Did Frank Pentangeli betray Michael Corleone? & Why Did He Change His Mind?

  • In the Godfather 2, Michael Corleone was put in an impossible situation, where his former Capo regime and close associate Frank Pentangeli, was going to appear before the senate and be a witness against the family. However, just before Frankie was to testify, Michael appears with someone clearly related to Frank. And so, Frank was shocked and then changes his entire testimony in order to not convict Michael. But the question we all want to know, is why? Why did frank suddenly change his mind? And how was Michael able to miraculously survive this seemingly impossible to escape trap?
    After all, Frank truly thought Michael betrayed him, and if he didn’t cooperate, he would be the one facing prison time and even worse. So why did he basically save Michael and thereby the entire Corleone family? And what exactly did Michael do to achieve this?
    At this time, Michael was trying to convince the public that he was just a honest businessman and investor, and was working on removing any and all accusations that surrounded the Corleone family. This was so he would succeed in his mission to make the Corleone family actually legitimate. However, following a clever plot orchestrated by Hyman Roth, Michael is now at risk of losing everything, as Hyman was able to make Pentangeli appear before the senate, and testify against Michael, in which would mean the end of the Corleone family.
    We will reveal in this video, exactly Why and How Michael was able to force Frank into changing his testimony, as well as exactly who that man was, and give you the most important context behind all this. You will also truly comprehend the entire backstory and context that will completely enhance your entire perception of these characters and the film as a whole.....

Even though frank didn't testify seemed he was still in protective custody but by going back on his deal I'm guessing the feds were just gonna turn him over to prison. So i think suicide was Frank's only way out prison & his whole family loses buisness & money or kill himself & his family gets taken care of. Micheal prob would have still gotten to him in custody or prison anyway. I'm still shocked Henry Hill never got killed when he stupidly kept getting sent back to prison several times for drug busts. Their was a huge contract on his head w/ a big reward for anyone who wacked him. I think everybody died by the time anyway & nobody cared 20 years later. In the books, frank had a second family in Sicily who were looked after by his brother. It was hinted that if frank went through with the testimony, Vincenzo would execute his brothers family. I read the books a while back bit that was what I remembered happening
    Edit: I think it was actually in a manuscript for the film that I read about pentangeli's second family in Sicily.

      If you did, it wasn't in Mario Puzo's original novel, The Godfather. It may have been in one of those unofficial spinoff/sequel stories other writers took up, but that tale is not in The Godfather novel itself because Frank Pentangeli was a new character invented by screenwriters for the sequel film based on the recent failed hit that was in the headlines where Carmine Persico tried to strangle Larry Gallo in a neighborhood bar, but was interrupted when a street cop unexpectedly walked in. Hell, they even gave the would-be-killer the same first name; Carmine.

      It had nothing to do with Michael, per se, it’s like telling Vito you’re joining the marines. They’re not jailing Michael or drafting him; but Vito’s sickened by loyalty to a WASP government. Replace Vito with Frankie’s brother, Frankie would’ve repulsed his brother and his Sicilian values.

    • @Tiabliaj1989

      This, I feel it was very glossed over despite the same remarks repeating two or three times. Frank knew his life wasn't worth a nickle after realizing he would be forced to testify when Michael refused to take the fifth. He had hoped he wouldn't be called forward and could just disappear into witness protection, a dead end for the Feds. When he walked into that courtroom and saw his brother was there I think that a) he realized that Michael had not set him up and b) Vincenzo couldn't believe that Michael had told him the truth.
      After all, the Italian-Americans and the Sicilians didn't always see eyeball-to-eyeball. Imagine getting a call from the USA saying your brother is a rat, he's about to testify before the Warren Committee, and that if he gets back to Sicily he should be taken care of (though I doubt the Feds would send him to Sicily for his witpro). Wouldn't you want to see it, with your own eyes? Sure, Michael might have had the ulterior motive of intimidating Frankie by bringing his brother, but whose to say the brother didn't want to be sure?

    • @flibber123
      @flibber123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@eldenlean5221 If neither of them is naive then Frankie knew from the start that Michael would take revenge against his family on account of Frankie testifying. I think the obvious point is that Frankie would not dishonor himself and his family in front of his brother.

    The actual explanation of what Michael did is far more ingenious because Michael would have never had to participate in the demise of Frank because, as hinted at in the later scene between Michael and Kay, he tells her: "It was between the brothers, Kay."
    The actual reason can be found in "The Godfather Part II" screenplay (in dialogue that didn't make it into the Michael/Kay hotel room scene)...
    MICHAEL: "Years ago Frankie had a young girlfriend; he called her his co-wife. That was his joke, but he meant it. He wouldn't divorce his wife... because she was a great cook. He said his girlfriend made a spaghetti sauce once and it was so terrible he knew he could never marry her. He set her up in a house in Jersey. She had to be faithful... and she had to have kids. And she did, two, a boy and a girl. He had her checked out and watched so she couldn't cheat... but the girl couldn't stand that kind of life. She begged him to let her go. He did. He gave her money and made her give up the kids. Then Frankie took them [the kids] to Italy, and had them brought up by his brother Vincenzo. Where he knew they'd be safe. When he saw his brother in the hearing room, he knew what was at stake. I don't think Vincenzo would have done it. He loves the kids, too. Omerta, Kay. Honor, silence. It had nothing to do with me. It was between those brothers."
    So Frankie was actually concerned for the safety of his two children in Sicily if he broke omerta. And it would have been his brother that harmed them, not Michael.
    Of course, how we would ever have known that without the screenplay I have no idea. But that's the reason.

    Frank only testified against his family solely because he thought he was double crossed. In other words, he didn’t do it to save his neck but a payback for what he thought Michael had done to him. Simply put, he was seriously pissed off. Therefore, all Michael ever has to do was to deliver the message that it was not him who ordered the hit and in the process of convincing Frank of that. Since sending a message to Frank surrounded by FBI agents was impossible, flying his older brother, who Frank respected the most, all the way down to New York most certainly calmed him down a lot.

    Great video! Love every second of it. I have a question that these videos bring to mind. Did Michael Corleone have a contempt for the old ways of his father's empire? Did Michael see it as something so old and outdated that he wanted to do away with it and start anew? Could this be one of the few reasons why Michael did not meet with Pentangeli in the beginning, if not secretly to get family business out of the way? I think when his first wife died, Apollonia Vitelli-Corleone, it twisted something in him. He was happy with her and probably saw a future with her. I wonder if that event, losing her, turned him to be more cold and dispassionate for Godfather Part II. It would be an interesting look into his emotional state when she died.

    Your analysis is spot on, but I always thought bringing his brother in the courtroom was also a threat that he would kill the Pentagelli family in NY and Sicily, if Frankie testified against Mike

    • @malinibai1133

      He didn't have to. Frankie's brother Vincenzo would have killed Frankie himself for being such a traitor as to break the law of Omerta in public like that. It was Vincenzo, not Michael, who kept Frankie silent.

    I never thought that Miachael was trying make Frank think his brother was in danger. As Michael says to Kay later, it was between the brothers and he had nothing to do with it. Frank could not testify with his brother sitting there. It was as simple as that.

    Frank honored his brother and by Vincenzo showing up, Frank understood that by testifying to the government in order to save his own hide(he was obviously going to prison for life) he is not only dishonoring his entire family, he showing himself to be a coward. Michael is smart. He knew the hit attempt on him wasn't Frank even though the shooters were from NY. Frank is too loyal while not being smart enough to try to pull that off. Frank, unfortunately wasn't smart enough to see the same about Michael which in the end cost him. Had Michael knew Frank was alive and was under pressure from the senate he could have used his influence over Geary to help him. Frank killing himself ultimately restored his honor.

    When I first started watching this movie I didn't know much about Frank's brother. I used to think the reason Michael brought him to the hearing was to let Frank know that if he talked then Michael would kill his brother. I thought Michael was just that hardcore even though he didn't do that but he still is hardcore.

    Great absolutely great video.... Especially when the two brothers watch each other and the look of the older one change everything leaving Frank with one and only option..... Very nice scene and include the whole meaning of omerta.... Which is that you never speak no matter what and how important is to never forget it... It's all the embarrassed look in Frank eyes seeing in front of his old school mafioso brother.... Analysis of course is once again great covering every possible could happened... From a simple move to the best strategy for winning and keep it up gaining more power which is the whole meaning....

    As most true fans know, the line “Michael Corleone says hello” wasn’t supposed to be in the movie. Without it, there would have been a lot more confusion. Why wouldn’t Michael make a move to clarify the situation instead of letting things get to the point that it did?

    • @fernandducci9459
      @fernandducci9459 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There's was no time to fix the situation as the cops busted in right at that moment when frank was being strangled. He went straight to protective custody from there.
