In the DVD commentary, the Director said other people were confused about how nobody knew it was David Bowie. He said that at the time everyone only knew him as Ziggy Stardust, or at least he did. So when he found out who sang it, it blew his mind that it was the same guy.
Just to clarify something I don't think Charlie was lying when he said that his aunt had been taken advantage of when she was young. If I'm remembering correctly from the book, that did absolutely happen to his aunt but it unfortunately was a situation where someone is abused goes on to abuse another person later on in their life... That doesn't happen to every victim of abuse obviously but it's what happened in Charlie's situation and there has been subtle hints that Charlie's story is kind of autobiographical. I'm sure there are some details changed and obviously name changes but yeah there's some hints throughout the years that the book is kind of autobiographical and the author was sort of writing about his own experiences. In the 10-year anniversary edition of the book there's like a little update letter from Charlie saying that things are a lot better now... From what I remember, I don't think he's in contact with the half-siblings anymore but he's in a good place and is happy. I think you can find that additional letter if you look for it online fans of the book have posted it... It's been a couple of years since I read it but I remember enjoying reading it... And was very grateful that people had posted it online so that I didn't have to buy another edition of the book. Lmao.
Sadly, I've heard too many real-life stories where that has happened. Used people use people sometimes to "regain their power." They didn't have it in that instance so they try to assert it somewhere else or on someone else. It's truly sad. When I was watching a show called "Too Young To Kill," when I was younger (my mom watched a lot of crime shows) a lot of the kids on there were hurt by adults and other people. It's heartbreaking.
When I was a teen. Our local librarian ran a banned book club. we read Perks of Being a Wallflower and it spawned a lot of really important and emotional conversations and a lot of the kids in the group. At one point things got so emotional I had to step out. It helped me figure out that some of the things in my past were not okay and that they needed to be discussed. Anyway sorry for the ramble I just wanted to share.
"I'm still crying" is kinda the Perks of Being a Wallflower experience. I love this book and movie so much. They make me cry every time but they meant everything to me in high school and still mean so much to me now. It's such an important story and I'm so glad you got to watch it. I didn't even see most of it in your clips and I'm crying at work 😂
David Bowie was well known during this time but I myself don’t ever remember hearing Heroes. We had to rely on radio stations or MTV. MTV didn’t really play classic rock much by then. And radio tended to stick to the same set of 70s classics. So some people probably knew and loved “Heroes” in the 90s, it’s entirely possible that these kids didn’t. And when you heard a song on the radio, you had to hope they announced the artist and song otherwise you had to wait until you got home to call up the radio station and ask. (We didn’t have the internet to look it up).
You definitely need to see Rocky Horror in a theater. I'm from Pittsburgh and saw it as a teen in the same theater where they filmed the scenes for the movie. I graduated in 1990, but a lot of this film makes me very nostalgic.
THE TEACHER DANCING EDIT I CACKLED PLS LMAOOOO Also, as an autistic person, I love Charlie so much. To me, and to others as well he feels very autistic coded, especially with the truth or dare scene not understanding the social cues of why that wouldn't be a good thing to do. He took it literally and didn't think about the repercussions, also his whole relationship with Mary Elizabeth in general, his awkwardness idk he's just so relatable. Of course the way he acts is also because of trauma but he really feels autistic to me and I love how he's written. This movie makes me cry so much. I fucking love how his sister reacts to the phone call, she immediately knows something is wrong and asks her friend to send the police to the house. Like you said, they didn't seem that close so that was really nice.
This is one my favorite comfort movies to watch! I watched this movie so many times last year right before bed 😂 Logan Lerma was insanely good in this.
Oh I 100% do believe aunt Helen also had something similar happen to her, nost just that Charlie said it and actually meant himself. But instead of dealing with it properly aunt Helen did something horrible and unforgivable by doing the same thing to Charlie she had done to herself.
Rocky Horror should only be watched with a reenactment for sure. Its the best experience. Logan recently had a small part in a movie called Bullet Train which you should definitely react to at some point. This is one of the best book to film adaptations I've seen. It's just so relatable, as most coming of age films are. All the acting was amazing except Emma's accent needed more work. But I'm nitpicking. Hope you like the book, there's some plot points that were kept out of the movie.
So happy you reacted to this! It has been my favorite film since it came out. The book is heavy. This is one of the few instances where I prefer the book to the film. Casting for the film was perfect!
It's based on a boo and the film did amazing. Everything Charlie went through when he was young thouhh my uncle molested me the and i felt al alone till i met my friends and life shanged everything for me. Im in a great headspace. Irecomendend this nook to EVERYONE. IT WILL CJANHE YOUR LIFE FPREVER

Exactly! Look at Drake Bell. He went on to become a sexual predator after being preyed upon at Nickelodeon.

this movie is one of the best book to movie adaptations purely bc the author had everything to do with it. that should be the norm
The book is SO good, and so is the movie, I have cried so many times reading and watching Perks of being a wallflower and is so glad you liked it!

In the book it explains what happened to her, you’re correct
