • Michael Corleone’s Biggest Enemy | Michael Corleone VS Hyman Roth PART 2🌹
    IN THIS VIDEO🔥 ...
    We continue unravelling the masterful game Roth and Michael we're playing on each other. We analysed all the events and circumstances that led up to Michael taking on his biggest and most powerful enemy. However, by the end we left you with more questions than answers. So, let’s continue from where we left off.
    In the Godfather II, we are reintroduced to Don Michael Corleone, in the middle of making the biggest deal the criminal underworld had ever seen, propelling the Corleone family to both gain legitimacy but at the same time an enormous amount of power and influence. Michael was partnering with known mob associate, Hyman Roth, renowned for his business acumen and money making skills for the mafia, they were about to make the biggest deal in mafia history. However, as we all know by now, Roth had other intentions behind this deal.
    As you may recall, Michael is now certain that it was Roth who was scheming to destroy the Corleone Family and completely take over. However, Michael is now left with the mystery of why is Roth doing all this? who was the traitor within the family? And how did Roth manage to play such a brilliant deception on him without him realising?
    Roth understood he wasn’t with an average gangster or hoodlum, he understood he was dealing with Don Michael Corleone, son of the notorious Don Vito Corleone, who he had worked alongside and learnt from for years. Roth himself was an extremely intelligent man and possessed an extreme skill of vigilance and foresight, to always be 10 moves ahead of everyone.
    From the very beginning Michael never completely trusted Hyman Roth, however Michaels ambition and even admiration for Roth, blinded him from the fact that he was conspiring against him. After the assassination attempt at his home, there were 2 major suspects.
    It's possible at that he didn’t know for sure, and was playing both Roth and Pentangeli , however as we discussed in part 1, He comes to the conclusion that Frankie had no interest or ambition to take him out, therefore leaving Roth as the main suspect. So, he knew it was Roth by the process of elimination. His suspicions were confirmed after he went to Cuba.
    Unknown to Michael, Roth was scheming to have him killed to avenge the death of Moe Greene, his longtime friend. Roth manipulated Michael's brother Fredo into going behind his back, unwittingly providing vital information, that was used to arrange an attempt on Michael's life, which nearly succeeds. Roth also attempted to murder Pentangeli, while making him think that Michael was to blame, to later have him testify against him.

    The great thing about reading the book before you see the movie, is many of these questions are answered. Also Albert Neri's back story, Why Rocco was promoted etc. I remember having to explain the movie to my date because it was kind of confusing if you dont know the back stories. They tried to fit so much into that first movie. I think Part 2 is the best of the bunch because we have some background on all the players. This was one of those books I started in the afternoon and ended up reading until 4am when my Mother came by and screamed at me that it was a school night. I didnt care, the book was that good.

    Roth is probably one of the most cunning villains in history. He’s a billionaire, but lives in a $10,000 1,000 square foot home in North Miami, probably even paying a mortgage on it. He appears to be fatherly and warm-hearted, but once they’re in Cuba, he appears to be cold and shady one minute, then friendly the next. And when Michael crosses the line asking him about Frankie, he reveals his true self, a ruthless businessman. Then he pretends to be weak and dying so Michael’s bodyguard can attempt an assassination on him and have him killed, then the senate committee hearings having Michael set up. Roth was just as smart and cunning, but at the end, he had it coming to him, Lee Harvey Oswald style!

    One of the the most memorable lines in Godfather 2 occurs when Michael dismisses the argument that Roth is invincible:
    “If anything in this life is certain, if history has taught us anything, it is that you can kill anyone.” Julius Caesar, JFK, etc.

    • @hitleractually8180

    • @irkhanbasc
      @irkhanbasc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That line was a premonition. The events of the movie took place around 1958-1960. Recall near the end of the movie during the press conference with Hyman Roth that Roth returned to the United States so that he could vote in the upcoming presidential election (meaning Kennedy vs Nixon in 1960). That was a crooked election, with the mob having a significant role in getting JFK elected. They thought they owned him. They later felt he betrayed them. We all know what happened to him in Dallas, and the mob played a big role.

    Trivia :
    During Roth's birthday party, the pattern on his shirt changes. Due to weather difficulties, the two minute scene took over a week to shoot and the original shirt was lost at some point. The production designer attempted to recreate it by drawing an approximation of the pattern onto a plain shirt, but it didn't quite match.

    Hyman Roth's Moe Green speech is such a fine acting tour de force by Lee Strasberg who was a founder, major player and tutor at the Actors' Studio in NYC - a truly remarkable performance, so full of depth and subtlety - It's not hard to see why he became such an influential mentor to a whole generation of Hollywood's finest actors and actresses - He should have got the Best Supporting Actor Oscar and though he was nominated, it went to Robert de Nero (one of his students !!) for his performance as the young Vito Corleone - a great performance for sure - but for me Lee Strasberg's was the finest - A truly remarkable man and a great actor, creator and teacher...

    The reason for Roth wanting to kill Michael was in part about avenging the death of Mo Green. However Fredo mentioned Johnnie Ola said Michael was being ‘tough on the negotiations’. It is possible Roth viewed Michael in the way of his business interests and put out the hit on him. It could have been a combination of both, where Michael’s being tough on the negotiations was the last straw and Roth decided it was time for Michael to go. Fredo was the weak link in the chain and if Michael was killed it would lead to Fredo being the next Don. Fredo would be easy to manipulate and Roth could then control the Corleones while expanding his business empire. That might have also why Michael had Fredo killed. Not only because of his betrayal but also Fredo being the perpetual weak link, were other families would want Michael dead so they could put Fredo in their. Michael was in some respects viewed as ‘in the way’ of their plans and so long as he was in charge the Corleones would remain strong. Roth basically wanted to get him out of the way for personal and business reasons.

      @Emperor AlHasan Don't compare Fredo with Sonny, Fredo couldn't lace Sonny's boots. Even Michael respected Sonny, Clemenza and Tessio respected him, inspite of Clemenza being their Godfather! Sonny was a phenomenal war general! His only weakness was his instinctive hot-headed nature and temper, why do you think he was assassinated. Because he was taking on all four families by himself and winning! Sonny would have been a bad Don, but he was a tremendous underboss. Just replace Fredo with Sonny in the scene where Vito is shot, Sonny's mere presence would have guaranteed that the assassins would never make an attempt, Sonny was very feared...

    • @mmcneil777
      @mmcneil777 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @Emperor AlHasan That is true. I think also Barzini had Sonny killed thinking that Fredo would be put in charge, as Don Vito was basically semi-retired. However, Michael had gone through a change of heart about the family business and Don Vito chose Michael instead to take over as Don. Both Barzini and Roth had a similar analysis of getting rid of the current, stronger Don's - both Sonny and then Michael - and put Fredo in there instead. The difference was Barzini never got to Fredo, but Roth did. He had already taken Fredo out for a test drive and realized he would be easy to manipulate. Probably was why Roth went ahead with the assassination plan against Michael.

    • @weldonbishop2755
      @weldonbishop2755 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Agree with you. In fact I believe that Michael being in the way of negotiations was the major reason for taking him out. The whole point of the "This is the business we've chosen" speech is to say, "I could have taken it personally that you killed my best friend, but I didn't." Fredo didn't open the blinds or kill the hitmen. no.1, It was totally out of character for him to have those kinds of balls. Even out of jealousy. No.2, When he received the phone call late at night from Johnny Ola, he clearly indicates that he was blindsided and knew nothing of a hit. It had to be Rocco. As head of security he would have raised no suspicion walking into Michael's bedroom in order to open the drapes. Michael knew this and sent him on a suicide mission.

    • @KtotheG
      @KtotheG 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @Emperor AlHasan That's unfair because Sonny is not Fredo and Vito was never put in a situation where a family member betrayed him... what if Fredo had something to do with Vito being hit in Pt. 1? • @KtotheG
      @KtotheG 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @Emperor AlHasan If Michael was to save Fredo or keep him alive, he would've had to give up the family business and go completely legitimate. No more gangster shit. Killing Fredo was his only choice in order to keep the empire going, as Fredo would've continued to be a threat. Fredo's ambition was more important than his being a Corleone and submitting to his "kid brother." He never respected Micheal, not like he needed to as the don, because he always coveted his position.. His resentment consumed him. Michael only followed the logic. Taking emotion out of it, killing Fredo was a no-brainer.

      Danny Aiello's line, "Michael Corleone says hello", was completely ad-libbed. Francis Ford Coppola loved it and asked him to do it again in the retakes. Aiello later claimed (on Gilbert Gottfried's podcast) that, due to being nervous about working with Coppola, he didn't hear himself when he said the line and, to this day, has no idea why he said it.

    I've read that the line spoken by Pentangelli's would-be assasin was ad-libbed by the actor and the director like it and kept it in the film. In the book, the killer that Michael had sent to kill Appolonia's murderer Fabrizio, who had fled Sicily and was running a pizzeria in Buffalo, told him "Michael Corleone sends his regards" right before killing him. So I suppose that's where the line came from. In any case, that line confused me about what was going on in Godfather II for years.

      Since we know (even before knowing that tidbit about the ad-lib) that Michael didn't, I always 'read' it as Roth and the Rosato Bros. wanting to completely destroy Frank's faith in family, even as they were killing him.

There's always the problem of having left too much fall onto the floor of the cutting room in order to make things mysterious and in order to get a certain pace in the movie. It is called 'rhythm' and is the most difficult thing to do in movies.

Also, we know that Hyman Roth was based on real-life gangster Meyer Lansky but Johnny Ola was based on a partner of Lansky's named Vincent Alo, whose name they spelled backwards in the movie. Johnny Ola was played by a much younger Dominic Chianese who at the time looked a lot like the real Alo and is better known for playing Uncle Junior in The Sopranos.

    What you've overlooking is the money. In addition to the storytellers eventually just telling us this later in the film, it's also widely accepted that Hyman Roth is a stand-in for Meyer Lansky. What everyone needs to know about Meyer Lansky is that he ended going broke in Cuba. Fidel Castro's communist revolution left Lansky/Roth financially ruined.
    I believe Roth did recognize that the communist guerillas were going to be victorious in Cuba eventually. They'd gained too much momentum both militarily, and politically in Cuba by this time. Roth had been involved in Cuba longer than anyone else, and he was too sharp and wise to not recognize his days on the island were numbered. He knew he would be destitute afterwards, so he would've needed a substantial infusion of cash to get him through after the red fist finally comes down on him, and his string of hotels & casinos in Havana.
    This is why he kept pestering Michael about the money so much. He didn't just want to kill Michael to take revenge on Moe Greene- he wasn't actually that sentimental about him. He's still a cruel, selfish gangster at the end of the day, and Moe Greene had been dead for several years at this point. No, Roth probably had read the tea leaves in Havana long before everyone else did, so he needed a fallback position. In other words, he needed Michael's million dollar suitcase first. It was likely the true motivator and lynchpin holding it all together.
    Hyman Roth didn't necessarily 'need' to avenge his old friend Moe Greene. But he absolutely would've needed Michael's money to help stabilize him back home in America. He's going to kill him anyway, right? Thus, it's of paramount importance that he commandeer Michael's money first since he believes he's going to succeed in either killing or imprisoning him.
    Roth needed that money for the day his Cuban house of cards came tumbling down, and he knew that day was swiftly approaching.

      Lest there be a misunderstanding of Cuban history, the overthrow was not a popular uprising. The Cuban Army had far greater resources than Castro, Cienfuegos, etc. The Army simply overestimated Castro's numbers and backed down.
      Castro's bluff was an enormous gamble that worked. It didn't help that government policy did little to motivate the Cuban people to care who was actually in charge. Once Castro was addressing people from the capitol, his authority to do so was implicit; he augmented his power from there.

    Before watching this video thought I'd share my thoughts. Michael suspected both Roth and Frank P as probable suspects as demonstrated by the fact that he visited both of them and they gave him the answer- Roth basically told him his prime motive was related to revenge for the Moe Green hit and telling him Frank P. was "small potatoes" meaning he was not a significant player in the current gambit. "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer" Mike wanted Roth to think at all costs that he didn't suspect him and they were still friends and partners. Roth was brilliant though- when they hit Frank P. in NYC Frank was told it was Mike that ordered the hit- when it was Roth. This resulted in Frank turning on the Corleone family with the Feds which made live very difficult for the Don.

    I've always thought the 'hit' on Frankie was entirely orchestrated by Roth - the cop walking in, everything - so that Frankie would survive and believe Michael bretrayed him. This wouls push Frankie into betraying the Michael at the hearing.
    This worked perfectly until Michael used the brother to stop Frankie at the last minute.
    In the conversation earlier between Michael and Roth Roth, very very unusually got mad and let himself mention Moe Green. This was because when Michael asked him who had Pentangeli killed Roth knew that Michael already knew it was Roth himself so he (Michael) was taking Roth for a fool. Roth would also have known then that Frankie was alive (in accordance with his plan). It would appear - I'm not sure - that at that time Michael thought Frankie was dead.
    Of course Michael's question may have been deliberately provocative to see whether Roth would get angry at the insult to his intelligence and give something away, and he did - his personal hatred of Michael because Michael had Moe killed.

      @@robertmarino3341 But you can read the book the script was based on, which goes into more lenght due to it's format. With movies you also have to takie into account the editing, meaning some scenes (which *might* have cleared things up) had to be deleted. The information who personally opened the drapes is not essential to the story, f.e. a scene where henchman or maid impicates Fredo in ordering doing so after he has already been discovered by Michael as a traitor surves no purpose to push the story forward. Every movie adaptation is (at least) twice abridged version of a book it's based on :P
      It's not a knock on the movie, don't get me wrong - in fact each scene is packed with information, even if it doesn't seem so, and that's why it's one of the all time greats :)

      @@Deadhammer218 I basically agree with you I think the - who left the curtains opened, who were the killers and who killed the killers was left nebulous because this would have added a another whole plot twist to a very long picture. But I still wish they went ahead and provided answers. But there Hyman Roth and the whole attempted assassination scenario was not in the book.

  • @BuckFutterd

    I be honest with you, I believed it was Fredo who opened the curtains in the last video and after hearing that Culture Mafia actually touching on this I'm conflicted but I still believe that Fredo was the one that had the drapes/curtains opened. As some have said it could be Rocco, I'm not buying that. Rocco could have killed and truly disappeared Michael at anytime because of his position in the family. He was head of security, all those fighters and killers and hitmen where his men. It would be easy truly easy for him to have michael killed by a car bomb, have the driver or chauffer drive (which will be his guy) and then stop and then have his men kill him and then dump the body and no one knows what happened to michael or just out and out walk the killers right into his room and be done with it. If those shooters where Rocco's he could have easily had them as hired security that day (michael would never know, hundreds of people on that property) and allow them to do what they needed to do.
    These men snuck into the compound and knew exactly where to go and tried to sneak out but where killed. Now we are going to have to believe that milk toast Freddo was so cold that he opened up the curtains and then was able to take out 2 professional killers who where skilled enough and hired to kill a major crime figure. I would say that he wouldn't be able to do it. But maybe and I do mean maybe he did do it, he became less of a milk toast fuck up and he was able to kill. Remember he was holding this grudge of being stepped over and not considered the leader of the family. I'll post a clip but there is something else that needs to be considered. Freddo also knew that the Senate lawyer that was part of the commission that was after michael was bought and paid for from Ross as you said that Ross had that guy in his pocket.
    So Freddo even knew parts of the fall back plan if Michael didn't get killed. That is alot of trust from Ross who is 10 steps ahead of his opponents to give so much information to the brother of the leader of one of the biggest crime families in the US at the time. I think the only way he would have done this is he knew for a fact that Freddo was okay with the taking out of Michael one way or the other. I wouldn't be surprised if Freddo actually said or was manipulated into saying that he would be okay to have michael killed. I think these are clues that where put out there for people to find and see in plain sight that Freddo was a true bad guy. The didn't want to paint it plain like that for the audience and show him conspiring because it wouldn't show one Michael being conflicted in killing his brother that is trying to kill him and possibly his familly. And two They where going to make a third movie and they needed his issue with killing his "remorseful" brother as one of the major points in the movie.
    Freddo was behind this but it go the way it did and he got scared and that is why he reverted back to old Freddo again and not sure of himself.

      You actually convinced me that Fredo was far more involved with the Lake Tahoe hit than I've thought for years. The key thing, as you note, is how much Fredo knew about Roth's plan, even the backup plan involving the Senate lawyer. No way does a careful criminal mastermind like Roth reveal that kind of information to an unsuspecting patsy pawn. No, Fredo was all the way involved with the plot. He might not have opened the drapes but he understood what was about to go down and gave enough intel to make it happen. I still think Rocco was also involved as well - a possibility Michael must've kept in mind when he sent the guy on a suicide mission to assassinate Roth in broad public, killing two birds with one stone.

      Just before the hit, Mikes looking at a drawing his son gave him. He is not driving, there is a arrow pointing at him.
      1) he is not in control.
      2) the drapes is a unvieling, a revelation.
      3) the assassins failing, and being taken out meant someone was watching over him.
      It is called the "god"father.
      There's a deleted scene with the undertaker(?) dying, begging Michael to protect him in the afterlife. Mike looks confused.

    Once again, the depth of 1 and 2 are amazing. Also I like to point out that every character in these movies is based off of a real person, but also never offended anyone. No other organized crime movie has done this. I would accredit this to Coppola sitting down with Joe Colombo at the height of his power both as a boss and politically (AIDL) and making sure they were to cross no lines. The main thing Joe wanted was them to never use the term “mafia” in the movie

    The Roth “confession” to Michael about Moe Green never made sense to me. It was a major misstep by Roth and seemed to come out of left field, as if the plot necesssitated he get this off his chest so it could move forward.

    • @cptpapa
      @cptpapa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I can see what you mean. I always thought that interaction was Roth’s way of telling Michael that hits can happen, event to people we care about, without one knowing who ordered it. It was also a way for Roth to suggest that maybe the brothers set the hit on their own. Roth was also telling him that it is just business and it doesn’t need to interfere with their current deal in Cuba. However looking back at the movie it is obvious now that Roth was trying to avenge Green.

      Gotta factor in folks getting over emotional which tends to result in ppl slipping up due to suddenly acting irrational instead of rational. Which seriously appears to had been the case with Roth. AKA he was in his feelings.

    • @dondajulah4168
      @dondajulah4168 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have to assume it was intentional and not a slip as the revelation of the major plot line inserted as a ‘slip’ would cheapen the movie.
      You could make the case that Roth knew that the Cuba deal was a no go and there was no longer any value in being coy.
      Revealing himself as the enemy did not have any downside as he would be untouchable in Cuba. He now had Michael on the defensive with two aces up his sleeve (Pantagela and that Michael would ultimately discover that Fredo had betrayed him).
      If the government of Cuba had not been overthrown, Roth would have remained untouchable there. The money and power controlling Cuba was greater than controlling Vegas at that time. The threat of communism, so long as it remained manageable, played into Roth hands as it gave him access to US intelligence and military assets.
      Roth could expand into dealing arms to all of SOuth and Central America if he had not already done so. He had the upper hand on Michael at this point and his revelation was a way of letting Michael know this.

    I’ve always thought it was Roth masterminded the Rosato towards Pentageli. By doing so he used one of Corleones buttons against him which spearheaded his testimonies against the Corleone family. If succeeded it would have severely weakened Michaels position if not downright destroy him which was Roths intentions to begin with. Plus it further emphasizes that they weren’t in the business deal in Cuba as partners.

    • @david9243
      @david9243 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its sort of the same trick he used when he ensnared Fredo. By using these two he tried to destroy the family from within why Michael acted in the most brutal way possible to having them both killed in the end.
