Wow! I never thought of it that way! Very good observation. Whenever I did a meeting, I waited to be asked to take a seat. I bet my bottom dollar Michael had secret people out there to report to him about what was going on. The one thing that Fredo did was that was wrong was that he spent more time being a Sex Machine than being a Businessman. He could have had his own steam and take his duties responsibly. Back home he was nothing but the Family Whipping Boy, Lackey, and his HR Skills were bad because he hired Paulie who backstabbed them.

Pretty much. Michael already knew Fredo's shortcomings. He made Fredo part of his overall strategy, pretty brilliantly. He never let Fredo know what he was thinking, and he had spies all over the place, reporting back everything Fredo and/or Moe Green did or said.
I think Green's bullying physical abuse of Fredo wasn't something Green or Fredo knew that Michael knew about. I think that was a shock revelation that hit a nerve. But the admission Michael expected to extract was extracted. I think Moe didn't realize he was at Michael's mercy and on trial for his life. I'm not sure if Michael would've extended mercy if Moe had shown respect (and a cool-headed appreciation for the situation he was in).
I wish I remembered the chronology better. Just how soon was the christening after the meeting with Moe Green? It says Neri hit Green a month after the meeting with Michael. It also says Neri killed Barzini. The movie shows both killings taking place during the baptism. Are they different? I guess it'll be fun finding out, with another watch or read.

.. well yeah,, I mean,, skimming is what they do in casinos right? I took it to mean,, Moe is saying you're getting your share what are you complaining about? There's times to be a badass and guys to be a badass to,, and Moe wasn't just courting barzini,, he was dancing to the tune of his old friend and business partner Hyman Roth...
Roth isn't mentioned in TG of course so,, we have to assume Moe was getting his balls from barzini.... And Moe Green being a true player in his own right,, was probably disgusted at the behavior and deportment of Fredo, and mistakenly misjudged the entire Corleone family on that.. and CAN YOU BELIEVE the way that Fredo punked for Moe when things got a little tense?
I'm absolutely sure that Sonny the way he was written into the story would have immediately jumped out of his chair and mortally beaten Fredo with his own shoes... Michael of course was cool as a cucumber the whole time, but when he looked at Fredo and then looked back at Moe, it was almost like, I don't even want to think about it...
If I were to have been the director, I would have put in an insert of Tom Hagen's face when he saw Fredo do that, going from urgent concern to absolutely horrified... Tom glancing over at Michael as if he's looking at a five stick dynamite car bomb half a second from going off...
And if I can be forgiven another personal observation, Frank Sinatra AKA Johnny Fontaine, looking like he was about to throw up on his shoes and like he wished he was anywhere else....... Yeah right, Frankie did it his way, he should have sang it "I did it SAM GIANCANA'S way" lol......
THAT'S when Mike just concluded the deal, I know you've seen it too but it was just weird how it went from, the chef cooked special and there's chips for you downstairs,, to Moe threatening the entire Corleone family... And Mike just sitting there the whole time,, already planning Moe's demise and trying to control himself for his word to his brother...... Personally I don't know how he did it,, cold as space... I suppose seeing mortar rounds and machine gun fire killing your men on a Pacific Beach might have something to do with it......

Excellent video, but you left something HUGE out. Right before Moe Greene walks in, Michael pigeonholed Johnny Fontaine and asks him to sign a contract with the Corleone family's casino operations. Michael CLEARLY was not going ro leave Vegas without gaining control. Johnny's reaction is pretty telling as well. He just looks over towards Moe, signs and books out of there. He had been around the Corleone family long enough to know that something was going to down and the farther he was away from it, the better!

For me the scene in the kitchen where Michael says that he will kill Solluzzo and the cop McCluskey, is where the transition starts. At that point he goes from being the little brother not involved in the family to convincing all the others that he is prepared to kill those in his way. And he does say at that point that it is not personal, just business. He also convinces the others that by using the media to expose a corrupt cop, perhaps the pressure against the family will be lessened and their power solidified. Even though he was far from running the family for a while yet, I always consider that scene as one of the major turning points.

    • @nicolasmartinez795

It’s unfortunate the movie left this quote out from the book during that scene “Tom, don't let anybody kid you. It's all personal, every bit of business. Every piece of shit every man has to eat every day of his life is personal. They call it business. OK. But it's personal as hell. You know where I learned that from? The Don. My old man. The Godfather. If a bolt of lightning hit a friend of his the old man would take it personal. He took my going into the Marines personal. That's what makes him great. The Great Don. He takes everything personal Like God. He knows every feather that falls from the tail of a sparrow or however the hell it goes? Right? And you know something? Accidents don't happen to people who take accidents as a personal insult.”

Another key with the transition of power from Don Vito to Michael is the appeal Fredo makes to Tom about trying to work things out by talking to the Don when Moe is about to storm out. Bad move by Fredo, but Hagen makes it clear in front of everyone that Michael is now in charge.

Sub text aside (although this gives an insight into Fredo) my favorite detail is the little skip and dance John Cazale does as Michael enters the room and the band play, 'for he's a jolly good fellow'. It's brillinat acting my Cazale. The hesitancy shows he's aware that Michael will not be pleased before Michael even sits down. This points to the little meet and greet being Moe's idea in the first place.

It is an iconic and powerful scene, as much of the Godfather is. Yet it is the first time Michael is truly flexing his influence and Moe Greene doesn't seem to realise how bad it is for him. I don't know how real it is, Michael would know that Fredo was being pushed around and that Greene was under the impression that the Corleones were in rapid decline: from a movie perspective, it is brilliant because it raises the film's tension up a notch. Michael seemingly outflanked is speaking from a position of strength, Fredo is put in his place, and Moe Greene is exposed by the Godfather in waiting.

And it showed the family was in the precarious position. Michael (and Vito) was playing the long game and baiting their enemies. They had slowly rebuilt their power base, but they were still walking a tightrope. So Michael's moves were dangerous but they had the possibility of eliminating their enemies and bringing the family to new heights.

Moe was ambitious. It was the Corleones who gave him the funds to start a business. Therefore, the Corleones own the business.

But it’s Greene who knows the casino business and the territory of Las Vegas, which was brand new. He thought that this would protect him from his old pals back East. It didn’t…

@@Riri-oj1zs As I said elsewhere, the real tragedy was that Fredo really could have made something of himself out in Nevada. In Vegas, he was out from under the shadow of his father and older brother learning a new aspect of the business. If he had kept his nose clean and really studied Moe’s approach (while remaining loyal to the family, of course), he could have had something “on his own” like he always wanted. As it was, Fredo completely misused this opportunity, which eventually doomed him.

It was Moe who tries to belittle Michael first, telling him about the food and the dancers as if Michael was still a kid that he could persuade with those kind of things, when Michael was there for business. Also, Moe tells Michael “and your credit is good” as if Michael needed his approval. You can tell Michael didn’t like it and gives it right back to Moe with “My credit good enough to buy you out?” Brilliant!

I love the Godfather movies but I read something recently that made me hate it's director Francis Ford Coppola. In the 80's one of Coppola's director friends Victor Salvo was convicted of raping a 13 year old boy. The boys name is Nathan Winters and was a child actor in one of his movies. When Salvo was arrested they found video produced by Salvo with disgusting crimes being committed. Francis Ford Coppola hired his friend the best attourney money can buy and Salvo only served around a year in prison. Coppola then pulled strings to let Salvo back into Hollywood and Salvo directed the hit movie Jeepers Creepers. When asked about their relationship Coppolla said "They were both young and not that far different in age". The boy was 13 and Salvo 30.

You can learn a lot about people by probing what makes them angry. Anger almost always reveals a weakness and/or vulnerability.

A totally kick ass video CM! I have so much fun watching these and seeing how you breakdown the power dynamics of TGF by way of the 48 laws, Sun Tzu and Nicolo Machiavelli..as well as others. The key here is Michael always stayed cool and let his opponents get emotional, when one gets emotional they'll make rash moves and telegraph what they're going to do, and give up what they're actually thinking. "A wise general keeps his opponents in ignorance of his plans"--Sun Tzu. Always a great pleasure coming here, that's for sure...more videos CM!

No Sonny wasn't. Tom had to talk him down from going immediately to war after the Don was shot. He listened to reason - for a while. Also, after the second time Connie was beaten by her husband Sonny should have reasoned it was a setup. Shrewd genius - Sonny? Hah. The brains of the outfit besides the Don was Tom.

Great video! Beautifully done. I love the explanation of the subtle details into lessons.
But I must say, I did get all the strategic nuances before the video. A consistent theme throughout is that anyone who breaks and loses their cool doesn’t make it. Sonny, Wolts, Roth, Moe, Carlo…etc. “Never let anyone outside the Family know what you’re thinking!”

It gives me more respect for the intelligence of the Michael character, especially for his fitness for his assumption of that godfather position. Thanks.
